all right well good afternoon everybody um we're gonna go ahead and get started with today's presentation just to make sure we give everyone plenty of time to ask any questions you may have after we go through the presentation itself but I wanted to say first congratulations to all of you joining us today who have been admitted we're really excited to welcome you to the GT computing family and we look forward to meeting here on campus as soon as possible for those of you who are prospective students still high school seen high school sophomores juniors maybe even first-year students in high school we hope today that we can give you a good overview of who we are and what we do as a college of computing so that hopefully you will be submitting your application to us shortly as well so my name is jennifer Whitlow I'm the director of computing enrollment and alumni engagement here at Georgia Tech and I'm also a Georgia Tech alumna I probably graduated Georgia Tech before most of you entered kindergarten but I have a very deep passion for Georgia Tech and what we do especially in the College of Computing so I'm really excited to have the opportunity to talk with all of you today and share a little bit about who we are and why I think Georgia Tech is such a special place the College of Computing came into existence in 1990 we were actually the second standalone competing program in the nation we were the first at a public institution and the second in the nation were also the second largest programming computer program in a computer ya computing program in the nation and the first largest program at a public university as well so our stats kind of matched when we were created we currently have over 115 faculty members these range from our lecturers to our research scientists and tenure-track faculty who are doing world-renowned research across a variety of Heating disciplines and throughout your three to five years at Georgia Tech pursuing an undergraduate computing degree you'll have the opportunity to learn from many of these faculty members as well as potentially do research with some of them we do offer one of the broadest programs in the nation many universities tend to focus on a few specializations are areas within the field and just really try to do those areas well Georgia Tech has taken a slightly different approach through our threads curriculum and this allows us to give one of the best education that's in computing but also one of the broadest education in the field of computing you can see that when we were created we still had this focus of really just making sure that computing was at the core of everything and I don't mean at the core as far as like being the only thing people do or the only way people can do things but just being a significant part and playing a significant role in society so in 1991 when they were creating our strategic plan this is what our founding leadership came up with in a world where computer science is very closely blended with a variety of other disciplines in the context of challenging strategic applications our research activity must push forward the frontiers of basic computer science and selective computing areas in which computer science is a key but not exclusive component our real specialty however will be in knowing how to effectively mix computer science in other areas and I think as we go along in today's presentation you'll see how well we've been able to incorporate computing into so much of what we do at Georgia Tech so let's talk a little bit about some of our facts and rankings so these are some statistics that we're very proud of here in the College of Computing and I think give you a good idea of why we are such a highly sought after program so when it comes to our enrollment numbers we do have just shy of 3,000 students shared across our two undergraduate degrees here in the College of competing we also have over 10,000 students studying at our master's program most of those students are in our online program but quite a few are also studying on campus and then we have just shy of 400 doctoral students who are doing research and working towards their PhDs and various stilts within computing when it comes to where our grads are going post Georgia Tech we have some stats that we think are you know prove why Georgia Tech is one of the best returns on your best investment the first of these is our average starting salary or median starting salary for our 2018-2019 year our average salary for undergraduate students who are starting their first entry-level position was right at around 99 thousand dollars a year now that does you know vary based off of geographic location and cost of living but making ninety nine thousand dollars at age twenty one twenty two twenty three that's not a bad way to go we also had the highest job placement rate of any major on the Georgia Tech campus our current job placement rate is right at about ninety eight percent so those are students you actively are looking for jobs and have received at least one or more offers prior to graduation when it comes to our rankings according to u.s. News & World Report we're currently ranked the eighth u.s. eighth eighth best u.s. graduate program and we're also rate sixteenth best in global universities for computer science The Wall Street Journal's and Times Higher Education ranks us currently at seventh in the world for computer science and that's one that we're extremely proud of because that does focus on different credentials than some of what the US News and World Report looks at the Wall Street Journal times higher education rankings look a lot at where grads are undergraduate students are going upon graduation how many companies are hiring from our institutions starting salaries and then student feedback so this 7th in the world ranking tends to focus a little bit more on where we are at the undergrad level and then some of those other rankings that focus a little bit more on the graduate level and then again we're first for me and starting salary offers for all Georgia Tech undergraduate majors now most of you are here because you're interested in one of our two undergraduate degrees so we're going to talk a little bit about our computer science and our computational media programs so for our computer science program and our CM program we use a curriculum called the threads curriculum this curriculum gives students a chance to really kind of take ownership of your degree plan and the courses that you're going to take throughout your time at Georgia Tech well making sure that you're still building that foundational core in computing principles so for both programs each student will choose a minimum of two threads to create their degree now you can choose more than two threads if your heart desires but most of our students stick to the traditional two thread