What are some lesser known Gmail tips?
Perhaps not "lesser known", but I've been using keyboard shortcuts for years under "Settings": This probably comes from my vim background, but inside gmail, I almost never use the mouse. Instead:While viewing a list of threads (i.e. Inbox, All Mail, Drafts, search results, etc.):c to compose a new mailj and k to move the cursor down and upx to select/deselect the current thread that's pointed to by the cursore to archive all threads that have been selected [Enter] to go into the thread pointed to by the cursor"g i" to go to my Inbox"g a" to go to All Mail"g d" to go to DraftsWhile inside a thread:n and p to browse down and up messages inside a thread (move the cursor up and down)a to reply all (or r to reply individually, but that's rare) to the message currently pointed to by the cursorf to forward the message that's pointed to by the cursoru to go back to the previous thread list view, which could be your Inbox, All Mail, Drafts, etc. This is the same as the back button: s to toggle through the stars on the message currently pointed to by the cursorIn case you're wondering, the "cursor" is the very thin vertical blue line visible to the left of the third thread in this picture:Other useful shortcuts:/ to make the search bar active"* u" to select all unread emails"* n" to deselect all emailsShift+i to mark all selected emails as readShift+u to mark all selected emails as unreadWhile inside a thread, Shift+u will bring you back to the previous thread list view and marking the current thread as unread. I do this a lot to keep important threads at the top of my inbox. And that's basically all I ever do in gmail. It can be painful to learn at first, but just start with the very basics: j, k, and [Enter] to browse through your inbox. Within a month or two, you'll be zipping through your inbox like Usain Bolt through the 200m.Full list: http://support.google.com/mail/b...Edit: David Craige mentioned a very useful Google Labs add-on under "Settings --> Labs": a [Send & Archive] buttonAnd another useful add-on:

How easy is it to turn nouns into verbs (or otherwise change a word's part of speech) in the languages you speak?
I speak two languages: English and Japanese. The word that describes turning nouns into verbs in English is declension. The easiest way to declense a noun in English is to add “to” to the beginning of it. For example, party → to party. Then, you just treat it as a regular verb with standard conjugation.Party: to party, partied, parties, will party, has partied, etc..Knife (meaning “to stab with a knife”): to knife, knifed, knifes, will knife, etc..Declension is a pretty rudimentary skill in English—anyone can do it, I believe. However, Japanese is much more fascinating. In Japanese, there is an entire verb class dedicated to declension called group III verbs, or する (suru) verbs. する (suru) is the Japanese verb for “to do” in English. In Japanese, there is a class of nouns called “action” nouns, or -する (-suru) nouns. To declense a -する (-suru) noun, all you have to do is add する (suru) to it. From there, you can conjugate it to whatever tense/form you need.Examples:勉強 (べんきょう, benkyou): Study/studies (as in, scholarly study, Japanese studies, etc.)勉強する (benkyou suru): To study or I/you/he/she/etc. studies (informal)勉強します (benkyou shimasu): To study or I/you/he/she/etc. studies (formal)勉強しない/しません (benkyou shinai/shimasen): I/you/he/she/etc. doesn’t study (informal/formal)勉強できる/できます (benkyou dekiru/dekimasu): Can study (informal/formal)And so on.If you have a noun in Japanese and you want to make it into a verb, there’s a really high chance that all you have to do is add a conjugation of -する onto it and you’ll have the verb you need.Furthermore, there are many nouns to which there are related verbs.Examples:諦め (akirame): resignation/quitting; 諦める (akirameru): to resign/quit光 (hikari): light; 光る (hikaru): to shine/glow笑い (warai): laughter; 笑う (warau): to laugh数 (kazu): a number; 数える (kazoeru): to count答 (kotae): an answer; 答える (kotaeru): to answer痛み (itami): pain; 痛む (itamu): to ache, to feel painAnd so on.All in all, I find Japanese declension really interesting, and once I started learning the language, this one rule expanded my Japanese reservoir of verbs to easily twice or three times its size. To anyone learning Japanese, this will be one of the most, if not the most important grammar rules past the very basics.

