welcome back to our channel Claire value tax my name is Brian Kim I'm a certified public accountants and today we're discussing nanny taxes so perhaps you're here because you want to try to do nanny taxes all by yourself from start to finish or perhaps it's because you want to use a third-party payroll provider yet you still want to understand what's going on behind the scenes and just get a better grasp of what's going on so you don't feel lost so perfectly understandable so let's just jump right into it what's the difference why do you have to go through all this and Auntie tax obligations compared to when you just drop off your kids at daycare so the difference is that when you drop off your kids at daycare the services provided on their premise at their location but for a nanny you're talking about the nanny comes to your place your property or location so now the now the property or location is on your premise just because of that one reason just due to that one reason now you're subject to nanny taxes because you're considered a household employer so that's the only difference if you drop off your kids at daycare at their location where they serve right the services provided off your site you're not subject to these requirements so just FYI that's the difference okay so let's just say yes you're getting a nanny you're subject to the ID taxes you're a household employer so I'm gonna break it down for you in five simple steps of what are your five obligations what you need to do to be in compliance with the nanny taxes okay your first step what you need to do is get your EIN your EIN is your employer identification number again this is because they're coming to your site your premise so you're considered a household employer so you need an identifying number that's the ein your employer identification number so you can get this directly from the IRS websites it's absolutely free it's instantaneous you just have to go through a questionnaire probably will take you longer than 15 minutes and at the end of it you're just identifying your information your basics and then after that questionnaire it's gonna spit out it's gonna output your yeah yeah immediately after again it's free attorneys they'll charge you hundreds of dollars to do the service but you can do it yourself on the IRS website it's this pretty self-explanatory we'll provide the link down below and you call so that's our website for the link as well okay so that was step number one moving on to step number two so step number two is that you need to withhold the taxes from your nanny so again you're a legitimate household employer you're a legitimate employer and you're paying a salary to nanny you need to hold taxes from the nanny but here's the thing you are not obligated there's no requirement for you to withhold federal taxes or state taxes from your nanny you do not have to if if they want you to yes you still can but you're not required to you're required to withhold Social Security and Medicare taxes from your nannies pay so what does this mean this just means that if you're gonna pay your nanny $100 you need to take some of that hold it from them for Social Security Medicare taxes and you send that in to the IRS so they're not gonna get paid 100 their net paycheck will be close to ninety two dollars because that eight dollars was for Social Security Medicare taxes roughly so you need to withhold taxes from your nanny again federal and state that's optional but Social Security or Medicare is a must so that's your second obligation you need to withhold taxes from your nanny okay and again you know we'll go in more details in a different video or log on to our website and you can get more details step number three is that you need to issue a w-2 at the end of the year so if you've been an employee before you probably know what the w-2 form is well now you're in the employers shoes because you are the employer and you're employing this nanny and because you're the employer when the year ends you need to provide an issue on w-2 to the nanny you also need to give a copy of that w-2 to the IRS well it's the Social Security Administration but it goes to the IRS so some of you might be not familiar with how to do this it's very simple again most of you have been employees most of you have received w2's you know it's just the simple form with your name address social security number and how much you are paid and how much taxes were withheld you need to provide that you need to create that where can you create that so many third parties offer this to you you can just do a google search at the end of the year you know help creating a w-2 there's so many there's endless providers that offer you this for cheap TurboTax you know which is owned by into it they offer the service w2 creation for you and it's very cheap so this service it's it's not a big deal you're just issuing and providing a w-2 that's it again there's so many third-party providers and vendors out there willing to offer this for you that are very reasonable rates okay the fourth obligation is on your personal income tax return when you're doing your personal taxes your 1040 now because you have a nanny the only thing different that you need to do is fill out Schedule H so let's just say you have interest income or dividends then you fill up Schedule B let's just say you have a business a sole proprietorship that you thought Schedule C or a rental property you fill out Schedule E you know those are examples well you have a nanny now you just need to fill out Schedule H that's all you need to do so what is scheduled each so scheduled each is just a summary of this is how much in taxes I've withheld from my nanny this is how much I need to send in to the IRS on my nanny's behalf so schedule H is just a summary of your obligations of your tax obligations for having that nanny if you've ever fill out TurboTax then you would you will know that you know everything will just Auto flow or Auto calculate you know based off your responses and most of the questions you know they're gonna be based off the w2 that you made for your nanny so spilling on Schedule H it's not that daunting of a task it's very straightforward and of course if you have questions you can ask them here so just know that you just need to fill out schedule each at the end of the year if you have a nanny so that's your obligation for the last obligation the fifth obligation is that you need to pay state unemployment taxes for your nanny and this is at the state level so you know whether honey we're in Chicago whether you live in Illinois or Texas or California you need to register with the state for a state unemployment accounts to pay unemployment taxes again don't don't think don't over complicate this it's not that difficult it's you just need to go to the state unemployment website your state deploy our Department of Employment Security and just register for an account depending on what state you live in I mean the annual unemployment tax stay our employment says it's usually than it range from about zero dollars to five hundred you know per year you know that's just an additional cost of having a nanny paying their state unemployment tax so again you just sign up for an account most are online most state agencies are online for state unemployment tax it says it's easier I guarantee you it's easy here than signing up for an account on Twitter or easier than signing up for an account Facebook I guarantee you it's so straightforward you're just signing up for another account and then you're paying the tax you know in the annual text it's as simple as that so with those five steps those are your obligations that you need to do for nanny taxes you know these para providers these nanny text service providers you know they're willing to package this up very nicely for you and you know but they're gonna charge a lot I mean relatively speaking they're probably gonna charge a thousand dollars or maybe even close to $1,500 for the year but if you want to try to tackle this task these tasks yourself then you know these are the five steps that you need to do so one other thing that I do want to mention is that going back to point number two where you have to withhold the nanny's taxes it's up to you whether you want to send those taxes in in installment payments throughout the course of the year as estimated tax payments or whether you just want to lump some of those at the end of the year when you do your tax return you can see my video about estimated tax payments to see whether it's necessary for you to do installment payments or if you just want to send all those Texas in and year ends okay so again if you want more information we're gonna leave the link below to our website below where you can get more details we go more in depth then we also have more videos covering this and all the sub topics you know that we're presented in this video if you find this helpful please give us a thumbs up or a like or a share and if you have any questions please leave them below and we'd be happy to get back to you thanks so much for tuning in until next time take
