Add letter initials
[Music] welcome to honeybee and orchids handmade gifts channel today I'm going to show you how to personalize your crochet or knit pieces by adding names numbers and Mitchell's or dates when you personalize your crochet or knit projects you add more value to your pieces and they become a little bit more desirable to your customer base you can sell your pieces for a little bit more or you can add more sentimental value for your friends and family it becomes a custom one-of-a-kind piece so let's get started we are going to use a 3.5 millimeter crochet hook and we're gonna use a worsted weight for yarn there is no right or wrong way to do this this is just a way that I do it so whatever way that you want to do it if it works for you go for it so for this project I'm just gonna show you how I do a single letter and it will be the same if you're gonna do a full name so we're going to do our slipknot for this example I'm going to chain 25 whoops okay so we've reached 25 if I was doing a full name I would start by Cheney and 100 and then I'll show you why in just a second so we're gonna kind of pull this loop through and leave it attached to the yarn we're not going to cut it or fasten it off yet the reason I do that is because depending on the size of name or the size of the letters that you're going to be doing you don't know an exact number of chains that you will need for the letter so this way you can adjust so I'm gonna use the rose in my blanket as a guide two four six eight ten I'm gonna use ten and I'm gonna lay my letter down just to see if I need more chains or not and I'm doing this on you know on purpose so that you can see how to do it so I've got my a but I really want to do the loop and add the stick in the middle so what I can do now is I can add about maybe mm I don't know 15 20 more chains we'll see I'm just gonna go until it looks about right all right I think that I think I added about 20 more so still leave it attached now I'm gonna lay my letter down again yes this is just a rough idea it's not gonna be perfect all right so it looks like I haven't enough chains so the same concept applies if you're doing a name I chain about a hundred then I've kind of roughly lay out my name across if I get to whatever letter I get to if I need more chance I add it if not I just leave it if I if I have more than enough great you can just still leave it I'll show you what to do at the end all right so at this point I'm gonna take a separate piece of yarn on it on a needle and I'm going to begin to sew and I didn't get my beginning chains very tight but that's okay this worked for a customer you would definitely I'd go back and fix it so I'm gonna pull this through and leave a tail all right so I like to freehand my letters in my names and I don't have a particular style I just kind of go with the flow and creatively come up with my designs but if you are a very particular person you can in this example I've got up here you can pen down your letters and that way they it holds in place and you can kind of make your adjustments if I want to add like a swoop up here I can curve it you know I can add more shapes if I want to add fancy little line that goes all the way across and I put the rest of the name above this line then I can do that so there's all kinds of things you can do it's a lot of fun just have fun with it so I'm gonna continue to sew this name just let her in am I going to keep my stitches kind of close together this is very similar to doing a so in an applique on not much difference so I'm going to keep going back in close to catch the fibers at the top of the blanket and come through the letter all right and you can do your a like you can do a more of a curve at the top you can do a more pointy however you want to do it I'm not gonna show you all the way through this litter kind of how you don't how to do a little bit smaller letter so that you don't have to wait so long all right so now you're gonna curve I want to do my curve in my letter and the cool thing about this is that if you don't like a shape that you get you can just kind of pull it out and redo it again if I was doing hot glue and I made a mistake with it that would be a whole different situation when glue is just so permanent and not all of us super perfectionist but that doesn't make sense I'm in if you're trying to make it perfect and you get the glue on there and you mess it up then kind of got a start I don't know what you do in that situation all right so now I'm at the end of my a and in this scenario we have more than enough chains so what we can do is pull out some chains we can pull our yarn through fasten off put us one last kind of stitch right here at the end and then you can tie off your ends put a small little knot to secure everything and then take your needle and you can put your you know put your threads through and then weave in your ends so and you can if you need to go back and fix a little spot you can add your little piece of yarn and sew it back in or you can add a little dot of glue at this point if you want to because you've got everything where you want it to be so like I said there's no right or wrong way to do it this is just the way that I do it and a lot of people ask me about it so now you know my tricks I hope you enjoyed this video and if you did feel free to like share and subscribe I'm also on Facebook Instagram and Twitter so in the next tutorial I'm going to show you how to make this girl's puffy hip band and I hope that you enjoy it join me our hair band it's a great batter school project and my daughter's love these so I hope to see you have a great day bye [Music]
