What is it like to work for the Church of Scientology?
A major contingent of workers for the church are Sea Org (Organization) "members"(1) and I'll restrict my answer to them. Sea Org (SO) members are the closest the Church of Scientology has to the clergy of other religions. My understanding of Sea Org (SO) working life is based on the common details from many stories I've read from former SO members. I haven't read any stories from current members. They may tell a whole different tale. IntroductionSO members are voluntary workers who have signed various contracts and commitment statements(2) pledging their service to the welfare and advancement of Scientology for the next billion years. They are considered some of the more dedicated Scientologists. It is thought there are about 5,000 SO members and about 25,000 former members.(3) The following may explain why most SO members have trouble making it all the way to the billion year mark.Sea Org Work LifeThe church currently pays SO members a stipend of $75 a week. SO workers claim this works out to about 75 cents per hour for their efforts given the long work days, 7-day work weeks, and little time taken off in a year. In addition to a stipend SO members get communal lodging and religious training and services at a reduced rate or free. No sick days or health care coverage is provided and many SO members rely on free clinics.Living arrangements in the SO, known as "berthings", are often shared by 3-to-12 people. Married couples can live alone together when space is available, but marriage is discouraged and having children even more so since these circumstances chew into the billion years of service too much.(4)Cell phones and phone calls are only allowed by special permission. TVs are not allowed and only approved movies may be seen. Snail mail sent and received is screened and gets confiscated if it does not demonstrate a proper attitude toward the church. Personal computers are allowed, but without an Internet connection.(5) If SO members get sick, have accidents, or things otherwise don't "go right" in the performance of their duties, then they are suspected of doing or thinking something improper. Triggering bad events through improper deeds or thoughts is known as "pulling in the bad" and requires the SO member to make amends. Giving up off time to do extra work is a common way to make amends. SO members who continually pull in the bad or violate policy get sent to the Rehabilitation Project Force (RPF), a form of boot camp for SO members to learn the error of their ways. Life in the RPF is designed to be harsh to encourage the SO member to want to return to the comforts of their former SO life. If RPF training doesn't seem to be doing the job, there is also an RPF's RPF.(6)Credit cards, driver's license, and passports are often held for SO members to help them keep their vows of staying in service to the church. Leaving in an improper manner is considered a "high crime" worthy of expulsion from the church.Leaving the SO in a proper manner requires performing a "routing out" procedure. The procedure can be arduous and long (days to months) if the church does not wish to lose the SO member. SO members not properly routed out are given a "free-loaders" bill charging them for all of the religious training and services they received while in the SO.(7) (1) The Sea Org is a legal fiction with no employees, staff members, or volunteers. No one can "join" the Sea Organization since there is no organization to join. Instead, the Sea Org is an unincorporated group of people.(2) DOX: How Scientology ensnares the unsuspecting in a series of binding contracts(3) Leave Scientology(4) abortionsintheseaorg - exseaorg(5) Sea Org | Ex-Scientology Kids(6) Hubbard's Gulags: RPF's RPF(7) Correspondence with the Church of Scientology

How is police verification for a passport done?
I have read all the answers here but none seems have addressed the question properly.Let me try to enlighten about the procedure of Police Verification so that none should get worried or confused. After applying for a Fresh or Renewal of the passport, the PSK/PRO initiates a verification task to the applicant’s district Superintendent of Police office. At the same time, the application and related data are uploaded to the CCTNS (Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems) in the office of the state’s Special Branch i.e. the intelligence department of state police. The district Superintende...

What is the best way to donate organs in India?
I'd recommend signing up with NOTTO (National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation). It's a central government organisation, hence the process is completely legal and transparent. Your organs would signNow the needy based on the priority basis determined by the National transplant registry.Being someone who is registered there as a donor myself, I can assure you that the process is fairly simple. All you need to do is go to www.notto.nic.in and take the donor pledge. Download the pledge form, print it out, tick the organs/tissues you'd like to donate, fill in your details and send it to NOTTO through post. After NOTTO completes the processing, they'll create a donor card and send it to you. Please note that the donor card only indicates your willingness to be a donor. In the event of actual transplantation, the final consent has to be given by the donor's family. So please ensure that your family is aware about your decision and would support you.

What are the cleverest scams you have come across?
