music behind oh my goodness it is so good to be with y'all welcome welcome to 2021 okay well glad you are here 21 yes we we somehow made it uh we are making it i will say this year has been a lot crazier than last year and it's only like what week three it's true and at 9 21 it'll be 21 21 21 21 all of that yeah yeah don't think about that too hard um man yes so this this this year has been insane for me um so started off day three of the year actually day two of the year with uh with covid so then was in 10 days of quarantine to get out for three days to have cataract surgery then i don't know if you've been around the bsm today but it was crazyville's um and [Music] at one point there is water gushing from the ceiling and a sweet plumber with like a five buck gun gallon bucket and that was just like he shouldn't have even had a bucket it was just like pouring all over him but i will say in this year i am grateful for the staff that i work with and the ways that they have stepped up stepped in helped out took over when i couldn't be here in person and filled in because of cataract surgery i can't lift things or bend over and they have served in the manner of which jesus serves and i am so grateful for them and grateful that i get to work here so we're going to be at mark 16 today and then we're also going to be in matthew a little bit later at the end but we're going to start in mark we're continuing our theme this semester of butt god because if last year last semester taught us anything and maybe if you have had the beginning of 2021 as i have we still need but god to show up and change things and do things that we can't imagine and we can't do ourselves and so we are going to continue that theme and we have um different ministers who will be coming every week um so excited to hear from them some of them from different churches that y'all go to some of maybe new new ministers that y'all get to know and excited about about that so i want to set up mark mark 16 and the very end of mark we're going to look at the resurrection but to to look at the resurrection i want us for a second to remember those days that day before right here the disciples have fled some of them are kind of around but not right there in the middle of it with jesus they have seen jesus arrested they've seen him accused unfairly they've seen him transported to higher authorities who could do something um horrific with his life um they have seen him once again be accused they saw uh people ask for a criminal in his place to take him as the criminal and let go the criminal then they saw him flogged and beaten and put a crown of thorns on his head and then if that were not enough to carry his own cross and then to crucifixion now just for a second think of the most difficult thing you've watched a loved one go through maybe that was an illness or something hard a difficult relationship and you felt helpless you could not do anything to stop it you couldn't do anything to make it better this is a situation that the disciples that the the women that we're going to look at this is what they found themselves and all this was happening to jesus their friend their companion almost like a brother to them and they could not do anything about it all they could do was watch try to become bring comfort by being around them around him during that time but they really could not stop it from happening i remember when when i was in junior high my sister was diagnosed with cancer she was a year older than i was and in that time there was confusion we didn't really know what it was at the moment there was um sadness like was this was this something serious that would take her life there was uncertainty there was fear there's all these emotions and maybe you've been in a place where you've had all of those types of emotions rolling around so that's where we're going to find these women and it says at the end of 15 that after jesus's crucifixion joseph when asked for um for not joseph his dad but another joseph sometimes there's lots of people with the same name um as for his body and said i i will put him in a tomb which was a huge risk we don't think about that roman people roman centurions roman officials did not let people down off the cross we think that's a common thing because we know this story but the whole point of the cross is that it would be a billboard to the whole world don't mess with rome so they let them stay their bodies stay up there until they literally fell off so for for them to their officials to give joseph his body was a significant thing he said i want to honor him by putting him in this tomb well mary magdalene and the other mary as often we see the mother of joseph they followed joseph to see where where was this tomb and it was getting late on the sabbath and if you know anything about the sabbath you can't do anything once the sun sets it is sabbath and you are you you have to remain in your home you can um you you have to have prepared before then and so they have to wait so not only has this horrific event happen now they have to wait wait in the uncertainty wait in the sorrow wait in the fear but then we pick up in 16. so so mark 16 starting in verse 1 when the sabbath was over mary magdalene mary the mother of james and salome brought spices so that they might go to anoint jesus's body very early on the first day of the week just after sunrise they were on their way to the tomb and they asked each other who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb but when they looked up they saw that the stone which was very large had been rolled away as they entered the tomb they saw a young man dressed in white in a right robe sitting on the right side and they were alarmed don't be alarmed he said you are looking for jesus the nazarene who is crucified he is risen he is not here see the place where they laid him but go tell his disciples and peter he is going ahead of you into galilee there