Why are Chinese products cheaper?
In the words of Tim Cook: "The popular conception is that companies come to China because of low labor costs. I'm not sure what part of China they go to, but the truth is China stopped being the low labor cost country years ago. That is not the reason to come to China from a supply point of view, the reason is because of the skill."Let us look at the concept of labor or the involvement of labor in an every-day product. Let us compare 2 products: a plastic fork vs a plush toy. Although both products fall on opposite spectrums of the consumer life cycle (one disposable whilst the other one is reusable), both are sure to be made in China.A plastic fork is made from food-grade Polystyrene (PS) plastic pellets or beads through a process known as plastic inject molding. In here the pellets are heated in a molding machine to a viscous state and are injected into a mold. The mold produces multiple sets of forks within a matter of seconds and from there on it’s as simple as detaching the forks from a sacrificial (?) holder or tool (this is also made of PS and in most cases is recycled). From here the product is moved into packaging and then sent out of the factory for export. A fully automated machine can be set to run continuously 24 hours a day with very little monitoring by a worker, thus being a low labor product. Now, let us look at that plush toy. The stuffed animal is comprised of textile material for the cover, stuffing, two eyes and a nose. The material must be cut into pieces, sewn together and stuffed. The nose, eyes and mouth are sewn onto the material together and stuffed, requiring skilled labor(-). The cutting of the pieces may be done by hand or by machine, but the pieces are sewn together by a worker using a high-speed sewing machine. Next comes the insertion of stuffing – this is rather complex for a machine to do, as such the insertion is done by hand and the insertion point is also manually closed. It is evident that this requires much labor, therefore, this type of a product is considered a high labor product with labor contributing 70% of the total cost [1]. In the end, much like a fork, the product is moved and packaged for export.Because labor is only one part of the total cost of a product, and in many cases it's as low as 20% of the total cost, – this must indicate that there may be other factors at play in making Chinese products, such as the fork. If labor were the only factor, then most of the “plush toy/labor intensive” industries would have shifted to other countries – but only some industries already have e.g. Bangladesh, Vietnam and Mongolia to name just a few. To that extent, manufacturing of plastic forks could possibly return to the USA; but that’s not happening.Industrial production does not take place in isolation, but rather relies on networks of suppliers, component manufacturers, distributors, government agencies and customers who are all involved in the process of production through competition and cooperation. The ecosystem of doing business in China has evolved quite a lot in the last thirty years. Here are the additional factors, including labor, that affect the overall cost of manufacturing and thus make Chinese exports cheaper:A. Commendable supply chain: Supply chain activities transform natural resources, raw materials, and components into a finished product that is delivered to the end customer. No country, at present, has a supply chain more sophisticated yet flexible than China. China’s biggest advantage is their domestic availability of most of the raw materials required to manufacture a given product [2]. Not only are private entities involved in the process of outputting raw material for manufacturing. Rather, many Chinese State Owned Enterprises (SoEs) actively control and output raw materials for small factories to transform into ready-made goods. If the government is involved in such activities, it is safe to assume that this is an active industry that requires not only oversight and monitoring, but active involvement. Access to affordable raw materials helps bring down manufacturing costs to a considerable extent. As a result, having suppliers who are local to the manufacturer has gained importance as a way to cut costs[6].B. Rebate upon Export: The export tax rebate policy was initiated in 1985 by China as a way to boost the competitiveness of its exports by abolishing double taxation on exported goods[7]. China is one of over 150 countries that utilize a Value Added Tax (VAT) system. It is a tax only on the "value added" to a product, material, or service at every state of its manufacture or distribution. The VAT rate is generally 17%, or 13% for some goods. Chinese companies receive a VAT refund from the government for materials of products produced for export. Basically, factories that export do not pay any VAT on goods or raw materials used made for export – further subsidizing raw material costs. American imports to China are charged a VAT, but the U. S. doesn't have a VAT to charge Chinese imports. Moreover, Chinese manufacturers work with far lower profit margins than those in the U.S.C. Efficient Infrastructure and Logistical Access: In its fast-paced effort towards industrialization, China has built many ports (big and small), roads and railroad access. Such a system is not secluded to the big cities (Tier 1 or Tier 2 cities), it connects all of them, including Tier 4 cities or small towns used as industrial manufacturing zones. Having an efficient logistical system allows for cheaper travel costs –the cost of units (kilometers or miles) per currency (dollar or RMB) decreases. Also, an efficient infrastructure reduces overall downtime. Such is the case of India, as pointed out by Vaibhav Mandhana [3]: “Given the poor roads, a shipment from India's north can take a week or more to signNow India's south. Sometimes it is quicker and cheaper to actually get a shipment from Shenzhen than Kolkata. Time is money and all those delays add to your cost. If I could get something in two days, I could sell it immediately rather than wait two months to sell it [add up the interest costs]”"The road freight from LA to Nevada will cost you a lot more than the sea freight from China to LA."