you recently elaborated and a reply to me on facebook on while on why carl gustaf training is conducted the way that it is in the army citing a number of health concerns this struck quite a nerve with me causing me to question the institutional knowledge of my organization and the army writ large regarding it do you have any more information that you could elaborate on regarding this and/or sources that are available to expose my organization that could facilitate a reevaluation of I'm assuming your training methodology and I'm assuming that your gripe with the training methodology is that you think they're making you fire the bazooka too many times in a day and might be hurting you in the long term my follow-up question is are there any other occupational health hazards that one should be aware of as an individual to minimize exposure to something like Carl Gustav recoil I'm especially interested in if there are things that I would have done differently regarding looking at my career back in hindsight I just want to say thank you for sharing your difficulties and taking talking to protectors and helping out protectors people public servants on practically tactical okay so yes there's a lot of stuff that I would have done differently first off when I came in you didn't want to be known as a malingerer and you did not want to get that reputation that you were a sick call writer that you were missing duty and missing training and that's the problem with the military is that they have all this stuff they're supposed to do and a limited training calendar and all of it is important except for the stuff that really isn't and so your chain of command really has valid concerns about dude if you do not go to the whatever training this week you are not going to see that training for another year or at least another six months or whatever and if it's something like firing your grenade launcher and your job is Grenadier that's a big deal being sick or injured and having to miss the one day that you can fire your grenade launcher in a six month period that's a huge deal so we institutionally have because there are so many people that that fake it we looked we looked down upon people that got hurt we looked down at people on people that were missing training and so as a result of that people would hide injury or at a minimum just try to minimize and like try to just get get some medicine go see doc go back to work whatever the biggest one is on orthopedic injuries you would have people that would start peeing again before they were fully healed and there's just no way around that you have to you have to work through injury if you're gonna be successful in in the military but you've got to understand what the second third order effects of then are so you've got to listen to your body and if you're sore or if you're hurt hurting or whatever that doesn't mean that you can't still perform you need to you need to know when when you are pushing yourself to re injury and when you're not when you're getting back after things too soon and when that is just your body pushing back because it hasn't had to do that type of physical training and you've been babying this joint or whatever so the muscles around that support that joint have atrophied and so when you start using that joint again it hurts that isn't a real injury of your whatever you had going on that's the muscles that are responsible for that joint going oh man you haven't worked us out in months why you got to do that to me Ali and so you just got to know your body you got to know your body and you got to take care of your body but the thing that I did not do was I did not we call this in Special Forces they call it team room medicine because you've got 218 deltas in your team and they can they can prescribe drugs they're doing it on the group surgeon or battalion surgeons medical license but they can go right into their aid bag pull out drugs and just start handing them to you and if they give you motrin and they give you this and they give you that you twist your ankle and whatever and you go back into the fight if they don't follow that with the DEA form whatever the heck it is that is your log of medical stuff that anybody that goes into a hospital or anything like that or goes to a TMC for sick call that that's going to get documented and then it goes into your med records by skipping that part you have just missed the documentation that shows the mechanism of injury that is going to haunt you later in life when you're in your 40s or 50s and that is why people don't get crap for their VA ratings because they did not document when the military actually hurt them every time you get injured even if you're back to duty every single time you're injured you need to ensure that the medic that treated you your battalion aid station somebody takes the time to document what they did and then go to wherever your medical records are kept normally the true medical center for your that supports your unit pull your medical records and slide them shits in there I wanted the thinnest medical records that I can have because I had had dreams of going to these amazing places and serving in these amazing organizations and I was absolutely terrified that my hearing was gonna keep me out of Special Forces if you had hearing loss is over 40 percent or 40 DB whatever the number 40 and the average average people when you first come in the Army you're like 0:05 maybe at 10 and and so 40 is pretty bad that was that was like a threshold cutoff for Special Forces assessment selection they you could not pass a Swick Special Warfare Center Swick and school you could not pass a swift physical with severe hearing loss like that or if you had had PRK eye surgery or LASIK eye surgery excuse me if you'd had LASIK eye surgery you could not pass a Special Forces physical so guys that were new there they were gonna be career of pipe pipe hitters right these dudes were looking at the long game about okay I'm in this unit now in this many years I'm gonna go to selection and then I'm gonna do this and then I'm gonna do that and they're planning just like a guy standing on a flight line of day one obsessed in the school and he wants to be an astronaut he's got a plan of how he's gonna get there and he's gonna have to take some physicals to get there so he's looking at how much does he disclose versus how much does he hold back etc etc cuz he wants to become an astronaut and so if there was one thing that I could do different it's that I would realize that stuff happens people get hurt these doctors that are looking at your flight physicals your Special Warfare physicals your whatever selection physicals like those guys are regular dudes and everything is waiverable the black and white stuff that the recruiters tell you about you