Original question: What would you say to learning piano by slowly learning a super difficult piece like Turkish March?Here’s a story that may or may not be apocryphal (I can’t remember where I read it and I can’t find it on the web now).The physicist Richard Feynman was well known for his broad interests, and his ability to teach himself all manner of weird and wonderful skills: he was an expert on cracking safes, a great player of bongo drums, and not half bad at drawing and painting, and he was mostly self-taught in all these skills.Now the story goes that he got it into his head to learn to play a piece on the piano. As I recall, he wasn’t so much interested in becoming a pianist as in learning just one piece, so that he could say that he did it. And he decided to do it the way you suggest: learn to read notes and then tackle his chosen piece slowly and bit by bit.The piece he chose was “Flight of the Bumblebee,” which is rather more difficult than Mozart’s Turkish March. After a long time of battling it out with the piece, he had to admit defeat. This says something, because Feynman was incredibly tenacious when it came to learning new things; it was all but unheard of for him to give up.It tells me that perhaps it is not the best way to go about learning piano. The Turkish March is not a super difficult piece at all, but it will be for a beginner. Trying to learn it from scratch may well lead to more frustration than joy. And you have to ask yourself why exactly you want to do it. If you really want to learn to play piano, then there are plenty of far easier pieces that are just as beautiful and worth playing, and that will lead to you being able to tackle the Turkish March without too much difficulty. If the Turkish March is the only reason why you want to learn to play I would suggest that you are actually not that much interested in playing piano.But there is another thing here which I learned form personal experience. Years ago I was quite enthusiastic about music, and taught myself piano. My idea was to simply get hold of the prescribed examination pieces for piano, and then work my way through them grade by grade. To some extent it worked, and I made quite a bit of progress. But I eventually hit a ceiling: because I did not spend enough time and effort on acquiring basic technique, I found that I had increasing difficulty mastering more difficult pieces at all.At the height of my powers, I could noisily bang and clang my way through the Turkish March, but the whole thing became increasingly frustrating and unsatisfactory. I found to my unpleasant surprise that works by Bach considered easy were quite beyond me (because I never learned proper independence of the hands). I never could master any pieces requiring substantial jumps in the left hand. I struggled with any unusual time signatures or rhythms, and found it all but impossible to play anything where the two hands play different rhythms (e.g. triplet pattern in the left hand superimposed on “normal” time in the right, as is found in a great deal of music).All of these problems had the same cause: I did not spend enough time mastering basic techniques (without a teacher I was of course quite clueless as to how to go about it!)As Robert Schumann reportedly said, it is better to play an easy piece beautifully than to make a mess of a difficult one. And I think one should first learn to play the easy pieces to perfection before tackling the more difficult ones, while also learning some theory and basic musicianship, otherwise you miss out on basic techniques (and, moreover, you miss out on a lot of fun and personal satisfaction).

