How are cracked versions of software created and why are developers not able to prevent it?
Cracked versions of software are created with the use of debuggers. (A debugger is a special type of software that lets programmers deconstruct their software into its constituent parts for the purpose of finding bugs, and thus de-bugging. Additionally debuggers can be used for reverse-engineering, or to see what is inside the software, to learn its logic. The latter method is used mostly by malware researchers to study what malware (or computer viruses) do on-the-inside. But it can be also used by an attacker to "crack" (or bypass) legal software registration, or at times, to alter normal behavior of software, for instance by injecting a malicious code into it.)For the sake of this example, I will assume that the software that is being "cracked" was compiled into a native code, and is not a .NET or a JavaScript based application. (Otherwise it will be somewhat trivial to view its source code.) The compiled native code is a bit more tricky "beast" to study. (Native means that the code executes directly by the CPU, GPU, or other hardware.)So let's assume that the goal of an attacker is to bypass the registration logic in the software so that he or she doesn't have to pay for it. (Later for lolz, he or she may also post such "crack" on some shady online forum or on a torrent site so that others can "use" it too and give him or her their appreciation.)For simplicity let's assume that the original logic that was checking for the software registration was written in C++ and was something similar to the following code snippet:In this code sample "RegistrationName" and "RegistrationCode" are special strings of text that a legitimate software user will receive after paying for the license. (The name is usually that person's actual name or their email address, and the code is some string of unique/special characters that is tied to the name.)In the logic above, the function named "isRegistrationCodeGood()" will check if "RegistrationName" and "RegistrationCode" are accepted using some proprietary method. If they are, it will return true. Otherwise false. That outcode will dictate which branch (or scope) the execution will follow.So the logic above will either show that registration failed and quit:Or, if the registration code and name matched, it will save the registration details in persistent storage (such as the File System or System Registry) using the function named "rememberRegistrationParameters()" and then display the message thanking the user for registering:A "cracker" will obviously want to achieve the second result for any registration code that he or she enters. But they have a problem. They do not have the C++ source code, part of which I showed above. (I hope not!)So the only recourse for an attacker is to disassemble the binary code (that always ships with software in the form of .exe and .dll files on Windows, and mostly as Unix executables inside the .app packages on a Mac.) An attacker will then use a debugger to study the binary code and try to locate the registration logic that I singled out above.Next you can see the flowchart for a snippet of code that I showed in C++, presented via a low-level debugger. Or, as the code will be read in the binary form after compilation:(For readability I added comments on the right with the names of functions and variables. They will not be present in the code that an attacker could see.)(To understand what is shown above an attacker will have to have good knowledge of the Assembly language instructions for the native code.)I also need to point out that having a disassembly snippet like the one above is the final result for an attacker. The main difficulty for him or her is to locate it among millions and millions of other similar lines of code. And that is their main challenge. Not many people can do it and that is why software "cracking" is a special skill.So having found the code snippet above in the software binary file a "cracker" has two choices:1) Modify (or patch) the binary.2) Reverse-engineer the "isRegistrationCodeGood()" function and copy its logic to create what is known as a "KeyGen" or "Key Generator."Let's review both:The first choice is quite straightforward. Since an attacker got this far, he or she knows the Intel x64 Instruction Set quite well. So they simply change the conditional jump from "jnz short loc_7FF645671430" at the address 00007FF645671418 (circled in red in the screenshots) to unconditional jump, or "jmp short loc_7FF645671430". This will effectively remove any failed registration code entries and anything that the user types in will be accepted as a valid registration.Also note that this modification can be achieved by changing just one byte in the binary code from 0x75 to 0xEB:But this approach comes with a "price" of modifying the original binary file. For that an attacker needs to write his own "patcher" (or a small executable that will apply the modification that I described above.) The downside of this approach for an attacker is that patching an original executable file will break its digital signature, which may alert the end-user or the vendor. Additionally the "patcher" executable made by an attacker can be easily flagged and blocked by the end-user's antivirus software, or lead criminal investigators to the identity of the attacker.The second choice is a little bit more tricky. An attacker will have to study "isRegistrationCodeGood()" function and copy it into his own small program that will effectively duplicate the logic implemented in the original software and let him generate the registration code from any name, thus giving any unscrupulous user of that software an ability to register it without making a payment.Vendors of many major software products understand the potential impact of the second method and try to prevent it by requiring what is known as "authentication." This is basically a second step after registration, where the software submits registration name to the company's web server that returns a response back to the software of whether the code was legitimate or not. This is done by Microsoft when you purchase