Tonight hundreds of migrants dropped off at transit centers all around San Diego County are trying to find their way to a new home. Late this afternoon we heard Border Patrol was dropping off 200 asylum seekers. Sometime tonight, CBS 8 Anna Laurel got to El Cajon just as nearly 100 people were left at the transit center there. Anna, the MTS building, the building that the bus is actually pull up to, that's on the other end of this parking lot. When we pulled up, there were dozens of people standing out here. And we walked up to find out what was going on. We found out they were looking for transportation, but many of them did not speak English. Many were with young children. Their cell phones didn't work, and it's the Friday before Christmas. She says she feels very worried because she's in a place where she doesn't know anything or anyone here. That's how this mother from Colombia feels tonight as she moves her family one step closer to a new life in America. Her first stop, the El Cajon Transit Center, the five kids and nobody around her that she knows. She's scared, she's worried, she's nervous. Border Patrol vans dropped her and nearly 100 other asylum seekers off around 5:00 o'clock. They just gave her documentation. They dropped them off, told them to get their bags and that's it. I met. People from Colombia, Nicaragua, Ukraine and China, many trying unsuccessfully to use their phone or call an Uber. No signal. All their phones are from other countries like Nicaragua and Colombia. And they don't have service here, and there is no Wi-Fi here. But such is the plight of asylum seekers just days before the Supreme Court is expected to lift Title 42, the pandemic Era border policy that has prevented millions of migrants from entering the US to claim asylum. Do they give them money? Do they have final destinations? And no, we don't. We're not getting any answers on. County Supervisor Jim Desmond says the federal government dropped off 200 asylum seekers to transit centers in San Diego and Oceanside. Today we don't have any any spaces or shelters are full. Our hotels are full. The San Diego Rapid Response Network typically helps asylum seekers that get dropped off, but even they are at their limits, saying our resources and the current infrastructure have been stretched to capacity. So this weekend of Christmas, this mother and others like her will navigate a new country on their own, thankful they got a ride to take their next step to what they hope will be a new life. What are you looking for in America? For her kids in El Cajon, this is Anna Laurel for CBS8.