[5]D. Subsidized Utilities and Availability: Within China’s industrial areas many fixed and variable production costs are heavily subsidized. For example: electricity and water are subsidized up to 30% compared to normal household or commercial zones. Moreover, the local government gives support with land access at competitive rates, creating jobs in the area. This further helps to diminish the cost of the end product – after all you have access to cheaper land, water and light (What manufacturing does not require these? - Hell, even mining bitcoin does!). In non-industrialized or not fully industrialized countries (Indonesia, Vietnam, India), access to water and electricity remains a critical issue, until today. “In Coimbatore and other industrial places, you get power for like eight hours a day. That means the machinery lies idle for sixteen hours and that wasted capacity adds to the cost.”Do we see a trend of several factors, other than labor, which affect the overall cost of the product? Hold on, there are more!E. Bureaucracy: Barriers for entry in China, in this context, are extremely low. Although you need to fill out a huge number of papers (Customs Declaration Form, Land Annexation, Tax Filing, Compliance Related Documentation, Drawback/Rebate Forms, Annual Returns and etc.), the process is not complex. Relevant departments and accountability are there; you do not need to grease palms to get what you need; streamlined government policies are in place. Again, non-industrialized countries do not have many of these processes in place – they are in the early stages, whereas China has been through all this. I am not saying China is pure and not corrupt, there might be corruption in some cases, but the overall industrial process is so deeply rooted, that people just follow established guidelines. Greasing palms and running around places to get a stamp or a signature causes further delays (time is money) and increases overall costs. This is considered more as “Political Will” than bureaucracy; meaning the government’s will to allow you to do business is prominent thus reducing barriers for you to do business or manufacture or engage in services.F. Technology and Automation/ Skilled Labor: It would be unreasonable to discard China’s interconnectivity between technological advancement and manufacturing capacity. They work hand-in-hand. Availability of the latest technology to manufacture products of a high quality on a large scale. And let's be honest, scalability can be a very important factor in deciding price of a product. Apart from technology, China has a large population, thus having a bigger access to a wide talent pool. Availability to a greater talent pool decreases the overall demand as there is an oversupply – again, denting the costs of the product. If you recall, Tim Cook's main reason for manufacturing in China is: the depth of highly skilled labor in the manufacturing space. To rephrase what Cook said: "No other country in the world besides China has the combination of an electronic component supply chain and large pools of skilled labor needed to make iPhones on the scale which Apple needs."G. Labor: It is comparatively cheaper to many so-called “developed countries”. You can have someone do the same labor task for a comparatively lower price than say Europe or the USA for that matter. This further brings down costs. As noted before, it is not the cheapest – but it is not the most expensive either. What is important to remember here is that labor in China, is skilled – although most laborers are not trained, but have learned by doing. When you outsource to China, you’re working with time-tested factories that have been producing quality products in similar industries as yours for years on end, and in massive supply.Where a labor task might cost you $8-9 USD/hour in developed countries, it will cost you $450-500 USD for an entire month in China (8 hours a day, 28 days a month). If you do the math, that’s about $2.19 USD/hour. Countries like Indonesia a semi-skilled laborer will do it for half, $1.05 USD/hour – but the manufacturing process will be influenced by factors all the factors mentioned.H. Local Government: Local government officials are appointed, not elected. Part of their job is to help the industries and they are measured by results. Furthermore, locals compete with each other. That means Suzhou is competing with Chengdu to attract industries, and so on. Hence officials are always using their local advantages to help, attract, and grow industries, such as providing low cast land, building industrial parks, and making sure that the support infrastructure (roads, electricity, water, etc.) even local housing and schools are there. Since these officials are not elected locally, their actions are much more efficient rather than dealing a motion to go through town hall meetings or waiting for a ballot to pass for months. The downside of such efficiency could be that some environmental studies were not complete or many local concerns are not addressed fully (All credit for how to local governments operate within China go to Mr. James Yeh ).Here are few controversial factors, claimed by several sources:I. Currency: There is the ever-present theory of currency manipulation among economists, where China undervalues their currency by an estimated 30%-40%, which simply makes every product that China ships out 30-40% cheaper than those of a potential American competitor. The Yuan is manipulated and pegged undervalued to the US dollar [2]. So the price quoted in US dollars( more exports are quoted in dollars), will be cheaper than normal; (This manipulation has affected the domestic price of the product and labor wages as it has been kept much lower than it should have been. The Chinese yuan has, however, been steadily increasing in value against the dollar over the past few years.J. Compliance: The Chinese government does not bind itself with Intellectual Property issues. They allow the industry to investigate the products developed successfully elsewhere in the world. They then produce them in large quantities. Personally, there is nothing wrong in this benchmarking. Most industries do benchmark; especially in the automotive world. This saved the industry from expensive investments in R&D [4]. Although China has its own environmental protection agency, the environmental protection laws are generally lax and not enforced fully, especially at the local level. In previous years, Chinese factories cut down on waste management costs -further bringing down overall product costs. Things have been different lately, thanks to the strong efforts from the national government. Laws on IP and environmental protection are being enforced, especially after the Hangzhou G20 summit. There is still some belief that more needs to be done.If cheap labor was in itself the key driving factor, a large percentage of the labor-intensive factories would have already shifted to cheaper labor countries and lower labor-intensive jobs would have returned to the countries such as the USA - because China is not the synonym for cheap labor anymore. But that's not what we are experiencing; only certain jobs within the manufacturing field are moving to South East Asia. A huge chunk is there and is still able to reap the benefits of various factors. It will take more than a cutthroat desire for emerging economies to set up a business ecosystem that can compete with China's.Wow now over 1,000 Thanks for your upvotes! What do Americans hate about Europe when they go visit?
This is not an “answer” but an analysis of the range of answers given. “Hate” is an exaggeration as the factors forwarded are merely annoyances or unexpected differences; readers from less developed nations would label the laments as “Rich Country Concerns” (i.e. petty for most people). My answer is based on decades of life and travel in Western Europe - not Eastern Europe. The major gripes are that things are not as “convenient”, dimensions are small, people are “unfriendly” and the customer is not “always right” in Europe. Let’s see if those “complaints” are worth writing home about or if ...

What is your most bizarre airport experience?
