a lawsuit the plaintiff is the party initiating this action and the defendant is the party against whom the action is initiated the case number is a unique number used to identify your case case numbers are assigned in sequential order in the court it is filed in this will be provided to you when you file your case a case number may also be referred to as a reference number or ucn number
