hey guys it's been the coin geek at old public Oien and today I have a video for you about scratches I've had a couple of people asked me about scratches on coins and so we're gonna take a closer look at some coins and you can tell me whether or not you think they're gonna have the scratch on the on the heading on the slab or not NGC in PCGS both have some comments about scratches and PCGS from the website says the scratch is if it's a visible scratch and the coin would be unacceptable to most collectors then they'll they'll mention the scratch it also can depend on the severity and on the quantity of scratches and so this is some good language to look at and also will help us to remember that grading is subjective and of course if you watch some of my videos you know that I believe it should be subjective and that's kind of the fun of it still to me is being able to look at different coins and come up with different opinions about things so anyway let's take a closer look at some of these coins okay so I have entirely too many coins to look at so we're gonna go ahead and grab some and take a look this 1898 Oh Morgan Silver Dollar we'll take a closer look here at some of the areas and you can tell me whether or not they're gonna call this scratches or not scratch as you can see in front of the chin a really strong line that heads downward and just kind of continues for quite some ways what is a scratch and what is not a scratch that is the opinion we're looking for here we've got this 1898 oh I did grab an annex coin for us here this is a 1904 1904 Oh Morgan dollar and the area that I want to look at is also of course this High Point right on the cheek there's some abrasions and then again in the open field and the open field in front of her that she especially get all this marks on the cheek what is an abrasion what does it contact mark what is a scratch got another Morgan Silver Dollar here 1887 also oh this one's the San Francisco it's a little bit better date in uncirculated grades a little bit better date and we're gonna go ahead and whoop know why don't we focusing your people ah it would be helpful if I actually used the loop you see the marks once again in front of the face then these marks I'm on the on the cheek by the way those type of marks do not affect the grade usually I'm going to tell you right now those marks are kind of embedded into the the coin here I have a little gold US gold half half dollar says cow on the back now gold is very soft so it's easy to get marks this I want you to notice there are some lines also kind of in front of the cheek it's it's harder to get the angle right on this with the with the loop but it has some marks in the field here which are pretty heavy that looked like scratches to me here's a 1925 piece dollar also now let's go ahead and like this one has a lot of stuff going on on the neck so you've got you see the deep mark on the bottom of the neck and then you see the deep mark where there's the scrape marks and I wanted to point those marks once again looking to see what's a scratch and what's not a scratch I don't cheat if you've seen any of my videos before some of these you're gonna see some going through that you've probably already seen this is a hunt Lucky three-legged buffalo look at that guy and so you'll see the mark on the chin here and so you see going down through the chin a little shaving mark if you will I got this cool George Washington piece which I find pretty pretty nice and you'll see you'll see a line going up and down in front of the chin apparently there's a common theme with chins you know I had no idea it was such a problem but some lines on that one and then I've got this Carson City half-dollar you'll see the grooves and they're pretty hard but yeah also something I want to point out those are very old there's those marks and they're just filled with dirt that happened a long time ago sometimes I find that they're a little more forgiving on coins that are older that have been around for a while so there's that and last but not least I've got this the oldest the eldest statesman here at the 1793 large send with some marks down by the sent the Ian sent you'll see you'll see the marks in there so while you guys review those because there's a lot of them you can I'm gonna go have a margarita all right I'm back ooh so this coin you've probably seen before if you've seen some of my videos with the big marks on the back we're just gonna work our way back through and reverse order scratches scratched you know I think it's pretty safe to say that's a that's a fair assessment I mean I would call that coin scratched the 72 CC obverse scratched this one also you know the coin it's interesting because the scratch is clearly there there's just something about that where you can just see how old it is that you wonder how much of a detriment it should be or should not be and then the three-legged Buffalo with a scratch X details this one is interesting because under the loop you can tell it there's a scratch there but I will say that I've had a lot of dealers look at this coin and have to search to find the scratch so I went up with the scratch on this one even though there is a longer work there all right George Washington oh yeah um detail scratch this one's a little frustrating because it in the video doesn't show as well but that scratch is not really detracting in person that it's really nice piece really a very nice piece this one had two marks in front of the face this one they did not call scratched I think I just stuttered kind like Mad Max Headroom is anyone remembered Mad Max Headroom just me alright this one had the big lines both both down here and then also again there's a deep line right there I want to point those out because this one's kind of fun because this was actually in a midstate 65 so the rest of the coin by the way is really gorgeous it has it has marks in there and I guess those marks are not scratches because they are I don't know not intentional I don't know what you want to call it the 87's is cacked and ms-64 you know the lines and the marks in front of this are clearly contact marks like you can even see the reading in something like that so the contact marks were definitely not going to be scratches and then we had the what we have next to annex corn missive is a this one was interesting because it really has heavy heavy scrape marks across the cheek bone you know but even then you know I want to call them scratch is either the rest of coins nice they took the scratches into account or the bag marks into account we called it a mint state 63 last but not least the 1898 oh and at 62 also heavy heavy lines you know heavy lines the front and on the cheek but nothing that they would call a scratch using a scratch maybe this thing here with caused some scratches so anyway there is a look at some coins with scratches without scratches did you agree with whether or not they call them scratched take a leave a comment down below on bend the coin geek thanks for watching you can subscribe by clicking on the button in the corner and watch more videos on the right side of the screen thanks so much
