Is Hortonworks or Cloudera Better for Hadoop Certification? Which has more credibility? What are the differences?
Either. But why don't you go with MapR instead?I have experience with Cloudera training & certification, (which was great, but I'm sure it cost my company quite a lot of money then, given it was classroom training and they had to get Cloudera trainers from abroad). The tag of being a Cloudera Certified Developer for Apache Hadoop definitely certainly gave me confidence and some sense of satisfaction, but I guess what eventually mattered was I got a way to learn Hadoop well. However, not every company (or individual) can afford to pay for such training. Also there isn't much flexibility with time or resources for the learning process.MapR, one of the top ranked Hadoop distributions, offers free on-demand training (see Hadoop On-demand Training Courses). They have a wide variety of courses and the course material is detailed and I found them a bit more interesting (they have some new concepts on FileSystem side, ...) . I've completed a few and it was lot easier to manage my learning. I had the freedom of choosing my time and the topic I wanted to focus on. They have follow-up quizzes after each lesson and eventually one could register for certification.I think this would be a better way to go.p.s. I currently work for MapR. But these are my personal thoughts and based on experiences from before.

What are good 2012 Technology Conferences in US for Programmers?
It would help if you were more specific about the kind of programmer you are - there's a big difference between C++ game developer conferences, Ruby on Rails events, Agile methodology conventions etc. Each developer ecosystem has its own flagship events (for Microsoft developers it's the BUILD conference, which hasn't been announced for 2012 yet - for iPhone/Mac developers it's Apple's WWDC, Oracle have Oracle OpenWorld, the Rails community has RailsConf, for Django people it's DjangoCon US and EU, etc). Our site Lanyrd is an attempt to catalog all of the conferences and events happening around the world. If you sign in with Twitter we'll show you events your Twitter contacts are attending or speaking at, but you can also browse the site by topic. Here are a few pages that you may find relevant, depending on the kind of programming you do:Mobile: http://lanyrd.com/topics/mobile/HTML5: http://lanyrd.com/topics/html5-1/Agile: http://lanyrd.com/topics/agile/Open Source: http://lanyrd.com/topics/open-so...Java: http://lanyrd.com/topics/java/Ruby: http://lanyrd.com/topics/ruby/PHP: http://lanyrd.com/topics/php/Python: http://lanyrd.com/topics/python/Web Development: http://lanyrd.com/topics/web-dev...I hope that's useful. Let me know if there are any more specific categories of events you'd like tips on.

What language is oracle writing their public cloud in?
Oracle Public Cloud is a huge infrastructure. Let me break them in pieces.Softwares or the services that are actually being used by the customers like Java (or Weblogic Server), Database, MySQL, HCM, CRM or whatever. Now these softwares are developed by specific teams and most of them are independent of each others. These teams actually develop the softwares in traditional way i.e you can take the same softwares that are running on cloud and install in your pc or on premise infrastructure. These products expose some APIs through which they can be used in cloud. So, the language depends on product, but most of the products use JAVA mainly. JAVA is the defacto language in Oracle. But again a single product can use different programming language. MySQL is written in C/C++.The cloud portal or platform through which end user can interact with the softwares. This is the main interface through which you can interact with your services & this is the UI you will see if you register for Oracle Public Cloud. This part is mostly known Oracle Public Cloud platform development. This is mostly unified & the UI is mainly developed using Oracle’s own Javascript Extension Toolkit known as OJET . OJET is a collection of JS frameworks & tools. The backend is mainly developed using JAVA.The underlying programs and scripts that help communication between the services and clients. These scripts basically provision VM, install software, start/stop services etc. These scripts are mainly written in Python along with Perl and shell scripting.Other associated services like accounting, single sign on, metering etc are also part of cloud infrastructure which are again mainly written in JAVA but use lots of languages as per need. Some services may have mobile and desktop clients. So they are written using Java (Android), Swift (iOS), .NET (Windows desktop). You see Oracle Public Cloud is so vast that it is very hard to mention one programming language. Different team uses different programming language as per the requirement. But I can safely say JAVA is the single most used programming language in Oracle Public Cloud development.

What is the strangest medical thing that has happened to you?
