greetings from the center for new testament restoration or the cntr for short this introductory video is the first of several videos explaining the operations of the cntr the cntr was founded by alan bunning who began working on the project in his spare time in 2003 allen later retired from his faculty position in computer science at purdue university in 2020 to begin working at the cntr full-time what you never heard of the cntr before well as one reviewer put it it is the coolest new testament critical project you might not have heard of the work of the cntr has been praised by numerous bible scholars and has been in collaboration with several different organizations the cntr project has already been used to create two new greek new testaments including the tyndale house greek new testament and the bunning heuristic prototype greek new testament which served as the basis for the unfolding word greek new testament currently being translated into numerous languages all around the world the motto of the cntr is bringing scientific textual criticism to the masses textual criticism is the science of studying variant readings in copies of ancient manuscripts in order to reconstruct the contents of the original autographs as accurately as possible this is a highly technical process that has largely been obscured to most people but is extremely important for determining the text of the bible for example consider this passage of the lord's prayer in luke notice that the words in red are not in the niv nasb esv and most other modern translations this is not because modern scholars are not translating properly but because the words in red were not in the greek text that they were translating from so which version is correct and how would you know for most people the processes of textual criticism has largely been a black box where some mysterious process has gone on and then out pops a bible but there are many steps that take place behind the scenes that have not been visible to the general public most people are only aware of the last step where they might scrutinize what type of translation has been made but the vast majority have no visibility into the earlier steps which are the most critical because that is where the readings for the text are assembled those steps remain closed to most people due to incomplete data restricted access prohibitive cost and lack of training that is why the cntr was created to open up the black box by providing a complete data set with open access and free resources in a manner that is understandable for the average person the cntr provides the first complete set of electronic transcriptions of all of the earliest greek extent manuscripts up to the year 400 a.d such an endeavor took over a decade to complete and it is the first such compilation ever created that brings all of the early witnesses together in one place this data set contains transcriptions of over 200 early witnesses many which were the first to be created and still cannot be found anywhere else extensive metadata has been compiled for each witness and the text of each witness can be viewed against images of the original manuscripts to verify their accuracy all of these witnesses were then combined together in a computer-generated collation using a sophisticated alignment algorithm providing the first complete view of the early new testament the collation also includes several modern critical texts for reference but perhaps the most significant feature was the addition of an interlinear view where for the first time in history the average person can see where the variants are and have some understanding of what they mean the additional interlinear information provides a rich source of information for in-depth bible study all of the early witnesses as well as the modern critical texts have all been parsed to the same scheme providing the unprecedented ability to analyze and compare the different texts there were over thirty thousand words in the early manuscripts that had never been parsed before the cntr website currently gets about one thousand hits a day opening up resources to countries all of the world there are currently several projects underway that are producing bible translations directly from the cntr website several other projects are currently being developed at the cntr all to be released in the future under an open license none of the work at the cntr is being done for the sake of academic head knowledge but that many would ultimately apply this knowledge and be born again of the spirit by repenting of their sins and receiving jesus christ as lord of their lives this presentation only scratches the surface of the work being done at the cntr for more information or how to contribute to the project please consult the other videos in this series or the documentation located on the cntr website
