Help me with industry sign banking kansas letter of intent
>> Good morning. I have the
privilege -- I'm the dean of Washburn Tech. I have the
privilege of being here today to share a special moment, a
special time with special students that will sign Letters
of Intent today. As the video says, this dream started four
years ago, started with one institution, that was Washburn
Tech. Three years ago three other colleges joined us in this
from Tucson and Wisconsin and Wichita. Last year we had 14
other colleges join us from North Carolina to Oregon, up
into Minnesota signing thousands of students like they are going
to do Todd to sign up for technical education. Today
there is 38 colleges across the nation, students getting
ready to enter the workforce. That's the next generation of
workers available to our workforce development and the
industries here today. To our instructors, faculty, everybody
here involved, I want to say thank you, this does not happen
without your help and your support to make this a special
day for our students. For the parents, thank you, to the
friends, relatives, grandparents , all involved in this, thank
you. For the students, of course, absolutely, thank you.
As of today as it starts, it really is a free reeling day, we
really want you up out of your chairs taking photos of the
person that is signing that you're had here for today making
it a very special event. You are our guest today. If there
is anything we can answer, any questions you may have, we want
to know the answer of that. Europe now part of the wash
Washburn Tech family, we want to treat you that way. Thank
you for being here today. We'll be up and down and talk about
different opportunities here. At this time I would like to introduce the interim DPAA,
Vice President for academics here at Washburn University and
Washburn Tech and is a president of the foundation and is
visionary on wanting our students to achieve.
Thank you. >> [Applause].
>> Good morning. Welcome, everyone. This is such an
exciting day! We did not applaud, but I want to go back
to something that Clark said, the Dean said, we started this a
number of years ago, we were the only institution, it is
truly Clark's vision right here, the team here, now we have 38
other technical colleges that are joining us today. I think
that deserves applause. >> [Applause].
>> Dean: What this vision brought is
for us an opportunity to really be excited about education and
to really recognize that we have a tremendous responsibility at
Washburn to be able to -- you have entrusted us with the
ability to educate you, prepare you for the workforce, business
has entrusted us with the ability to prepare their next
generation of workers. We're truly at the important
intersection of moving our economy forward. We're very
excited to be here today to celebrate you and to celebrate
the opportunities that you have through education at
Washburn Tech. Thank you for being here. Thank you to all of
our employers who trust Washburn Tech and other
technical colleges across the state to prepare the workers
workers for our future. We thank the parents for
entrusting your students to be here. All of the adults,
continuing your education, we're so excited you're here.
Have a great day as we celebrate your signing at
Washburn Tech. >> [Applause] .
>> Dean: Thank you very much. What's happened over the
last few years is we have will an opportunity to partner with
business and industry, we're the home of four national training
centers at this time, case construction, our partner here
today, Fiat Chrysler. Two years ago we were approached if we
wanted to be one of the first ten institutions in the nation
to be training centers for Fiat Chrysler. Through hard work of
our staff, that's happened. I would like to ask Mr. John Fox
to come forward from Fiat Chrysler. He's the national
director for dealerships all across the United States for Fiat
Chrysler and is a good friend. We have gotten to know each
other, a tremendous commitment to our students and the area of
auto technology, auto collision. >> [Applause].
>> John Fox : (Video playing). is great to be here. Dean
Dean, doctor, everybody here at Washburn Tech, this is a great
opportunity for us to come and build a program and build a
opportunity with a local community around the country.
The video does a better job than I do talking about, number one,
the products we offer. It really comes down to our dealers
are partners in the community. I know we have a couple of our
dealers today, a couple of our staff. Folks from Briggs
is here and possibly a couple of others. We decided
we had a challenge to face. Our sales continued to grow and
what we found out is we did not have the infrastructure, the
people really, the people in the dealerships to support that
growth and to help you as a consumer when your vehicle is in
for service. How did we go about, try to attract students
to the dealership not only to be technicians, but to be service
advisors, sales consultant consultants, others.