When I was fifteen, my insides started turning to stone. It came on gradually. At first, I noticed it only when I peed - an odd feeling, in a deep place where I used to feel nothing. As months went by, my lower abdomen started turning hard, little by little. I was vaguely puzzled by this. I thought of the petrified forests of Arizona, formed when trees died in rivers and then, as ages passed, minerals got deposited where the organic wood and bark had been. Something like that was happening in me. Down deep inside I was being transformed, one cell at a time, to rock.I didn't tell my parents. My father and I were not close; in fact, we barely spoke to each other. My mother was loving but intrusive, generally acting as if my body were her possession. Being private and easily embarrassed, I was repelled by the thought of going to her.So I ignored it. I decided it was probably nothing. I was a teenager and was changing all over in subtle ways, growing breasts and hair and hips. Maybe my increasingly rock-solid lower abdomen was normal. One night during a sleepover, my best friend and I were watching TV while lying on our stomachs on her wooden floor. I could feel my stony innards pressing inside me uncomfortably. I asked her, “Hey… does your stomach ever feel, I don't know, kinda hard?” She thought for a while. “Well, yeah - If I do lots of sit-ups I can make it get hard.”“Oh,” I said. I did sit-ups sometimes, but I knew that my stealthily petrifying abdomen was not a six-pack.Mostly, though, I didn't think about it. After all, it didn't hurt. It crept through me so slowly I got used to it. And I wasn't a hypochondriac - I was sixteen; what could go wrong? So I did what I had always done. I went to school, I did my homework, I slowly turned to stone, I slept, biked, swam, ate Cheerios. In the fall of my junior year. I went out for a sports team and needed a physical. I wasn't even thinking about my petrified abdomen when the doctor put hands on me. But he did a double-take. “What's this?”I blushed. Not knowing what to say, I feigned ignorance. "Uh, what? No, I never noticed it." He prodded at me, putting his hands and fingers where I didn't want them. It felt like being raped. He asked me if I had a boyfriend. No, I mumbled, my face on fire. He brought my mother into the room. “She has a mass in her pelvis,” he told her. “It's the size of a five or six month pregnancy.”They stared at me. “Angeli,” whispered my mother. “Has there been a boy?”I couldn't speak. The truth is, there had been a group of boys - two summers before when I was away at camp. It was a terrible secret I carried; I had told no one and was terrified of anyone ever finding out. But I couldn't be pregnant from a shameful night two summers back. Could I? Except — what if a sperm had somehow gotten into me? What if a fetus had taken a while to get started, and then gone wrong and died inside me and was in there rotting now, just waiting to give away my secret. The truth hit me like a sledgehammer. My god, it was so obvious, and I had not let myself see it. How stupid had I been to not recognize what a hardening abdomen must mean!My mother was still staring at me. My throat closed up. I was like a butterfly skewered and mounted on a pin - body pierced, wings trembling, knowing I would never escape.I was sent to the local hospital for a pelvic ultrasound. My mother drove. Her face was pinched. As it turned out, it was not a two-year-old decaying fetus, made manifest to slut-shame me. It was a whole different thing.“It’s the size of a cantaloupe,” said the specialist who was going to take it out. He was addressing my mother, not me, and she was looking back at him with a stricken expression. He held out his hands to demonstrate the weighty melonlike object inside me. ”It’s been growing a long time. I don't know how she could have failed to notice it.” He glanced toward me. He seemed annoyed.