I stopped a ten million dollar robbery a few years ago.For various reasons, including my kids slight worries that I could get killed, I am changing all of the names. All of the other details are intact.A few weeks ago, a guy claiming to be related to Middle Eastern royalty—call him “M”—had a representative (a friend of a friend of a friend) call me and ask me if I knew anyone who would lend M ten million dollars. This sounds like a phone email scam that we get every day.But it wasn’t. The intermediary who called me was well known. And we double-checked and triple-checked all the collateral and background info.“He has collateral,” the rep said, “$25 million in restricted shares of [well known private Internet company]. “So I called a fund I used to be an investor in. They were interested and made an offer. Call the fund manager “Bill”.Bill said, “We’ll lend $10 million IF we get the full $25 million on any default.” Here were Bill’s other terms:- 15% interest, paid quarterly- the full loan is due back in two years- $600,000 fee paid to Bill up front.- Bill wanted 25% of all the upside on the full $25 million in shares for the next ten years.I had never seen a term in a loan like that last one but I give Bill credit. Why not ask for it? In a negotiation it never hurts to ask for anything.M said, “Yes”. He needed the money fast for some real estate he wanted to buy.We verified that the real estate existed and that M was involved.Bill began his due diligence. M sent a fax picture of the shares. His lawyers sent over all the contracts M had signed to get those shares. M even wired $15,000 to Bill to pay for Bill’s legal fees. M wanted no hurdles to getting the deal done. Lawyers on both sides were busy every day all day, working out the details.Bill said to M: I need permission from the Internet company that I would be the potential shareholder if you default. It took a day but M sent over a letter. It was written on the Internet company’s letterhead, signed by the company’s “Director of Investor Relations” giving Bill permission to control the shares in a default and “call me at XYZ phone number if you have any questions.”By coincidence, I knew the Director of Investor Relations but hadn’t spoken to him in a year or so.Finally, last Friday, Bill calls me in the morning. He was about to wire ten million dollars to M.“I don’t know,” Bill said. “I have to tell you, James, something seems funny.”“What?”“The letter from the head of investor relations at the company. It almost seemed too simple. Why didn’t he throw in a line indentifying the company?”“I don’t know,” I said. I had no clue. “Is that standard?”“I don’t know either,” Bill said and he sort of drifted, “I just don’t know. But something makes me feel funny.”“I have an idea,” I said. “I know the guy who wrote that letter. I’ll write to him and ask him if he wrote that letter. This way he independently verifies.”Bill said, “OK, do it.” So I did.I didn’t hear back. Bill called again two hours later.Bill said, “Look, let’s call up the number on this letter. You stay quiet.”So Bill called and someone picked up and said he was “X”, the head of investor relations for this company. I’ve spoken to X a few times before. The voice did not sound like X but it had been awhile.Bill and X started talking about the letter. Then Bill said, “Hey, by the way, I have your friend James Altucher on the line to say Hi.”CLICK.Dial tone.“We got disconnected,” I said.Bill started laughing.“JAMES!” he said.“What?”“This is a total fraud! That was a fake phone number. That guy was an actor! Do you think it was an accident we got disconnected the second I said you were on the phone?”I felt like an idiot.“I don’t understand. Why would they go through all of that?”Bill said, “Holy shit, I almost wired $10 million. That’s why they did it!”“I don’t get any of this,” I said. I was in denial. I had never seen a $10 million robbery in action. Then X, the ACTUAL head of investor relations at the company, wrote back to me. He said, “Stop by for coffee next time you are in SF. Meanwhile, I will contact your friend Bill about this letter you sent me.” Nothing else.I called Bill.“Yeah, X is all up in my grill about where I got this letter supposedly signed by him. He had never signed it. He wanted to know who was involved, etc. The shares were forged. That guy we called was fake. The contracts were forged. Signatures were forged. This is a total fraud. Authorities are being notified. It’s all bad.”Meanwhile, M, and his lawyers, had all disappeared at this point. No more contact. Nobody picking up their phones according to Bill.“Ugh,” I said. I felt sick. “I’m sorry I even introduced you to these guys.”Bill said, “Don’t worry. We’re in the business of looking at all opportunities. You helped figure this out. Without you I probably would’ve wired. But I’m glad I had a hunch.”So I have to give Bill credit again. I’ve ignored my hunches many times and paid the price. When your body whispers to you, you have to listen. The FBI followed up a week or so later. They were neck-deep in an investigation on this. I have no idea what happened after. There’s a lot of bad people in the world. All they want to do is destroy and vanish. They roam the world like pirates.A network of lawyers, escrows, fake shares, bank accounts, bogus corporations and banks, all set up to hide them in the shadows. A network of relationships and lies. The dark side of the force.Sometimes they are fake royalty. Sometimes they are your neighbor. Your friend. Your family. Your whatever.Sometimes the fraud is your bank account. Sometimes your heart.I had to go after I got off the phone with Bill. I went to my daughter’s high school play. I sat outside in the parking lot of the school for a few minutes. I was shaking. We had spoken to Evil on the phone.I went into the school. I hate plays but I liked watching my daughter on stage. Then I wrote this post. “Maybe don’t publish it,” my daughter said. "It could be dangerous".I want life to be simple and good. I don’t want my head to hurt. I don't want to deal with bad people.Sometimes you just have to take a deep breath and say “thank you” without understanding why."Thank you."Sometimes people ask me what I do for a living.I solve crimes.

