Mandy and i have been working on a lot of grants this week, and we wanted to share a few quick tips with you about the grant writing process. How many of you feel like every time you get a grant proposal, you pull it out and it's just an excruciating process? If you feel like that, you're really not alone. I would want to encourage you to try a simple trick and that is creating a grant template. We have lots and lots of clients that come to us to ask for help with this, and it really is worth your while if you can do it on your own, we encourage you to start with the following trips, tricks. Pull up any grant template - one that's pretty comprehensive. It might be a SunTrust grant, it could be a grant that maybe you're not even eligible for, but just a grant template that you've seen, and get a word document, open it up and try to answer all of those questions. So for example, pull up a SunTrust grant, pull up North Carolina Unifour foundation grant, or something, something that you can readily transfer over to a word document, and literally start at the beginning. Enter in your organizational data, enter into your project description, enter in the project design, your needs assessment, all of those things before you even start writing a single grant. You might have done some grant research and realized that you are eligible for a grant in the fall, and we're only in the summer right now. If you take the time to fill out a grant template before you even get the application, you're gonna be that much more prepared. You might realize that there are gaps in your project design, you might realize that you need to have a community partnership conversation before you can make this happen, and more often than not you might say -oh my goodness, we need to get this information about our budget before we can really write a competitive grant. We've had several clients recently come to us and they had a hard time distinguishing the difference between a program and a project, so they need project dollars or they need program dollars. What's the difference? A program is a program or something that you run over a longer period of time. If you run an after-school program, it's a program. It's something that doesn't necessarily have beginning and end date. You continue that program. A project might be for a special thing that contributes to your after-school program. So maybe you were going to buy a new curriculum, or maybe you are going to do an enrichment activity with the children, something that has a start and an end date. That would be a project within your program design. So you might use your program to share impact and talk about how the project that specific need is going to increase the impact of your program in the long run or for that year.