“Is it cancer?” my mother wailed. “Will she ever have children? Oh, my God!” I wanted to strangle her. In the face of the doctor's words I was cool and distantly interested (a cantaloupe-sized tumor! Well, that certainly made more sense than a petrified forest!). but my mother throbbed and dripped with sticky and desperate emotions, thick as syrup, filling the entire room. You would think she was the one with the tumor.Driving home that day, my mother hissed at me, “How could you not have known it was there? You did know, didn't you! You knew and you didn't tell me!” I had betrayed her; that's what she meant. All these months, under my clothes and under the blanket at night, I had grown a lush dark secret in my body and had kept it from her. I was her youngest child and only girl. Maybe she had thought, up until that moment, that there was no part of me she didn't own.She spent all day on the phone, calling everyone she knew to discuss my intimate body parts in a loud and quavering voice. Loathing her, I stayed in my room. Eventually she barged in and clutched at me. “Don't be scared,” she quavered. “He said it's not likely to be cancer. Are you scared? You must be terrified!” Possibly she was looking in a mirror when she said this. I was not the least bit terrified. I was a watcher on a far-off mountain. I hated her smothering embrace, the forced press of her body, her arms straining around me as if she hoped to push me back inside of her. I took shallow, careful breaths, not wanting to inhale the drenched and cloying atmosphere around us. Finally she left. I understood I had dissatisfied her with my inert and passionless response. The air cleared in her wake, and I was glad to breathe and be alone.Surgery was scheduled and the tumor was removed. The operation was difficult because my mother, in an appalling scene, had pleaded with the surgeon to spare the involved ovary. (She was overwrought about my childbearing potential. I had snarled that motherhood was not my destiny.). The surgeon inadvertently punctured the cantaloupe while trying to peel it off the ovary. Later he described it to my mother, in front of me. “Full of mucus,” he laughed. “Disgusting. Oozed all over everything. I nearly lost my lunch!”My mother, always eager to please a doctor, laughed in the loud, false way she used at parties. “Almost lost your lunch, oh, how funny!” I gritted my teeth in rage as the two assholes joked about me. About my body, naked and unconscious on a table. Disgusting. Ha, ha.The tumor turned out to be benign - a mucinous cystadenoma. The funny thing was, about a year later it all started again. Once again my insides started turning to stone. And once again I did nothing as months went by. Finally, a day came that I felt burning pain down in my pelvis. I stood up at work - eighteen years old and doing a summer temp job - and announced that I had to see a doctor. I called my pediatrician, told him the mass had returned, asked him to refer me for an ultrasound at the local hospital, took a bus to the hospital, got the ultrasound, had my suspicions confirmed. That night at dinner, my mother put peas and rice in front of me. We ate in near-silence. Then my father shuffled away as usual, and my brother disappeared up the stairs. I looked up from my plate and said to my mother, “The ovarian tumor has grown back. I had an ultrasound today. I’ll need a ride to the surgeon’s office next week.”She gaped at me and started wailing. What did I mean, what had I done, why oh why had I gone to the doctor on my own without telling her?I sat at the table. I felt like a grown woman: inviolable now, hard and cool - stone all the way through. I shrugged and stared her down.

Who would win in a fight: Batman or Wolverine?
To decide who would win the fight between Batman and Wolverine, we must analyse the battle from their perspectives and then proceed to the final judgement. However, we must keep in mind that the environment would play an important factor in deciding who would win. For that we'd take two scenes of battles, first in a close space, say inside a building; and second, in an open space say, an open field. STAGE 1 : BUILDINGBATMAN (thinking): The walls and door show claw marks, indicating the opponent will be using claws as a weapon. So, the opponent is either a beast or a mutated human. Keeping a distance from the opponent would be necessary. Long range attacks are helpful. Must keep in mind that the beast might have acute senses. So darkness won't be much in my favour. WOLVERINE (thinking): Whatever his armour is made of, I must make sure I rip them off. What powers can he possess?*Wolverine draws his claws*BATMAN: They're not bones, they seem to be made of metal. My kevlar won't be a strong defense. Wolverine advances towards Batman ready to rip his suit and the flesh beneath it.However Batman dodges it as a reflex and uses his Grapple to move away from him. Wolverine slashes a pillar of the house.WOLVERINE: Damn, he is agile enough to dodge me. But he hasn't shown his powers yet. He used a grapple to get away. And the belt. Sort of gadget holding utility device. *turns around* Where did he go?BATMAN: That was close. The way the pillar was cut, it can't be any usual metal. Oracle (in the radio), help me find a weak spot. I can't hide for long.