combination for our computer science program there are eight different threads that a student can choose - from eight choose - gives us 28 individual degree plans that our students can follow in order to earn a Bachelor of Science in computer science so let's talk a little bit about what each of these means so theory is the thread that really kind of makes computer science of science and not just an application based area of study so it really begins to dive down into the mathematical side of computing focusing a lot on algorithms you can see here on this slide some of the topics that are covered throughout the theory thread you have everything from information theory and cryptography to machine learning data structures algorithms quantum computing and a lot more with the intelligence thread students are looking and at and exploring how do we mimic human intelligence in our machines so this is everything with understanding how humans and animals process information and perceive information so that we can recreate that in some form so this thread obviously aligned aligns very nicely with machine learning artificial intelligence cognitive science so how do you take a machine and make it smart for our information in our networks threat we're looking at how do we move information quickly securely and accurately so this is everything from databases to networking to information security cyber security so how are we taking our data and transmitting it but also how are we protecting it and storing it our next threat of systems in architecture systems and architecture looks at that core foundation of competing so this is where we begin to get down into kind of where software it meets hardware for students who are interested in operating systems and languages if you maybe are unsure if you want to do computer science or Computer Engineering because you're not sure if you are more interested in the hardware or the software side this might be a really good thread pic for you then we have our people thread our people thread is probably one of our most popular for many reasons but it looks at how do we as humans interact with computing so this is everything from a user interface design and usability design to how can we use computing to help people so getting into things like computing education competing and healthcare all of that kind of stuff our next thread is our media thread and there's a little bit of confusion because we do have a thread called media in our computer science program but then we have an entire degree called computational media our media thread on the computer science side of the house looks at how do we use media or how do we use computing to really express ourselves so this is everything from animation to manipulating images and sound if you think about the difference in the media thread in the computational media degree the media thread is really looking at the software and the algorithms and the application side of media or behind media whereas the computational media degree is looking more at how do we create media and what is the design side of media our last or next to last thread is modeling and simulation modeling and simulation looks at how do we recreate the real world in a virtual world so this is everything from we're computing meets living sciences like biology and chemistry and physics it can also be applied in areas like art and math and engineering and various engineering disciplines so with modeling and simulation we're looking at are there things that we can do digitally go in and manipulate various variables to come up with a solution before actually implementing it in the real world so relative to today we have the Center for Disease Control here in Atlanta or the CDC and they are constantly along with other medical fields running simulations and models to track how quickly various diseases may transmit and viruses may transmit from carrier to carrier and where we can implement preventative measures so this is a thread that's very applicable to every industry from healthcare to construction to art and so on our devices thread is our last threat and this is where we look at how do we embed computers into physical devices so this includes everything from robotics to smart homes to use the Internet of Things so it begins to toe the line with electrical engineering and there's a lot of Electrical and Computer Engineering classes that are a part of the devices threat because you're looking at what are some of the restrictions of putting a computer into something if you're talking about it being a device that someone can wear like a SmartWatch or some other form of smart jewelry there's obviously different restrictions that you're gonna have to follow versus you know a phone or a tablet or something like that because of size and weight and all of these kinds of things so one neat thing about all of our threats is that they're all designed to give you courses outside of computing without taking away from the computing curriculum but that gives you a really holistic approach to that area so our devices threat it involves Electrical and Computer Engineering modeling and simulation includes courses from math and the sciences people in court people and intelligence both include competing courses along with psychology courses our theory thread includes courses from mathematics so on and so forth so no matter what thread combination you choose you're going to get this very holistic approach to various areas within the field of computing and you're going to also be building a very strong foundation in those core computing principles and then applying them to the areas that you're most interested in for a computational media program it is a little bit different you can still choose two threads to create their degree however the computational media program is the first program at Georgia Tech to be shared across multiple colleges so for this program you'll choose one thread from the College of Computing and then you'll choose a second thread either through the school of literature media and communications in our Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts or you'll choose a thread through the School of Music located in our College of Design on the computing side of the house students can currently choose between people media and intelligence these are the same people median intelligence stories we just spoke about and then for your second thread for our LMC horses or LMC threads the first option is that of interaction design and experimental media this thread is going to look at forms of media there that require the users interaction to truly get the full experience it also looks at new forms of media so this is where you'll find a lot of things like I'm gonna date myself a little bit here but when the connect first came out and this was the first time