hi and welcome to this week's episode of the language lady I'm your host dr. hem Phil and today's topic is going to be word banks and word banks is a great simple tool and resource you can use in your classroom for Els who are at the language proficiency one or two levels because it's not expecting that they already have complete sentence structure especially at the academic context quite yet so what it does is that it provides them the vocabulary provides them the scaffold and they have to choose amongst vocabulary words already that were pre taught that was background knowledge given to them in a lesson direct via different modalities and it allows you as the teacher to be able to assess if they understood the content and what needs to be retaught if if that does apply so let's look at the various different ways that we can utilize this in the classroom the word banks are great resources for Els because it lessens the anxiety for them because they are exposed to this type of vocabulary that there need to be used within context so here's an example of a word Bank that is used for poetry and here we have examples of where Els can pull different vocabulary specific to different seasons and use them for their poem as a great oral activity and a way to assess knowledge you can have students come up with a list of words that that they think of when they think of a specific topic in this one the students thought of vocabulary that they be associated with Halloween and the whole class was able then to utilize that word back here's another great word bang surrounding around penguins and you can use these for your higher-level ELLs if they have more sentence structure in their repertoire and then from that word Bank they can create a story they can use right sentences but there's also another strategy using sentence frames that I'll get into another video where you can expose Els who are not able to create their own sentences without help and they're able to create very creative focuses on their own the enchanted learning website has dozens and dozens of topics for word bank so if you're looking for a word bank that has already been created and don't want to reinvent the wheel this is a great resource for you to use as well one of the critical parts of vocabulary is assessing what students know and how much they need to get in order to reach their goals so this is a great tracking tool to look at how much vocabulary your students have gained where banks are wonderful tools that can be used in every subject area this is an example of a math word Bank it allows students to remember specific vocabulary when they're answering open-ended questions when they're in dialogue with their friends it also allows them to be able to speak more academically and intellectually when they're discussing certain terms then here is a commonly way in which word banks are used in classrooms where you have sentences and students have to choose amongst a list of words that best completes the sentence this is great for a level two for a level one student you may want to add pictures to the the words so that they are able to gain the meaning of the word with by looking at the picture I hope that you were able to gain some value out of the different resources and ways that you can know and assess what your Els know in terms of concepts that you have taught in class or as a review or a study guide for tests if you have other ways that you glean what your Els are learning through other you know informative and formative assessments please feel free to share those below as we're a community of learners learning more how to help our LLS to be successful thanks so much for tuning in I appreciate your support don't forget to hit the like and subscribe button and I'll see you next week