you will see him just as he told you trembling and bewildered the women went out and fled from the tomb they said nothing to anyone because they were afraid so here here are the women bringing the spices to prepare the body which would have been custom and this is not going to be a pleasant experience this is a a they're walking into their sorrow their grief they're going to be face to face with death they're going to honor jesus's body by preparing him with these spices there's been so much grief and if you've ever lost somebody you may know this feeling of like your mind not being able to like think of all the details that have to happen or all the things that you need to plan for well this is them because they're on their way and all of a sudden someone had an idea we saw them roll that stone in front of the tomb who's gonna roll that away right have you ever gotten in the middle of your plans like you you have like worked it out and then you realize you forgot one of the most significant ones that's probably never happened on y'all's homework or anything your projects you're like oh i just forgot to i was supposed to do that with that project yeah so they're they're thinking through this maybe even trying to figure out like i don't know how much laundry have you been carrying lately you've been working out you've been carrying water like what is your what maybe all three of us together can can push this but it says they looked up and this the stone was rolled away now this is early in the morning sun is just beginning to rise and it's like when you read mark's gospel mark doesn't play with words he's not flowery he's like straight to the point and he's trying to do everything very quickly so you'll read in mark's gospel say immediately immediately immediately so there's no like standing around wondering like huh i wonder who rolled that away you think somebody else came here and prepared his body how did that how did that get there i didn't didn't you see them roll that stone in front of it like there's no no questioning they just start walking into the tomb see i'm like grew up with like super precaution i've been like why is that open you go in and check it out i'm staying right here you tell me if it's safe in there right but they walk in and if you've ever walked into a place that's just a little bit creepy you know that's maybe a little dark supposed to be quiet if you've ever been in a church when like nobody's in there it's weirdly creepy right but think about you're in a tomb you're in a place of death it's not like mood lighting and pretty it's kind of dark in there and now the corner of their eye they see a person shannon would have said goodbye right i'm in a tomb and there's a person sitting up i'd have been like peace to y'all got to leave right but no they they do get fearful and this person um this this angel it just says young man in in mark's gospel and others it talks about an angel and other in other account in other gospels it's talking about two angels there um but he just whittles it down to one because this is this is mark's gospel he whittles it down to the one that's going to speak to them right he says there's this this young man and he says um don't be alarmed uh too late don't be alarmed you are looking for jesus the nazarene who was crucified he says i i know what you're looking for i know why you came here this jesus of nazarene who was crucified he has risen right this is the first good news i don't i don't know if we can really put into context if you knew somebody was dead and then somebody said nah they're not psyched people say psych anymore uh okay good uh he's not dead he's risen right these women don't necessarily like oh thank goodness man our job's just gonna be a lot easier today let's just go home right they can't even comprehend that they can't take this all in of what's happening he says but go tell his disciples and peter especially peter right tell peter he is going ahead of you into galilee and there you will see him just as he told you see the angel is not just telling him some like random story he says remember all those times that you were with him i know that he talked to the disciples but no you were you were a disciple too you were there with him and he said that he would meet you in galilee that he has some more things to tell you go there like he said he and you're gonna see him again i don't know what your reaction might be at that moment right of confusion fear is this really happening i don't know if somebody's ever told you something that your mind could not process right that that that that family situation where you're like i don't have room in my i don't have a compartment in my brain to put this or that information about a friend that you thought you always knew and there's this big revelation and there's no place for that in your brain i think that's a lot of where these women find themselves in mark's gospel you might see in your in your version if you look in your bible you might see a line some kind of delineation right after this verse this last verse says trembling and bewildered the women went out and fled from the tomb they said nothing to anyone because they were afraid that was the the oldest manuscripts of mark that we have that was the ending right think about if you've read this whole story of jesus and then it was like and then that he was resurrected and he told the people go tell him and they're like i'm i'm just going to go home i'm scared and you're like that is the worst ending to the story i have ever read right but you might say that there's some other verses um so a little bible scholarship because y'all are in college and y'all can y'all want to learn things so this is probably the um this is the most held to ending of mark now there's this tension right of like well then how did the rest of us know um there are some some thought by scholars that there was a there was more to the ending but