stuff so go to our site see it tonight we're going to have a very interesting subject also very tragic the period of time 1861 62 63 in the mountains of West Virginia it's a clash of oftentimes brother against brother or county again and family often times family against family so this letter to God in 1861 and 62 a very bitter guerrilla warfare carried out by humans like the moccasin Rangers on the other side the Union side had their snake hunters we're lucky to have a very good historian here tonight George has said no that he's not a professional historian I will remind folks that most of the books in our library are not written by professional historians oftentimes researchers scholars that work on both family histories award history County histories and that tonight we're lucky to have a very good one a native of Parkersburg West Virginia a minister in the Church of Christ I think and also a really good historian about Civil War history and I want to make this focus the Civil War history that deals with the bitter oftentimes in turn I see warfare in the counties right across the middle of the state mostly and these counties faced a very brutal and difficult guerilla warfare the encountered warfare that was was brought by regiments like the 36th Ohio was also very brutal they got tired of getting shot at and they begin to hang big man it's not a pretty picture George has his book where they've been I want to show the cover of it here I can only say it's a very interesting book I like his viewpoints and I'm glad he came to speak to us tonight let's have a big hand please for George a some of you've been here a while you've already been offered to look over the books I don't want to see myself as a book salesman but if when I'm boring you need something to do you can look over the pages of the book stick your hand up for example if you look at one you might even like one of the things that I did when I got started on studying this was get locked and hooked by the curiosity about this kind of thing you go on in the name of a civil war horse I understood I'm a veteran I've ran enough to know how a horse generally go but when it's all of your neighbors and in this case and the state of West Virginia maybe as much as Missouri Kentucky or anybody else in the border or didn't have to do a lot of cases so much with the battles the rich mountain or wherever they happened to hear of them but at all stuff that happened any old a in your backyard into your neighborhood that you didn't want to hear about and you didn't want to deal with because one side or the other would be up to what you would be considering no good and this is my attempt to try to reconstruct this and understand it when I started at this it just didn't seem like I've had enough hat pegs and the hand holes to put stuff to try to understand it so I realized you know if I'm having this problem I'm sure a lot of people did so let me drag this up a little favor and I started years ago writing up a little chapters and word words and things like that and as the sesquicentennial started to come near I said you know this might make a good book for the sesquicentennial because at least it's different as West Virginia goes and it might even be different this guerrilla warfare period that goes so this is just the book cover but most of what we're talking about here and you hear me okay okay for the most part the moccasin Rangers was the most notorious guerrilla bird West Jenya there were other groups other people were bad there were bad things done in a lot of places but taken as a whole the maquas rangers tended to be representative of the worst and they started in Calhoun County this is near a place called Big Bend up on route 5 for any of you to know where it is a galvan County it's just west of Grantsville and this is the home of the first court in the county and a lot of the members and the moccasin Rangers were involved in this they weren't a lot of poor losers in the moccasin Rangers a lot of them were landed connected influential people in their communities and in this case you can see that quite a number of these names have happened to be moccasin Rangers also were involved in politics pretty heavily and this would have been the northern tier a an influential person in West Virginia in that area anyway as far as secession promotion went would be the cousin of Stonewall Jackson in this case William Lowther of Jackson his cousin and also lieutenant governor in 1856 his brother-in-law I think his name is Jonathan Bennett was a state auditor in this time and an overview of what we're going to try to look at here for the Muppets and Rangers the stadium look at the key characters like very common the Douglas brothers Peter Sauber and George dams these are leading names in the group standing alone in a row Brian committee heart I have why brokers and helpful maps to understand the territory and why things seem to happen in the most remote places and you sit and scratch your head you say why would anybody want to do something like that there and when you understand the geography it kind of helps you out a little bit and one thing kept in mind this great plan pointed out was across those central counties was a kind of a way that you threaded your way through it be lines Union being the enemy between Parkersburg and the oil fields and Greenbrier County down in Dixie and you had to get back and forth the best way you could in those days because a long way somebody might shoot you and this is where bushwhacking comes from that kind of a concept the the most notably here the moccasin Rangers was very calmly this picture of his headstone mistaken few years ago near chow and that grain will commemorates him likely is a group grade that there's probably about seven people anyway buried in that grave and one of his other leading friends with a safe Peter starboard this is what's largely here does this headstone in Bethlehem cemetery Grantsville another leader in the moccasin Rangers was George dams he came to be pretty well known as the history of the group moved along because in the initial conflict and violence a lot of the key leaders were killed and that left a lot of slots over the more Lotus was spilled by Georgia dams and ever-present almost from the beginning was Nancy hurt she was a sweetheart of Joshua Douglas who ran around with very calmly I don't hold to the view that she and Perry were sweethearts this is at the Rowan County Cavan County Line along West Fork of the local river where Nancy hurts