I have worked for an airline at LAX for the last 6 years. Bizarre doesn’t even begin to describe some of the people and situations I’ve witnessed. I could list hundreds of examples but I don’t want to scare you away from flying altogether, so here are just a few.I was working the front desk at our airline lounge one afternoon when a guest walked in and asked to purchase a day pass. She was a thin, 40-something brunette, about average height, sporting thick-rimmed glasses and a pixie cut. At first glance, nothing seemed out of the ordinary. As I went through the process of selling her the pass, she started telling me about her day which turned into vague stories about her life. I kept having to pause and look up at her because I couldn’t follow what she was saying. She spoke rapidly and rambled about unrelated topics, jumping from one to the next. I attributed her behavior to airport stress and politely nodded and smiled (as one does when they work in customer service and are privy to many a life story). I handed her the receipt and welcomed her to the lounge, pointing in the direction of the main seating area. After she settled in, she approached the desk once more to ask about the amenities and we spoke again. I don’t remember what was said because my co-worker had distracted me during the conversation. He gave me an eyes wide open, brows raised look followed by a “why are you still talking to this woman” nudge because he noticed she was acting a bit erratically. I responded to him with an eyes wide open, brows raised look of my own followed by a “she’s nice and probably just anxious about traveling so don’t be mean” smile. “Whatever, I’m going on break.” He laughed. “Good luck.”She noticed none of this, as she was pacing from the desk to the door and back to the desk while looking at the ceiling and chattering about on the way back to her seat.Shortly after, a police officer entered. He showed me his badge and stated he was looking for a woman by my new friend’s first and last name. I informed him that she was there and led him to her seat in the center of the lounge where thirty or so other passengers started looking on curiously. The police officer spoke with her, asking basic questions such as her name and travel plans. He stepped outside the lounge for a moment and shortly returned with three more police officers. They advised me to cancel and refund her ticket, as she would “no longer be flying”. Minutes later, a handful of paramedics and firemen appeared with a stretcher.“What is going on?” I asked.“She escaped from a mental institution this morning.” The officer beside me said in a low voice. “Her husband reported her missing and we traced her here through his credit card charges.”My eyes widened.“Yeah.” He nodded in agreement. After consulting with my manager, I led them to a private room within the lounge so they could escort her without a peering audience. As they walked her there, she began knowingly screaming, “Please don’t take me back, please!” It took two men to cuff her to the stretcher while the others tried to calm her down but she resisted, sitting up and continuing to cry out, “Please it’s not true! My husband put me there, whatever he told you it’s not true! Don’t make me go back!” She began to swear in her proceeding cries for help. The medics injected her with a needle and her shouts diminished to whimpers. I stood frozen as she looked at me, eyes pleading, and begged “Don’t let them take me” before surrendering onto her back. My mind raced as rapidly as she had spoken when she first entered the lounge. What if she really didn’t belong there? What if it is a conspiracy? She didn’t seem like she needed to be in a mental institution, after all she’d made it this far on her own… But what if everything they are saying is true? Maybe her husband really is just trying to help her... Can I do anything either way? I knew that the answer was no and gazed down helplessly. They led her out through the room’s private exit as I proceeded to apologize to the other guests in the lounge, purposely avoiding direct eye contact and mumbling something about how I couldn’t give them any other information but that they had nothing to worry about. I went back to my desk. As I canceled her ticket, my co-worker returned. “Did I miss anything?”…I kid you not.Second story is short and “sharp”! I worked out of Logan Airport in Boston for a year before transferring to LAX. Our ticket counter there was directly adjacent to TSA, so we saw everything. One time an elderly passenger was going through with his cane when TSA discovered a sword inside of it. Yes, a sword. He claimed he had no prior knowledge…Last but definitely not least, we had a woman fly from Seattle to Los Angeles with her “emotional support” turkey. It is banned now but at the time there was no written policy that specifically forbade it. I will leave you with this photo, which speaks (or gobbles) for itself:EDIT: This was my first Quora post and I was not expecting many people to read it, but thank you for the views and upvotes! Here are two bonus stories that occurred when I was working recently for anyone who is interested in the bizarre and shocking goings-on of an Airport Baggage Claim. My friend was opening the baggage office at 5am when she heard a loud thud. Random noises are not uncommon at LAX, but the Arrivals area at 5am is generally quiet. She walked over to the baggage carousel to investigate the sound and saw a man lying on the floor covered in dust and pieces of plaster. She looked up and saw a giant hole in the ceiling. This man literally fell through the ceiling. Police officers were called and upon further investigation they found blankets, toothpaste, shaving cream, and other amenities up there. Some of you may remember this story from the news, but they found out he had been living in the ceiling above the baggage carousel for months, rent-free!A white-haired man with a salt and pepper beard and thick black trench-coat was pacing frantically and swearing to himself by our LAX baggage carousel one afternoon. I walked into the baggage office and asked my co-worker Lauren* (not her real name) what his deal was. She said he was angry that his bag did not arrive with his flight. She had been trying to get information from him for 20 minutes so she could locate it but he just kept walking into the office, cursing the airline for losing his bag, storming out and looping around the non-moving baggage carousel as if expecting his suitcase to magically appear with each completed lap.I spoke firmly to Roger* (also not his real name) saying we could not help him without any info as to who he was, where he flew from, or his bag tag number. He threw his boarding pass and baggage claim ticket in our faces and escalated his anti-airline rant “I will never fly ever again! Never! I’m taking the Greyhound next time!” to an anti-America rant “This [BLEEP] COUNTRY! I hate this country!” and then listing off the many ways in which he felt wronged by the government, no longer referencing air travel at all. I glanced at Lauren who mouthed, “this guy is loco” and we immediately began the search for his bag to rid ourselves of his presence.I pulled up the bag history and saw that his bag was scanned in LAX just 30 minutes prior. Temporary relief filled our lungs until we realized that it was mis-tagged as a transfer to Honolulu, Hawaii and loaded onto that connecting flight.“Great!” Lauren stated. “We can just have the ramp team pull the bag.”Not great. The flight had left just 5 minutes prior, so the bag was already en route to Honolulu. Had he cooperated from the beginning, we could have discovered this immediately and reunited him with his bag before the flight departed. Of course since the redirect wasn’t his fault (the agent in his origin city incorrectly tagged the bag to Hawaii under a similar passenger’s last name - always do a visual check of your luggage tags before they get sent away!) we advised him that he would be compensated, his bag would be sent back to LAX ASAP, and we would set up delivery to his address upon receipt. He would have it by the evening. He fumed.