Fasten your seat belts; I love answering this line of questioning. And as luck would have it I had an experience just this evening that demonstrates my point, and it's fresh on my fingertips. So let me start with the demonstration.At work I was working on an iPad app that shows a glowing image while your finger is touching it. The image properly appeared in the iPad simulator on the screen. But when I opened it on my iPad, the image wouldn't appear. It was late so I went home to finish it at home on my own Mac. (The cogniscenti are cringing at that fact.) At home, I couldn't even get the app to transfer to the iPad.First I was getting "Error fetching developer info." So I had to get around a new prompt to register my work identity with the Apple Developer Program... even though I absolutely had both work and personal accounts already known to Apple. After 4 times being prompted to register, I figured it wasn't a mistaken, stuck URL and registered. OK, I'm home free, right? No such luck.OK, now I was getting a the errors for the provisioning files and private keys. I was ready for these from 4 years ago when I last tried taking work from home to office computers. Twenty minutes of randomly double-clicking, dragging, installing, restarting Xcode, and guessing what options to set and I was over that hurdle.  Finally I could run the app on the iPad. After some experiments I tracked the problem down to the fact that the iOS Simulator is more tolerant of filename capitalization than the iPad. It probably took me an hour and a half for a 10-minute problem; not really terrible but that was with 4 years of iOS experience and having been through the private key ordeal before.I don't have a complaint about the simulator weakness; it's the sort of thing you get used to with software. The other stuff though is pure iOS fun-and-games. Apple has the fun; you get the games; and the average programmer gets locked so far out of the running that only the most persistent—and fortunate—are in the supply side of the supply-and-demand equation. In my own case, I was fortunate to have a free Mac at work and time between projects to learn.And now the answer:It is expensive because it is a scarce commodity in the most free and liquid market there's ever been.It's scarce because it's hard to learn, fee-based to enter, and time-consuming to signNow a productive skill level. (Once productive, I understand it is an amazingly proficient workshop. OK I'll buy that.) I am US$500 into my dev program fees; >$10,000 into iPhone family data payments to AT&T; $700 into Mac hardware.It's hard because it's a system of-, by-, and for hard-core programmers.It's a system of-, by-, and for programmer's because Apple has not held its authoring system, Xcode, to anywhere near the user experience standards to which it holds its consumer code. It has started to make progress on this front now that Apple realizes if they had made it user friendly they'd be 10 years ahead of Google instead of only 3 at this point.It has done this for a variety of possible reasons. I suspect it went something like this: first there was simply no reason to make it friendly... it was, after all, just their system, not public; then they were too busy... the targets moved too fast to improve the guns; then they were being nice making it public... it wasn't a priority to make other people as efficient as them; and now they try to add friendly things like a handy button that says "Fix your provisioning file automatically?" but it's hopelessly too complex, for example, failing because you don't have the right developer account as in my case.I don't think it has anything to do with the bar being raised on quality or features; lame apps that merely did table drill downs were disproportionately expensive before. And if iOS coding were more accessible, the incredible wealth of genius coders and designers would be swarming over the quality gap as in every other arena.