family farm was and this is the spring that they used then it still runs today and if anybody knows anything about the Weitzel family reunion up there they make a big deal of inviting you to come down and drink some water from Nancy Heartspring and that's a picture of it it runs from up on the hill where they tell me it's far from solids to know there's a big ole stand up there and they just follow that all out I guess that's a good way to hold water it's a solid stem but also on the West Fork would be what is called Nancy's dancing rock because I understand that it wasn't in there that was probably a little deeper swimming home then and if any of you as kids love to swim and creeks and jump off rocks and what-have-you this had to have been about the best you could get his kid for a swimming pool because they didn't happen as we know now in Nicholas County at Summersville there's a marquee like this describing then the best-known exploit at least Nancy Hart a little moccasin Rangers and the history of that hopefully help run a straight path Nancy here was captured by 9th West Virginia their horses and held prisoner here and while held prisoner in order to escape she shot her guard and go away and in the course of that she went over into Greenbrier County below Cole mob mountain alerted a lot of the people she didn't pocket some greeters included and said hey summers bills a cakewalk then let's go to clean that place down because the last bunch just left and boy you can't believe all the supplies besides that some of our people were prisoner up there so let's go get him loose and she led a bunch of Raiders from there to get them out of the Summersville situation fortunately for them at least they were able to capture the compound and the tape whisperer those who ben-hur captures one of the things that helps explain what I'm talking about here is Calhoun County right over here in Broome County and both led early in the Civil War as you might imagine the Indians job was to secure the state and in the bigger picture saved Ohio in the Confederacy so one of the things that became to be true was they secured the railroad up north then they had secured workers birdsong flying through the northeastern Northwestern whoever you don't wake up there that the Kanawha River area does security fairly early and with that most of the battles we see were securing the Turnpike's roads that kind of thing but what a lot of people don't know is the only bridge down purple of Charleston all the way to Clarksburg was a line of twenty-some I believe it was not Indian posts these places served anywhere from being garrison for a regimen regimen for mortars to being basically a way station for communication supplies and whatever else the Union could stay supply either way by using the Weston pipe the some of them called it or the Gauley Bridge point and if you program Confederate Ranger guerilla you had problems then because you couldn't use any of the major transportation in those days safely for long anyway so if you were going to move material you had to basically get past where everything happened with me and that wasn't always an easy job and that's why you hear of some of these guerrilla encounters being seemingly in the middle of nowhere because they had to use all the water roads everywhere all the waterways work and guild waterways were the original route so what happened was if you're moving for burning Springs now to Lewisburg you can use the West pipe that was kind of a straight shot for a while but then once you go over this watershed watershed you really have to know where you're going sometimes you had to move at night as much as you moved during the day and you needed to have friends and good places so anybody who had a nice farm that was kind of battle a little bit where you can hike cattle horses hey and whatever else you might need why that was really handy but that made it hard for the Union to catch you through here so that what happened was the activity was apparently a ten through here because one of the advantages was governor Letcher early in the war he wanted to cause the Union a lot of trouble in the lines in the back so people call people to their patriotic duty to resist and take out Union positions and people on whatever but they're one of the payroll and if you didn't have much to live on yourself anyway as a person you still have to have clothing you have to have horses you have to have food and where do you think you're going to get that the Union resources dry up very fast so for long it doesn't matter which side you are on if you have something somebody wants it it will be theirs whether they're Union working better now in this case the Union had the advantage of having a lot of butter water masters and it's why so the Confederates we try to get all that and in a way that they could but the Indian wasn't above taking what they wanted either when it came to somebody's cat or Schaefer than anything else they wanted to eat now here's a better map of the area where a lot of this activity takes place because the south of the little Kanawha River watersheds around summers develop here which is where the 36th Ohio came to be located from September or 61 until May of 62 and they scattered all through this area and their basic job was not just to be ready to fight Confederates better along with the electric West Virginia in the little Kanawha River watersheds they were basically told take care of the growing problem and the fella who was the regimental commander of the 36th Ohio came from California as an Indian fighter his name's George crew and he basically started to live in West Virginia when he did when he fought Indians he started tapping reliable intelligence finding out who knew who was doing what and then he just started sending out reading birdies to round up those he considered to be the bad guys so that did not endear him to Confederate locals at least and the moccasin Rangers in particular because once he understood who was doing what how they were getting through the area and stuff they just started sending radiant raiding parties out to intercept them if he got word somebody was moving cabin down for us say the the cherry red bird or something he'd say what will be in the morning and he'd send a bunch of guys out catch him take their cattle and send them we can't chase in Columbus which he did on few occasions the final resting place same place where the moccasin Rangers ended up being almost two Louisbourg this is just south of Bulldog