And your average modern paper-user is used to a variety and array of options that would have made your average Phoenician hang up the phone in amazement.We have paper made of the lignum, a natural stringy fiber derived from dissolving the adhesive out of trees, from cellulose derived chemically by processing cotton, from silk (you don’t even want to know where silk comes from), from artificial materials as simple as cellulose chemically formed from hydrocarbon molecules derived from oil, coal, or some madly grinning pot chemist with too many pots. The number of paper compositions exceed the number of uses, and the characteristics of the resulting sheets are mind boggling.Up until recently, dry paper was considered the ideal insulator. That paper was probably a standard tree lignite paper, unbleached, like what was still called butcher paper when I was a kid, some 55years ago.bHowever, as recent research has revealed, natural fibers like lignite and cellulose have conductive paths built in which aren’t ‘fixed’ by beating, forming, dissolution of the wood’s adhesive matrix, or washing. What did control the conductive properties of paper, then, was the relative humidity of the surrounding air, so most electrical components for which paper was used as an insulating form was sealed with a waterproofing agent. Making that paper more conductive (which still left it with resistance on the order of hundreds of thousands of Ohms per square centimeter (0.1–1.0 meg Ohms/cm^2), while dry paper Exhibited resistance more on the order of tens-of-megohms/cm^2).That simple cellulose paper can be found today, but it was formally supplanted for ‘civilized’ use by papers with recycled rag content, or made by less natural means from oil-based precursors. The bleaching reduces the resistivity, and without post processing, such papers can become as conductive as 20 Ohms/cm^2. Lamination of all kinds of sheet and roll stock is now common, allowing layers of insulating plastic, mildly conducting conductive-material impregnated plastics and conductive metal foils. Even low-conductance dry unbleached papers can be made conductive in post processing, using various formulas of conductive ink, in one case, available in fiber-tipped pens much like the permanent ink markers of the 60s, the highlighters of the last fourth years, etc. Conductive inks for common press work, inkjet printer use, and brush painting which absorb into the paper and permit electronic circuits to be constructed using conductive adhesives and standard surface mount components are revolutionizing the greeting card industry, and if I get another scratchy-voiced, shrieking birthday card telling me I’m an old fart, I may start a CounterRevolution myself…. well, you get the idea.This raises another question: when the conductive layer becomes part of the paper’s matrix, is the paper overall conductive, even though other portions aren’t? We never called Printed Circuit board “conductive”, because the laminated copper layer didn’t infiltrate the insulating and supporting Fiberglas or plastic layer, even when thirteen layers of each were interconnected with bias and glued and pressed together to create multilayer boards.So, as you can see, there is nothing uncomplicated about the simple question, “is paper conductor”, even though, if a fit of restraint, I have omitted decades of history, petabytes of data, philosophical and scientific papers addressing both the insulative and conductive characteristics of standard stock papers, beautiful papers, holographic imprint, and photographically coated papers, all of which could be wholly, partially, or emphatically not conductive, and didn’t even mention that pure cellulose papers used in electrical fields of tens of thousands of volts to spread genetic materials for analysis are non-conductive for filtering coffee…Sometimes things are hard to answer exactly.

My wife and I met in Japan. We ran a school together in Okayama one Shinkansen stop away from Hiroshima, the site of the first use of an atomic weapon.In May 2016 President Obama was in Japan visiting Hiroshima. It was the first time a sitting President had ever visited the city.Kumiko and I were married May 28th, 1994 near Fayetteville, Texas and held our reception in Cat Spring Agricultural Hall. We had started a school months earlier but it had no name so the timing was perfect - we named our school Alamo in honor of the memory of the Alamo heroes and also the Japanese professor who had honored them with a gift.Fast forward to 2016. It’s our 22nd anniversary and President Obama is in Japan visiting Hiroshima. It was the first time a sitting U.S. President had visited the city. Upon learning of his visit some victims wished to hear an apology from the President.Shizuka Kamei, who lost his sister in Hiroshima and went on to become a powerful, conservative cabinet member told a group of journalists: "If President Obama’s not coming with an apology, he should not come at all."The President did not apologize but he offered this statement, "We have a shared responsibility to look directly into the eye of history and ask what we must do differently to curb such suffering again. The draw to the lecture was to hear her describe what it was like defending Islamic terrorists. How did she defend them? Using illegal means, that’s how. Stewart was convicted in 2005 of providing material support to terrorists after a jury found that she had conspired with her client, the Islamist “blind sheikh” Omar Abdul Rahman, to smuggle out messages to his followers.In 2000 and 2001, I was a plaintiff in a lawsuit. During this time, I appealed for help to stop the airliner plots. I was aware of the plots through Japanese media reports however there were several personally compelling reasons why these media reports (including a Boston-based report on airliner screening failure) affected me quite deeply and personally