Windows (they call it "Activate Windows") and also by signNow, and many other companies. This second step may be done behind-the-scenes on the background while the software is running, and will usually lead to cancellation of prior registration if it was obtained illegally.So now you know how software is "cracked".Let me answer why it is not possible to prevent it. It all boils down to the fact that any software code needs to be read either by CPU (in case of a binary native code) or by an interpreter or a JIT compiler (in case of JavaScript or .NET code.) This means that if there's a way to read/interpret something, no matter how complex or convoluted it is, an attacker with enough knowledge and persistence will be able to read it as well, and thus break it.There is an argument though that cloud-based software is more secure, which is true, since its (binary) code remains on the server and end-users do not have direct access to it. And even though cloud-based software is definitely the future, it has some major drawbacks that will never allow it to fully replace your conventional software. To name just a few:Not everyone has an internet connection, or is willing to upload their data online. Additionally someone’s internet connection can be very expensive or too slow to make the software run very laggy.Then there’s a question of distributed computing. For instance, Blizzard Entertainment would never make “World of Warcraft” to fully run on their servers due to immense computational resources needed to render every single scene for every player they have. Thus it is in their best interest to let each individual user’s computer to do the rendering instead.As a software developer myself, I obviously don't like when people steal software licenses. But I have to accept it and live with it. The good news is that there are not that many people who are willing to go extra mile and search for a cracked version of software. The main problem for those who do, is that by downloading a patched executable, or an attacker's KeyGen or a Patcher, they are effectively "trusting" him or her not to put anything "nasty" into it that was not "advertised on the package" (stuff like trojans, malware, or keyloggers.) So the question for those people becomes -- is it worth the cost of the software license to potentially infect your system with a nasty virus?On the other side of the equation, some developers react very negatively to any attempts to steal their software licenses. (I was there too.) They try to implement all kinds of countermeasures -- anything from tricking reverse-engineers, to adding booby traps in the code that may do something nasty if the code detects that it is being debugged, to obfuscating or scrambling the code, to enforcing all kinds of convoluted DRM schemes, to blocking users from certain countries. I personally try to stay away from all of those measures. And here's why:A) Any kind of anti-reverse-engineering tactics could be bypassed by an attacker with enough persistence. So why bother and waste my time when I can invest that time into adding something useful to my software that will make it more productive for legitimate users?B) Some code packers could create false positives with antivirus software, which is obviously not good for marketing of that software. It also creates unnecessary complexity for the developer to debug the software.C) Adding booby traps in the code can also “misfire” on your legitimate users, which will really infuriate them and can even lead to lawsuits.D) Any DRM scheme will probably catch some 100 illegal users and greatly inconvenience 10,000 legitimate ones. So why do it to your good customers?E) Our statistics show that about 75% of all illegal licenses come from China, Russia, Brazil, to name the worst offenders. (I also understand that the reason may be much lower incomes that people have in those countries.) The main issue for us though was the fact that if we enforce our DRM or add some strong registration authentication, many people that wanted to bypass our registration would simply use a stolen credit card number. And we had no control over it. Our system will use it to send them a legitimate license only to have the payment bounce in weeks time. As a result we would lose the money that were paid for the license, plus the credit card company will impose an additional chargeback fee to our account, which may range from $0.25 to $20 per bad purchase on top of the license cost.F) As was pointed out in the comments, some companies may actually benefit from allowing pirated copies of their software. Microsoft for instance gets a lot of free publicity from people using their Windows OS, the same goes for signNow with their Photoshop. That is a good point that I agree with.So my philosophy is now this -- if someone wants to go extra mile and steal our software, go for it! They went this far to do it anyway, so they probably have a good reason. On the positive side there are so many other customers that appreciate the work that goes into creating software that greatly outnumber those that don’t.PS. Thank you for all your feedback! If you are in SA stream, then frankly it's going to be a bit difficult but certainly not impossible. I would advice you to start preparing from extra books as NCERT is not going to help you much.Firstly, don't panic. You can definitely clear it with flying colors if you are relaxed and set your mind towards your goals.Allot definite time for study say 3-4 hours for KVPY preparation.For physics, start strengthening your concepts. Use HC Verma or DC pandey. Since you don't have much time. I would advice you to do only MCQs.For chemistry, I would say read the topics thoroughly and try to finish most of the topic before mid Oct. Read only NCERT for inorganic chemistry. For physical, try doing as much as quality numerical you can.For maths, I would advice you to buy an additional book for practising good questions.Additional advices-Try giving as much as mock tests as possible once you have completed your syllabus and also in between regularly to check your status.In SA stream, some questions come which are in 12th syllabus. I would simply advice you to