that got lost um because of matthew matthew and luke use mark as a source when they're writing their gospels and they have more to the ending of the story so they think maybe the original original ending um was there some think that mark leaves it in this tension this tension we don't like so that we will feel the tension of will we tell right because if you just leave it as and then they said nothing and you're looking he's like this is the resurrection how do you say nothing he was not in that tomb but then you think about the own parts in your life where you've known the resurrection of jesus in your own life and have kept quiet and maybe mark who's this great literary writer is trying to pull us into that tension and say will you say something or will you remain quiet because when we remain quiet it doesn't make sense with the rest of the story the rest of the story is a story that needs to be told so for us to think about man if we are walking outside of that tomb right they had walked in with fear with their confusion with their uncertainty with their questions but also with their duty they were coming they were doing what they were supposed to do prepare the body and they they left and in mark's got in mark's ending they still have this fear they're trembling they're bewildered they're still confused i love that mark is so honest because we can find ourselves in that exact place there are things where the lord shows up and we're still confused we're still bewildered we're still uncertain we're not really did that really happen can i dare to say that will i get in trouble will people ridicule me for that will they accuse me of being a liar see mark's honest in this ending but this isn't the only ending right because if they never said anything well this would be a very empty room somehow we heard let's go over to matthew's gospel the end of matthew matthew 28. and matthew has a very very similar story um he has a few details he he writes differently he's he's more he's more detailed and he's his purpose is more towards the jewish community and showing how this fulfills the scripture um and he you know he's we're at the resurrection in matthew's gospel at chapter 28 we were at the resurrection at chapter 16 for mark's gospel um some of y'all are to the point people some of y'all could tell a story for ages um you know who you are um so so for y'all who like like to tell all the details of the story matthew here is your here's your soul soul friend here in storytelling so so he has many of the same same details so we're going to pick it up in in five and not go all the way and read through everything says the angel said to the women do not be afraid for i know that you're looking for jesus who is crucified he is not here he has risen just as he said come and see the place he lay then go quickly and tell his disciples he has risen from the dead and is it going it is going ahead of you to galilee there you will see him now i have told you so the women hurried away from the tomb afraid yet filled with joy and ran and told the his disciples and it goes on from there and they tell him and um jesus meets up with jesus meets up with them on the way there and they end up telling the disciples so but i wanted to to focus on that ending right two different ways of exiting the tomb so in mark's gospel and this doesn't mean that one's wrong the way that the gospels are written there's different different points to them right and the truth is we can be both we can be both the one who exits the tomb in bewilderment and fear and remains silent and we can be the one who exits the tomb with fear and yet joy and telling others what has happened right to the same story two different perspectives of how how to exit the tomb why is this important so but god last year was not easy right think about the spring think about after spring break just so hard it seems like forever ago it wasn't even a year ago but forever ago i feel like covet days are like longer than real days things are difficult we can walk out into the world with fear and trembling and say this is too hard why even try maybe there's not that many students on campus maybe it's it's easier to just stay home and i get there there's reasons there's there's health issues right we need to be safe but are we living only in our fear or are we stepping out into the world with our fear but also with the joy that god has given us to say there's still some things that we can do there's still some people who need to hear there are some ways in which we can serve there's some friendships that can be made right they said this is what the lord has said for them it was you go and tell these people this thing right maybe maybe the maybe you didn't wake up this morning and the lord said andrew go and tell the disciples in peter to meet me in galilee right you probably didn't probably didn't wake up but what has the lord asked you to do what has he said to you are to do you are here as a student but you're here for other purposes god has a plan for you wants to use you he wants relationship with you he wants you to grow in your faith so even in our fear and uncertainty in our confusion and bewilderment i love that they use the word bewilderment how many of you have been bewildered this year immediately i'm still bewildered second day of class and i looked at my syllabi [Laughter] yeah that bewilderment uncertainty confusion maybe all of that even has to do with what has god called you to do what will you do with that there was a quote this um this sunday that pastor used from w paul jones it says what you see is from the perspective of where you set up shop i choose to set up shop outside the empty tomb and i love that perspective right because to think of man if every day i'm stepping out into the world but remembering right within hand's reach is the empty tomb see when the women came up to that tomb in their minds they were thinking we can't even