Your daughter will be able to travel to India as long as it’s valid. I just went through this for my daughter, and can try to explain itThe OCI application process is the most complicated process I have ever gone through in my life. Recently they have started making everything online, and of course becausewe are like this only, they have to do everything their own way instead of just copying what every other country in the world does. So, buckle up for some fun. See, the thing is that there are many agencies involved here. OCIs are granted by the Indian Passport office. However, the embassy is actually going to provide the OCI card. And the embassy doesn’t want to deal with people anymore (unless there’s an emergency). So, they have picked a private company called Cox and King’s (CKGS) to be the intermediarySo, the process is thisa) You go to the CKGS website to start an applicationb) Midway through the application, you halt the application, and go to the Indian Passport office’s website and start a new applicationc) You scan and upload a bunch of documents. d) During the process, the website will ask you to sign the document by drawing your signature. DONT SIGN THE DOCUMENT BY DRAWING YOUR SIGNATURE. Because after you have submitted your signature, it tells you that if the applicant is a minor, you need a thumbprint and you shouldn’t put the parent’s signature. By the time it tells you that, there is no way to go back and unbdo your signature. Why? because we are like this onlye) The Passport office website will give you a softcopy of the application form that you just filled out. Print this form, and keep the soft copy. I can’t understand how they decide what they can signNow and what they can’t. Pay attention to what needs to be done to which document because if you make a mistake, CKGS will return your application back to you. By the way, these documents are extensive. For example, you will need to show that you and your wife are married, so you have to provide your marriage certificate. I have no idea what single parents do! h) Reupload all the documents that you uploaded in step c. By the way fill all the information again. Why couldn’t CKGS talk to India passport office and get all this information themselves? Because we are like this onlyi) Pay CKGS $300 dollars. This is on the cKGS websitej) Pay CKGS $31.50 courier fees. This is $15.00 to send the documents to CKGS, and $15 for them to send the OCI card back to you. This is also on the CKGS websitek) CKGS will give you a payment reciept for you Print out the payment receipt for both things. CKGS will also give you a prepaid FedEx barcode. Print that outl) Go to the notary to signNow the documents. This is funny. As you might know, notaries signNow documents as “true copies”, which means that they are basically attesting that the copy is the same as the original. Depending on your jurisdiction, notaries are not allowed to signNow certain documents. For example, in Virginia, notaries cannot signNow birth certificates. What they can do is signNow a statement from you that says that you claim that the copy of the birth certificate is original. If your notary refuses to signNow a document, there is another form that you need to sign and get it signNowd.m) Make a neat packet from all the documents that you need to send to them. Go to fedex. Put the documents in the fedex envelope and give fedex the barcode and they will ship it to CKGS. Note that you are not sending originals yet. Why? Because you have a long way to go! LAso, remember the payment reciepts that you got from CKGS. You have to put the printouts of those payment reciepts in this packet. Where is this packet going? To CKGS. Where did you get the payment recipet from? CKGS. Why do you need to send the reciept back to CKGS instead of them simply looking up the transaction in their database? We are like this only.n) CKGS check the documents and send them to embassyo) Embassy will check the documents and send them to Delhip) Delhi will give their blessing and now you have entered the phase called the OCI Match Up phase. Yay!!! Until now, you were getting ready to apply for OCI. Now you are going to actually apply for OCIq) Go back to CKGS website to start the OCI match up process.r) Now there’ another checklist that says what you need to send them. The checklist lies. It says that you need to send them a Money Order. You don’t need to send them a Money Order. I spent 20 minutes on hold with the CKGS call center today to confirm this. This 20 minutes is my gift to yous) You will again pay for fed ex shipping like you did last time, and it will print out a pre-paid fedex envelope for you. Pay attention because apparently there is a button somewhere that you can use to tell them that you already paid them $15 for return courier when when you paid courier fees last time. I missed this button and paid $15 extra. Again $15 is my gift to you. As a lawyer, when has a client completely ignored your advice and paid the price?
To me, it seems like every single day of my life.I am the first to admit that I’m not a genius, (my IQ is only 134…) And I know when to say, “I have no idea whatsoever, and it would be stupid, yes, outright stupid for me to advise you on this.” I have said that many times through the years. But, I have practiced law for over 20 and have had a little bit of everything except patent law cross my desk.I’ve seen a child expelled from school for having brought a knife to school. Grandmother was allowed to have custody of the children while the parents were in rehab. Grandmother told me that she packs an apple in Johnny’s lunch with a kitchen knife so he can cut it. I told Grandma to not do that. Schools will see it as a deadly weapon these days. Children cannot even have a pocket knife to sharpen a pencil in school. I tell her to give Johnny a different fruit, or cut the apple at home. Grandma said, “But Johnny loves apples, and if I cut it at home it will get all brown by lunch.” So, I told her to save the dang apples for an after school snack, and don’t send the kid to school with a knife, let the kid bite into the apple. The schools don’t play. A week later I get a call from grandma and the social worker that Johnny was expelled from the entire school district for bringing a butcher knife to school in his lunch bag. Interesting, I could have sworn I told Grandma to not put a knife, let alone a butcher knife, in the child’s lunch bag. So guess who had to talk to the superintendent, show up to a meeting in a Brooks Brothers suit at the child’s school, and pursue legal actions to get her child client back in school. ME. Guess who was not happy. ME. But, guess who got her client back into school. ME.I had a friend who worked and made good money. She had a boyfriend who was a total loser, and couldn’t hold a job. She asked me if she could put him on her bank account so he could have money when he needed it, I said you legally can, but just because you can doesn’t mean you should. But, I continued, “If you’re hell bent on putting him on your bank account, I strongly suggest you open a separate account, and