*Oracle in the Bat cave gathers information on Wolverine*A moment of silence in the room as Batman waits for Oracle to gather information on his opponent as Wolverine looks around for his counterpart. The silence makes his senses more acute as he tries to listen any small decibel of noise his opponent can create.ORACLE (to Batman): You're fighting against a mutant, who possesses animal-keen senses, enhanced physical capabilities, and powerful regenerative ability. His claws are covered with an unknown metal, Adamantium. It is almost indestructible. You can-----Batman lowers his heartbeat as he listens to the information. But he is too late.WOLVERINE: I can hear your heartbeat going low. But that's not going to help!!*Wolverine breaks the pillar and kicks Batman, who falls and hits the wall. His radio transmitter is broken*Wolverine holds up Batman and draws back his claws to punch him in the face. Batman's cowl holds some of his punches but it starts to wear down from the continuous attack of Adamantium-strengthened punches. Batman starts to bleed.WOLVERINE: WHO ARE YOUU??!! YOU HAVE NO SUPERPOWERS AND YET YOU STAND AGAINST ME!!! YOU HAVE COME TO SEE YOUR END!*Wolverine draws his claws and it pierces through the shoulders of the combatant*Batman groans and loosens his fist. But not as a sign of giving up, instead he threw some grenades to the ground.WOLVERINE: Whaa---Before he could say anything the grenades flash and blind Wolverine. The noise and the flash from the three flash grenades distracts him and he releases Batman to the ground.Wolverine comes to his senses to find himself alone. He can no longer sense any vital signs of Batman, meaning he is outside his radius. Angrily he turns around to move out of the house when he sees two missiles incoming. Before he could do anything, the house is blown up, with him inside. Batman is seen getting out of his Batmobile to see if anything is left to destroy. He sees the house turned to ash as he gets back to his vehicle. But it's not an easy win.His systems in the vehicles show there's movement inside the rubble. He looks outside through the windshield to see a someone walking out of the house. He appears burned but slowly his body heals, as his face show an emotion of wrath dawned upon it. Leaving no other choice, Batman sends a code through his vehicle to send one of his strongest suits from the Watchtower: Hellbat. STAGE 2: OPEN GROUNDBatman leaves the Batmobile and waits for the berserk samurai to join him in the final battlefield. The angry mutant draws his claws and runs towards the dark knight. But Batman stuns him by throwing electric batarangs at him. It slows Wolverine down, but not for long. The suit is taking it's time to signNow it's destination. Batman has to stall him till then.BATMAN: You have been killing people. You have shown no mercy. What good does it do to you? You're a human, not an animal.WOLVERINE: WRONG! I am the Wolverine!Wolverine hits Batman with his claws and injures him. Perhaps he has broken his ribs. The suit would be arriving any moment now..The HELLBAT arrives and both of them could see it at a distance. Batman uses another smoke grenade to stun him. When the smoke is gone, Wolverine finds Batman at a distance but not in his suit. What was his plan then? It was then he found the suit attaching itself to his body. But why would Batman do that? Wolverine tried to rip off the pieces from his body but he cannot hold it for long. Soon he is inside the suit and he finds himself weakening. Yes, the suit absorbs the body's metabolism to use it in the fight and prolonged effect can lead to death. Batman must have accelerated the absorbing rate of the machine. But this doesn't stop Wolverine, the derived energy is released as blasts from the suit. As he cannot control the suit, the blasts are sprayed everywhere and Batman has to dodge it. After some time the machine calms down as it has derived all energy from Wolverine, leaving him to an old, vulnerable form. Any moment, his body recovers, the machine absorbs the energy, leaving the beast in it's cage. (For representation purpose)Batman moves close to the suit, holding it's prisoner.BATMAN: You underestimated my superpower. You ignored my only superpower I have. I never give up.So, I leave the judgment to you, to decide who won the fight.

What is your biggest regret in life?
