What incident on an airline got you a good compensation?
I was on a KLM flight from Houston to Amsterdam sitting in economy class when I noticed an older lady who needed some help from a stewardess but she didn’t speak nor understand English. Neither the stewardess nor anyone else could understand the lady and shortly there was an announcement on the PA system asking for anyone who knows Polish to come up front. No one went up front. However, I know a bit of Ukrainian language which is somewhat similar to Polish. By then anyone could see and hear that the lady was getting very nervous and tense because nobody could understand her. I volunteered to translate and after trying a different combination of words was able to figure out that the lady was afraid that she will not be able to find her connecting gate in Amsterdam and will miss her flight to Poland. The stewardess assured her they were aware of the situation and someone will meet her after the plane lands and she will be escorted to her connecting gate. Feeling pretty good about helping a fellow passenger I returned to my seat. A few minutes later a stewardess comes over to my seat, asks me to get my carry-on luggage and to follow her. It was a Boeing 747 with an upstairs business class area where I was deposited for the remainder of the flight. Keep in mind that transatlantic business class seats from Houston are really expensive, around $5000 USD or more. It ended up to be a win-win situation for all involved. Thanks for reading.EDIT - thanks everyone for reading and your kind comments. I am amazed by response. However, I’d like to add another story below. One should always try to help given the opportunity. A long time ago when I traveled to Honduras to visit my college friends I didn’t know that there is a $10 airport exit tax payable at the the customs/passport control area of the airport. By the time I was leaving I already spent all my money. Thus, I found myself in a dire predicament because without paying this tax I was told that I’d removed from the flight. I was starting to panic. There were two flights leaving at the same time, one to Houston and another one to New Orleans. A stranger from the New Orleans flight saw my desperation, approached Honduran official and paid the tax on my behalf. What a relief!!! I tried to get his contact information in order to pay back the money after getting back home but he told me not to worry about it because what goes around comes around and he also said to me that we all should spread good deeds given a chance. With that he boarded his plane and left me standing there. To this day I don’t know who he was because he never introduced himself but he was a good man who taught me a valuable lesson that given a chance and being able to do so one should always try help.Cheers you all.

What was your most embarrassing airport/airplane experience?
5th April 2016, is the date when I said goodbye to my family and friends and went to Saudi Arabia for employment . It was the first time I went to airport. I didn’t had a single clue how to get proceed for my flight!Anyway my time comes to say goodbye to my beloved one-I went inside-Embarrassing moment no. 1Somehow came to know that I have to get the Boarding pass. Went to the Airline counter and presented my luggage. The luggage was 2.5kg extra. I have to take out extra stuff in front of them.Embarrassing moment no. 2After getting my boarding pass I got the wifi signal at the airport. Sitting there I dialed FB call to my friend who was sitting in Saudi (also helped me to get the job in Saudi). He: Hey Momo (my nickname) what’s up bro? Did you get your luggage passed and what about the boarding pass?Me: Yeah, all good. Look - my boarding pass. He: Good good. Have you passed the immigration counter?Me: What’s that? (face palm)The family next to me started laughing, even they were listening my conversation. In Saudi Also my friend and his colleagues busted into laughter. Honestly, I didn’t had any clue what does it mean. Anyways he explained to me the procedures and I ran to the immigration counter.Embarrassing moment no. 3I wore a a dark blue shirt (you can see in the picture) and a bell-bottom pant.Same color as in the picture! I was looking very horrible. I normally prefer Jeans over formal pants, but this pant my uncle bought for me and my mom insisted to wear it for my journey. Everyone on the airport was staring me.Embarrassing moment no. 4My flight was in the air. I saw people watching movies and listening songs. Naturally, I do wanted to do the same but I didn’t had the screen (My seat was next to the gate and the screen was folded besides it). Even my co-passenger sitting next to me didn’t know about this. Lack of knowledge, I started to listen whatever was coming in the headphone without screen. One Air hostess came to me and opened the screen…………….. ;) with a Sarcastic look.Embarrassing moment no. 5I wanted to Pee very badly, but because of my clothes it was embarrassing to cross the people and go to the toilet. Anyways when it was uncontrollable, I stood and went to the loo. After doing my stuff i went out and wanted to return to my place but Air hostess have started to serve the food. Both the lanes were full and I have to stand infront of the people in my bell-bottomed pant…… (which i was desperately ignoring)Last (it was a faceplam moment)The guy who was sitting next to me was having his food served by the air hostess. He also had a Beer can!At start when we had a conversation, I came to know that he is Muslim. I asked him-Me: What is this? (pointing towards the beer can)He: You also want? wait!!Me: No. But can tell me what is this? He: Oh This. It’s beer.Me: I guess it is Haram (Prohibited) in Islam. He: What? (Laughed). Who told you this. It’s like Pepsi or Cola. Come on you also have one.One of the biggest faceplam moment for me….