mountain in Greenville County and if you look at this big meadow this is just one small section of a really nice area which if you happen to be cavalry the a forage horses grazing and all that kind of thing you don't do any better than this you get up on the other side of that mountain we start going toward Webster County and the Braxton County and you might get some grass but you know nothing like this and one one account has it that try to remember for sure about two-county radius there's some reason there isn't a horse left that had been stolen by somebody so they were a price now all the way through there he had big old trees like this do a lot of merging timber and if you can imagine some of the the the forests were pretty thick now going back to the 11th west virginia company and the elected west virginia came to be known as the snake hunters probably as a derisive take on the moccasin Rangers trying to label them as water moccasins and snakes which probably wasn't their intent in the beginning but the commander the West Virginia was this fella named John wrapped them he was a oil tycoon a lot of mothers in the oil boom that had been going on since 1860 or 59 and here he is in his military uniform and not surprisingly early in war he's having a hard time raising a regiment from that area because so many people were already boxer Rangers now asking somebody to declare their allegiance and in an area that's already heavily contested and it's combative anyway and to say they only joined the Union Army with many of your neighbors are Macha strangers hanging around you're not sure you want to leave home and do that very well because that wouldn't be safe for your family and your farm but he got company in a fairly quickly because they gave marginally out of the feeling area and down the Ohio River so one of the first main encounters that democracy Rangers came to be known for it was the siege of Spencer which was at the end of August 1861 and depending on your account anywhere from three to four to five hundred blocks Rangers had the a Home Guard surrounded in the turbulent courthouse and one of the things they were said to have done was have a fake cannon over here I think this is olf you know where the Union was just scared to death the Union for the Confederates had gotten a hold of the cannon but they were a little suspicious then shot it out of the enemy so they said we'll spike Maria from the deal but they found out it's nothing to blog on wagon and that took care of that scare but but meanwhile getting in terms of moving from workers work through the area and laughter because Hanna Spencer his first mission was to relieve the siege of Spencer which at the approach of six or seven hundred men that wasn't too hard for me beside they wonderful Wow and this is just another view of Spencer very calmly the leader of the moccasin Rangers is said to have made a legendary sniper shot off this Dale for over to the Google of the post office to appeal the occupant I'm not sure it's this Hill maybe one over there but anyway that that's how he really started to come with him well done and also in that same short beginning period of history a number of other people came to have been shot the moccasin Rangers and it was attributed to very calmly so he got the name being pretty much the bad guy of the group along with the 11th West Virginia was 36 the file that told you about they were in summer spill this this was their commander of this point he's the Major General later on in the war but he came from California his name captain and and Lieutenant Colonel the ship company cheated the 36th Ohio was to the 36 what company a was to the 11th West Virginia they were the their mainstay barillo hunters and when they when they are rattling to leave for war it was in front of this hotel back then this was the big meeting place of the valley house is still there but probably a little short of its original grandeur as you might imagine the leased building still exists even though some of us probably burned down in the meantime the commander of that company was a true reformer who was later pretty influential politically with the Rutherford Hayes politics and he was a mayor and warrior all that kind of thing and very ethical higher and that's what is better more formal pictures one of his buddies was a fella named Wallace Stanley the regiment's adjutant and to the guys that probably did some of the heavier duty dirtier duty and scouting would be James and Thomas Stanley also in the same area and needless to say once these forces came together atrocities during the Edo and as soon as somebody did somewhat something that the other side said was really bad they tended to hit it with at least as much gusto or more than what they were reacting to so there be the climbing spiral of violence and it started early in the central part of West Virginia with an incident on Monday rib right after the Battle of artifacts ferry this is still Monday road by the way it probably looks like what it did the Civil War but it's still there sometime from the uses that it is wooded and out and that kind of thing but but that's it and when you get out there you find this headstone and in this case says Nicholas Ramsey born a certain day murder certain day and what happened was some bushwhackers in the area shot Nicholas Ramsey from this clip and when they buried we were reading and Nichols is young man his wife just delivered a baby and they were they were just kind of considered the dream come true kind of couple except that people of the community could very well handle them being together because Nicholas was from a Yankee family and she was from Confederate family then they had people on both sides wasn't wild about that now just up the road from where Nicholas was ill this is on the boats called Luger this primitive man was the old Nicholas Pike and today it's called the White House this is an old picture from the eighteen hundred's this was a cabin during the Civil War and it's a boarding house right now and during the Civil War that worked around that house and one of the earliest scandals and the superorder that really heightened tensions for Confederate minded people was what they called work that happened here but this is the house as it looks today copper painted a little bit closer that's my good wife for them and the owner of the property here Mack McMillian business name and almost nothing is upgraded or changed since the Civil War the selector has been put in it but not much