so I was at the store the other day and it was so expensive this was the receipt they gave me which would be really funny if it was true and not just a clever way to introduce this project now novelty receipts are they useless uh yeah probably are they delightful also yes and either way you're gonna learn how to make them now the main reason I fall down this rabbit hole is because I wanted to come up with a tangible way to provide information without relying on a QR code and of course I learned that this technology can be misused for purely entertainment value see the beautiful thing about receipt paper is that not only can be printed very quickly but it doesn't require ink or toner instead of ink the secret ingredient is a thermal sensitive layer that's actually printed on top of the paper and when heat is applied it darkens for this demonstration I'll be using everyone's favorite ingredient which is fire and by applying heat to the surface of the paper you can see it slowly changes color now to utilize this concept thermal printers apply specific amounts of heat to different areas of the paper via the printhead in order to render information such as receipts and labels but these are boring and I don't want boring so instead I'm going to show you the easiest way I've found to print pretty much whatever you want onto a receipt for this project you'll need a receipt printer some receipt paper and a computer that can run Photoshop the printer I have is just a cheap one I bought for printing shipping labels but today we're gonna let its artistic side out I'll put a link in the description if you want the exact model with that it's time to jump over the computer so to create our Graphics the first step is going to be opening up Photoshop and then from there and go into create a new file and what's crucial here is that we actually need to set our canvas to the size of the paper we're using in my case it's going to be 80 millimeters wide and then for height I found somewhere between 300 and 400 millimeters to be what works best anything larger than that and the file actually becomes larger than what the printer can handle so we'll start with this for now and then we'll go ahead and create a new document as you can see this is what the receipt is actually going to look like size wise so now that our canvas is all set we can go ahead and import whatever graphic we want by going to file Place embedded and then picking the actual graphic we want so in this case I'm going to use surprise Pikachu and then we can just rotate this here and scale it to be about the size of our paper and now that that's all done we can place it and as you can see we now have our surprise Pikachu face on the receipt now once this is finished you can actually trim your canvas size to be the right length for whatever it is that you want to print so in this case let's say maybe 150. and that way we're not using up more paper than we need to when we print so I'm going to go ahead and replace this and now we're done something to note however for more complicated Graphics like this one is we need to actually remove this background color here because when the receipt printer tries to print it this is actually just going to render straight to Black so to do that go over to the Magic Eraser tool and then click on the background color if it isn't rasterize go ahead and do that and then once that's done this all goes to White which will show up great on the printer because the rest of these Graphics are all going to be printed dark now that the background is removed you're ready to export so go up to file export and then export it as a PNG name it whatever you want save it and then you're good to move on to the next step as you can see we have our freshly exported PNG here but before we can start printing we first need to adjust our printer settings to match our canvas settings so go in and find your printer hit manage hit printing preferences and then we need to add a custom paper profile so in this case I've already created one but you want to make sure that you have the width of the paper matching the receipt paper you have and the paper length set to whatever you have as your canvas length in Photoshop once that's done you can save it and hit OK then you can go back to the PNG and actually print it out so go ahead and open up the printer dialog make sure that your correct printer is selected the orientation is set to Portrait and that we have our custom paper selected as well once that's all done you can ensure that shrink to fit is enabled just in case something overhangs and then hit print with the hard part out of the way now you can print as many of these bad boys as you want [Applause] [Music] thank you foreign [Music] well root of this project was not seeing whether or not a receipt printer could make memes but looking beyond what something does and wondering what can it do oh and by the way I did end up creating a