move this rock in front of it and what would what had already happened that rock was like a pebble compared to what had happened inside with death and sin right they were worried about this temporal thing right in front of him we are not strong enough to move this stone and the lord was like move a stone watch me break chains in your life and watch me take your sin and do away with it and say that you're forgiven eternally i will rip curtains i will shake grounds i will scare centurions who you are afraid of oh man that stone that was easy breezy says that's what i can do now here's the one thing i'm going to ask you to do will you go tell somebody what just happened they were worried about a stone but he had something bigger planned for them something they couldn't do by themselves they couldn't move the stone by themselves he said i got that and they couldn't go and tell everybody on their own power but the joy of the lord really was their strength and so even though they had the fear they had the joy of what they had just experienced and they knew and they saw that jesus had risen so they can go and do the thing that god called them to do so that's my question for us this semester what will god call you to and will you step out of that calling out of that dark place maybe even that scared place and will you step out just in your fear and your anxiousness and your bewilderment will you step out in faith and say i have no idea what just happened but i'm going for it because if you do man what will god do from those three women the world has heard the gospel think about it from those three people who he said go and tell them i ain't dead you sit here because they said that what would happen on this campus in the city in this state in this world if we just said i don't even know what happened but let me tell you about jesus could change everything and i'm banking on that so maybe here maybe you're here today here tonight maybe you're like no i'm in the bewilderment i'm in the confusion i don't even know that this is true we want to walk with you in that you don't have to have it all figured out they didn't always have it all figured out we want to walk in that explore that together because we believe it's true and if it's true then we believe that others will find that it's true as well maybe god's calling you to something and he said i just don't know i can do it we want to walk with you in that too we want to pray over you and say man where you don't have to do it by yourself this is a community we're a family together and if you're looking for a place of perfect people you're gonna have to go find a different ministry we can't even keep our ceiling from leaking and i've had to change clothes twice today because this morning my drink exploded on myself there's water happening everywhere today so we are not perfect but we want to do this together so the band's going to come to to play um and i just encourage you take this time man maybe it's just to commit again to like what will this semester be maybe it's to commit to the lord i'm not going to fear this semester i'm going to live in joy and i'm going to live in faith because the resurrection has happened and we can do that maybe you just need somebody to pray over you we have a staff here you know we love to pray over you maybe you're like i don't know about this jesus not sure about him his stories are whack but i'm showing up so i want to want to continue to do that with others so i don't know what your story is but i'm glad you're here and i'm glad this semester we're going to walk out of tombs and tell people about jesus and be transformed in the process so let me pray god here we are and we come in this year in the semester of craziness where we have been bewildered we have been fearful we have been uncertain but lord you're a god of joy and of faith and you're a god who can roll away stones and take away sin and tear curtains that separate us so god this is a story we want to tell to the nations we want to tell to our our our fellow students and maybe for some of us we need to tell to ourselves holy spirit do a work in us whatever that work is that you need to do today we pray this in the name of jesus amen hey guys go ahead and stand and worship with us our last song tonight is going to be called holy water [Music] again knew [Music] is like the sound of the symphony to my ears [Music] [Music] is [Music] you [Music] is like the sound of a symphony to my ears [Music] oh god thank you that we're here tonight um thank you god we hear you we see you and thank you for being so faithful god thank you for this message that we heard um help us to just carry it um to believe in what you have done for us to believe that you did come that you did die but you didn't stay there that you rolled the stone away that you rose again and that you brought redemption for all of us so help us to believe um help us to go on with our lives being different because of everything we've done and help us have a great rest of the week you know hello um so if y'all are wondering how like what shannon was saying how to go out and share the gospel how to share this good news with people that jesus is risen um tomorrow we have mission lab at 11 here at the bsm and on zoom um it's only going through how to share the gospel and be praying together for the people in our lives who are non-believers and having that together as a community and being able to just learn how to share with them then also we have multiple bible studies that are happening that are starting up um so there will be two happening on tuesdays at 8pm there will be romans that will be led by lucas and then colossians owned by shannon and the one over colossians will be on zoom and um uh in person and while lucas's over romans is just here in person at the bsm um there's also international bible study happening on thursdays at 9. um then there is also coffeehouse on oh coffee house on