ignore them and focus on your 11tg syllabus.Divide your preparation time among all subjects.Analyse your mistakes in your mock tests and work on them.For biology, just revise your NCERT books of 9th and 10th. Mortgage Protection Leads: Use Multiple ChannelsThe more prospecting channels you have, the more money you will make. But, you have to start somewhere.The key in the beginning is building a foundation that allows you at a minimum to have someone to call every day. Then you can eventually work towards expanding your prospecting channels and lowering your new client cost of acquisition.This means you need leads, and leads cost money, which is exactly why you need to decide whether to go captive (agency provides free life leads) or independent (you pay for life leads).Common types of mortgage protection leads and prospecting methods.Direct MailThese are the most common type of life insurance leads. The recipient completes a postage paid return card which in turn lands in your mail box and on your call list. Many agents will say these are the best leads to work, but the problem is you aren’t guaranteed a response rate. For example, you send out 1,000 letters and have no idea how many will get returned. The average response is 1% and that’s just an average. Make sure you have these costs built into your plan if you’re solely relying on direct mail.Direct mail lead campaigns retail for anywhere between $450 and $470 per 1,000 mailers. There are also some companies that offer a cost per lead option which is roughly $40-$50 per lead with a 15-20 lead order minimum. This is the company we like to use for direct mail mortgage protection leads. Feel free to connect with them directly and discuss your mailing campaigns.Door KnockingMy absolute favorite! I have made thousands of dollars simply knocking doors of leads I couldn’t signNow over the phone. You’ll find over time you have a stack of leads on your desk that you just can’t signNow. Next time you’re out simply pop in unannounced, introduce yourself, show them the lead card they returned, and tell them exactly why you are there. This is arguably the easiest way to make an extra $1,000 / week.You already paid for these so you might as well work them to get the best bang for your buck.Tele-marketed Life LeadsThese leads are generated through a call center. They record the call and upload the lead to a database where you can access and begin calling to set your appointments. Tele-marketed leads are cheaper than direct mail but have a much shorter shelf life which means your window to convert them to an appointment is much shorter. The shelf life problem with tele-marketed leads comes from the fact that consumers are less committed when they say “yes” over the phone versus when they fill out a piece of direct mail and send it back. The key for the agent is acting quickly on these leads.Tele-marketed leads are usually in the $20-$25 per lead range but can certainly go lower if you commit to ordering specific volume. Ask the lead company if they will give you any breaks on high volume orders.Aged mortgage protection leads (old direct mail or tele marketed)Yes, these are just old leads of the two types listed above. This is a very cost effective way to expand your prospecting methods as costs can be as low as a few dollars per lead.Aged leads usually cost around $5-$8 per lead. Many marketing organizations have these types of leads available at no cost to help keep you busy when you’re first starting. Definitely ask about this option and press to get them free!Public recordsMany agents will access public records to see who has purchased a home in the last 30, 60 or 90 days. You must make sure they aren’t on the do not call list, but this is a great way to constantly get new home buyer leads.Each municipality will vary on what it charges. Many times, you can access public mortgage records for around $5.Friends and FamilyGood old fashion insurance marketing at its best: Ask the people who know you best. This has and remains one of the strongest methods of prospecting for life insurance.These babies are FREE!Policy DeliveryDelivering policies is a great way to generate more leads and referrals. By delivering your mortgage protection policy, you now have the chance to revisit discussions from your first appointment. Policy delivery will result in additional life and annuity sales.Policy delivery leads are the best kind, FREE!Mortgage Lender RelationshipsStrategic relationships are one of best way to generate mortgage protection life insurance leads. You can partner with a small regional mortgage lender to funnel you each closed loan. This works out great as it drastically lowers your cost of acquisition, but can be tougher to put in place.It takes strong relationship skills, but certainly pays off once you’re in the blood stream of the lender.As you can see, there are many ways to prospect and generate mortgage protection leads.When you first begin, you’ll likely rely on direct mail as it’s the most common lead generation tactic and provides stable foundation for you to learn how to sell. But, don’t be imprisoned by what most agents are doing. Believe in yourself… give some of these other methods a try.This will help you gain confidence and you’ll soon realize the value of integrating additional prospecting methods. It’s also important you don’t forget to track your average premiums so you can consistently monitor your costs of acquisition of a new client.Can you see yourself selling mortgage protection life insurance if you knew it could generate a six-figure income?Mortgage Insurance Salary: How to make $5,000 a week.Most agents set appointments with 50% of their leads and average agents will convert 50% of those appointments to sales. In this example, let’s set a realistic production goal of eight sales per week. Assuming a 50% close rate, you will need roughly 30 leads each week.Let’s walk through this backwards so you can see exactly how to hit the $5,000 weekly income goal.Weekly Income = $5,130$6,480 ($960 Average Sale x 90% Blended Average Commission) – $1,350 ($45 Lead Cost x 30 leads)30 Leads = 15 Appointments = 7.5 New Sales / WeekAsk yourself the following