whence the sabbath came jesus entered the synagogue and taught they were astounded at his teaching for he taught them as the one having authority not as the scribes just when there was there was in their synagogue a man without with an unclean spirit and he cried out what have you to do with us jesus of nazareth have you come to destroy us i know who you are the holy one of god but jesus rebuked him saying be silent and come out of him and the unclean spirit convulsing the man and crying with a loud voice came out of him they were all amazed and they kept on asking one another what is this a new teaching with authority he commands even the unclean spirits and they obey them obey him as one at once jesus fame began to spread throughout the surrounding region of galilee the gospel of the lord well i just want to start from a little story my dear friends so imagine uh enormous powerful american battleship that travels at night around uh nova scotia's coastline you know after completing some military maneuvers and suddenly its radio comes on it says canadian navy to american battleship have detected what you uh that you are on a collision course with us please alter your course five degrees north by northeast to avoid the collision over well the ship's captain looks at his crewmates give them a wink and picks up the radio he replies american battleship to canadian navy you are on a collision course with us please alter your course five degrees south by south west to avoid the collision collision over the radio comes back on canadian navy to american battleship we cannot do that please alter your course five degrees north by northeast to avoid the collision over in his best show of authority the captain takes the radio and says american battleship to canadian navy we are the uss lincoln one of the most powerful largest naval vessels in the entire us navy and we also escorted by multiple support ships if you do not alter your course we will for we will be forced to defend ourselves to avoid the collision over the radio goes silent for a moment finally it comes back on canadian navy to american battleship we are a lighthouse your call over well of course uh the story featuring this battleship and lighthouse it's basically a joke i don't think it's actually ever happened but it is quite allegorical and the truth is that we all have a tendency to either underestimate or overestimate boundaries of our authorities just think about yourself today's readings are all just about that speaking and acting with authority so who are our authorities our modern prophets that we are listening to do they speak to us in the name of the lord or in the name of their own interests and how do we know the difference and then what is the source of their authority and what the source of authority for each one of us what is a source of authority for me what is a source of authority for you well uh i'm a married man and authority in my house called house called is quite clear well uh unlike father kevin no matter what i think about myself as a source of authority in my house if my wife tells me to wash the dishes i have to do it without further questions asked and that call called not not fear but trust and respect similarly through the church history we underwent several critical transitions and with our 2000 years all history only in 1869 doctrine of papal infallibility uh came and after second vatican council came all in order to understand our relationships with the source of authority as we have it today are we really clear we are not necessary on the same page all of us we all have a different opinions at present many or ordinary catholics welcome greater freedom on individual uh conscious while others long for a return to a clean cut edge of dogma defined and unquestionable well is it good or bad at times it feels like a deep division between us so we actually have a different conversation sometimes we argue with each other and the question is often not how to get us all together and be one but how ready we are to take individual responsibility for our own words for our own choices and for our own preferences also how do we exercise our religious freedoms in today's intensely secular secular world can we validate the beliefs of others as seriously as we validate our own beliefs well perhaps we can get some light uh today from uh from the gospel where jesus teaches with authority and not as their scribes our knowledge of god comes to us well from many sources including personal revelations including personal uh experiences have you had those experiences but primarily it comes from jesus the word of god who makes the father known to us if we pay attention to his gospel read at mass every sunday or give time to the private reading of holy scripture the main lines of our lord's teaching should be clear for you apart from reading or hearing the word of the gospel we have the prompting and guidance of christ's spirit if we take time to pray if we take time to reflect if we take take time to let our conscience come awake in god's presence what you do to be present to the divine to be present to god but it cannot be done without being closely connected to the world where disregard were disregard for inherited human dignity in forms of poverty systematic inequity and structural racism still exist right here in front of us as a matter of fact the primary purpose of authority among christians is to keep the lord's word alive among the human community to keep us reminded of what he said and still says to us his followers we do expect our leaders to be grounded in the in to ground their teachings in the welsh spring of the gospel yet somehow beyond any other authority christ himself is the prophetic authority he who is the way the truth and the life we are aware that our world is broken and divided yet it is always has been broken and divided that is why we are in perpetual need of god's presence in our midst in our never-ending quest for to repair what is broken in our never-ending pursuit of social justice and peace god presence in the world and thus god's authority in the world can be possible only through minds through hearts and through hands of men and women you let's proclaim our faith which has been handed down to us from generation to generation to generation i believe in god the father almighty creator of heaven and earth and in jesus christ his only son our lord who is conceived by the holy spirit born of the virgin mary suffered under pontius pilate was crucified died and was buried he descended into hell on the third day he rose again from the dead he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of god the father almighty from there he will come to judge the living and the dead i believe in the holy spirit the holy catholic church the communion of saints the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body and life everlasting amen together god's presence is in our mind in our hearts and in our hands we open our hearts wide and pray for our needs and pray to you o lord for the world in which we live and to which we are called we pray to the lord for canada for nations of the world and for world's peace we pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer for unity among christians we pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer god we come to you in our need to ask your protection against the covet 19 that has disturbed and even claimed lives we pray that you guide the people task to find curse a cure for this disease and to stem its transition transmission protect the medical experts that they may minister to the sick with competence and compassion we pray for those afflicted may they be restored to health soon protect those who care for them grant eternal rest to those who have died give us the grace in in this trying time to work for the good of all and to help those in need we implore you to stop the spread of this virus grant all those through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever [Music] your words are spirit and life oh lord richer than gold stronger than death your words are spirit and life oh lord life everlasting god's love is perfect refreshing the soul reviving the weary's [Music] bringing god's wisdom to birth [Music] your duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for in you we live and move and have our being and while in this body we not only experience the daily effects of your care but even now possess the pledge of life eternal for having received the first fruits of the spirit through whom you raised up jesus from the dead we hope for an comments from our parishioners how appreciative they are of being able to have the mass online and so very much uh freddie thank you very much for your for your musical ministry and all who does music i really want to thank you alan for your work week after week doing camera and all the tech work you do and in a particular way too i thank you deacon stefan for for your presence in the parish your preaching is inspiring and um and just for your support and your friendliness and your joy and just it's really wonderful so just i'm really glad you're we're together uh a blessed sacrament and maybe
