The broader market will grow 50x, and with that, the market will fundamentally change.At a product/technical level, there will be at least 3 important evolutions as the % of contracts signed on the web that we see at EchoSign:Seamless web workflow (integrations). Today, it's still relatively nichey to, for example, create a document in Google Docs or pull a form from DropBox or Box.net, review/edit/collaborate on the document, send it out to get signed, and then have it all stored on the web, in the cloud. In 3-5 years, the entire contracting workflow and process will be 100% web and cloud based.100% web-based contract. Today, only a minority of e-signed contracts are created purely on the web. Instead, most contracts are still local content - a local PDF, or a local Word document. In 3-5 years, the contract will be 100% web-based and completely abstracted from not only paper, but from an off-line contract creation process. This makes e-signatures a requisite, not optional, part of the contracting process.Dramatically more functionality. There are number of possible reasons:- technology has come a long way towards the conversion of paper to digital, but there remain factors that have not yet been overcome in a robust way. For example, some office documents simply can not be signed digitally due to regulatory or industry restrictions. The tools to determine if a digital document has been tampered with are not readily available, making a paper document, stored in a safe environment more secure (for now). - since the tools to go paperless are not yet completely available, and a regular part of our daily life, there is still a generational factor that leads to reluctance to move away from what's known. Paper is still tangible. - capturing signatures on paper is simple and an accepted practice. The tools to capture that same signature digitally are only now becoming accessible. That means the original copy is still needed, even if it is also stored digitally. - you can't staple digital copies. That may seem odd, but consider that a stapled package of papers will have some obvious consistencies to it. A multi page digital document could be modified in any number of ways and it would be difficult to detect a change from the original source. I live in Canada and the government is starting to go more digital. This is a good trend and will make it easier for businesses to also modify their paper archiving requirements. Places like the Apple stores have virtually eliminated paper from their systems. The move to paperless is underway!The necessary technology tools are becoming more pervasive and we are probably only a few years away from having more examples of completely paperless offices in North America.

What are some best practices in keeping a modern lab notebook?
Around 2005 I published a paper on something I'd been working on, intermittently, since I took over the project in 1994. The guy I took it over from had worked on it since about 1991 or so. He had long since moved on from the lab, as had most of the other people who had dabbled in it in the meanwhile.I went to the boxes on the tops of the shelves, looked for the one marked "1991", and took down Ethan's lab notebook. I flipped through a little bit and found the dose of mutagenesis he had used, the time course, the date and passage at which the cells had appeared, and all the tracking info. Noted it down in the "Materials and Methods" and moved on to the next paper.Between 1991 and 2005 we had used the following methods of electronic storage: 5-inch floppies, 3-inch floppies, zip drives, Bernoulli drives, CDs, and DVDs. Of those, we could still easily read the CDs and the DVDs; reading any of the older media would have been a major job just to find the proper drives. That's not to even mention the various software packages, computer drives and so on, many of which were no longer compatible with the then-present hardware.Fourteen years isn't even that long a time. But how many of the software packages that are being considered will be compatible in 14 years time? But the notebook, written in neat blue ink on old-fashioned paper, was still perfectly usable; as are paper-and-ink notebooks from hundreds of years ago.If you're fine with your lab notes becoming obsolete (and therefore, your work being unpublishable) within 5 to 10 years, then go ahead and consider electronic lab notebooks. If you'd prefer that you will be able to publish and support your work in the future, I recommend paper and ink. Since no one will listen to me anyway, I will at least urge you to have a plain-text version automatically generated, perhaps with markup (or markdown) if you must. Plain text may be boring, but it won't go away in five years.(Added later): That's not to say you can't take advantage of electronic notes as well as having a pen-and-paper notebook, but the electronic copy should be secondary. I have used Dokuwiki as a secondary notebook, taking advantage of searchability and linking. I chose Dokuwiki because behind the scenes it saves entries as plain text (with markup), so that the data are still going to be present even if/when Dokuwiki shuts down.
