hello i'm andrew hayes and i'll be running this online second course on mediation moderation and conditional process analysis it is a second course because it covers more advanced material than covered in my first course that you most likely have already taken if you've not taken a course from me introducing the fundamentals you can still benefit from this course so long as you have already familiarized yourself with the principles of mediation moderation and conditional process analysis as described in the first edition of my book by the same name unless you've taken a course from me recently it's important that you work through the review modules to make sure that you are familiar with these fundamentals in this course we will cover material not already addressed in the first course and most of it you will not find in the first edition of the book this course does include content that's in the second edition of the book released in 2017 but several of the modules go beyond even the second edition such as modules on moderated serial mediation and conditional process models with multiple moderators but whether you consider yourself a novice to this material or more seasoned i'm sure you will learn many things in this course that are new to you and i welcome any feedback you wish to provide to me through the discussion board for this course or the email address given to you in course materials that you have access to through the course portal now please enjoy look here at all the fun we're going to have in this online course we start out the course with a neat and intriguing model a conditional process model that is a blend of parallel multiple mediation and moderation what's so neat about models like this is that they allow you to capture something that i call differential dominance which happens when one one mechanism is dominant over another in the process at work linking some causal agent x to an outcome variable y for some people or in some contexts whereas another different mechanism is dominant in the process for some other type of person or in some other context we then transition to the serial mediation model discussing how a causal agent x can influence y through more than one mediator while allowing one mediator to influence another mediator although this serial mediation model is an interesting model in and of itself our discussion of the serial mediation model is mere background information needed to tackle one of the models about which i receive many questions but have written very little and that is a moderated serial mediation model a model that blends serial mediation with moderation the next few modules in this course all have a common feature they are all dedicated to models with a multi-categorical causal agent x or moderator w such as when x or w is experimentally manipulated but there are more than two levels of the manipulation for example a control group and two or three treatment groups after examining mediation analysis with a multi-categorical independent variable x we then examine moderation when focal predictor x or moderator w is multi-categorical with these two kinds of problems understood we then integrate the principles covered thus far in a conditional process model but with a multi-categorical x after this we abandoned mediation for the time being and focused just on moderation analysis tackling models with two moderators of a common focal predictor x's effect there are two versions of multiple moderation addressed in this course in one version two moderators additively and linearly combined influence x's effect on y in the other variation also known as a model of three-way interaction we allow one variable to moderate the moderation of x's effect on y by a second moderator i call this moderated moderation all of the models that i will have discussed up to this point in this class can be estimated with any program that can conduct ordinary least squares regression analysis however we will instead be relying largely on process a computational tool for spss sas and r that i've developed that simplifies the estimation of models of this sort visualizing them and interpret and interpreting moderation mediation and conditional process models both large and small most people who use process stick to models that are pre-programmed yet sometimes you'll want to estimate a model that is not already programmed so the next module in the course teaches you how to construct a custom model of your own or modify a pre-programmed model so that it better conforms to the kind of model you want to estimate you'll see how to do that in process the last two modules in the course are dedicated to conditional process models with two moderators so these are mediation models that allow for moderation of one or more paths by more than one moderator depending on the configuration of the model that is which path is moderated and by how many moderators it's possible to conceive of and answer questions about partial moderated mediation conditional moderated mediation and moderated moderated mediation process can help us out with the computations which can be fairly complex but fairly simple to understand when you keep your thinking organized peppered throughout this course are six activities that you can attempt that i hope will challenge your thinking as well as test your understanding about some of the concepts that we discuss peppered throughout this course are a number of activities that you can attempt that i hope will challenge your thinking as well as test your understanding about some of the concepts that we discuss following each activity is a video in which i provide and explain the answers this is a hands-on course i want you to get some experience doing some of these analyses yourself that means things will work best if you have a computer in front of you with either spss sas or r installed that is a reasonably recent version if you're using r all you need is base r no special packages will be needed or used in this course if you're using sas you want to make sure you have proc iml installed second you're going to need various data files and programs for spss sas and r of course i'm providing these to you these are available on the course portal packaged in a zip archive near the top of the sequence of modules you should download and unpack this archive also in the archive is a pdf of all the slides in this course you may want to print these if you like taking notes the old-fashioned way but you could also take notes electronically on the pdf if you want or you could use the note feature that might be available on the course portal where you're reviewing the videos as this is a second course i assume that you've taken the first course or otherwise have deemed yourself knowledgeable enough on the fundamentals to be able to understand this more complicated material there is a set of videos available on the course portal that you can use as review if you want i recommend viewing these or at least skimming through them just in case the material in this class will start getting complicated fairly quickly though the math is never particularly difficult the ideas and formulas will come at you quickly and they will get more abstract as we advance in the course you will also need to be comfortable with the fundamentals and practice of ordinary least squares regression analysis everything we do in this class will be based on ordinary least squares regression that means in all examples in this class the variables we have on the left hand sides of equations that will generally be mediators and outcomes m and y we will assume are quantitative or continuous measurements and that you would be comfortable and willing to analyze these using ordinary least squares regression we won't be analyzing dichotomous or ordinal categorical outcomes though variables like this might be on the right hand sides of regression equations in many of our examples although many of the computations we will be doing can be completed with any ols regression program your ols program will only get you so far furthermore if you relied only on your regression program you'll find yourself working much harder than you need to we will be using process as our computational engine some prior experience with process version 3 will be helpful if you have used process before you want to make sure that you're familiar with how to talk to it using syntax as opposed to if you're an spss user using the point and click menus the video toward the beginning of the sequence of videos provides a lesson on setting up process and getting it ready to use okay enough said i hope you enjoy the next dozen or so hours of video content i know that if you are following along and practicing with the data i provide as well as with your own you will come out at the end of the course better off than you started with some new skills and excitement you can apply to your own research
