FAQs

What are the three stages of annealing?
The three stages of the annealing process that proceed as the temperature of the material is increased are: recovery, recrystallization, and grain growth. -
What is the purpose of annealing process?
Annealing. In general, the main purpose of annealing heat treatment is to soften the steel, regenerate overheated steel structures or just remove internal tensions. It basically consists of heating to austenitizing temperature (800ºC and 950ºC depending on the type of steel), followed by slow cooling. -
What are the three stages of heat treatment?
There are five basic heat treating processes: hardening, case hardening, annealing, normalizing, and tempering. Although each of these processes bring about different results in metal, all of them involve three basic steps: heating, soaking, and cooling. Heating is the first step in a heat-treating process. -
What is hardening heat treatment?
Hardening. Hardening involves heating of steel, keeping it at an appropriate temperature until all pearlite is transformed into austenite, and then quenching it rapidly in water or oil. The temperature at which austentizing rapidly takes place depends upon the carbon content in the steel used. -
What are the different types of hardening process?
Each metal hardening process includes three main steps: heating, soaking and cooling the metal. Some common types of hardening include strain hardening, solid solution (hardening) strengthening, precipitation hardening, and quenching (quench hardening ) and tempering (temper hardening ). -
What is Spheroidizing?
Spheroidizing is a form of heat treatment for iron-based alloys, commonly carbon steels, in order to convert them into ductile and machinable alloys. -
What is the process annealing?
Definition of process annealing. : the process of softening steel by heating it to a temperature near but below the transformation range and then cooling slowly. -
How do you anneal 1095?
1) Heat to above non-magnetic (1400-1600F) and hold it there for a few minutes. Cool to black ( below 900F) and quench in water. 2) Heat to just below non-magnetic (about 1200-1300F) and hold there for a few minutes. Cool to black and quench in water. -
Can you anneal case hardened steel?
To anneal carbon steel you take it to 1400 degrees and hold that temp for 30 minutes then shut the kiln off with the part inside. This allows the temperature to go down gradually/evenly to give proper soft annealed state. -

Does annealing increase hardness?
Annealing is a heat treatment process used mostly to increase the ductility and reduce the hardness of a material. This change in hardness and ductility is a result of the reduction of dislocations in the crystal structure of the material being annealed. -
What happens when metal is annealed?
During the annealing process, the metal is heated to a specific temperature where recrystallization can occur. At this stage, any defects caused by deformation of the metal are repaired. The metal is held at that temperature for a fixed period, then cooled down to room temperature.

alright guys I'd like to take a few minutes to talk about cartridge-case annealing or stress-relieving now this is a Lapua 308 Winchester Palma case and it's an example of a nicely annealed or stress relieved cartridge case you can see the junction just below the the shoulder here there's a color change and that color change is indicative of the annealing or heat treating process that this brass went through because brass should be fairly hard in the case head area to withstand the pressure but it should be softer at the the front and the the softer portion at the front contributes to letting the the cartridge case expand and seal the chamber so that you don't get blowback by the the walls of the case and it also keeps the cartridge case more ductile in this area and it will survive more sizing and firing cycles before it splits so I'm just showing you that as an example of sort of an ideal situation we're going to look at some 7 62 by 54 brass that I have here and this has been fired in size the number of times this is Purvi Partizan brass with that cyrillic head stamp not sure exactly how many times this has been loaded and fired since the last time it was annealed but it's been it's also been polished a number of times and polishing in a case tumbler will remove the color from the heat treating process the traditional method of doing this or the suggested traditional method for accomplishing this involves standing the cartridge cases up in a pan of water heating in with a torch and tipping them over the problem with that is it leaves one side much more heated than the other so you get a very uneven distribution of heat through the this portion of the case and generally it reduces the case to a dead soft state which means it's easy to collapse the the shoulder when you're reloading it so ideally we don't want to actually anneal the brass what we want to do is just heat treat it or stress relieve the built-up stresses that are in the brass from firing and sizing so the method that I use doesn't involve anything other than just a simple torch you know propane powered torch and a container of water and your fingers so a lot of people will do this using a drill like a cordless drill with a socket chucked in it to rotate the brass in the flame I don't really like that method all that much because you really have no idea of how much heat is getting down to the case head and you don't want to soften the case head any because it needs to stay hard in order to withstand the pressures and the abuse that extraction gives it so my method involves just using your fingers to rotate the brass assuming you've got reasonably good feeling in your fingers you shouldn't get yourself hurt doing this on the other than the fact you are around a flame so obviously don't go sticking your fingers in the flame so we'll fire the torch up here and we'll demonstrate the procedure torch lit here yeah so basically just grasp the cartridge case with your fingers fold the neck into flame rotating it around and you can start to see the color change and before the cartridge gets to hold caught to hold on to just dunk it in the water simply repeat that with all your cartridge cases like I said assuming you've got reasonably good feeling in your fingers you will not let the cartridge case get too hot hold on who you can either drop the case completely in the water or just dunk the neck of in the water like I do see the color changing or that little bit of it this is we drop the case over the water and continue to rotate the cases to get the heat evenly spread around so humanely bit closer here so we're going to see the color change happening hopefully there's the cartridge case beforehand you want these to be fairly clean so you can see what's going on you can see the color change happening and there's what it looks like effort to be treated it doesn't take very long to do all your cases using this method just a few minutes just using caution of course so it's not to burn yourself I guess if you're safe enough to be around a gun you should be safe enough to be around a propane torch anyway doing this procedure to your case is every you know five or six reloads will dramatically extend their life prevent cracking and it will also prevent a lot of the the blowback around the cartridge case that you'll get when brass gets too hard now to keep your your gun and your accent cleaner and your brass cleaner as well so all in all it's a good simple process easy to do and it provides a good return on your investment in time because your brass will last a long time and brass is after all the most expensive component of your reloaded ammunition so there's there's the heat treated brass little water still left on it you can see the kind of the rainbow color change there and we'll compare that to two that haven't been done yet so you can see the difference there anyway that's my take on this procedure thanks for watching guys we will talk to you later