What are common scams in India?
Common Scams in India:Scene 1: Aadhar mobile number update:Went to a private Aadhar e-seva kendra, filled form and was ready to submit. Assumed it’s going to be nominal charges for same. Lady said 300rs. I said bye bye.Went to e-seva kendra. This time all done. Lady asked for 50rs. I said I know its 25rs.She said “Sir we have to pay rent as well.”I said “As you are asking very less compared to others I will pay 50rs.”Felt bad about it later. Complained to UIDAI via twitter. Got reply that they will register an official complain and take necessary action. In addition to this its very common that these e-seva center charge anything between 100–300rs for new Aadhar registration(should be completely free) or update(nominal charge of 25rs). Saw it happening in one instance, raised my voice but no one supported. Seems everyone else was just wanted to get their work done and I was creating a nuisance.Scene 2: Mobile number portability:Went to Idea store. With commanding voice, I said “I am here for MNP”, as I was giving them a new customer. Got reply from lady “minimum recharge of 475rs will be needed for MNP”. I said “MNP charge is 19rs, what recharge I do after that is my choice”. But this lead to nothing. Left the store.Visited a local idea retailer. Inquired about MNP and he said 178rs minimum recharge. Didn’t want to argue again. Paid the money and left for home. Felt bad again, later complained to idea_cellular and TRAI via twitter. Still to receive a response.Even for mobile and Aadhar linking some retailers charge money, its supposed to be completely free.Scene 3: Flash Back - Last monthHad a bad mood and my train was about to leave. Thought some water could help. Went to stall and asked for two water bottles. Vendor asked for 40rs(20rs per bottle, MRP was 15rs). I became furious and scolded him left and right. Got my money back (10rs). Complained to local DRM via twitter. Got response that action will be taken and immediate fine of 500rs is charged to vendor. You see what I am trying to say, here in our country(not only our country) people always find a way to dig out money or more money by this means or another, many are aware of it but many just ignore it. I know I can’t be idealistic all the time but it disturbs me seeing people’s common lust for money around me.Call it a scam or whatever, but it’s part of our life, it’s more of a mindset and reflection of our ideologies. We might accept it, ignore it or fight against it.Sometimes it seems like endless cycle, because “We the people” always find innovative ways to scam each other.Take Care.PS. Purpose of this answer not to brag, but to make aware. What you do after that is up to you.****Made few corrections, Thanks for views, comments and upvotes, If this helps even 1% of who read, my effort was worth of something.********Corrected Aadhaar update charges as 25rs, uidai official twitter handle communicated 25+taxes hence the confusion. I would like to thank all who appreciated me in comments. Still you see I was not perfect during handling these situations, hoping to get better with that.********Update: Idea care responded, got call from manager of said idea store, he apologised and asked me to visit again. He said there are no charges for mnp and recharge is optional. I told him to mention this everytime time any customer comes for mnp rather then projecting a mandatory recharge. Also asked to make sure his team members follow that. I said I or any of my friends will be visiting store anytime and will complain again if same incident happens. Hope this is some kind of win.Got update regarding e-seva kendra complaint as well. “Fine is imposed and warning is issued.” Couldn't check personally but this is official reply.****

What is the difference between a W9 and 1099?