need to be able to do this this this this this whatever but that is very very broad brush stroke stuff at the end of the day there's a doctor that's going to look at you for you and they're gonna look at your medical record they're gonna make a determination about whether or not you should be wet whether you have an injury or something that is gonna prevent you from being a good Green Beret well if you're good Army Ranger probably gonna be a good Green Beret physically so that would be the biggest thing that I would change is I would not have hidden injury and I would have made my medical department do their job and document my injuries I was very lucky that I was able to get a lot of that stuff documented later on because I started seeking treatment for me for it while I was still in there I got blown up in Iraq and didn't even go see anybody so there was nothing in my medical records that I had ever gotten blown up that I had ever you know whatever and when I started really crashing on my hearing tests I started talking my optometrist about it yeah I was blown up in 2006 and and she like why are is your hearing tests so much worse than it was the last time dentists like well I just I just deployed eight months ago and and I was I was knocked unconscious the IUD detonation or whatever and and then they asked you know where you were in here in protection yeah I was wearing peltor said you know 26 DB noise reduction or whatever but you know when you ride over you know three or four 152 proto rounds in your truck and you've got an open hole in the top that a dude is standing out of that overpressure kind of gets in there anyway so I was able to for starting up almost like eight years before I got out that's when I really started man I hurt man I'm jacked up man this is bad and I started going and seeing doctors and having them write down and having them document the conversation we had where I was making allegations going back years and years and years and years and I said the same thing enough times that when I said whatever to the VA they opened up the document and they couldn't go all the way back to the date of the mechanism of injury but they could say okay this guy isn't just saying it now he's retiring he said at seven years ago seven years ago he was complaining about this ailment so I had to play a lot of catch-up on the rear end on the front end document document document document everything Carl Gustav overpressure you know they're physiologically there's people doctors whoever they know how much blast overpressure the human body is supposed to be able to take and the studies about the concussive effects of blast overpressure are still ongoing but they're getting better and you know the indicator that we were getting too much blast overpressure from training with our bazookas was dudes losing hear hearing I mean if you've got guys that are at 40 s after 18 months of being in the 80 section even though you know they never once not once fired that bazooka without yellow foam ease in at a minimum there's some stuff going on there and the Army is acknowledging you now they got army Times articles about the Carl Gustav and the eighty Force and stuff and the the negative effects of those so once you understand and maybe you've got to get your engineers or your EOD in there to brief your chain of command if they want you to do a live-fire and they're telling you you know you need to fire the Carl Gustav from the pro okay do you understand how blast wave propagation works do you understand about refractive overpressure and the fact that I could actually double spike my overpressure because I've got the overpressure coming direct at my head from the venturi or acid of the bazooka and I've got the ricochet of that exact same overpressure that was omnidirectional hitting the ground bouncing and then coming back at me again so I've got the direct wave and then the indirect wave hitting me in the head and the further away I get from the ground the more inches that that refractive wave has to disperse open air before it hits my body so maybe I maybe I for the sake of training value since nobody's actually out here trying to put a bullet in my ass you give me a [ __ ] break and let me shoot that bazooka Forman ears how about we do that somebody has to have enough balls to have that conversation and there's a lot of people that think they're smarter than they actually are or maybe they're highly intelligent and always think they're the smartest person in the room you have to give them the data points for them to come to that conclusion because of the smart I think they're the smartest guy in the room they're also the smartest guy in the room trying to cover their ass and save their career so as soon as you make it real that they knew that this was unhealthy and that they could be potentially putting their soldiers lives and risk they are gonna full-stop do whatever they have to cover their ass because they want to get promoted because the smartest guy in the room that's what they do [ __ ] good idea fairies so other operational hazards lead but let lead gets really I don't wanna say overblown but lead is you know I've got lead all over me I would not throw in a dip right now if I still dipped without washing my hands I would wash my hands with cold water I would use some type of deal ed I would not eat a sandwich out on the range or any type of first strike or MRE anything that I would have to put my bare hands on I would not do that solvent tank I would wear nitrile gloves and try to keep that solvent because a lot of it is a stone based keep it from absorbing through my skin when I was a private man we were roll up our sleeves bearskin in the safety clean machine just getting after it scrubbed machine gun parts so we just didn't understand about that the toxins that were in the environment if you go someplace that does tough realistic training an urban environment a la you go blow up [ __ ] in a city you should always have somebody do an environmental impact study on the structures that you're going to go train in pull pull building plans look at them absolutely do not do demo training any building that has asbestos because the blast overpressure is what kicks up that particulate matter that you then aspirate asbestos on the ground asbestos around a pipe is fine but the if you mess with that pipe all the powder and everything that comes off of it is now aspirated and it goes all the way down in your a vo lie and I personally think it's probably the reason why I have COPD right now is exposure to asbestos I hope that does not roll into some mesothelioma and/or lung cancer later on in my life we'll see cancer does not really run on my family but you know my family is probably not snorting lines of asbestos either so you know we'll see