“DO YOU KNOW WHAT’S IN THAT BAG? DO YOU?” We stared at him blankly as he shook his index finger in our faces. “MY ROCKS!”Lauren and I looked at each other, both at a loss for words. He continued. “THEY ARE THE MOST VALUABLE ROCKS IN THE WORLD!”We repeated that we would call the supervisor in Hawaii directly to personally ensure that the bag was placed on the return flight.“AND WHAT IF THE PLANE CRASHES, HUH? WHAT THEN?” Our office was getting smaller by the second. “IF THAT [BLEEP] PLANE GOES DOWN AND EVERYONE ON IT DIES, THEIR [BLEEP] LIVES COMBINED ARE NOT AS VALUABLE AS MY ROCKS! HOW WILL YOU GET MY ROCKS TO ME THEN?”We readied ourselves to call airport police, worried he may become as violent as his speech, when his younger, long-haired colleague appeared by his side.“What’s going on Rog’?” He wore flip-flops in December and spoke as he chewed on gum.“These [bleep] lost my rocks! My bag went to [bleep] Hawaii!”His friend paused for a moment, a smile forming on his lips.“That’s excellent news.” He remarked to our surprise. Roger (can I call him Rog’ too?), stared at him dumbfounded. He continued slowly and in a soft voice, “The rocks were meant to go to Hawaii. They needed to touch down on Hawaiian soil.” His smile was fully formed by now. “Remember the curse? This is the chance we’ve been waiting for to finally lift it. After all these years! This is excellent, just excellent.” He sputtered gleefully.Lauren and I took turns hiding from these two in the back office.Roger had calmed down, but only in a calm-before-the-storm type way. He dug through his hand bag, pulling out a smooth and glossy brown stone, no larger than the size of the circle formed by touching your thumb to your forefinger. His voice rose again.“SEE THIS ROCK? SEE? THIS IS ONE OF THEM.” He waved it in front of our faces. We weren’t trying to get fired, so we didn’t say anything back to him. Our lack of a reaction must have upset him because he proceeded to lunge his arm backwards and lurch it forwards, throwing the Most Valuable Rock In The World at the wall and missing my face by inches. His priceless stone became chipped upon impact and fell to the floor. We 100% should have called the police, but we stood there in stunned silence and let our supervisor with perfect timing handle him. She spoke to them coolly and finally got them to leave. He left his precious rock behind as Flip-Flops told us we could keep it before skipping out the door behind him.I plastered a smile on my face and waved to good ol’ Rog’ on their way out, calling after him deviously, “Aloha!”We breathed the Most Satisfying Sigh of Relief In The World and laughed as Lauren speculated that he must have grave-robbed ancient stones from King Tut. She joked that when the bag did arrive, we should grab an entire roll of fragile stickers and wrap up every last magical rock with them as well as the entire outside of the bag before sending it out for delivery.I discarded my present shortly after finding no evidence of the supernatural, thereby deeming it the Most Overrated Rock In The World while contemplating new career choices.

Should we stop teaching kids cursive?
Children have a limited ability to cram new information in their heads daily. That is also complicated by the other types of information we cram into their heads. Furthermore, the types of information we cram into their heads are dictated by the daily pressures we experience in our lives and the expected necessity of that information down the road.Every generation that walks on this Earth sees a thing they either cherish innately or cherish because they had to work for it wither and die in front of them. This is the nature of existing. When I was in the 8th Grade, my school added a new wing. I was chosen because of my artistic ability to be a part of a team that created ceramic tiles with designs on them that would go on the walls. We were given a month (and extra time in the day) to make these tiles. They were painted, glazed and fired. The tiles went up and remained there for some … oh … a few decades. Feels just like yesterday, my alien monster tiles were given the thumbs-up and cemented to the walls. Two years ago, that same school had to tear that wall down and put a new addition on to the building. Because I am (from childhood) friends with a lady who works there, with whom I discussed my tiles (my signature were on my dozen or so that were put up), she told me, “Dan, they’re tearing down that wall. They’re not saving the tiles.” My response, ”Ahhh. Well, there it goes!” and didn’t give it much thought beyond that. I’m not a [colloquial] nihilist†, just that I respect that all things have their time and then die. As a grown up, I simply know that my artistry was never going to last forever. Whether 20 years or 20,000, that wall was gonna come down and take my tiles with it.When my dad was a child, he went to a very small school and walked to it daily (and it really was about a mile or so from the house). They cut through the woods. He and his brothers wore legit buck knives to school and kept it on their person through class. They also brought their BB guns to school. They took hunting classes in school and learned cursive. Then things changed. When was the last time you saw a 4th grade show up with a giant “Crocodile Dundee” buck knife or bring in a BB gun for “show and tell”? HAH! Not in my lifetime!Today, the most pressing skills kids need to learn revolve around the basics that have been around for milennia (reading, writing and mathematics), then computer skills. I work in recruiting and I’ve been to basically every frigging conference on the matter, I do high school college/career counseling frequently, I write resumes for friends and family and I have gone to more school board meetings (by invitation) to talk to those very boards about the changing nature of work and how they simply MUST respond to those pressures or their children will be forever left behind by the world. Those pressures plus the very real limit placed on children (hours in the day, max-cap in learning potential in a day, etc.), whatever we add to children comes at the expense of something else. When educators take a look at the classroom schedule, they must make peace with reality. YES, I’ve heard all the silly arguments from fossils fretting about kids not learning cursive and I remind them that they value it because THEY KNOW IT and they had their knuckles smacked and invested time in learning it. It is agonizing for us —emotionally— to see this thing we know and value tossed into the figurative fire pile and burned in front of our very eyes. The world where cursive is needed is dying quickly. There will never be a time when a kid doesn’t have an electronic device with them in class or at work. And yes, Doomsday Preppers, your bullshit hypotheses won’t matter either. If the apocalypse happens, then I submit that needing to write fast (for which cursive was invented) won’t matter and we’ll do what the Romans did (which I do): just print the damned message (in caps!). Even then, a world where all the computers suddenly go, most of us will be dead anyway.Cursive may be pretty. But it’s no longer at the top of the list. Basic writing and reading, mathematics, history and of course, computers. That is what kids need. When I talk with employers and when I’ve been to board meetings, I implore them to make peace with this fact and —to quote a retail axiom— “Major in the majors”.†”Colloquial” as in, the kind of nihilist people throw around as a pejorative (“YOU don’t care about anything!”) as opposed to a philosophical nihilist.

What is it like to have ADD or ADHD?