Writing anonymously because I have somewhat famous business in Pakistan and I don’t want people to know how big of a coward or asshole I was.I belonged to a rich but conservative family. In my family we were not allowed to mix freely with the opposite sex as my father was very strict in this matter. I studied in the most expensive school of the city. I was an average student who was more into bunking classes then learn anything new. I had money and I had rich friends and those two things meant bad things. In my 2nd year of college, I failed in chemistry. My father was ahsmed of me and asked my mother to get me into some tuition so that I will not be a reason for his shame again. So, I joined Miss Rania tuition in which both boys and girls used to come for tuition. There I saw the most beautiful girl in a scarf. Her eyes a rare shade of grey color. She belonged to an Upper Middle class family but her family was way more conservative than mine. One day I was sitting with my friends and they were teasing me about lack of a girlfriend in my life. Girlfriend were a norm amongst my friends and their families also did not object because one of my friend literally told his mother on telephone that he is with her girlfriend. I was shocked and thought if my parents ever found out that I had these kind of friends then he will definitely kill me. In Pakistan pre-martial sex is extremely frowned upon but my friends used to indulge in these activities quite frequently. Few weeks later, my friends challenged me that I cannot make that beautiful scarfed headed girl my girlfriend. I don’t know what happend, I was tired of their teasing and decided I am ready to get a girlfriend. If they are enjoying why not me.After that day, I started to court that girl, lets call her Jia and me Ahmed. I started to sit upclose to her and passed smiles whenever she looked my way. I thought that she was also into me. I used to steal books from her bag and return it back to her just so I can talk to her. One day Miss Rania gave us am assignment but unfortunately Jia forgot her assignment at home. Before submission I took out my assignment and tore the first page in which my name was written and then wrote her name on the second page and gave my assingment to Jia which she refused to take but I convinced her. After this I asked for her number. She gave it to me. We used to talk daily until 3 to 4 am in the morning. I had a car so I used to go to her college whenever I can so that I could meet her.In this routine few months passed. I was not a religious guy as my family was. But Jia she was an angel and she never used to miss her prayers. One day we planned that after college I will pick her up and spend the day together. We visited Lahore Zoo which was totally different experience with her. She was fun, extremely fun to hang around with. One day we were discussing about my friends and their relationship with their girlfriends.Jia: Why your friends indulge in those activities?Me: Which activities?Jia: You know those like what people do after marriage.Me: *to tease her I asked* *“*What exactly people do after marriage?”Jia: You know don’t be such naive…Me: Do you mean sex?Jia: Yes…Me: I don’t know its their life.Jia: hmm… You know I really love you… *she said shyly.*Me: **Shocked !!**Jia: Say something….Me: How do you know that you love me?Jia: Because I am afraid…Me: What are you afraid of?Jia: That I can cross any limit to be with you. I like your laughter. When I am not with you I only think about you. When you are around me I can’t think straight.Me: Wow. Why didn’t you tell me this before?Jia: I don’t know. I told you now.Me: Well, I love you too if thats what you want to hear.Jia: I don’t want you to say anything that you don’t believe.Me: Ok. Well its getting late I will drop you off.Jia: Ok.Few months later, I don’t know what got into me. I asked Jia something…Me: Jia, I want to ask you something.Jia: Anything jaan. *Jaan = My Life*Me: I want to have sex with you…Jia: **SHOCKED!!!**Me: What?Jia: Why? Why not wait until our marriage?Me: Because it’ll probably be after 5 to 6 years and I don't want to wait that long.Jia: But its a grave sin.Me: I dont know. All my friends are enjoying it why not us?Jia: Because I am not that type of girl. How could you ask me this?Me: Are you not my girlfriend?Jia: I am. but its ridiculous what you’re asking me to do.Me: Yes or No.Jia: What got into you?Me: Yes or No.Jia: No.Me: Ok. Let’s go I’ll drop you to your home.Jia: Ok.Now when I think back how big of an asshole I was. I started to behave rudely with her. I did not show great interest in her activities. One day out of nowhere:Jia: What happend to you?Me: What do you meant?Jia: You were so sweet. What happend Ahmed? Do you not love me anymore?Me: I do love you but I am the same.Jia: No you changed?Me: Is that so?Jia: Yes.Jia: Do you still want to have sex with me?Me: What? Why do you ask?Jia: Just tell me….Me: Yes.Jia: Ok.Me: What Ok?Jia: You can have me.Me: Why? What happend now?Jia: You happend. I cannot be the reason behind you staying angry.Me: wow.Jia: Ahmed, I can do everything for you. I want to give you all the happiness I can but promise me something?Me: Anything…Jia: Don't Ever Break Me.Me: I promise I will not.Aftee dew days on a weekend I took