W-9The Purpose of Form W-9 is to request the taxpayer identification number (TIN) of a U.S. person.Form W-9 is used by persons required to file information returns with the IRS to get the payee's (or other person's) correct name and TIN. For individuals, the TIN is generally a social security number (SSN). However, in some cases, individuals who become U.S. resident aliens for tax purposes are not eligible to obtain an SSN. This includes certain resident aliens who must receive information returns but who cannot obtain an SSN. These individuals must apply for an ITIN on Form W-7, Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, unless they have an application pending for an SSN. Individuals who have an ITIN must provide it on Form W9.Withholding agents may require signed Forms W-9 from U.S. exempt recipients to overcome a presumption of foreign status. For federal purposes, a U.S. person includes but is not limited to:1)U.S Citizen2) A partnership, corporation, company, or association created or organized in the United States.3) Any estate etc.1099- MISCYou may be required to file/report returns for certain types of payments made/received during the year. For example, you must file Form 1099-MISC, Miscellaneous Income, to report payments of $600 or more to persons not treated as employees (for example, independent contractors, vendors, free lancers etc) for services performed for your trade or business. We should not use Forms 1099 to report wages and other compensation you paid to employees; report these on Form W-2 (Wage summary). This form can report a huge variety of things, and the way you report the information from this form can also vary widely. Some are common and most important factors to drive from 1099 Misc are:BOX 1- RentBOX 2 –RoyaltiesBox 3- Other incomeBox 7 – Nonemployee compensation. If you work as an independent contractor for substantial periods during the year, then the IRS will treat you as self-employed. Self-employed taxpayers must report 1099-MISC income on a Schedule C attachment to their tax return. In addition, you are also liable for Social Security and Medicare taxes, which you calculate on Schedule SE and attach to your return. Thanks!

What are some of the most interesting posthumous diagnoses done on famous people?
Thanks for the A2A.Alexander the 3rd of Macedon - known as Alexander the Great. We really don’t know what killed him. But an interesting new theory may have nailed it.Alexander the GreatAlexander’s death in Babylon in June 323 BC has been one of history’s most confounding cold cases. Two different accounts of Alexander’s death have emerged through the fog of history. One account - by Plutarch (a Greek biographer and essayist 46 AD - 120 AD) stated that around 2 weeks before his death Alexander spent a night and the next day drinking with a friend - Medius of Larissa. This ‘bender’ resulted in the young ruler becoming struck down with a fever and becoming unable to speak.Plutarch reported that Alexanders soldiers were concerned, and to allay their fears were allowed to file past the Alexander as he silently waved to them from his sick bed. I’m sure that reassured them…The second account, by Diodorus (a Greek historian from the 1st century BC) suggests that Alexander drank a large bowl of wine, was struck with pain and then experienced 11 days of weakness, and died after experiencing extreme pain - no fever was mentioned. These two accounts make the case that Alexander was a ‘problem’ drinker but did it kill him?Poisoning, Malaria, Typhoid and Pancreatitis ( the latter my personal favourite considering his age and extensive alcohol intake) have been advanced as causes, as has virtually every other ailment of the ancient world. But the one confounding thing about his death is that his body refused to decompose in the heat of June, the hottest, driest month of the year in the region. Why didn’t he decompose? After Alexander’s death chaos erupted, there was no nominated successor. Alexander’s body was reported to have been left unattended for days during the confusion while they schemed, plotted and fought over the succession. At the end of a number of days someone obviously thought “uh oh”, and returned to the body, which was found to be unexpectedly in perfect condition. Imagine the relief. The body’s condition gave currency to the idea that Alexander’s near god like status had protected him from bodily corruption. However, it also gives rise to a new and frightening theory from Dr Katherine Hall, a New Zealand academic.Dr Hall states that “along with the reported delay in decay, the 32-year-old was said to have developed a fever; abdominal pain; a progressive, symmetrical, ascending paralysis; and remained compos mentis until just before his death.”This would be a good description of the neurological disorder Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) suggests Dr Hall.He did not rot because he was not dead. Just paralysed…As Alexander’s deputies fought over his replacement Alexander remained alive, barely breathing and unable to move.He was thereafter embalmed in honey in a golden casket. My question; did the GBS kill him? Or the honey immersion?Damn…The diagnosis fits, is this the answer?New Zealand academic offers new explanation for Alexander the Great's death

Have you ever had someone spill their drink all over you on an airplane? What did you do?
