hi I'm Jake Newman documentation manager at liquor the prior video in this series showed how to generate and join additional views to an explorer this video will show the process of using the luca mel editor to add additional fields to of you including dimensions measures and dimension groups along the way we'll show the relevant documentation links to learn more about each topic in this video first we'll navigate to our project in this video we'll focus on the process rather than the luca mel parameters let's see how the luca mel ide editor helps you create new fields let's say we start typing in a kind of field called a dimension most fields are dimension fields which correspond to a column in our underlying database table or are a computed value based on other dimensions as we type the editor makes suggestions that guide us and if we make an error and spell something wrong the editor marks the line if we hover over the red circled X the editor gives more information about the error on the right side the quick help also shows information about the error in situations like this one the quick help also lists the possible values if we don't know what to do we'll go to the quick help we can click the parameter name and jump directly into its documentation let's copy and paste this example for more information about what the editor can do for you such as folding sections of code check out the documentation next let's finish our dimension fields we want our retail price tier dimension to list ranges of retail prices for example all prices up to $10.00 are grouped together then ten dollars and one cent through twenty dollars grouped together and so forth we'll finish typing the parameter definition telling it to tier the value in the retail price field then save and validate the change now let's navigate to our Explorer in death mode we see our new dimension in the field picker we'll test by selecting retail price and the retail priced here making sure each prices in the right here now we'll use just the tier dimension and Add Account and run it to see our data group by our new dimension looks good we have a new dimension field working in dev mode we'll add a measure next measure fields are used to aggregate values for multiple rows such as a count some max and so forth we'll add a measure field that computes the sum based on the retail price field value there are other options you can use but that's all it takes to make a measure we'll save and validate the change then we'll refresh the explore to see our new measure in the field picker let's choose the field to see it in action giving us a sum of all the retail prices so we've made a dimension and a measure let's look at one more type of field dimension groups dimension groups are a date or time columns best friend using a dimension group we can create multiple fields for a single underlying date or time column in the database for example looking at this sold dimension field users can choose to look at the data by the sold dates exact time or generalize to the date week month and so forth we do this by specifying time frames within the dimension group we already have a bunch of time frames but we can't view the data by day of week let's add the day of week time frame we'll save and validate refresh our Explorer and try it querying the date by day of week our new time frame is working in our dimension group now we have a new dimension a new measure plus a new time frame for a dimension group there are also two advanced field types filter fields and parameter fields check out our documentation to learn more about those other field types for now let's get these changes into production for our business users the following steps were covered in detail in a previous video we'll commit our new fields and time frame and add a commit message about the changes and then click commit we'll click this button to deploy the changes this will deploy to production our most recent commit and any prior undeployed commits the changes are deployed will turn off dev mode now we can see that our changes are all available in production this includes the three views we generated and joined in a previous video plus the new dimension measure and day of week timeframe we quickly added in this video business users can now use our new views and fields in ad-hoc queries or in their looks and dashboards
