[Music] all eyes are on the US Senate now well I guess not all eyes some of them are looking at other things including this right on the money episode that's very cool um yep speaking of eyes Focus Jason the reason we're here and the reason we're watching the upper chamber of Congress is because time is running out on this session and on any bills that haven't yet made it across the legislative Finish Line one of which could increase social security benefits for millions of people the bill is called the social security Fairness Act it would cancel two things that currently limit a lot of Social Security checks the windfall elimination provision and the government pension offset both of those limitations have been in place for decades and basically they reduce or even eliminate someone's Social Security payment if that person is also getting a monthly payment from certain pensions these can affect a retiree or their spouse or their dependence if they receive Social Security benefits and monthly payments from a pension that was based on a job where Social Security taxes were not taken out one example what if someone was a journalist for 12 years and got paid uh not quite that much yeah that's more like it and uh FICA taxes were taken out of that pay too which means he contributed to Social Security but then he decided to quit that gig and become a teacher or a police officer or a firefighter and he started paying into a government pension plan but no longer into Social Security when he retires someday some Glorious Day supporters of of the Social Security Fairness Act say the benefits that he earned in that first 12 years shouldn't be reduced or eliminated just because he later became a public servant with a pension but opponents say no why should the guy with a government pension be rewarded for just 12 years of contributions to Social Security when I paid into it my whole adult life or why should a pensioner who never paid into Social Security get full spousal Social Security benefits critics worry that this could all put an additional Financial strain on the social safety net Texas has the most people by the way who stand to benefit from part of this law if it passes the house already o it with the overwhelming and bipartisan support from Texas Representatives I'll keep an eye on that and keep you updated so follow me at Jason Wheeler TV on Facebook threads in Blue Sky where I posted an article on this topic today to help you be right on the money
