I'm J Horton I make movies that make money this is how today we're talking about casting named talent in your independent movie or cover box casting what does that even mean so you come across a movie on Netflix or Amazon that you've never heard of but the art looks pretty cool and it stars a pretty decent past a or B Lister so you take a chance and you throw it on now besides the fact that the movie turns out absolutely horrible the actor you even turn the movie on for in the first place is hardly even in it out of a 90 minute runtime the actor on the poster appears in five or ten minutes of the movie one producer I used to work with calls these his gotcha titles and they've made dozens of movies that successfully employ this bait-and-switch tactic making and selling Indies in today's climate is increasingly hard it's hard to raise the money it's hard to find locations you can afford it's hard to find decent distribution it's hard just to hold it together and then if you are lucky enough to finish your movie it's super hard to make any decent money it's no wonder that producers resort to things like Cover box casting to increase the odds of their movies making a profit now let me qualify something I don't think that there's anything wrong with adding named talent to your supporting cast to help sell a movie but you shouldn't advertise that movie has starring that person they shouldn't have top-line credit but producers know that what this actor top lining some decent cover art the movie is much more likely to earn its money back even a few years back you could make a mediocre indie movie for say $50,000 put somebody like it's in for a few minutes and probably do okay those days are pretty much gone a lot of the actors that these producers are using are now oversaturated to the point where they can actually hurt a movie's distribution chances or performance I've overheard more than one distributor at them or can say they'd scream if one more indie filmmaker walked in with a movie starring Hertz or another problem with cover box casting is the disproportionate cost of the actor especially when you're talking about a super low budget movie at these levels a producer may shell out over 30% of an incredibly low budget movie to cover the cost of the often inappropriate talent this isn't like Universal paying Tom Cruise 20 million of a 200 million dollar budget where they still have a hundred and eighty million dollars to make the movie this is spending between like six to ten thousand dollars of a thirty thousand dollar budget or sixty thousand dollars of a hundred thousand dollar budget and not having enough left to produce the movie at the base level it needs to be to be competitive and...