more than that because when you win side is either so it's over years ago just like this they will see that school is handsome walls I mean whole breakthrough with panels and here's some and Emily was in the house and there I am looking at that mannequin but a lot of after is what's the good of that mannequin because it looks like there's the rain spill leak is what most people would think that is but that's what from the Civil War the 36th Ohio short guy dragged him in here to let him lay down on the floor here they could never get one cleaned up since then and blood along with this guy right here that they they stopped in a security stop along the road from the house and make a long story short he he broke my guess is he knew who he was dealing with what the wild about his options he was out here for yeah but although he showed in the uniform I can't find his name or military rule anywhere okay so chances are he was a grill and to be caught was a guerrilla by the 36th Ohio is not something and he knew that if he didn't get shot he probably at least can't chase and he went wild about those options and he just lived down the road so because it was dark does he was headed up in the house winning that door on that porch he decided to hit off into the dark but one of the guys shot it dropped him in the back when he went down he just bashed his head in with a gun but he wouldn't live bro he had his head bashed in but that's what I'm saying violence about this particular incident even today the same board from civil wars there were too many walls enough one of those many ball holes lines up with the place in the back before there were there still many ball in the wall back there the kind of place to keep for history when just kind of illustrate that back but looking down this is where they buried him at this point with the civil war the 36th Ohio gave the guy a military burial when they stopped in another place they needed some of the need they bought this deer that they ain't it was a more civil time but as the hospital these needed up people to start taking robbing steal whatever now the next incident happened now this this was jamming down this case we're looking at something that happens up over accident County County line and it's just gas away and it's one of those places where on top of this hill a couple of runs great place types of horses and nobody Converter just exactly what was going on there something suspicious to us because is this this this son of mine was just a little bit farther up the hill here and this had covered up the body of a 14 year old boy that some locals killed might be hanging up on the side now why you don't just shoot somebody you're gonna kill them you know I I don't know why you have to cut their head off chances are they needed to be quiet because they didn't need anybody know that this guy probably stumbled onto something that he didn't the locals didn't want the Indian finding out about which would be another guerrilla operation so you have to be polite about that you take him out and in this case they covered up his body but one of the guys who did it couldn't keep his mouth shut like often happens he's never the local water alcohol whole damn towns and I've got the bragging about killing the Yankee it was kind of drags on circles you know what and in this case he said what we did tell a little bit of the story get some of the neighbors attention go long they come and check it out local there right there's a body under this pile of rocks so they bring in the Union and the poor people are arresting the patriarch his wife a son and a hired hand there they're taken from charged and court-martial but the body is only discovered in November the incident happened in September so look at the explanation if this heard about Nicholas Ram Singh there's been the incident of the Becker guy shot and now this guy has his meanwhile other people it'll say horses are being spoken all the time people are getting more upset so people are getting more reactive so then this guy is taken in custody in November but meanwhile something else is happening number two this is where they find an area right over here we're just pulling up some headstones where the farmer apparently keep mowing around those things he just lay them down but over it booger hole in Clay County there's old town called old place called I think this is gold rush for up in here and this is what little otter area on the county line give Lazar would be straight but if you want this haul over this past they s transmission line there's a hole right here and we ended this far to the barnyard and in early November the moccasin Rangers have been getting really upset because George Burke has been busted a bunch of their guys catching them take it into the camp chase someone get shot up sometimes and they think some people are rat them out because the people that are getting busted tend to come from here so somebody out here must be telling them what's going on so my guess is very calmly has been teaching lesson we're just not putting up with rats when it comes to what's going on and Nancy hurts with Joshua Douglas lot of the KPK bring leaders in democracy Rangers so Nancy's brother Alwyn is said to have been killed around the county by being stood up against tree shot for the halls so what they do to these two guys they tied around the Buckeye tree my suspicion is up here in the night tied in retreat Buckeye tree Shawn pool halls what's the what's the moral that story if you love Buckeyes the Union you open your mouth well that wasn't exactly endearing to you until they had a union regular Simone guards and they're trying to run these guys down and find it because back before the interstate if you go straight over to this hill you come up to but for I think it is and Stinson and they do right on the West Ward and you're on the way to arms burg where a lot of these people are from they're also heading home after something or other and of course of that name Nancy and Perry get caught Perry gets away Nancy gets caught when Stenson Creek but they don't know that she had anything to do with that so they let her go so only later after they find out she had something to do with it if she seriously wanted in her life and this is just that she's a spot that people supply all the time but she was involved in the murder of two men by most people's account now this is they can't outline the summer's bill a lot of us think of Civil War winter camps has been tense all that kind of thing well 