It’s interesting, though, that in his title page Hatzfeld claimed that the book had been approved by the prominent philosopher and Leibnizian partisan Christian Wolff, something that Wolff was later at pains to deny.Even though one might expect a book burned by the comparatively liberal authorities of the Dutch Republic in the mid 18th century to be hot stuff, this is actually an extremely inane and boring book, which I never quite got around to finishing. Its tedium is enlivened only by Hatzfeld’s wild invective against Newton (a “divine Beast”, whose entire thinking is “worth nothing”), Euler (an “arch-knave”), and others who failed to accept Hatzfeld as the greatest natural philosopher of all time. In the case of the Earth, the clouds will show the contrary, because if the Earth’s attraction signNowed up to their height it would cause the Earth to be flooded, as it has sometimes been by those clouds that have come close enough to the surface of the Earth to touch it. So why should I buy the smaller 5 cent-Hershey’s bar. Let me buy Mars”. And this is exactly what the then American consumer/customer thought! And guess who became the market leader after this move? Of course, Mars!Hershey’s Company was beaten at their own game. They grew more and more uncomfortable with each passing day. So what genius plan did they come up with? They introduced a much larger Hershey’s bar at a higher cost to compete with Mars. Except that the genius plan backfired. You will ask how. Do you remember when I told you that the 5 cent-Hershey’s bar had become synonymous with the American Dream? Well, our loyal customer now felt uneasy that his 5 cents dream was more than 100% expensive. So what happens then? Hershey’s share in the chocolate market fell! More!Those days our Willy Wonka hero was squirming in his chair in Pennsylvania seeing the dipping figures. So who saves our hero now? To be very precise-an alien! Literally! I am not joking. Okay, let me clarify a little. The movie producer Steven Spielberg went to Mars(the then market leader of chocolates) asking them to advertise their brand in their upcoming movie- E.T. where E.T. who was a sugar lover would be shown gorging on their chocolates. Mars told Steven that their chocolate was for human kids and this would have a negative impact on their sales. So poor E.T. was deprived of Mars. But Steven being a diligent producer approached Hershey’s next. And lo and behold Hershey’s decided to introduce their famous Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups in the movie by making E.T. eat them. This had two results- E.T. got his chocolates and Hershey’s became the market leader again with children running helter-skelter to grab the Butter Cup that their favorite alien was eating. So our Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory started churning happily again with a smile on Willy’s face.I wish I could wrap up the story saying that everybody lived happily ever after but unfortunately our story is one influenced by the consumer’s choices and preferences and continues on till date, with our two heroes-Mars and Hershey’s- trying to grab the greater market share. Well, what’s it to us, we get to eat better chocolates everyday. Don’t we?So back to our answer, why was this story a great example of marketing?If you are familiar with marketing you can see this story -spanning over decades- contains all things good and bad about marketing.What Hershey’s had done with its 5 cents bar was fixing the price point and meeting consumer needs with a tactical business plan.What Forrest Mars did at Hershey’s was essentially learning their business model/ marketing moves and building his own.What Forrest Mars did by introducing ingredients other than cocoa was a successful market research into consumer preferences.What Hershey’s did with increasing their bar size was not reading into the consumer’s mind (or rather a lack of understanding consumer needs)What Hershey’s did with the introduction of Butter Cups in E.T. was appropriate brand positioning.This as per me is a brilliant example of great marketing. Great marketing involves catering to the ever evolving consumer needs. These companies individually might have made wrong market moves from time to time but each time one of them lost their market shares was because the other one had a brilliant marketing move/tool up his sleeve.So here’s E.T. biding you adieu.I hope you enjoyed my story as much as I did narrating it