As part of my career, I have flown over 1 million miles, mostly in North America. Sooo, I have had lots of interesting experiences. This one was a little unique.I needed to fly from San Jose to Seattle to attend a lunch meeting, so I planned to catch the 6:30 AM flight to Seattle and return on the 4:30 PM flight. It was a rare non rainy day in Seattle so I just had my laptop bag and away I went. This was a last minute trip and I had the pleasure of getting assigned a non reclining seat in the last row. But at least it was an aisle. The flight was non eventful and I dozed off as usual, waking up as I heard the flight attendant approaching with the beverage service. As she moved the cart towards my row something happened to the wheel. It either twisted or got stuck and the cart stopped. She pushed and nothing happened and then she pushed again, more violently. The 2 metal containers on the top of the cart holding the hot coffee flew off and dumped their contents all over me. It got the entire left side of my body and as I was wearing a seatbelt, I couldnt move to get out of the way.Pandemonium kind of broke out, with flight attendants bringing me napkins and wipes so I could start getting cleaned up. Then the pain started. I had burnt the left side of my face, my left hand, my left thigh and groin area. They started bringing ice and trying to deal with the situation, with one saying “You can't be burnt. This is Alaska airlines. Our coffee is not that hot”. As the plane was full I was forced to sit in a seat that was rather damp. The rest of the flight I filled out forms, applied ice to the effected areas and enjoyed a 1st class muffin.Upon landing, I deplaned and at the end of the jetway there was a full medical response team waiting for me. There were 2 paramedics and an engine company of firemen decked out in full gear. Boots, helmets, long yellow jackets and a stretcher.I was surprised but I guess the pilot called and arranged the welcoming party. I stood there as the paramedics examined me, having everyone in the terminal walking by, staring, wondering what is going on. They applied a topical spray to my face and hand and then said, “please remove your pants”. I looked at the female paramedic and said “I'm not taking my pants off in the middle of the Seatac airport. We had a brief discussion, I signed forms stating that I refused transport to the hospital and further treatment and I departed the circus area.I looked horrible and definitely unpresentable for a customer meeting. My blue dress shirt and pants had coffee stains running down the left side. As I worked my way to the car rental everybody was staring at me.Fortunately there is a large mall a couple of exits up from SeaTac so I pulled in and waited for Neiman Marcus to open. I explained my situation, purchased some very nice clothes and waited in a changing room, sitting in my underwear while the tailor hemmed my new pants and ironed my shirt. It was 10:30 and I was good to go. At 11:15 the customer called and cancelled the lunch meeting. (Ironic) I spent the rest of the day hanging around the office applying an ice pack to my face and hand. But wait there is more. When I got to the airport for my return, I shared my story with the agent and naturally got a 1st class upgrade. I was sitting in seat 1A, next to a clumsy oaf who managed to spill a glass of red wine all over the right side of body and my new clothes. It was a day.A lawyer from Alaska called me a week later and offered me 100,000 frequent flyer miles to settle the incident. Since I travelled virtually every week, I just kind of laughed.I ended up with some minor burns, a couple days of discomfort, some free new clothes (Alaska paid), $5000 for my trouble and a decent story.

Why is stealing signs frowned on or technically banned in professional sports? If it is inevitable and part of the game at that
There is a certain competitive element to trying to figure out what an opponent is doing in any sport, and baseball happens to lend itself perfectly to some sort of "spying." But, how that "spying" is defined or executed makes all the difference when determining if it is illegal.A third base coach flashes signs to a batter and baserunner using his or her hands. The coach needs to relay a message, and there is no way it can be done without some sort of code. But, is the other team supposed to close their eyes during this exchange? Of course not.The signs need to be intricate because important information is being shared. Under these conditions, it is not frowned upon for a member of the other team (or staff) to watch the signs and try to steal them. Again, a code is being used, and part of the mental game is to crack said code. The line is undeniable crossed if any sort of equipment or technology comes into play. If the signs are recorded and watched at a later time, it is a problem. If they are being translated in real-time using some sort of algorithm, it is not debatable; it's illegal.Few would argue that a sport should not be decided by technology, and it would be bad for baseball if it became a game of cameras and code. Therefore, if we unilaterally remove technology from the equation, we can revert back to the stealing of signs using one's eyes. Like the first example of a third base coach giving hand signals, "stealing signs" is not actually the main issue. How it gets relayed to the team is.The most common occurrence of the wrong way to relay signs happens with a runner on second base. If he or she can read the signs from the catcher and decipher them, it is valuable to get that information back to the batter. There are a number of discreet ways to do this that blend into the game, itself, such as varying the lead one takes (crossing legs might mean "curveball" while walking backward might mean "fastball) or fiddling with a helmet a certain way. But, the keyword in this scenario is "discreet."If the baserunner is blatantly stealing and sharing signs, it is a big problem. Why? Because the baserunner is essentially embarrassing the other team. Baseball is also a game of pride, and telling the world that an opponent is bad at hiding its signs is a form of disrespect.Players and coaches make efforts to protect their strategies because they have strategies worth protecting. This also means they have strategies worth stealing. An opponent trying to steal signs or read lips is not nearly as frowned upon as doing it openly. Therefore, a team can hire a lip-reader. It just shouldn't be advertised as such.