36-mile took over town and anybody who abandoned their house or whatever your house was considered fair game spoils of war so anybody that was Indian minded or at least if they were Confederate made themselves they could stay in their house but they took it over everything else was empty and this ended up making headquarters house the end of it here was a telegraph office and there was the cable so that would be the setting for when Nancy Hart later brings the place because she shoots her guard either because she's upstairs in headquarters house or upstairs office one of the other reasons why sure with but a number of their buddies are in jail which is number five right there which houses captain so obviously the company captain of his staff the house anybody else they can get in there and he outbuildings that they had to stay and they took him over in fact all of the guys in the letter hole told his mother he says you probably think we're really cold having a really hard on here down here tiny mom we have it better here than you do there we are we have comfortable beds we have everything but there were one team one house even there's three pianos in it we don't have anybody to play out that activity and that's Kevin Ware's house today and there's the courthouse and here's the corner where once stood the telegraph office now while they were there one of the things that they were attempting blinking when in stamford that applause as well as doing reconnaissance is flying for that as well as Jason Bush partners and when you go down to the mineral Bluffs area here's the house that I'm keeping someone scared by my request but that was the headquarters who waited for a time the General Lee himself and a lot of that hill that that's a right fit and that goes along the river for quite a ways and that's a lot of entrenchment when you stop and think about what they expected to come down that the jeans they were ready and they notice the strategy of it you get more every years but we won't get across there while you know they're right there so so that's the way they had that plan the only problem would be what do you do if they keep coming then you've got to kill the mind here and here the sitting duck so while they're there in moccasin Rangers had besieged Ripley in August not crippling Spencer but in December they arraigned it Ripley presumably for supplies they were still trying to win her out up around the Big Bend somewhere javelin County area but there came to be so much pressure against them that if it's getting cold you don't have a place to stay your trouble so you can't stop some wise breeze so they did what they could getting that stuff back and they probably expected the any of the legal owners I don't know but they came right in after him in December a couple of quick raids and broke them up the December during which time they had leaves so they go over to their calendar that in the glades which is southeast of Sutton and if so they had been planning to make a winter camp here but they didn't have supplies again so they rated at Sutton and then the forces that raid set something on fire just three county seats you're not very well-liked when that kind of stuffs happening to you so what that did was leading to a big unity response out of general he took nine companies of summers ago laughter they knew pretty much over this way but a big snow storm came up they they did the green debris in the December of 61 and probably on January 1st or so they were between southern Summersville in a blinding storm freezing to death about the middle of nowhere no place to get in they could build fires but the wind was so strong can just you know either set their clothes on fire or didn't do it any good because they couldn't get close enough but but that was enough for the field staff people general few companies decided go backwards for summer still and eight left for companies and said no what I want you guys to do is go pay that back when you get out there I want you to leave anything for them to burn at all so as they head to work talent even though they reach this place they not only engaged the moccasin Rangers of course they they they then they kill very calmly but they learned everything were several miles around and as they're all the way back to summers a lot of writes in the letter he says I concede for sixteen eighteen miles behind me everywhere we've been because it's nothing but very smoke talk about burning and by some accounts forty percent for some super bored I won't say it was all them that had to be a big part of it anyway and it was again some of this escalating reaction against what somebody else did they felt like they had and right nearby there's a felony the Chapman whose headstone is here on the hill we tell that story in total except to say some some folks the sliding news indeed donating and he was being too stingy he tried to save his milk out but he did his throat slit in the process this is the only building in that surrounding area that Oakland historian this has survived the Union burning and that's at that time what the schoolhouse was they put a couple [ __ ] buildings shed but that's now he says probably the only the oldest existing education structure and in the state you guys figure out that's what you said so what they're going to do then is they go to winter camp that Greenberg County there run out of cow where do yo go down not back to Big Bend you don't go to her first birth you have to keep pushing south and to do that yes pretty nasty weather or the mountains that's what they did was and this is on the other side gold da Pollock mountain is basically the generic term for all my places around it there is a gold knob that's right and this is AG an important now some of the camps were located right in here and in the course of the squaring were still after these guys so he sent spot missions over here and his guys here on this hill where if your old man outside Radley or yellow would be heard on this kind of thing both spies right over here over they give spyglasses they can hear what's going on they can counter to say they're spying through even in the spring in 1862 one of the place there are three or four cabins along the way to meet summers they'll be cold not that get mentioned in some of the writings and what happened was the Taylor place they used to be out on that point this is all the slept with kidney stones because it was a cabin but this was the Taylor place because that call this was at that time let's see what