in this video we'll cover how to rename and label variables and variable values I've opened a dataset that includes the following variables ID years of age years of education gender happiness and hours of TV per week you can see some of these variable names are so long they don't fit in the variables window in general it's a good strategy to get variables short but unambiguous names this saves typing reduces errors and also makes displays easier for example let's tabulate years of education I can either type tabulate or the abbreviation tab then the variable I want in fact I can just double click on the variable name in the variable window and then type enter in the command window you can see that the variable name is so long it wraps over two lines results are often easier to read if you have short enough variable names that they can fit on one line there are several ways to rename variables one way to do so is through the variables manager I can select the variable I want and change its name over here in the name field then I click apply here in the variables window we can see that it's been renamed I can do much the same via the data menu I'll click on data utilities and then rename groups of variables this option is nice because it lets you change multiple variable names at once I'll choose years of age and years of education and change them to age and edgy for education again we can see that the variables have been renamed when you use the toolbar or drop down menus Stata issues the relevant command for you you can see both the command and the result here in the results window the third strategy I can use to rename a variable is to enter the command directly myself so if I want to rename the gender of respondent variable to simply gender I can type renamed gender of respondent in the command window or even click on the variable name here and then type the new name and hit enter again we can see that the variable has been renamed similarly I can rename multiple variables this way in the results window we have an example of how to rename multiple variables I can copy that example by clicking on it in the review window I can run the command by typing rename followed by the set of variable names and parentheses and then the set of new names in parentheses or by deleting the variables from the prior example and adding the ones I want to use now and then type enter we can see that all the variables have now been renamed now I have nice compact variable names still it can be useful to give each variable a longer description you can do this through a label in fact I'm going to use some of the old...
