[Music] on behalf of Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital Plymouth we thank you for choosing us to take care of you or your loved one we know that you may have questions about your upcoming surgery therefore we have created this educational video to help reduce any anxiety you may be feeling by introducing you to people who will be part of your surgical team and give you some helpful tips on how to make your surgical day go smoothly when you walk through our doors you become our number one priority welcome to be ID Plymouth hi Liz hi my name is Dottie come on I'm gonna get you all ready for this procedure after your surgery is scheduled you will have a pre anesthesia telephone call or an in-person appointment to prepare you for your surgery about seven to ten days prior to your procedure you will receive an automated call reminder of your appointment whether in person or via telephone please remember to read and complete the information requested in the envelope you received from your surgeon's office if you have an in-person pre-admission testing appointment also known as PA T you will enter our main entrance located off o Berry Street once you are in the main lobby you will either go downstairs via the elevator or stairs to the p80 area you will need to bring your insurance card driver's license photo ID and medication list to this appointment alternatively you may be instructed to participate in a telephone screening that will be scheduled through your surgeon's office the goal of pre-admission testing is to have the healthcare team review your medical and surgical history and discuss your medications including what to take and what not to take prior to surgery you may have a brief medical exam and will be provided with instructions specific to your surgery our goal is to ensure you have an understanding of what will be happening on the day of surgery answer any questions you may have and make certain you are provided with the safest experience possible 24 hours prior to surgery you will receive a pre surgery telephone call this call will confirm your surgery time your contact information for the person who will accompany you and review medications or guidelines specific to your surgery it is important to listen to all directions given and write them down keep these things in mind do not apply any hair products lotions or creams makeup or other skin products brush your teeth and use mouthwash but do not swallow water or mouthwash take any medication as directed during your p80 visit with a little water bring the storage cases for your contact lenses glasses or dentures if you wear them wear clothing that is clean comfortable and loose leave hair pins or hair pieces at home leave jewelry extra money and other valuables at home bring your insurance card and identification bring a copy of your advance directive if you have one bring something to read or do while you are waiting bring a cashier's check cash or credit card to pay your co-payment or deductible limit the number of people who come with you to surgery bring overnight things if you'll be staying overnight such as something to read or do any necessary clothing and toiletries on the day of your surgery please park near the main entrance and proceed through the main lobby straight to the surgical services reception area it is important that you arrive on time on the day of your surgery your arrival time was scheduled to allow enough time to prepare you for your procedure it also allows time for any last-minute tests your surgeon or anesthesiologist may order you and your visitor will be guided to the waiting area when your preoperative preparation is complete staff will escort family to your bedside if the patient is a child an adult may accompany them to the preoperative area Surgical staff will communicate with your visitors as often as possible your family member or visitor will also be provided with a confidential case number that is associated with your procedure the case number can be found on the Oh are tracking board located in the waiting area which will be used to track your surgical progress please remember surgery and waiting times are not exact each patient is given the time and attention necessary to ensure proper preparation and a safe procedure once you arrive in your designated preparation area you will need to change into a hospital gown you will also have to remove your eyeglasses contact lenses and dentures before your surgery if you can't leave these items at home please leave them with a friend or family member who is waiting for you during surgery you can ask for an extra blanket if you are cold we will do everything to keep you warm and comfortable we will store your clothing in a personal Locker good morning Liz my name is Karen I'm one of the pre-op nurses here at the hospital and I'm gonna help get you ready for your procedure today with dr. James the staff will perform safety checks frequently while you are being prepared for surgery they will ask you your name date of birth type of surgery and to identify the body part where surgery is to be performed for safety reasons these questions will be asked multiple times by your clinical team members including your surgeon registered nurses anesthesiologist and certified nurse anesthetist we will also ask you when you last ate or drank your nurse will take your vital signs use a cardiac monitor which allows us to monitor your heart a blood pressure cuff to monitor your blood pressure and a pulse oximeter that gives us information on oxygen levels in your blood and how you are breathing your nurse will insert an IV to help keep you hydrated the IV is also used to administer medications hospital staff is required to ask about advanced directives including power of attorney and healthcare proxy please bring these with you on the day of your surgery if you have questions about advanced directives including healthcare proxy guardianship and power of attorney please visit the hospital's website for more information once your initial preoperative visit is completed your visitor may come back to stay with you until you are ready for surgery how are you today at this time you will also have the chance to meet with your surgeon he or she will ask you additional questions depending on which type of procedure you are having your surgeon may perform a very important safety check where they will write their initials on the area you will be having surgery your surgeon will also confirm the procedure listed on the consent obtain signatures if not already in place and answer any questions he or she will also confirm the status of your health since they last met with you we encourage you to ask any questions or express any concerns to your surgeon at this time hi mrs. Smith how are you today I'm dr. Oliver with anesthesia nice to meet you in addition to your surgeon you will be greeted by a member of the anesthesia team to discuss options for your anesthesia and what would be most appropriate and safe for you they will also speak to you about what your recovery from anesthesia will be like following your surgery they will review all of your questions prior to asking you to sign a consent form giving permission for the anesthesia team to care for you during surgery as you enter the operating room the first thing you'll notice is that it's very cold and bright we will provide a warm blanket to keep you comfortable bi deep limits operating rooms are equipped with the latest technology and most advanced equipment available as you go into the operating room you will be with members of your surgical team in addition to your surgeon and anesthesia care provider there will be surgical technologists and nurses who will perform a variety of tasks during your procedure we want to assure you that your safety is our highest priority we go above and beyond national standards for infection prevention and cleanliness in our operating rooms we will perform additional safety checks to help keep you safe as you go into surgery the length of your surgery depends on the type of surgery you are having please be assured you are always the most important person in the operating room when your procedure is over you will be moved to the recovery area also known as PACU or post anesthesia care unit as you wake up from anesthesia nurses will care for your immediate needs administer pain medications and keep your family updated on your recovery they will ask you to rate your pain on a scale of zero to ten pain is to be expected following surgery the goal of pain management is to make the pain tolerable not eliminated your pain should not interrupt your ability to relax rest or move around in bed it is better to manage your pain before it becomes severe your doctors will make a pain relief plan that's right for you based on the kind of surgery you've had and what you will need to recover often more than one type of medication is necessary this is called multimodal pain control and can help reduce the pain you feel right after surgery and the lessen side effects from some pain medication you may also experience nausea and vomiting as you begin to recover from surgery we will do our best to make you as comfortable as possible the PACU nurses will ask you to cough and to take deep breaths from time to time to help you recover from anesthesia while this is taking place your surgeon may meet with your family members to discuss your surgery and answer questions we know that during this time your family will be anxious to visit you unfortunately it is not always possible for family to see you in the recovery area however if you are staying in the hospital following your surgery someone will guide family members to your room if you are going home the same day as your procedure your nurse will review with you and your family discharge instructions for your home care if you have questions about your post-operative care after your home please contact your surgeon's office if you need to stay in the hospital our team of healthcare professionals will do everything possible to make your stay comfortable please don't hesitate to ask if there is anything we can do for you [Music] we know that preparing for surgery can feel overwhelming every member of your healthcare team is here to ensure that you receive the best surgical care available your health and healing are important to us we encourage you to ask any questions you may have to your health care team at any point during your stay thank you for choosing Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital Plymouth for your healthcare needs everyone at the I D Plymouth wishes you a speedy recovery [Music] you