the holiday place and it came to be the rebels vapor all still this there was but I believe this was the original cabinet that gradually got built long too and was kept up but in between this place was a place of uncle Spencer place and there are a number of records about you know we were out on a scale and we stopped the holiday place the Taylor place or whatever and that's what we know today and once they were out of winter camp picked up get out there and they get how long this better come up and a little snow could stay on [Music] so by the time they come out of winter camp it's May six the Battle of Bladensburg they've been away from home I'm sure when they started yeah that this thing is going to take as long as it did when they started they they had to be thinking that you know we just pretty good flight good persistence we're going to run these guys out of here and we're going to save our community the best but eventually they're a run farther and farther and farther out there's no way you can protect your home you certainly can't from down below cold Nam and now when they come back do County County what's the middle of their community but in Yankee form so if they're going to come home they have to deal with the 11th West Virginia so they try to attack it they're not able to attack it and take it out so they they try to negotiate it and they negotiate a truce for eight days as I understand it with the with the commander - guys Spartans were so caught haze as homes were right right there they are responsible for most of the negotiations with Rathbone probably they knew each other before the war because they might have even been talking with oil contracts and that kind of thing before the war if not before they'll certainly keep that in mind as they're negotiating because you know this is over they might have to do business now if they can only each other a favor that'd be great - might be behind this thing but general Kelly commander of West Virginia gets into the fact that he's negotiated this tree of truce with down in the office and Rangers he forbids it it's a shutdown breakdown arrest those guys so think they arrested so called pace early them they chased the rest of them around for a while but this is what democracy Rangers is this is where honest where progress and there's where the post office is but the historic marker plastered up here really happen but all these hills around Arnold's burger that's where the Confederates we're trying to put down the fire on you run them out but they were too far away to have much of an effective range so they just basically shrugged along and not too many people in that exchange interesting length here's here's what the blockers the map the horizontal marker says says Hades and George so couples were Rangers the 19th Virginia cavalry well 1914 to Calgary doesn't exist yet it's not even sure that we're in the Virginia state line so they may have even had still been guerrillas at this point but the answer to try to be a the children military force for Virginia came to the historic of the Virginia state line Rangers because with all this escalation of anger it came to the point where the Indian basically said look if you're not and regularly enrolled better regimen we feel free to shoot you period at least you're a criminal you're not title to write something back so in order not to be treated that way but not necessarily put them to the proper military colonel letter governor Leger started the Virginia state line Rangers as an attempt to be a legitimate force the Union didn't didn't recognize them okay so at best they were Virginia statewide Rangers here so this is a great when you read that and it wasn't fewer than 100 men because everybody in that area was gone who was involved with mock strangers because jury they can't chase her on the run because the union just so much pressure on so look Colonel Burton comes out Summersville in the spring he's he he tried to launch an attack in March got snowed out they started never with the hill run those guys out there and that was unsuccessful only after the Calhoun County guys left already and but he did run the captives free the Greenbrier River and he was engaged with Lewisburg at that point after the battle Lewisburg they can't count almost metal bluffs at this location and for a short period of time the 36th of I belong to some other Union regiments were taken out of the West Virginia theater in the Army of the Potomac where they arrived just in time to do the rearguard action and second Manassas they were engaged in South Mountain and a Nandina and then they came back to West Virginia for court only to be all were irritated Gorillaz because we came back he had all this friends saying only kill us I promise flying we after you left they distrito miss terrible and girl all upset but he was in command of the department West Virginia by this time so he had a lot more resources than the 36th Ohio so he said well fix those guys he was he was just straight down here mountain or somewhere you know below us here in Charleston and he ordered a raid on Cold Mountain from there so he sent cavalry from near Charleston here all the way across country around summers ago down to where Cold Mountain along with the 11th Ohio coming in from the north he said I want you to go in there just clean those guys out but the problem is that place is hard to get into now the ones goal it was Thanksgiving 1862 and in November just day after Thanksgiving they launched this grade and it gets snowy it gets snow here snow here before long the Cavalry's in trouble they can that be it very well they're almost there the infantry is pretty much given up the ghost there they're just not going well at all they turn around back to but they and this is so when they talk about the one Lewis mill but the guy worked had from the second West Virginia to wind and do the attack finally decided what we've come all this way they were only like three or four miles out on top of the knob look we can turn it around and go back and give up or we can go down and try the most audacious Bluff you're ever going to see because hook it down there will grow will get the drop on them to tell them the resources are coming and hopefully pull this thing off maybe they'll be nice maybe as a person in the world but doesn't work but a handful guys go in like they're the advance guard or the big bunch of Druze and there's nothing but ops but anyway then they command the Confederates all throw up their hands and