or the week these were the first times that you know to play a game you had to truly interact with the system that you were using and it changed the way that we played video games the same goes for things like Pokemon go it requires the user to get up and get active in order to really get the full experience the next thread through LMC is film and Media Studies this is probably one of the broader LMC threads and also focuses on some of the more traditional areas of media a lot of our students in this thread do choose to go the soman animation route because that is kind of one of the more popular areas in general Media Studies and so this is where you'll take courses in video production understanding the history of film and also understanding basics of animation now Georgia Tech doesn't have a full film department on campus we do offer many film courses on our campus but we don't have an actual film department so for students who are interested in this bed we do allow them to choose to take additional film courses outside of Georgia Tech through Savannah College of Art and Design or on the Georgia State campus both of which do have full film programs so it gives you a chance if you do want to dive deeper on the film side than what we provide you have that option the third thread through LMC is our game studies thread and the game studies thread is unique because it doesn't just focus on game design but it also looks at augmented reality virtual reality as well as how do we use games for purposes other than educators in entertainment so there's a whole new field of gaming for training and education where people are beginning to gamify the learning process and so our game study students are also looking at how can you take teaching and learning for various age groups and gamify it so that one they're learning at a deeper level but two it's more of a fun process than just sitting through a webinar or going through a training session and then the last threat option for our CM students is the new music technology thread offered through the School of Music now students who are interested in this thread do you have to submit an additional portfolio and application to be selected into this thread but it does give you a really good opportunity to look at how do we use computing with meet music so this could be everything from creating new music devices to how do we teach music we've had some research happening at Georgia Tech on haptic learning and there was a glove that was actually designed and developed by some of our recent grad ate students that would vibrate on your fingers to help teach you how to play the piano so it would vibrate in different patterns to help you learn the different chords and note on a piano which keys to press so no matter which major you choose computer science or computational media you can choose two threads from a wide variety of combinations of threads and students aren't required to choose their threads until you're the beginning of your second year this gives you plenty of time in that first year to come on campus begin building your core in computing foundations while exploring the different threads the types of classes that you would take within each and then how those threads may align best with your goals beyond Georgia Tech so which threats may give you the skillsets and the knowledge and the background that best support you going into a given role or industry and so you've got plenty of time to explore those additionally threads are non-binding so you have plenty of flexibility within the threads that if you choose one and decide you don't really like that thread you can change I've had students change their threads almost all the way up until graduation now it could affect when you graduate depending on how many core requirements for that thread are different from the one you previously had selected but there is that flexibility additionally all of our threads include free elective hours where students can choose to add a minor or a certificate in another area of camp on campus to give you an even broader perspective what can you do beyond just academics at Georgia Tech to me being an alumna some of these things that you can do outside of the classroom are just as important as what you're learning in the classroom and the first of these is our internship and co-op opportunities now Georgia Tech internships and coops may work a little different from some of the other universities that you're looking at for us both internships and coops are paid what differs between the two is the time commitment with a single company so our internship program is a little bit more flexible than our co-op program because it's a single semester commitment to a company and you can do a full-time internship or a part-time internship during that semester for our coops it's a three semester commitment to a company and it is a rotational program so you're rotating your semesters between full working full-time with the company as well as taking courses full time in the other semesters so internships are great for students you really don't have an idea of what type of company they want to look for or go work for when they graduate it's also a great opportunity for students who aren't sure maybe geographically where they want to live after they graduate from Georgia Tech so a lot of our students who do internships even if they end up doing a repeated internship with the same company they may use that flexibility to change their location so let's say you fell in love with your summer internship at Google and you really want to keep working for Google but you don't want to stay in San Francisco or the Bay Area so you can use that flexibility of the internship to move on to their office in New York or Seattle or Austin or Atlanta and get different experiences while still staying at the same company co-ops on the other hand are a great option for those students who are going into really specialized areas within computing so if you're going into an area that maybe there aren't a lot of companies that are doing work in that field a co-op gives you the chance to really get long-term experience with a company so by the time you complete your full cooperation most students have done anywhere from a year and a half to two and a half years of full-time work with the company or an organization so coops are great for students again going in those very specialized fields it's also good for students who are looking at possibly cybersecurity or different roles that may require security clearance sometimes the companies that are going to provide you a security clearance are gonna want you to stay for a little bit longer than one semester or about fourteen weeks now how do you learn more about your opportunities to get internships and co-ops we have quite a few ways that students can go