her to my friends apartment and we had sex. After 15 minutes, She started crying. I asked her if she was hurt, what happend. She did not say anything and continued crying. She punched me on my shoulder:Me: What was that for?Jia: Are you happy now?Me: No… I cannot be happy when you’re crying like that.Jia: You had me. You saw me. Everywhere.Me: Are we not supposed to see eachother?Jia: Just drop me home.Me: No. First tell me whats wrong?Jia: JUST DROP ME HOME… she shoutedMe: Okay. After that she did not contact me. When i tried to contact her she would not pick up my call. I was unable to see her at her college because She always came and went with the driver. One day, I received a call from her. I was excited.Me: Hello.Jia: *started crying…*Me: what happend baby?Jia: You happend?Me: Tell me whats wrong?Jia: I think I am pregnant.Me: This is not a good joke.Jia: I am not joking you asshole. I am pregnant.Me: How do you know? We used protection.Jia: I checked. Three times. I am pregnant.Me: Oh my god….Jia: What Am I gonna do?Me: We will take care of it…Jia: what do you mean?Me: I meant we will have an abortion. I know a friend and he ca-Jia: You asshole. You giant prick. You motherfucker… how could you?Me: What?Jia: I already committed a huge sin. I will not commit another grave sin and kill a life.Me: Are you crazy? What you’re gonna do? What about our future?Jia: I don’t know. And she cut the call. After few days, she was in kitchen cooking food with her mother at home. She passed out. They took her to the hospital. In hospital they came to know that their beloved daughter was pregnant. Her mother asked her furiously what happend? She told her everything. Then her father did the most cruel thing. He kicked her out of her home. She went to her friends house. After that her father my father. He told my father everything. My father became so furious with me that he kicked me out of our home too. He kicked me out of the will. When I was on the main door he said to me that I am dead to him. It was just like a movie script. I thought these things happen in Bollywood movies not in real life.Ironically, I went to my friend house with nothing but a backpack. There I called Jia.Me: Jia. You ruined our life…Jia: I ruined. You were the one that wanted to have sex.Me: Blaming eachother won’t solve anything.Jia: What happend?I told her what happened and she told me what happened.Jia: Have I ever asked you of something?Me: *sigh*… No.Jia: You are a Man in our society. Nobody will say anything to you. On the otherhand I will be casted out of the society. This is the sad truth. Please don’t leave me and our child alone. Please do the honorable thing. Marry me and don’t let your child be known as a bastard.Me: How I don’t have anything in my name? What will we do?Jia: Let’s take one step at a time. The next day we got married in court as my friend arranged everything including an apartment for us to at.After 15 days, I got a job in a supermarket working as a salesman. I became fed-up as I use to cater to some of my college friends at this supermarket and their gossips did not went unnoticed. Later on, I dropped out of college because I had no money. I started despising Jia. She used to prepare everything for me when I entered home. She cooked burnt food sometime which used to anger me so much that I would not eat anything. When my son was born, it was one of the best days in my life. But it was short lived as I had no money to pay for maternity ward. I took loan from my two friends.I had a baby.I was in debt.I blamed Jia for everything. After few days, Jia was nursing our boy and I was sitting on a sofa deep in thought. She asked me we need to prepare a nursery for our boy. I became furious with her. I yelled at her that we don’t have enough money for food and she wanted to build a nursery. I told her this cannot be my life. This cannot be my son’s life. She was just smiling looking at our son, I asked her furiously why you’re smiling? She just looked at me and said “Why I will not smile, I have a beautiful boy and the guy I love is my husband. I would never trade it for anything in the world”Her words changed my thinking and attitude. Why she loves me so much? What have I done to deserve her love? From that day, I started working hard to give my wife and child the life that they deserve. In addition to my job in supermarket, I took an internship with an Advertising Agency. I worked so hard for the last 11 years that now I have my own Digital advertising firm and sales training company. I have total of 41 employees working for me.I had two more beautiful boys with Jia. The one thing I still regret is our families still haven’t forgiven us. I meet my mother and brother all the time and they keeps me updated. I just wish Jia’s father and my father could forgive us.I regret that I forced Jia to have sex with me.I regret that I doubted her love for me.I regret that I brought shame to my father.I regret that people questioned Jia’s character because of me.I regret that I treated Jia so horribly. There are many things I regret but I forget these regrets when I look at Jia’s smiling face and my three cute boys. Life works in mysterious ways. I just hope our fathers forgive us and my children can know the great love of a grandfather.