surrender probably their powders for OSAP and stuff anyway you just don't have guns around when the weather's bad sometimes powder doesn't do well and primer and the kinds of stuff that you have to use so probably they were afraid wouldn't work anyway so they give up they say well these guys have been abused and they round them all up and I was assuming they hadn't died off and everything they said will work the rest of your guys we don't have any and they have more prisoners than they have guys to march back so basically what amounted to they got as many back to summer spills that good and when it got to heart in some cases that something Yankees and say you go hide in the bushes yeah but anyway they got they get some of them back and the guy who commanded that was given the motor honor in 1880 something as one of the most heroic things when you think of the circumstances they would be pretty good I think [Music] don't listen to her husband they probably got married in May of 62 by the wife of George silca who was doing his Magisterial duties while he was off fighting and even George Trimble became commander there so I don't he wrote back to headquarters Sanaa fed up with this woman she's she's conducted marriages and everything else here like she runs the place it's that's my job but apparently the moccasin Rangers came back May 5th or so afterwards somebody needed to tie the knot and if you were Joshua Douglas you didn't do major trouble to do your wedding you know what I mean or anybody else there so that's probably how they got married because in July when she's captured by Colonel storm the 9th West Virginia in his bill of particulars describing her she said to be the wife of Josh Douglas married Joshua Douglas whatever happened they had that much honor already by that time and that's when we really hit stems where she was probably not done by her that's the one exists there today but she didn't die until nineteen twelve or thirteen and this is a picture of her son Candace were oldest the three in his place who in the 80s there okay all right in after the war people still tended to settle things their own way and he was 49 through door the guy died in the canvas left now years later he was he was given life in prison in eighteen ninety five or six somewhere in there by 1899 he'd been pardoned or whatever because he was good enough against somebody in high places salt to it get out of there okay and any TV nevis improve that you can see that's talking for making family and let's see the story that is Nancy this brother dinner somebody and some other people for that matter it's amazing how people hung together at after the Civil War because the guy who defended Kenneth in court after the war was one of the people that had her held captive in Summersville and this was a his name right down there was the telegraph operator their name turns but there was this other guy who was a spy and collaborator with Brooke who she would have gotten to know along with Kern's and probably befriended and he survived I'm guessing the way he was arrested he might have been killed maybe she saved him in that case and over but any event this guy was a lawyer in Lewisburg at the time and he said I'll take that and he got chemists off first time during the second time they'd only took it to about 45 minutes convicted that's the way the devil went but feelings were bad for a long time after the war but the amazing thing about this is there was so much that Union and Confederate White would have hated about each other because everybody who knew to anybody they hated and knew him personally by name all that kind of thing and the feelings would be bad anybody else and some of the worst culprits here if I'm not mistaken this guy was across an attorney for Greenbrier an attorney for our paper and on his side he went up to support the Confederates it was a former guerrilla by the way itself and down here you have June armored James Stanley and their spy buddy John Thomas booth and these are some of the guys who would have not thought of it they can shoot each other on sight and yet they saw fit to get passed there and do that and yet we can't get past some stuff that we deal with today gentlemen in politics and yet if anybody had a justification your edges forever wouldn't be this much guys but they didn't do that the editor of the paper here when these guys come there's there's not much but wait how st. pretty good I'll put them up our homes we're going to make our horses and buggies available we're going to put on the best food you never find anywhere else our reputation and Gruber our County as being the most hospitable place around it's not going to be tarnished because they're ganking Israel that was the kind of that and it paid off what can I say you have any questions I know I'm granting you quite long here yes sir and nobody knows for absolute sure but most people think it has to do with a militia unit named that maybe some of them had prior and to be called moccasins or moccasin Rangers would probably be parking back to colonial days of stealth fighting like Indians in the woods and that kind of thing and these guys were stealthy smart players and somehow they got turned into being so okay true but as far as anybody knows here in the park and wheeling paper there was a headline papers there there's a comment made by somebody the captain back some so and that was October 62 I was going to say that when you think of generally the man begin to get embarrassed by the activities of so much grow activity in the middle counties that they made the South Loop Mary oh absolutely Barnes and tearing up the bridges and wearing of the railroads eventually Steven horses of course and taking cattle that was alienating a lot of the people in the in western Virginia counties yeah and and that was a big point even among the Confederate commanders that that they were writing ledger and robert e lee and anybody else they could get a hearing with say you need to shut these guys down there doing this more harm than good because they're just basically out looking out for themselves but but it didn't stop even in 1864 they were making those same complaints to the Confederate command in Richmond because by that time although they were in Confederate cavalry units they were still accused of being doing the same thing yes sir do you think by poor references TK's yes come anymore what was pancake camp chase was a military post opened in Columbus for basically they were it was a training place originally