What were you taught incorrectly when you were a child?
As Sati said so concisely in her answer: how to human. My mom didn’t want kids. She didn’t like kids. She didn’t even marry until she was 30, and I’m her first child, born 3 years later. She & my dad had an apartment a few blocks from her parents, and my grandma told me that my mom refused to get up and feed me in the night or change me. Basically, I was left to cry myself to sleep. My grandfather would walk to their apartment early every morning, fix me a bottle, and clean me up. Lacking natural bonding rituals with my mother, I cannot form meaningful relationships. As God is my witness, no family member ever said the words “I love you” to me. Or to anyone else, that I recall. My sister is MR (“mentally disabled”?), and my grandma took her away from my parents when she was 2, knowing my sister wouldn’t live to adulthood in our house. It’s a miracle I did. My mom was physically violent with me ; the first beating I remember, I was 3. She didn’t prepare food much, or do laundry, or keep the house up. When I started first grade, nobody got me up, fixed breakfast, or helped me to find something to wear among the piles of clothes on top of the dressers. I didn’t know people washed their faces and brushed their teeth daily until I was about 9. God knows what I must’ve looked like, in dirty Goodwill clothes, yellow teeth, dirty and unbrushed hair. I cringe. My parents were solid, 100%, dictionary-definition White Trash. My mom was the only high school graduate in the family, and she was 19 when she graduated. She got a job in a laundromat. My dad somehow made it to 8th grade, ignorant and happy to be, and wouldn’t get a job if you held a gun to his head. Why? He could mooch off his own mom & sign up for welfare. I remember the first visit to sign up for welfare, I think it must be the first year it was offered, maybe 1962? I was ashamed, but didn’t understand why. Anyway, when I was born, my mom quit working and never went back, even years later when I was a teenager and dad was in jail for 4 years, she made no effort to get a job.I was not monitored, so I ran in the woods and played in the creek, climbed on coal piles, God knows how I managed to not be bitten by a copperhead. I was never taken to educational things, shows, swimming pools, movies, or provided any creative outlet. My parents didn’t have friends—-everyone loathed them, especially other family members, so I never learned to entertain, how to be a proper guest, or basic social skills. My parents never said much when I did something right. If I did something wrong, I was beaten, slapped, screamed at. I acted out, I’m sure, because I had nothing else to do but read, which I loved, but y’know, a kid needs other healthy activities, too. There was never money for anything, much less summer camp or new shoes for gym class. I learned not to ask for anything that costs money. I’m so grateful to be getting this off my chest, I could weep. But one last thing stands out as The Remark that defined me for the rest of my life. When I was 14, my mother said she and daddy had been talking and they thought I was crazy. They were thinking about “sending me” to a mental hospital in another town. I was stunned. I was the smart one! I made good grades (the only thing they ever said they were proud of me for). THEY thought I was crazy? My whole view of myself was shattered. From that summer afternoon 48 years ago to this very moment, I never know how I appear to others. I never know if what I’m about to say or do will be perceived as crazy. This one remark has fucked up my education, my romantic relationships, my ability to make and keep friends, and my career. I’m never “right”; I’m always the “weird “ one.Somehow I managed to go to college, come out the other side with an MA in English (never do that, seriously) and stayed employed as a professional in education for 30 years. I’m proud of that, I guess, though I have a ton of retroactive regrets, but the one thing in my life that I did completely right was, I did not become my mother. My kids are, and have always been, perfect. Kate is 41 and Tom is 38, they’re gainfully employed in jobs they love, and are lovely human beings. Yay, me, the Crazy one. Thanks to those who’ve plowed through this. It has been very cathartic for me.