Wow. So many awesome answers. I share much of what has already been described:* Brighter than almost everyone around me* Learn new things incredibly fast when engaged* See deeply into problems--develop an abstract understanding of a new area so much faster than others* Very, very good at anticipating problems and making a plan. Very, very bad at executing against it.* Terribly easily distracted, always starting and abandoning projects* Information junky LOVE to learn new things* Incredibly verbal and charming when I want to be. Witty and funny.* Viciously self-critical and sometimes viciously critical of others* Hate to wait, always late, procrastinate.* Finish people's sentences for them* Only care about getting the information I need. Please don't tell me why that task isn't done. I don't care. I asked a yes or no question: Is it done? * Being mistaken for a dick because my irritation over delay and distraction is mistaken for judgment about another's behavior or their output.* C student in high school, didn't graduate college. Sometimes spent more time helping others with their homework than doing my own.* Hated to attend lecture. The information came too slowly. Detested listening to others ask questions of the teacher. Why are they so stupid? This is a waste of my time. Learned on my own time in my own way.* Undisciplined about health. Don't take care of my health for years at a time. Then flip-flop to hyperfocused. Eat carefully, exercise every day, drop 40 pounds or more, then peter out and back to sloth.* No self-control around foods. Can't eat one cookie. The only way I can eat better is to not have the cookies around.* Tried drugs as a teenager but didn't like them. I literally didn't get what others thought was exciting about being drunk or stoned. Would 100X rather waste time reading a fascinating history book or playing a strategy game than feel impaired.* TV calms me if it is engaging. Enrages me when it isn't. Commercials usually make me want to tear my eyes out. Poorly written comedy makes me want to kill somebody. I can more-or-less only watch PBS and cable TV because the programs are commercial free. Documentaries are the BOMB. Who knew earth worms were so fascinating? And I feel so much calmer while I watch...* Radio calms me if it is engaging, Enrages me when it isn't. The increased volume of radio commercials and makes me want to firebomb car dealers and other radio advertisers. I am engaged only when I get a constant stream of just the right music or engaging information from people I respect. I can pretty much only listen to PBS and internet radio today.* Movies often bore me, unless they hit the right psychological note. Can't stand to watch shoot-em-ups, blow-em-ups, superpower-them-ups, hack-em-ups. Have to watch movies that show me nuance and psychological realities. When I do have to watch silly movies with my children, have to analyze the symbolism to death. * Always felt different. Always knew there was something wrong with me. Always felt lonely. Couldn't put my finger on the problem with me.* Couldn't achieve my potential. Couldn't even come close.* Verbally Impulsive. Have great trouble concealing a negative emotional reaction.* Will freely express a negative opinion of an idea. Can't understand why that would bother the other person. After all, I was only trying to help improve the idea... * Am not strongly attached to my own ideas. They come and go fast anyways. If you shoot it down, I'll go back to the drawing board and comeback with another.* Consistently underestimate the time I need to complete tasks. The only real thing I can add to what others have written is the depression and self-doubt. If you allow it to get to you, it can be so demoralizing to lose your wallet, phone or keys every morning. To once again leave the house without remembering that form you were supposed to return to the kids school. It sucks to constantly feel you are disappointing others. It sucks to feel you don't know how to love other people because your attention wanders the moment their needs don't require your focused attention. It sucks to know you set a bad example for your children. It sucks to know in the moment you are becoming obsessed over something inconsequential and have pursued it far beyond the point of behaving productively. It sucks to feel that you are self-centered because your need to have your anxiety reassured is so important you often can't suspend it when you should.ADD is the best of times and the worst of times. Sometimes I feel so powerful because it is so easy to put that blowhard in his place by pointing out the myriad flaws in his argument. Sometimes I feel so self-confident because I don't give a fuck what people think of me so I can say what I want. Sometimes I feel so awesome because I can do things with my brain others find incredible. Sometimes I feel hopeless because I can't get up off the couch to do the simple things that must get done today.

How has Surya Namaskar benefitted you?
I am a Practitioner of Surya Namaskar for the past several decades. I have been practicing Surya Namaskar from my childhood, though without understanding any deeper significance of the same. I am writing this note from my personal experience. I can confidently vouch for the immense benefits of Surya Namaskar.During childhood and early part of life, I used to do it as part of our Sanskar. We had a religious attitude towards this practice. In India, in many households, a child is taught to practice Surya Namaskar as an essential part of his daily routine. We used to consider it as a particular form of Surya worship with bonus benefits of the good health and memory gain.Surya Namaskar literally means salutation to the Sun. Sun is considered as a symbol of the Soul of the Universe and Source of Life.By Surya Namaskar we are evoking the physical, mental and spiritual energies which are latent in us by vividly visualizing the external Sun in physical form as well as in our mind and activating our inner energy field through an esoteric principal of correspondence. The hermetic maxim “As above, so below; as below so above” well explains this principle. This esoteric principle embodies the truth that there is always a Correspondence between the laws and phenomena of the various planes of Being and Life. It gives us a way of solving many a dark paradox, and hidden secrets of Nature. We need to understand that there are planes beyond our knowing. When we apply the Principle of Correspondence to them we are able to understand much that would otherwise be unknowable to us. This Principle is of universal application and manifestation. It is applicable on the various planes of the material, mental, and spiritual universe. It is a Universal Law. Our ancient spiritual scientists (Rishi) have discovered this principle and applied it by designing various rituals and kriyas. Surya Namaskar is one such example. After reading about it in books and later on through online sources, I came to know about the immense interest it has generated in scientific community and general population world over. I have discovered that Surya Namaskar is a ‘SMART POWER CAPSULE’ of Yoga, Psychology and Esoteric Science. We can