but they needed some place to take political prisoners like we did can't get both and it started out being some place to take people who we can't prove they're bad people necessarily but we need to find out why we're just not going to let him go and until we can get a clean bill of health when these guys and it came to the ridicule early on is basically a resort place for comparison with just some newspaper accounts so well there are even bring slaves up here do you know the same saying they're being caught in the camp chase which didn't last very long all changed into a crackdown but basically especially if you were suspected to be a gorilla they would take you there or an innocent civilian they would try to get you out of there if you were there a wrong way but eventually it became regular military prison and for enlisted men and then they started taking people where officers may be in need a little push your treatment to Johnson Island so what you can see as things don't change much the big problem here is who's compatible who's a civilian who's a regular you know their attitude is look if you're a regular combat guy we owe you the due of a military fighter but then they didn't want to try on criminals either because then that got in bad publicity just like today some of these guys so I was going to ask about the later Confederate regiments I think that McNeill and some of the some of the parts and Rangers though they were still functioning but functioning more or less over toward the mountains worth de Randolph County I think in several areas what happened to settle that issue was the Confederate High Command basically at one point said we're disbanding all the Virginia state line Rangers the hybrid bunch of people they are in the armed military they said we're super scumbling that and everybody who is a partisan ranger or envious cell you need to either get the regular military unit or we will recognize most being McCain's Rangers which were more easterly than in Virginia but other than that you're not [ __ ] is it yeah but a lot of those guys di n't go underground don't they they kind of quiet down yeah they were just saying well I'm going to hide out around the house and take care of things but but I'm not going over there and the guard Richmond while my house is be a village you know that kind of thing or they were joined the 19th to 20th Virginia under rebelled Jackson did have company a call moccasin Rangers then they kept the name from dams his previous involvement with moccasin Rangers but but they weren't by any stretch the the original or all of the moccasin Rangers they they basically split up after material commentary did kind of went into the VSL units were the regular units or just stayed on their own I was gonna head to comment on general crooks later career you know yeah crook he can be brutal during the Civil War ironically he was one of the most effective Indian fighters in the West hey Tina he was the one who captured Geronimo hospitably brought him in live he had tremendous respect out west among Native American Indians and he was also with Custer and then Custer was out where he was but Herbert was in a separate command and he had already had his confrontations and was it was headed back for some ammo and supplies and whatever all else but he was a different kind of guy - Custer and Guster lost it and Kirk ended up being alive please but when Kirk died Indians actually went into mourning for several days because they thought they lost the friend in her of course that's why the regular military command wasn't wild about him because they thought he was soft on the Indians so steal his thunder and a little bit more about the Nancy Hart family about her myths and legends compared to some of the realities we what we do know what is that Nancy is that after the Summersville raid she just goes under the radar understandable she's not for murder she she was not helping while Jackson ever we know if she helped any Jackson it hadn't been mud wall because her husband Joshua was regularly enlisted in one of William Jackson's regiments he was in the company a with George dance so if she did anything it would have been for them but basically right after the war they walked into a versafine ground right there and trout fella next to what's called her out now they have two different farms there at one time and only when their son got out of jail in 1899 did they sit out and run because feelings have been bad enough already that they didn't want anybody call them out the middle nights and we're getting ready to bones so they headed up to a lumber camp in Webster County stayed there for a while Joshua died in 1907 leaving her alone so she basically hung around the dirty boys canisters who went to the state of Washington in 1910 so it's known they were in Washington State in 1910 and and they took a train out there and back and saw a sister maybe the Mary the guild that somewhere out in Midwest wherever she took off to and boy she hated being out there because there's just all those bad storms so you know look at what the way things have been stacking up this year who knows what she saw out there back then but they they came back from Washington state sometime after 1910 and she passed away of the meetings now where she's now buried that one picture I had there I'm working on her aunt Bertha's that's actually her grave that the families gathered around right there and that's her headstone if so that cells you know any geographical or other things about her just is that helping but she she was cheap got caught up in the fourth the excitement over she young gutsy person but I don't think I think she just wanted to be a family person and would be left and only toward the end of her life one seems safe that she wasn't going to get run down by the Yankees are processing personally have prosecuted did she even venture out to go to the trial for her son daughter by the way sort of the daughter and she wasn't officially adopted but she took a doctor a daughter grand new it was a girl known to the family through which she was 14 or 15 came to live with them and Sam's wife she was just the daughter Nancy never had herself and that daughter ended up marrying one locals in the community there who then bought their first heart and there is a bill say over then they sold that farm and the fella who married that daughter is probably related my guesses so that's another connection for Nancy and Hill valve canister anything else my wife takes care of that