and it had everything to do with my line of work through Japan and my educational background as well as the experiences I had lived through. The pipe had a hook on the end which had penetrated through my skull. My wife who witnessed the attack said that she could see my brain. I had multiple seizures.This is what brought me to the center. Lawyers from the company I was suing interfered with my pleas to stop the airline plotters by making themselves the recipients of information gleaned from my therapy. I pleaded with the therapist to make certain law enforcement was receiving my direst concerns after the therapist revealed to me that the law firm had contacted the center and had requested my signature for the transfer of the notes to them. Exactly a year after 9/11 - during the law firm’s deposition of me - I discovered that the purpose of their obtaining my notes was to target my wife. My wife had also been the object of harassment by my company’s managers.As another example of “lawyering at the edge” I discovered at this time that an attorney - John Riley had sued United Airlines and won a settlement of 3 million award for discrimination and wrongful termination on behalf of his client Abu-Aziz who claiming a stewardess had unfairly discriminated against her co-worker Aziz by commenting that he fit part of a terrorist profile. United Airlines had accused him of stealing alcohol and generally not being a good employee. I called and spoke personally with John Riley to express my foreboding that the award was sending out the wrong message. My heart was in my throat but I was direct and sincere in tone.I discovered John Riley’s case after lawyers had asked me what kind of settlement offer I would be willing to consider. I said I had no idea. They recommended I conduct an online search. In less than a minute I found his case.It is not uncommon in cultures with a strong tradition of alcohol consumption that being drunk is seen as a legitimate excuse or at least a special circumstance that tends to take the piss out of arresting and prosecuting such offenders. Japan is a country where alcohol is only a vending machine away and an intoxicated person if not behind the wheel is simply ignored or directed to a taxi. Low speed chases are a common occurrence while high-speed chases are very rare. But the streets are not without risk especially if you are a foreigner. Being a foreigner demands extra caution. I was attacked my second year in Japan by four drunken pipe-wielding construction workers who were caught by police but escaped prosecution because their victim was a foreigner and they had been drinking.Prior to Pearl Harbor the Japanese embassy in DC apparently got a telegram from Tokyo to be forwarded to the U.S. basically saying negotiations were going nowhere - war was imminent - but it wasn't received and delivered to the U.S. until after the Pearl Harbor attack supposedly because the diplomats had been out drinking. It’s a plausible story. But then again, it doesn’t make any sense that the Japanese would have done anything to compromise the secrecy of their sneak attack killing thousands of Americans. Even today lawyers in Japan knock themselves out arguing over the finer points of the law such as whether such-and-such a person or department had attempted to meet the requirements of a formal declaration of war before the onset of hostilities. It all kind of makes you want to throw up.Perhaps the closest America came to thwarting Pearl Harbor, 9/11 and the August 2006 airline attacks came from the ALAMO's Rosetta Stone, a gift from Professor Shiga Shigetaka who was moved by the story of the Alamo heroes. He died in 1927. He was a more pragmatic personality than his student Noguchi who was swept up defending Japan's campaign in China. In 1938 - 11 years after his former teacher, the gift-giver’s death - Noguchi engaged in a very public exchange of letters with Rabindranath Tagore in an effort to bring about international sympathy for Japan's China campaign. He failed miserably as Tagore excoriated his arguments soundly. It was, at least, an eye opener: Noguchi was no Shigetaka and he rambled on about suppressing the weak and old and one's own doubt (I think he called it ‘intrigue’) to make way for the new and strong - a common theme in Nazi ideology. The exchange represent the pivotal moment Japanese intellectuals adopted a course turning their backs on America, India, and England, in favor of an alliance with Nazi Germany. If, after Nanking in 1937, there was any hope of an about-face in policy it would have had to come in the form of an appeal to the legacy of Shigetaka. And the appeal would have had to have had to come from many sources of influence within Japan herself to have been broadly accepted.When Shigetaka came to America with his stone gift and his entourage he did not know with absolute certainty it would be accepted. Of course, there were letters exchanged, newspaper articles foretelling the event but even still, there was uncertainty in the air if for no other reason than Shigetaka was well-versed in Murphy’s Law. *For example few know this but he actually made three stones in case the other two broke. Unfortunately not everyone is a fan of Murphy’s Law, of preparing for every outcome while assuming nothing. And even if you are a fan of it, it doesn’t mean you’re good at it.ISIS loves Toyota trucksSan Antonio is home to a Toyota factory. I had nightmares of falling from a tower and seeing another man just yards away falling alongside me. “They (the airline plotters) are in our flight schools, aren’t they?” I asserted. “You want the plot, stopped,” she replied. “Yes!” I confirmed.This is OUR country. We don’t need to settle for second or third or fourth best.We can take it forward.It’s time. Time for the Alamo to shine. How does excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere lead to climatic change?