Can the Celtics beat the Warriors?
They’d certainly like the chance to try.Elite offensive point guards who are capable of taking over games and seem almost magically oblivious to the defenders trying to stop them when they get in the zone - Irving vs. CurryVersatile wing who is capable of spacing the floor and defending individually at a very high level - Brown vs. ThompsonMismatch wing who is a threat as both a scorer and a playmaker - Durant vs. Tatum/HaywardVersatile big man with outstanding intelligence, skill, and finesse who can pass and defend multiple positions - Horford vs. DraymondCousins presents a potential mismatch, but even here the Celtics have Aron Baynes as a potential matchup option. Baynes doesn’t have anywhere near Cousins’ offensive skill but does possess the strength and physicality to at least stop him from running rampant. And of course, there’s no guarantee Cousins ever fully returns to his pre-injury All-NBA level of play.Bench: Andre Iguodala and Shaun Livingston might be the two best reserves on either team, but the Celtics have a number of strong options with Baynes, Rozier, Marcus Morris, and Marcus Smart (if he returns). Boston easily has a playoff-caliber nine or even ten man regular rotation, an extremely useful luxury that few teams can afford. All of these matchups ultimately tip in Golden State’s favor, which is why only one of these teams is a repeat NBA champion and the other has yet to even appear in the championship round. But it’s no coincidence either that the Celtics have split the regular-season series with Golden State in each of the past three years, with one of their losses coming in double overtime. The Warriors simply have too much talent and can overpower anyone, including Boston. But the Celtics have historically done an excellent job at getting under their skin and disrupting their rhythm. As much as I want to say otherwise, I’ll be honest: that’s probably not good enough to allow them to win a seven-game series. But it’s enough to steal a game or two, and even if Golden State wins the series 90% of the time, there is still that 10% chance that the stars align enough times for the Celtics pull off the improbable upset.I mean, even if I knew Golden State was guaranteed to win the series, you could easily sign me up for something like this:Game 1: Golden State wins easily. Cousins flirts with a triple-doubleGame 2: Celtics’ defense makes things messy and threatens to steal a win in Oracle, but the Warriors surviveGame 3: With their backs against the wall, Celtics feed off of their home court energy and ride some white-hot early shooting to ultimately win and avoid going down 3–0Game 4: Stephen Curry and Kyrie Irving each go for 40+ points, including a period in the third quarter where both players are constantly one-upping each other making wildly difficult shots, but Durant and Curry are too good down the stretch and Golden State takes game 4Game 5: Celtics fight desperately to stave off elimination, smothering Curry and throwing every player in their armada of elite defenders at Durant, but some timely shots from Klay Thompson and an unexpected clutch three-pointer from Draymond help them pull away to secure their third straight championshipWarriors in five doesn’t look like a close result, but every one of those games that I described would be amazing to watch.

Are you a self-made data scientist? How did you do it?