call it Ashtanga Yoga – Yoga having eightfold aspects – sort of. In this fast paced world with paucity of quality time, it offers immense benefits packed in just 10 minutes of practice. Therefore it perfectly ‘fits’ into our tight schedule. In this note, I will not dwell on the historical origin and religious aspect of this practice. Curious reader can refer to the source material given at the end for quenching his thirst. Instead, let us focus on the direct benefits Surya Namaskar offers to us in our Life.Let me clarify some mis-conceptions about Surya Namaskar.1 Surya Namaskar is neither restricted to the Hindu religion alone, nor it is completely a-religious practice. It is a Supra-Religious practice. By the term ‘Supra-Religious’ I mean it is a religious practice which is not restricted just to the confines of Hindu religion. It is religious practice of the whole humanity. Persons of all faith – Hindu, Christian, Jews, Islam – can practice this Kriya as a part of Universal Religion of Humanity. I will explain how.2 Surya Namaskar is not just a ‘physical posture’ – Asana. It is that and much more. It is a sort of Kriya Yoga.3 Surya Namaskar is not just an activity impacting our physical body. It involves our mental processes as well as having spiritual aspects. Surya Namaskar helps in rapidly accelerating spiritual development and engendering a profound state of tranquility and God-communion.4 The Mantra to be chanted while performing Surya Namaskar are an essential part of the whole Kriya for getting best results. One can however translate it into his own language.Occult SecretThe occult secret of the Surya Namaskar is the most important aspect of this whole process, which if followed meticulously and scientifically will result in tremendous benefits surpassing all the other benefits.Let us take an example of mobile phone. We have three ingredients in its functioning :1 The hard wired electronic gadget2 Electricity to make it function3 Wireless Frequencies to signNow out4 Internet Portals to get activated and respond to our messages5 Human being to signNow out to other person and communicate with him, to signNow online sources like Quora and receive useful knowledgeSurya Namaskar works in a similar manner1 We have yogic postures which are similar to the electronic gadget2 We have specific breathing techniques to make this occult principle work. To VIVIFY this instrument, to enliven it, to animate it.3 We have special evocative mantra to be chanted while doing the physical posture of Surya Namaskar. These Mantras are of specific vibrations which set in motion occult principles of action4 We have various types and degrees of Occult Powers in the Higher Planes of Universe. These are like Internet Portals.5 We have an emotional, conscious and living human being who signNow out these powers and invoke their potentialities into his being. This he does by consciously living in the meaning of these mantras and their corresponding emotional states as is explained in the note that follows. This is the most important and crucial part. Without this part, Surya Namaskar will become a mechanical process without the real cream of the benefit. We need to meditate on the meaning of the Mantra and its esoteric meaning while doing its respective physical posture. All the five elements mentioned above has to be performed in a very precise and ‘fully involved’ manner. Our body, mind and spirit must be fully absorbed in this process. As a final culmination, at its apex level, we signNow out the source of all life and energy and abundance in this universe, the highest authority, the President of our Universe - Surya. At this stage we enliven the Spiritual Sun in our inner being as a direct reflection of the Sun in the Universe.Health benefits of Surya YogaIt has signNow effects on the respiratory, cardiovascular, cardiorespiratory and autonomic nervous systems. It positively impacts on respiratory muscle activity, ventilation efficiency, chemoreflex and baroreflex sensitivity, heart rate variability, blood flow dynamics, respiratory sinus arrhythmia, cardiorespiratory coupling, and sympathovagal balance.Surya Namaskar has a close association with endocrine system of our body through Chakra. Out Endocrine System plays a vital role in our health and well being. It is part of the biological control mechanism. It comprises of a number of ductless glands that produce the hormones, acting as chemical messengers, that are secreted into the bloodstream from particular organs to stimulate or inhibit physical processes. By adjusting the hormone levels, the endocrine system works to maintain the body in a state of optimum health.Chakra SystemThe Chakras are linked with the glands responsible for creating the hormones. Tthe positions of the Chakras correspond to the positions of the glands in the endocrine system and have an effect on their functioning. We need to keep a balance in our emotional and mental state. In today’s stressful lifestyle, stress is a main culprit in much of our ill health and immune system. The stress affects our energy field which in-turn affects the Chakra. This imbalance of Chakras disturbs the perfect synchronization of interior and exterior rhythms of human energy field and universal energy field. The practice of Surya Namaskar not only restores this balance, it also re-energize our Chakra. Our physical body is a mammoth reservoir of energy field. Much of this energy is remaining latent, unexplored, unused. A continuous energy exchange takes place between the environment and the human body. Chakras are ‘transponder gadget’ for metaphysical and biophysical energy of the human body. Through the practice of Surya Namaskar, we activate these Chakra (I am using the word ‘Chakra’ in singular as well as in plural form. I feel that the common practice of its plural form ‘Chakras’ is wrong) and open them.Esoteric Aspects of Surya NamaskarEvery position and action in Surya Namaskar has its esoteric interpretation which reveal deeper significance of spiritual universe.Samasthiti AsanaWe start with Samasthiti Asana. It gives us a sense of balance as the Sanskrit name signifies.Anjali MudraWe then pay homage to the Cosmic Consciousness with Anjali Mudra. We seek its blessings and evoke it to descend and be planted in human wombHasthpadasanaOur hands and feet are our main organs of work and execution (karmendriya). By touching the earth by our hand we signify that I have taken birth on the Earth to fulfill my karmic debt.PrasarithautanasanaAs a soul in fetus remembers his previous births and makes promise to Lord, I look up at the Celestial Beings and reinforce my journey in this life on Earth. When I stretch my neck, I signify that I confirm my faith in my evolution.Chaturdhandasanasignifies 4 pillars of life – Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha. It is also four stages of my life – Ashrama – Brahmacharya, Grahastha, Vanaprastha and at the end Sanyasa.KokilasanaI go the vicissitudes of life easily and happily with the lightness of a bird.MeruasanaI am firmly rooted in life with the strength and stability of a mountain.Mukha BhastrikaAs with deep breathing I clean my lungs from dirt, all my past Karma is also