questions…What would that weekly number look like if you added one or two closed referrals?What if you knocked on the door of five leads from the week before?What if you had a relationship with a local mortgage broker and he/she sent you one new lead each week?What impact would these additional prospecting channels have on your income and how much could they lower your out of pocket lead costs?It works.Step 9. Make a Sales Plan and Stick to itBuy leads, set appointments, analyze coverage qualification, make sales, service the policies and repeat.Below are some additional considerations when creating your plan.Identify your target market.Know the numbers. Create a proforma for your business and a plan for profitability.Make sure you have enough working capital (whatever you think you’ll need… you’ll need more).Identify primary and secondary lead sources (this will be one of your largest expenses).Make sure you have capabilities to scrub applications before submitting them to carriers (mistakes by the agent are the number one reason an insurance policy is delayed).Become a student of your carriers by closely reviewing their underwriting policies.Have you organized all your case management information when business starts picking up?Consider whether you’re going to expand your business beyond mortgage protection.These are all things you need to consider as a business owner and it takes time to get them ironed out.Selling mortgage protection is easy once you have mastered the steps required to be successful. In order to master anything, you need to put in the work.Below is a quick look at how some agents use their calendar to plan their week. The calendar allows them to schedule not only work but also family time to ensure a strong balance.Step 8. Make a Sales Plan and Stick to itYou’ll notice time is blocked off each week for setting appointments and open sales appointments. This is a great way to stay organized and ensure your daily disciplines aren’t falling through the cracks.For me, each day starts with exercise to keep the mind fresh. Also, notice I’ve scheduled breakfast with the kids and lunch with my wife. It’s extremely important to have balance in this business, so why not just include it as a priority on your calendar?Does your current job allow you to build time with your family into your work day?Step 10. Cross Selling Drives More CommissionsHave you ever taken an insurance training course? For example, do you know how to pivot from mortgage protection to selling annuities or index universal life (IUL)?This is where the business gets exciting! It’s also where so many agents fail.Cross selling insurance is always hard when you aren’t equipped with a plan. It may sound as simple as falling off a log, but I can promise you that’s not the case. I’m sure you can imagine how much valuable it can be to have more than one insurance policy in each household. By doing this, you drastically increase your chances of making another sale down the road, which is a much cheaper than trying to acquire a new client.Check out what the White House had to say about the cost of acquiring a new customer. If this doesn’t scream cross selling, I’m not sure what does.It is 6-7 times more expensive to acquire a new customer than it is to keep a current one.– White House Office of Consumer AffairsSimple Cross Selling TacticCross selling is about understanding client needs. One of our agents’ most used tools is what we call the “Thumbprint”. Its sole purpose is to collect a small amount of information that will open doors to future meetings. See below.Simple Cross Selling TacticUsing the Thumbprint or a resource like it will help you collect key information from your clients that will prove useful down the road.Let’s walk through an example of how easy this tool is to use.Assume you’re selling $2,000 per week of life insurance premium. There’s nothing wrong with $2,000 per week, but, you are beginning to get the itch about leaving money behind at the kitchen table.Time to make a change.When you’re done completing your client’s life insurance application, simply bring out the Thumbprint and ask the following yes or no questions. (Yes or No only, no need to ask for details at this point)Do you have a 401k and are you contributing beyond your employer’s match?Do you have a plan at the local funeral home covering your burial expenses?Do you currently have any long-term care plans in place?Are you currently contributing to an IRA or any qualified retirement accounts?Do you have any non-qualified savings such as Roth IRA or CDs?Have you examined the amount of current coverage you have in place to determine if it’s accurate?Make sure and breeze through this (two minutes’ tops!) and continue focusing on your original purpose of the meeting, selling mortgage protection. Focus on making the sale that is in front of you and set yourself up for success in the next meeting. Don’t forget what I said about patience!Collecting this data allows you to easily open new discussions at your second appointment (policy delivery).Use policy delivery to start expanding your discussions.For example, “Mrs. Baker, you mentioned in our last meeting that you have a 401k with an old employer. How did you feel when the news broke in 2008 that millions of people had lost a signNow portion of their 401k? Are you satisfied with your current level of coverage?This instantly sets the stage to introduce the safety of an alternative retirement solution such as a fixed annuity or index universal life (IUL) policy. You’ll notice I didn’t ask Yes or No questions. This meeting is about understanding needs.The key to training is not just learning what to say, but why you are saying it.What if you discovered annuity sales opportunities in 15% of all your appointments and IULs in 25%?Based on the 15 appointments / week example we reviewed earlier, that’s six new appointments and three new sales for no additional cash outlay. Not bad! Especially when the coverage amounts sold are much higher with mortgage protection life insurance.How much impact would three new sales per week have on your income?Remember, patience is one of the major reasons agents fail in this business.