about this the most popular tour through our career fairs in our days in the lobby this gives you a chance to meet with representatives from companies face to face and really learn more about who the company is and what opportunities they have for students whether it's internships coops full time etc so every year we have two career fairs that are specific to the college competing we have our largest fare in the fall and that's due to just kind of the hiring cycle for computing internships and co-ops and so we have well over 200 companies that participate in our fall career fair we also have a career fair in spring it happens in early January or mid-january and that career fair does tend to be a little bit smaller just because a lot of companies are already well into the interview process for their internships or have possibly even filled all their internship positions but there's still a lot of opportunities available at that spring career fair because of the number of students we have in the College of competing and because of our popularity with companies wanting to hire our students we've actually had to move both of our career fairs off campus as of this past spring our career fairs are now held in mercedes-benz stadium which is the football stadium for the Atlanta Falcons and also where Atlanta United are our major league soccer team here in Atlanta play so just to give you some scope we are very popular with companies and they really want to hire Georgia Tech students another option if you aren't looking for kind of that career for your experience and you want a chance to build a little bit of a deeper relationship with a company is our day in the lobby during our day in the lobby we do have one organization or one company on campus at a time or in the College of Computing at a time and these are our corporate partners so they come and they are on campus from about 10:00 a.m. until about 8:00 p.m. that evening throughout the day they are set up in our lobby kind of career fair style with a table and various representatives and they're there to talk about to talk to students about different opportunities within the company so you're a little bit more about who they are their culture and then in the evenings they do more detailed Tech Talks so it could be a talk where they focus on a new that they're using in their organization it could be a Q&A session with current and former interns in full-time new hires it could be a mini hackathon where they're opening up API so that their company uses for you to go in and play with and begin thinking of how you may use that technology so Dave a lobby is a really great way especially for companies that you really know you want to go work for to get that more in-depth time with them to learn about their company now who are the companies coming to campus we have over 60 corporate partners and these are again those companies that are coming and participating in things like day in the lobby in addition to our career fair we also have companies outside of our corporate affiliate partner program that do come to our career fair and post jobs on our job board and you can see that the companies range from everything from big tech to startups to Fortune 500 companies and everything in between we have national research labs we have banking institute financial institutions transportation companies like Norfolk Southern and UPS we have companies that focus on government partnerships and contracts we have of course big text of Microsoft and Google and Facebook and IBM and things like that so there's something for everyone and there's a lot of flexibility in the types of companies that students can go work for through their time here at Georgia Tech now internships and coops are great first several reasons one a lot of times they can help you figure out what you don't want to do when you graduate sometimes they help you figure out exactly what you do want to do when you graduate they also serve as a great way to help offset some of the cost of attending Georgia Tech for those of you who may be out-of-state and don't qualify for as much financial aid our students are earning really good salaries during their internships and fill up so it does give them flexibility financially to have kind of offset some of those costs associated with attending Georgia Tech now outside of internships and co-ops there are a lot of other opportunities that you can use to enhance your degree the first of these is our create X program and entrepreneurship here at Georgia Tech create X is a very unique program because unlike a lot of the Entrepreneurship programs at other universities students who go through this program have full ownership of the companies and the products that they create but you're also getting a really in-depth experience and you're being provided with financial resources as well as mentorship from various investors and successful entrepreneurs in the Atlanta area and that have connections to Georgia Tech so create X is an option for our students to do in place of their junior design capstone you can also do it just for fun and take courses towards free electives but there is a three course series of classes through create X the first class focuses on helping students to understand what entrepreneurship is all about so in that course you're learning more about kind of the different forms of funding you're getting to learn a lot about how do you file for patents and file your licensing for your company and things like that so just really beginning to understand what entrepreneurship really means and some of those key terms and things that you need to know if you're going to start your own company the second course in the program does require students to apply for and students will submit an idea that they have for a company or a product that they want to create and during that second course students actually working groups to do some customer discovery and to begin kind of understanding if their product or idea is a viable product and then in the third course create X launch students actually get to do it internship essentially for themselves where you're launching your company and you receive funding to help you get started you also receive $30,000 in services like patent legal advice getting help filing your patents and your licensing for your company and all of that kind of stuff and at the end of the summer of the launch program students actually will do a showcase or an expo where they pitch their companies to local angel investors and to entrepreneurs from the Atlanta area and it's a great way to really kind of build that company along the way as you go at Georgia Tech while working on your degree and Georgia Tech has launched through the create X program over 150 companies with more than a three hundred and ten million dollar evaluation of those