put a cap on how much you put in the account so when you break up, he won’t be able to financially destroy you. I would really advise against putting Dude on your account, but you’re a big girl, and you have to deal with and make your own decisions.”A month later, she wrote me a check for something, and the checks had his name on it. I didn’t say a word. A year later, she called me, crying and saying that “that SOB” broke up with her, and went to the bank and cleaned out their account which had thousands of dollars in it, that she saved so she could buy a house one day. I asked her if this was the only account she had. (Yes) What status did Dude have on the account? She said it was a joint account. She cried and cried saying she didn’t know what to do. I told her that because he was on the account as a joint holder, he had the legal right to clean it out, and because they never married, she can’t march it into family court to demand that the money be returned, so it can be categorized as a joint asset to be divided in a divorce settlement. Those two didn’t even live together. And… what did I tell her to do? Did she listen? NO. Is she sorry she didn’t listen? The response I got was “I was so happy when I put him on my account, but I can’t believe he would do this to me!” Would this have happened if she listened to me? You tell me…On the risk of writing a whole book on the subject, I’ll share one last anecdote.I have told my friends to never, ever lend out their credit to other people. If someone doesn’t have credit, or has poor credit, there’s a good reason, so don’t lend them your credit unless you’re willing to assume their debt. I have had friends tell me that their relative bought a car on her credit card which got totaled. The credit card company won’t relieve the debt of course, and now relative won’t make the payments. Relative says that because he doesn’t have the car anymore, he doesn’t need to make payments. The friend wants to know what she can do, because she can’t afford the credit card payments. The answer is, she is on the hook for that money, regardless of what happened to the car. She might try to get the insurance money if relative reports it, and use that to pay toward the credit card debt. 99.9% of the time, the car wasn’t insured, and Relative gets stuck with a $12,000.00 bill plus compounded interest. All that because she wouldn’t listen to me.I have another friend who has a 15 year old little brother who had fantasies of becoming a rock star. But, first, he needed to buy instruments, and learn how to play them. See where this is going? I told her to not lend her credit card to him. In fact, I told her that whatever she does, do not let her 15 year old brother use her credit card without her present, so she could put a leash on his spending, Little brother can’t get a job to make the payments and 15 year olds will run that card up to the limit, not fully comprehending that they have to pay it off, and how long it can take. She said, “OK.” Then one day she left her wallet out, and her little brother got ahold of her credit card. Next thing she knew, little brother has top of the line instruments, amplifiers, pedals, microphones, cords; everything a top notch rock group wished they had. Sally asked her brother how he got all the instruments. Little brother said, “I figured out a way.” Sally figured he got the money from their parents. THEN SHE GOT THE BILL. She asked me what she could do, and I told her she can call the music store, and explain the situation, and take everything back. (She didn’t want to do that.) Her next option was to advise the credit card issuer that there was an unauthorized user who spent a lot of money on it, and see what they can do. (She didn’t want to do that, because they might figure out it was her brother who used her card to buy everything, and she didn’t want her brother to get in trouble.) She wasn’t leaving me many options… So I said, “Well, you can always tell Dilbert he needs to make the money to pay the card off by mowing lawns, babysitting, or doing handyman work.” She thought that was a decent option. But there was a problem, rock stars don’t mow lawns, or change diapers, and high school students have so much homework that they can’t get it all done, practice their music, and get a job. The final option I gave her, is the one she actually did, that was to let little brother have his instruments, never leave the card where he can get it again, and make the payments herself so she doesn’t ruin her credit.She now pays $1300 a month on her credit card for a rock star set up that is now gathering dust in her parents’ garage. It was too hard to start a rock band so Dilbert decided to be a stuntman instead. Sally says she can’t sell the instruments because they aren’t hers, and Dilbert might get upset.That’s a huge price to pay because she heard me, but didn’t take my advice. I tried to warn her…I hear these kinds of stories all the time. I am always afraid that if I told them to do the opposite, maybe they wouldn’t have the problems I warned them against, because they always seem to do the exact opposite of what I advise. So if I advised them to do the exact opposite of what they should, and maybe they will be happy with the result. Or, with my luck, they’d follow my advice to a “T” and end up behind bars and I’d get sued for malpractice.

Let me shed some light on my learnings -Learn to say NO - Random seniors come and give you random work. Learn to say No. Learn to say you are busy. You are not a dustbin.Learn to say YES - You need to have a good rapport with your immediate seniors and your boss. I have filled my boss’s daughter’s BFM admission form because she needed some help. Sometimes, you have to keep your ego aside and look at the larger picture.Whether audit or tax is the one for you - You tend to spend 3 years in articleship, doing either audit or tax. It is good enough time to gauge whether you want to do this for your entire life or not. For me the answer was NO, and I switched to Finance. No point wasting time once you qualify.Domain Knowledge - In your first job interviews after becoming a CA, a lot of stress will be on what you did during these 3 years. You should be upto date with that. Get your basics right.Out time is a myth – As per my firm HR Manual, the official work time was roughly 10-30 to 6–30. Strangely, you used to be penalized for coming late, but no credit for going late. It’s the norm. Get used to it.Make Mistakes - Ask stupid questions. Make mistakes. Experiment. Because you have the license to. You are a fresher. As a CA, people expect more.Do not neglect your Social Life - Its important. Your boss will not come at 12 to your place with a cake in his hand, wishing you a happy birthday.I remember getting into a train during my 1st year articleship. I somehow started chatting with a guy standing near me. He was a CA. I told him I just cleared IPCC and started with articleship. He started laughing and said “Welcome to Hell”.With all the office and study pressure, you might feel life sucks during articleship, but it will be a great experience.