People call me one, it’s on a business card, so I guess so.I have a background in the social sciences and specialized in aspects of theory and research methods that helped build the foundation of who I am as a professional now. There was little coding beyond SPSS. It took me 3 tries to pass trig. I had taken a few statistics classes in undergrad. My Excel skills included very basic formulas and on a good day I could do some very rudimentary pivot tables. Most of my work was very germane and very niche.I was accepted to two programs in grad school as a dual MA student- one in Public Relations and one in International Relations. I accepted the offer thinking that two degrees is better than one. As a dual MA student we were required to arrive during the Summer and take courses in graphic design. I quickly found that I had a knack for making very simple, minimalist designs that conveyed a lot of meaning to the end user, however, I was hoping to obtain a job in national intelligence so why on earth would I need to be able to make pretty looking things in the signNow suite? I dropped that major thinking that I would never use the skills, but in my spare time I would redo major websites, logos, brands, and publication images for fun.At the same time I would quickly master a topic area, get bored, and move on to another. Same with methodology. The traditional college sequence of math courses wasn’t working for me so I bought some econometrics, probability, and linear algebra texts on Amazon and started reading, but beyond understanding concepts and being able to complete exercises I didn’t really see much applicability in the material. I tried to take a few SQL and R courses in the early MOOC days, but never managed to complete them. Meanwhile I was a bit bored with my course work and as soon as I obtained enough subject matter expertise to reasonably turn a research project into a dissertation I would eventually dissuade myself from doing so because 4 or 5 years seemed like way too long of a time to spend making a case for an argument that very few people would read or care about.A few years passed. I got a fairly entry level job, but it required a lot of Excel knowledge. I quickly realized that every single month we were basically hand-entering financial information from one spreadsheet into another. I built some macros. Soon I realized that I could just query the same info from a few servers and return the result as my finalized spreadsheet with a little bit of SQL. In a few weeks I taught myself enough VBA, SQL, and Python to completely automate my job. I got bored since there were no more challenges and I left.At my next job I was the only “Analyst”. I had to take basic business problems and figure out how we could analyze product metrics to create value propositions for clients of all verticals. Every single A/B test, RCT, or pilot was completely different. Use cases required everything from basic statistics to Naive Bayes models. All that time switching specialities in grad school, all the research methods, and a continued interest in statistics came into play. I finally had some real life examples to use to learn R, which at the time had very few packages today such as the amazing dplyr or ggplot and no IDE such as RStudio. By the time that company disbanded I had self-started and managed enough projects to be proficient in these tools and also dusted off those old linear algebra and other math books. The guy who couldn’t understand why he needed to master math about triangles in college (3 times!)was now fairly skilled in a level of math that would have taken another three years of college to get through. I needed real life examples to learn, not hundreds of problems that emphasized monotony over inquiry.I still felt pretty incomplete. I started Googling subjects I was interested in, looking for data and diving in. Many jobs have coding challenges or tests and I would find copies of those and run through them continually. At this point I was still pretty unsure of myself because unlike many data scientists I had no background in Computer Science, my college transcript had a pretty dismal Math track record, most people seem to think that applied econometrics and statistics without a degree in either means that you weren’t good enough to get past the entry level, and finally my work history was so varied that it was hard to make a case for my skills and abilities.Much to my surprise I actually received a lot of responses for the positions I applied to. At the end of the day there is not a single skill-set that a Data Scientist must possess, but they MUST be able to obtain data from wherever it may lie, process that data so that it is usable, conduct analysis of that data, and distribute the results to their end user in an actionable way. My approach to learning data munging came in handy as I had no preference on querying language, data structure, or anything that someone with more formal experience might have. I learned what I had to get the data I needed, just like in the past. R had advanced so much since I had last learned it and Python was already a powerful tool, so I learned as I went. When I made a mistake, I Stack Overflow’d it, but I also took the time to learn what it was about what I was doing that was causing the error. I learned to write functions when my work was consistent enough to warrant doing so. I started to write C++ when I really needed to optimize my code. Oh, and those graphic design skills- they’re probably the most useful part of my job as my end users are not data wonks and need to see very complex model outputs in a very clean, understandable manner. So, I guess I’m self taught, but I don’t really see it that way. I really like finding new challenges that I know very little about initially and applying various parts of my background to create projects that combine all of my experiences. There is no way I would be close to what I am today if I didn’t have each of these disparate components. I have worked with many people that are experts in specific areas of Data Science that make my skills in that area look amateurish, but I can do the same to them in other areas as well. Our jobs are different and we apply the skills we need to succeed and use our work and challenges to become better and better.Everyone learns differently and there is no “right” way to teach yourself, but after seeing many MOOC superstars be unable to do much with their “skills” when they weren’t fed curated sample data and walked through problems, I highly recommend that people follow their intuition and internal motivation and learn based on the challenges they face in their work and are motivated to pursue. I would be extremely unhappy as just a visual designer or developer and I will never be a master of either, but I continue to improve in those areas because it makes my work better. Find a problem that interests you, tackle it with the best tools and methods to get a result, repeat!