companies so there have been some really great successful companies coming out of this program so for those of you who are interested in entrepreneurship and startups this is something that I highly encourage students to look into now if industry and entrepreneurship is not really your thing and you're leaning more towards research and design or pursuing a PhD in computing then looking at undergraduate research is a great thing to do for you even if you don't want to pursue a graduate degree research is a really great way to kind of be on the forefront of some of the up-and-coming technologies students at Georgia Tech can start doing undergraduate research as early as your first semester on campus and research can be done for credit or for pay there's also an undergraduate thesis option for those students who don't want to do the junior design capstone so if you know you want to go on to pursue a PhD doing that undergrad thesis is a great opportunity and you can see here some of the areas that we doing research in at Georgia Tech and through the College of Computing of course you know within each of these larger areas there are tons of sub research areas that you can get involved in and our students who are participating in undergrad research are getting a chance to also get published and to present at conferences with their faculty members and grad students that they're working with so it's a really again great way to get kind of on the forefront of some of the cutting-edge technology that you can't necessarily get involved with at the industry level outside of the kind of academic and career side our student organizations and this is something that I highly recommend all students do is find some way to get involved on campus whether that's through one of these student organizations they're housed in the College of Computing or one of them more than 400 student organizations across the Georgia Tech campus I really encourage students to just find your people get involved and begin building your network do the student organizations in the College of competing we have everything from our various professional organizations like the Association for Computing Machinery or ACM we also have a chapter of I Triple E at Georgia Tech we have epsilon PI epsilon which is the national computing Honor Society so there's these ways to get involved in kind of personal and professional development organizations but then we also have student organizations that focus on various areas of Industry so we have our programming team and our Robo jackets our robotics teams they compete in national international competitions we have Big O which is our theory clubs so they also participate in competitions that they in their meanings start looking at things that maybe you can't learn in the classroom or technologies that are being used or software's that are being used in industry to help in kind of the areas associated with their theory so algorithms and dating analytic and that kind of thing so you can see we have a wide variety of organizations that students can get in to depending on your interest areas they're a great way to network with other students who share those common interests with you but also to get a chance to meet alumni and corporations and company representatives that do a lot of work in these different areas so definitely encourage students to find your people that you have commonalities with and begin building that building that network and lastly is our international programs now this is something I did not do as a student at Georgia Tech and it is probably my biggest regret to this day and that is you know making sure you take that chance to study outside of Georgia Tech's Atlanta campus so we have two different forms of study abroad programs we have our faculty lead programs and those are located in Lorraine Frant our met France at the Georgia Tech Lorraine campus we also have a program in Barcelona Spain and another program in Berlin Germany with our faculty lead programs you are traveling with Georgia Tech students and Georgia Tech faculty taking the same courses you would take in Atlanta taught by the same faculty members you're just borrowing dorm space and classroom space from another institution in another country so you're getting the chance to you push forward in your degree requirements and taking the courses that you need to take but at the same time you're getting a chance to really explore another culture and country while doing so if you're looking for something a little more immersive we do have our exchange programs exchange programs or where you travel with very small groups of Georgia Tech students and you take courses taught by the faculty at partnering universities so our main exchange programs that we have in the College of Computing are at ITU Copenhagen and Copenhagen Denmark and our program and now most Sweden so these are both geared towards SIEM students in media thread students but anyone can do exchange programs or different study abroad programs you outside your discipline or your thread picks we have a stud nt that works in our office that did the Pacific program at Georgia Tech there are no computer science courses offered on that program but she chose that program because it gave her the opportunity to spend 16 weeks in Fiji Australia and New Zealand and the courses that she took on the program did meet degree requirements they just weren't major specific requirements so she got some of her humanities out of the way she got a science course out of the way and then she was a leadership minor so she was also able to take one of her leadership minor courses on that program so there's a lot of ways for you as a student to again work towards those degree requirements that you may have whether they're major specific or more of your core courses while also getting a really unique experience outside of the Atlanta area for those of you who may be out-of-state students international study opportunities are a great way again to help kind of offset those financial cost of attending Georgia Tech all students who are studying abroad in a given semester or paying in-state tuition so even if you're an international student or an out-of-state student you are paying your tuition at the in-state rate so it's a great way again to get a really unique experience work towards your degree requirements but also help offset some of those financial cost and even if you're an in-state student I recommend it because when else in your life can you pack up and move to another country for 10 to 16 weeks with no strings attached didn't really just have a great experience so definitely encourage students to look into international programs we hope that you enjoy today's session and we look forward to hopefully meeting many of you on campus this fall you all have a great rest of your day