Music Theory: What is the circle of fifths?
Ethan Hein did a good job of explaining some facts about music, but the information about the Circle of Fifths is a little different than his explanation. The Circle of Fifths can be confusing, though, if you don't know how to use it. The Circle of Fifths in my explanation is for all the Major scales. The minor scales would involve a different explanation. If you start at C (which has no sharps or flats) and count up the keyboard 5 notes (and you ALWAYS have to start counting with the first note - in other words - C is 1, D is 2, E is 3, F is 4 and G is 5), you'll signNow G and that key has 1 sharp. Count up another 5 (be sure to say that G is 1) and you get to D. The key of D has 2 sharps. Count up another 5 notes from D and you get A. The key of A has 3 sharps. Start counting again from A and you get E and the key of E has 4 sharps. Count again from E (up 5 starting with E) and you get B. The key of B has 5 sharps. Count up another 5 and you will signNow F# and it has 6 sharps. On up 5 from F# and you get to C# and it has all the sharps - 7 of them. The way to get the flats is to count DOWN from C 5 notes - starting with C (1) and count down 5 - you'll signNow F. It has only 1 flat. Count down another 5 notes from F and you'll get Bb and the key of Bb has 2 flats. You can't say "B" because the B key is a sharp key. Count down from Bb 5 notes and you will signNow Eb. Remember to always count the first note as 1. The key of Eb has 3 flats. Count down 5 notes from Eb and you will signNow Ab and that key has 4 flats. Count down 5 notes from Ab and you signNow Db with 5 flats. Count down 5 notes from Db and you signNow Gb with 6 flats. Count down 5 notes from Gb and you signNow Cb with 7 flats. Now - a word that you will need to remember is BEADGCF. This word will tell you what the sharps and flats are in all the keys. When you are counting UP 5 notes and getting to the sharp keys - start on the end of the word (right side) and those are the sharps that are in the sharp keys. Example: G is 1 sharp and that sharp is F#. D is 2 sharps and those notes are C# and F# and so on until you get to the key of C# and then it is all 7 sharps. The flats start at the beginning of the word BEADGCF. For the key of F you have 1 flat and it is Bb. For the key of Bb, you have 2 flats and they are Bb and Eb and so on.One other tip: If you learn either the sharps or the flats, then you will have the other (flats or sharps) learned by using this tip. You also have to remember the key word BEADGCF. The key of G has 1 sharp (F#), so the key of Gb has 6 flats (BEADGC). They all add up to seven. The key of A has 3 sharps so Ab has 4 flats and so on.If you learn the Circle of Fifths correctly, you will always have the correct notes in the major scale and you will be able to play those keys without hunting and pecking for the correct notes. Remember BEADGCF. That is the golden word that tells you what the notes are in each scale that are sharp or flat.

How long does it take to learn to play piano?
I once read somewhere that piano is the easiest instrument to play in the beginning but the hardest to master in the end; and truth be told, I really agree with this. I started taking piano lessons at the age of 7 when my mom got sick of hearing me slamming random keys all the time. At first, I made quite a lot progress. I practiced around 15 minutes a day, and in less than a month or so I was already playing familiar melodies. However, as years went by, it started to get more and more challenging and 15 minutes a day wasn’t enough anymore. At that time, I had several friends playing at my level who quit, thinking it was too much work, but I didn't. In fact I started practicing more deligently, really dedicating myself. Long story short, I eventually completed grade 8 (Conservatory Canada) with honors, as well as the theory part. But all of this didn't happen overnight. My advice to you if you want to learn piano and be good at it (like actually good, not just “Chopsticks good”) is first and foremost, start taking piano lessons with a teacher and practice what you've learned EVERYDAY. I can't stress this enough; Piano is like a language, if you don't practice, you'll likely forget it just as quickly as you learned it. So that’s why it's so important to make time everyday for piano, even when you’re tired and you don't feel like it. Furthermore, when you get to the part where it gets more complicated, don't quit! Just hang in there, once you pass this crucial step, you’ll find that playing gets way more fun and effortless. Another tip: don't rely on your ear too much at the beginning, as it will interfere with your sight reading skills. You need a good foundation on which you can build upon.In conclusion, learning the piano can be a short or a long process, depending on how skilled you desire to be. All in all, the key (pun intended, ha!) when learning the piano is to be tenacious, persevering and to practice everyday!Good luck my friend!
