How is Costco able to not only compete against Amazon but also thrive? What does Costco have that Amazon doesn't?
Costco has one thing that almost no other large retailer has: unassailable trust.Costco’s buyers — the people behind the scenes who source products and negotiate with suppliers — are amazing. They do a fantastic job seeking out the highest-quality products and offering them at the lowest-possible prices. This creates an incredible experience of value for Costco’s members. As a member, I can walk the aisles of Costco and gladly make an impulse purchase of any item on the shelf and know that it will be an excellent buy. I don’t need to have 6 different brands of pasta or 36 different alarm clo...

How do you find leads for any startup idea?
The online stuff sounds “sexy” and seems like the easiest way forward but it’s not. In fact, after working with out 100,000 entrepreneurs since 2007, I know for a FACT that the online stuff is 100% why people fail. The goal of a startup should be to make a profit as quickly as possible. Many of the people that I work with see a profit on day 1 (literally). How? They focus on the right things.Power BaseThese are the people you do business with on a regular basis. This is the pizza place you and your family goes to once a week. The person who cuts your hair twice a month. Think of every person or business you exchange currency with on a regular basis…that’s your power base. This “list” is enough to make ANYONE a few hundred thousand per year. Very few people use it. Uber did, Air BnB did, Groupon did, Amazon did, Apple did, Microsoft did…but that guy who rents a Lambo for an hour to shoot a Facebook ad video…he didn’t. Listen to who you want.Cold Prospecting With Curiosity and a TestAbout 6 years ago I “started” a “business” that failed miserably. Basically what happened was my daughter started kindergarten and came home with a fundraising packet. As soon as I saw it I knew it sucked…but I also know that I had to buy something. Within about 30 minutes I came up with an idea. If I could put together a packet of products that people actually wanted and the price was right, they’d buy like crazy. No more $7 rolls of wrapping paper that can be bought in Wal Mart for $2.Now, the Lambo renter would tell me about Facebook ads, email lists, content marketing, blogs, and YouTube. I wanted NONE of that garbage. The next morning I went to drop my daughter off at school, found the PTA president and said “Hey Brian, I got the fundraising packet last night and I had a question. I’m not even sure if this would work or not and it might be a terrible idea, but if I could come up with something like this but it had products in it that people really loved at a price that was better than Wal Mart, Target, and Amazon, and the school still made the same amount of money would you at least be willing to take a look at it?”He said YES! Then he went on with this big long story about how they knew it sucked but it was the way it’s been done for years and everyone has always wanted to change it but they had no way to do it.I went home, hired someone off Odesk (now Upwork), had them scrape every name and phone number of every PTA president within 100 miles of me and I started calling.I don’t remember the exact numbers but around 70% of the people I talked to said YES, that they’d listen to the idea and give it a look.Less than 24 hours after I had first saw the “problem” I had serious decision makers wanting to look at the solution that I thought up in my head.I had no Facebook page, no twitter account, no website, no t-shirts, no ping-pong table in my office (that I didn’t have), no YouTube videos, and no email list.I just went straight to the source and asked them and it worked. Now, why did it fail? Simple. Politics! I didn’t realize that in order for me to pull this off I needed to go through school boards, approval processes, etc. I had thought that I could just get the PTA presidents to say yes, run a fundraiser, have my markup, give the school half the money, and make a killing. In theory, if all I needed was the PTA presidents, this would have been a 7 figure business in the first year. But the sales cycle would have taken a minimum of 8 months and I wasn’t willing to do that so I let it go.Here’s how you do it in any industry…“Hey (decision maker), my name is (name)…and I’m calling because I saw your (whatever) and…to be honest I’m not even sure if this would work or not but I came up with an idea that (does something they might want)…it’s not even ready yet and I’m not even sure if I could do it or not but the reason I’m calling is if I could do it would you at least take a look at it?”The script reads dumb…I get it…but when you SAY IT word for word it should read like you’re just having a conversation. Do this 100 times a day FROM DAY 1 and you’ll outgrow ANY business focused on “online stuff.”The Online StuffJust to be clear, I am NOT saying that the online stuff is bad or doesn’t work. What I am saying is that the online stuff is bad and doesn’t work in relation to your question. Startups should NOT be out there spending money on SEO, SEM, Websites, Logos, Etc. Startups should be spending 100% of their time either getting customers signed up or getting people results. That’s IT!After you’ve gotten clients and you’ve gotten those clients the results you are promising, then it’s time to slowly transition into the online stuff WITHOUT stopping the stuff that got you clients in the first place.Another big mistake is people will start doing the two things I mentioned above, get 10 or 20 clients from it, then stop and try to build some elaborate sales funnel on Clickfunnels for the next 6 months.STUPID!Get your first few clients through WORK. Then continue to WORK for clients while you’re building something that’s a little more passive (the online stuff) on the side.Good luck with your startup!-Kenny Cannon