I CAN’T believe I am STILL answering this question!!!There are proofs for the reality of AGW from EVERY field of science. But of all the different proofs I have read, none can be considered ‘incontrovertible,’ and so some ten years ago, I began my OWN research to see if such COULD assembled, and in fact was completely SUCCESSFUL in that endeavor.The question of ‘how do we KNOW that the current global warming is human-induced’ requires an examination of ALL of the different means by which global climate changes have been caused in the past. These include the well-known Milankovic cycles and other orbital changes, as well as variations in solar outputs. The subject of whether or not CO2 and Methane constitute ‘greenhouse gases’ and the level of their potential effects was well-proven and established in the late 19thcentury by Arrhenius and numerous other since that time. The physical properties of ‘water vapor’ as a greenhouse gas have LIKEWISE been well-established, and more, the inter-relationship BETWEEN CO2 and water vapor as well (CO2 increases the greenhouse effect of water vapor by as much as 80%). These ‘issues,’ are simply not subject to ‘debate’ of any kind, after more than a hundred years of comparative testing using the scientific method of reproducibility.Examinations of the Geologic and Cryological record LIKEWISE reveals certain absolute truths. The first of these is that in ALL of the previous glacial and interglacial events of the past million years (the Pleistocene), it is revealed by ice core data that in ALL of these events, temperature changes PRECEDED changes in the level of atmospheric CO2. This ‘time lag’ could be as much as 200-700 years, but in EVERY case was repeated and repeatable. This represents the ‘normal’ course of events in ‘natural’ climate changes brought about by the Milankovic cycles.However, in the long history of the Earth, this is not the ONLY possible ‘course of events,’ and our OWN current condition is precisely the OPPOSITE of these past scenarios, in that in our case, a massive increase in CO2 is PRECEDING a signNow rise in global temperature, to date, by as much as a hundred years, and in fact is only ‘measurable’ in any statistically meaningful way since 1980, or the past 35 years.So what ‘other’ set of circumstances in the history of the Earth have been ‘analogous’ to the CURRENT sequence of events? Geology and Paleontology tells us that only ONE other set of ‘natural occurrences’’ can reproduce what we are seeing NOW, and that involves what is known as a ‘massive flood basalt event.’ Such events are indeed cataclysmic, and essentially involve the opening of a great CRACK in the Earth’s crust, thousands of kilometers long, through which pours gases, ash and lava that covers thousands of square kilometers thousands of feet deep over the course of up to a million years. There have been THREE such signNow events notable in the past, to include the ‘Siberian Traps’ (worse yet, the lava had to come up through huge coal fields to signNow the surface, burning, and exploding ‘fly ash’ and immeasurable gigatons of CO2, CO3, Sulfur dioxides and hydroxides across the face of the Earth) that wiped out 90% of ALL life on Earth. The second notable event is referred to as the ‘Deccan Traps’ in India, which burned and spread for some 300,00 thousand years to a depth of 8,000’ and paradoxically, may have been ‘snuffed out’ by the great Chicxulub meteor that finished off the dinosaurs. The LAST was the North Atlantic Igneous Province, some 55 Million years ago that created the famous ‘PETM’ (Paleo-Eocene Thermal Maximum). But since that time, there have been NO such ‘massive flood basalt events,’ and certainly, there is NO such occurring TODAY.Since this IS the case, and since CO2 levels are now FAR higher than they have been for some 3 million years, and only NOW are global temperatures rising to MEET that necessary state of equilibrium, there can only be ONE ‘source’ for this current sequence, and that ‘source’ is US, and our incessant BURNING of fossil fuels, RELEASING the pent-up CO2 and Methane into the atmosphere in every effect and measurable circumstance in EXACTLY the same manner as a ‘natural’ massive flood basalt event,.