cleansed.Prasarita UttanasanaI am now filled with a sense of gratitude. I am now looking at all the pervading space of Shiva and reinforce my evolutionary journey. Like my position in the Prasarita Uttanasana, I am stretched from life to death. Just as my body is half erect, I am midway between life and death.Hasthpadasana –Getting back to Hasthpadasana, I again pay my respect to the mother Earth. My physical body is an integral part of the mother Earth.Anjali MudraI am now paying my homage to the Supreme Consciousness.Samasthithi Asana –I am now getting to an elevated state of balanceMy salutations to Sun who is my Guru. May he dawn in me the wisdom of ages.Sanskrit Mantra to be chanted and their esoteric significance1. ॐ मित्राय नमः। Om Hram mitraya namaha Salutations to the Friend of all. Sun is my Friend. He is there to help me and support me and remove my loneliness in the world. He is the source of all life. The first position, pranamasana, embodies the attitude of reverence to the source of all life. The sun is regarded as the universal friend, endlessly giving light, heat and energy to support this and all the other planets.2. ॐ रवये नमः। Om Hrim ravaye namaha Salutations to the Shining One. He brings light in my life and show me path towards my mission in a shining light. Ravaye means one who shines and offers divine blessings upon all life. In the second position, hasta utthanasana, we stretch our whole being upwards towards the source of light to receive these blessings.3. ॐ सूर्याय नमः। Om hroom suryaya namaha Salutations to One who induces activity. He brings me energy and helps me in moving on my Path full of enthusiasm and passion. Here the deity Surya is saluted who represents the sun’s dynamic aspect. In ancient vedic mythology Surya was worshipped as the Lord of the Heavens, pictured crossing the sky in his fiery chariot, drawn by seven horses. This is a beautiful analogy interpreting the seven horses as seven rays or emanation of the supreme consciousness, which manifests as the seven planes of existence: blu (earthly, material), bhuvar (intermediate, astral), suwar (subtle, heavenly), mahar (the abode of the devas), janah (the abode of divine souls who have transcended ego), tapah (the abode of enlightened siddhas) and satyam (the ultimate truth of reality). Surya symbolizes the supreme consciousness itself, which controls all these planes of manifestation. Surya is regarded as the most concrete of the solar gods, one of the original vedic triad - his place being in the sky - while Agni (fire) is his representative on earth.4. ॐ भानवे नमः। Om hraim bhanave namaha Salutations to the One who illumines. He illumines my inner world and removes darkness of ignorance from my heart. The sun is the physical representation of the guru or teacher who removes the darkness of our delusions, just as the darkness of the night is removed with every dawn. In the fourth position, ashwa sanchalanasana, we turn our face towards this illumination and pray for an end to the dark night of ignorance.5. ॐ खगाय नमः। Om hraum khagaya namaha Salutations to the One who moves swiftly. He is my charioteer and enables me to move quickly towards my goal. It is the sun’s daily movement through the sky which is the basis of our measurement of time, from the earliest use of a sun dial to the sophisticated devices used today. In parvatasana, we offer obeisances to the one by whom time is measured and pray for progress in life.6. ॐ पुषणे नमः। Om hraha pushne namaha Salutations to the Giver of Strength and Nourishment. He gives me vitality and force which is ever increasing. He keeps me in good health. The sun is the source of all strength. He nourishes us with energy, light and life. We offer respects in ashtanga namaskara by touching all the eight corners of our body to the ground. In essence we are offering our whole being in the hope that he may bestow mental, physical and spiritual strength and nourishment upon us.7. ॐ हिरण्यगर्भाय नमः। Om Hram hiranya garbhaya namaha Salutations to the Golden Cosmic Self. He brings me wealth and prosperity. I get reborn into the womb of gold. Hiranyagarbha is also known as the golden egg, resplendent as the sun, in which Brahma was born as the manifestation of Self-existence. Hiranyagarbha is the seed of causality, thus the whole universe is contained within Hiranyagarbha in the potential state prior to manifestation. In the same way, all life is potential in the sun, which represents the great cosmic principle. We offer respects to the sun in bhujangasana, the seventh position, pyaying for the awakening of creativity.8. ॐ मरीचये नमः। Om Hrim mareechaya namaha Salutations to the Lord of Dawn. He brings new hope in the darkness of my mind. He inspires me for the bright days ahead. Maricha is the name of one of Brahma’s sons. Similarly, rays of light are produced from the sun. It also means mirage. In our whole life we seek after a true meaning or purpose. We are like a thirsty person who seeks water in a desert but is fooled by mirages dancing on the horizon, produced by the sun’s rays. In the eighth position, parvatasana, we pray to distinguish between the real and the unreal.9. ॐ आदित्याय नमः। Om hroom adityaya namaha Salutations to Son of Aditi, the Infinite Cosmic Mother. Aditi is the mother of the Gods. She is also the mother of all twelve zodiacal spirits from whose cosmic matrix the heavenly bodies were born. As celestial mother of every existing form and being, the synthesis of all things, she is associated with space (Akasa) and with the mystic speech (Vac). She is also seen as a feminized form of Brahma and associated with the primal substance (mulaprakriti).10. ॐ सवित्रे नमः। Om hraim savitre namaha Salutations to the Lord of Creation. Savitre is known as the stimulator; the arouser.. He also also represents the same posture, padahastasana. Savitre is said to represent the sun before rising, stimulating and arousing man into waking activity, and Surya is said to represent the sun after sunrise, which activity begins. Therefore, in the tenth position, padahastasana, we salute Savitre to obtain the vivifying power of the sun.11. ॐ अर्काय नमः। Om hraum arkaya namaha Salutations to the One who is Praiseworthy. Arka also means “energy”. The sun is the source of most of the energy in the world we know. In the eleventh position, hasta utthanasana, we are offering respects to this source of life and energy.12. ॐ भास्कराय नमः। Om hraha bhaskaraya namaha Salutations to the One who leads to Enlightenment. In this final salutation we offer respects to the sun as a symbol of the great revealer of all transcendental and spiritual truth. He lights up the pathway leading to our ultimate goal of liberation. In the twelfth position, pranamasana, we pray that this pathway may be revealed to us.As you might have noticed, I have omitted the Bija Mantra in Sanskrit Script from above Sanskrit Mantra for the sake of avoidance of mis-pronouncing the same.13. ॐ श्रीसवित्रसूर्यनारायणाय नमः। Om Shri Savitur Suryanarayanaya Namah At the end of these 12 positions a thirteenth mantra is recited 'Om Shri Savitur Suryanarayanaya Namah'. This is a sort of concluding Mantra. It is a comprehensive Mantra of all the above 12 Mantra. We conclude this process by a master mantra as॥ आदित्यस्य नमस्कारन् ये कुर्वन्ति दिने दिने आयुः प्रज्ञा बलम् वीर्यम् तेजस्तेशान् च जायते ॥It means “Those who perform Surya Namaskar daily enjoy abundance, long life, intelligence, strength, valour, good health and shining glory”Physical Postures and their health benefitsPosture 1 The first posture is Pranamasana This posture stimulates the respiratory system, exercises shoulder, back and neck muscles.Posture 2 The second posture is Hasta Utthanasana This posture promotes digestion, exercises arms and shoulder muscles, tones the spine and promotes flexibility of the back and hips.Posture 3 The third posture is Padahastasana This posture promotes blood circulation, tones abdominal tracts, stretches the back and leg muscles, stimulates spinal nerves and lymphatic system.Posture 4 The fourth posture is Ashwa Sanchalanasana This posture exercises the spine, strengthens hand and wrist muscles.Posture 5 The 5th posture is Parvatasana This posture Stimulates blood circulation, strengthens the heart, strengthens wrist and arm muscles, relieves neck and shoulder tension.Posture 6 The sixth posture is Ashtanga Namaskaara This posture Strengthens leg and arm muscles, increases flexibility in neck and shoulders, stretches arms, shoulder, neck and back muscles, exercises back muscles, releases tension in neck and shoulder.Posture 7 The seventh posture is Bhujangasana This posture Stimulates circulation to abdominal organs, tones digestive tract, stretches upper and lower body, promotes flexibility in the back, stimulates nerves in Lower the buttocks and hips.Posture 8 The 8th Posture is Parvatasana The benefits are the same as posture 5.Posture 9 The posture 9 is ashwa sanchalanasana The benefits are the same as posture 4.Posture 10 The posture 10 is Padahastana and the benefits are the same as posture 3.Posture 11 Posture 11 is Hasta Utthanasana and the benefits of this asana are the same as posture 2.Posture 12 Posture 12 is Pranamasana and the benefits are the same as posture 1.Tantra in Surya Namaskar - Bija MantraIn Vedic tradition, “Bija Mantra” are used as tools for the expansion and widening of one’s mind by utilizing the power of sound vibrations. “Mantra” is a Sanskrit word made up of two syllables: “man” (mind) and “tra” (liberate). Thus in its most literal translation the word “Mantra” means “to liberate one’s mind”. In Sanskrit a “seed” is called “Bija.” The word “Mantra” when translated by virtue of its practical use relates to a sound that can “create transformation.”Certain sounds which cannot be translated into a literal meaning but have the power to create great transformative growth and expansion in humans at the physical, emotional and spiritual levels are known as “Bija” or Seed Mantra.Great level of accuracy of pronunciations is needed in order to make these Bija Mantra effective. These Bija Mantra were considered as TOP MOST SECRET in order to avoid its misuse. They are like nuclear power. In order to pass them down through generations without revealing their explicit existence distinctly, they were camouflage in other words. These Bija Mantra are not invented by any human being. They have directly descended from their respective deity.ह्रां , ह्रीं , ह्रूं , ह्रैं , ह्रौं , ह्रः , ह्रां , ह्रीं , ह्रूं , ह्रैं , ह्रौं , ह्रःThese Bija Mantra have their own unique ‘signature’ in terms of acoustic vibration patters which are ‘designed’ to cause specific effect in the physical as well as in the astral world. Any misuse will cause harmful effects by the working of the pure laws of tantra. It is something like the process of ‘enriching of uranium’. This enriched uranium can be used for the benefit of mankind in production of electrical energy or it can be used for destructive purposes in the form of Atom Bomb.As you have seen from above, Surya Namaskar have much ‘evocative’ power. In order to get full benefits, I recommend following preliminaries to be followed1 Morning time upto 9 am is most beneficial.2 Taking bath and becoming fresh is needed.3 The ground should be clean. It is recommended that you personally, physically clean the floor with broom. Even if the floor is clean, still do it as a token.4 Do NOT use any Yoga mat or carpet. It is essential that your feet should be in direct contact with the Earth.5 Face East towards the rising Sun6 Except morning hot tea, coffee or milk, nothing else should be eaten. Empty stomach is needed.7 Do not play any background music.8 The place should be airy. It is recommended that you do it in an open place if possible.9 Give some time in practicing for a correct pronunciation of the Mantra. You are at liberty to use the translation in your own language, instead of the Sanskrit Mantra as given below. Do it meditating on the meaning as explained above. However, I will still recommend that for full benefits you chant the original Sanskrit Mantra. After practicing for millennia through antiquity, these Mantra have ‘engraved’ a channel in the cosmic world tapping the infinite source of energy therein. Using this same channel in the form of these Mantra saves us time in doing our own engraving hard work.10 Take help from a practitioner in doing correct physical postures. This is very essential. In conclusion, I will say that Surya Namaskar is a fantastic super power packed all inclusive yogic-cum-tantric-cum-spiritual practice which will definitely produce beneficial results in just 10 minutes of your time every day. It will be beneficial even without getting into the nitty gritty of their meanings, analysis, etymology and grammar. Even an illiterate person can immensely benefit from its practice.Happy Thought and Be BlessedReferencesIndian Express (4 September 2010)..Carol Mitchell (2003). Yoga on the Ball. How would we tackle an alien invasion?
What would the human race be capable of developing if we knew that hostile "aliens" were about to approach our planet in 5-10 years? Humans would develop a plan for such a contingency.Humans would develop a way to preserve the human race. If such a scenario were to take place, there is a plan that should be devised. I would do something like this: First we discern the message. Ask the questions Who? What? When? Where? How? Who are these aliens? Are they humanoid or some other form of life? What is their purpose for coming to Earth? What do we have that they would want? When exactly are they coming? Five year? Ten Years? Seven? Eight?Where are they coming from and where will they go when they come here? How are t...

How is China able to pay workers in factories so cheaply?
In the words of Tim Cook: "The popular conception is that companies come to China because of low labor costs. I'm not sure what part of China they go to, but the truth is China stopped being the low labor cost country years ago. That is not the reason to come to China from a supply point of view, the reason is because of the skill."Let us look at the concept of labor or the involvement of labor in an every-day product. Let us compare 2 products: a plastic fork vs a plush toy. Although both products fall on opposite spectrums of the consumer life cycle (one disposable whilst the other one is...