We built a program focused specifically on automotive tech
figures had technicians. We have 78 programs around the
country at colleges and technical schools like here at
Washburn Tech. I'm proud to say as you heard Clark say,
Washburn was one of our original 10. As Dean said, the team
started national signing day, he was influential in helping us
develop the program and to bring it to life.
When you think about what are the job opportunities -- I know
parents and students alike are interested in that. What do I
do after I complete a agree degree? What am I doing
with my degree? We'll hire over 500 in our companies around the
country and a number in Kansas. You see that we need good
quality men and women to be future technicians. I wanted to share with you a
bit about the demand so that you feel comfortable that the time
and the dollars you're spending are well worth it. The program
has grown, as I said, now we have over 80 locations, 78
locations around the country. We wouldn't have been able to do
that without the support of NC 3, you saw NC3 in terms of the
video and our dealer partners around the country. I thank you
for your support. Students, I look forward to
you going through your journey and graduating and working in
our stores as interns, apprentices, future automotive
technicians. You have a lot of excitement -- as you saw on the
screen -- there are things you may have heard, the new hellcat
demon coming out, we have a lot of really fun products you'll be
able to experience. Thank you very much. Dean, thank you.
>> [Applause]. hour in a training facility in
Michigan, is that right? How would we know that?
>> You may know that, Clark! >> I never have been at
135-mile in my life, sir. We don't do that locally. That
would be breaking the law. We at Washburn never do that kind
of stuff! Thank you for being here today, thank you.
I would like to ask Matt to come forward, CEO of the To
Topeka Chamber, you may have heard this last week or so there
was an announcement made about starting a training center on
the east side of it. Topeka and a 5.5
million-dollar investment, the training center and a lot of
people were involved in that and we're here to talk about the
Chamber and the commitment to technical education.
Thank you. >> [Applause]. cool videos. I forgot my cool
video! I will tell you I think this is a fantastic day.
I look over there at our future workforce, our future economic
prosperity, our future community leaders, I get excited. I'm
doing a lot of fun things this week but nothing is more fun
than what we're doing right now. Hats off to the dean, to the
Washburn Tech, who as you heard, they led the nation in
developing the first of its kind national technical letter of
intent signing day. Now in its fourth year with nearly 40
ceremonies around the country. Let's give them another hand
for Topeka once again being the leader.
As I have said, this is an outstanding day for students
students, parents, companies, really the entire
community. I feel of see a lot of proud parents, but again I
just want to tell you these students that are embarking on
the journey, I hope you know how valuable you
are. I hope you know how valuable you are to our
companies. I hope you know how valuable you are to Shawnee
County, Topeka, those in this room. You're our future leaders
and future economic prosperity. You have our support as you
pursue your goals through education. We're privileged
to partner with Washburn University and Washburn Tech and
in the creation of Topeka training center. Thank you to
the entire team for their continuing to work on this
project. I also saw Scott walk in with the Kansas Board of
Regents and he deserves a lot of credit for the learning center.
We appreciate the work he did to pave the way for us. The
partnerships that are developed in collaboration with employers
and Washburn Tech continue to benefit our community and future
workforce. You will benefit of the opportunities for years
to come, I congratulate you on signing your letter of intent
and wish you much success in your career and life.
Thank you. >> [Applause]. we get closer and closer to the
signing opportunity here I need to make a few introductions,
there will be folks coming in and out throughout the time at
different times throughout the morning here. I want to
acknowledge some folks here, Greg from Train Corporation here
representing Train, John, Snap-on, that's a huge,
huge thing to be benefiting our students on this campus and John
works with us with that. Richard, management for both
campuses, and very creative and recruiting students and getting
the students to the institutions . Thank you.
Dr. Munzer, we work a great deal together for students
transitioning from this campus to the applied study program at
the University and Pat will be involved with an extra signing

for students transitioning from this campus, this location to
the University campus. We'll have students signing what we
call the ECHO signing and we'll be involved with that. John,
chairman of the board of Regents for the Washburn Board of
Regents. Thank you for being here. Bruce, I'll talk a
bit about Bruce in a minute. He's our emcee for this program
today. Scott, his name was mentioned earlier, he is first
approached us with the concept of building something on the
east side of town, he's now Vice President for workforce
development, cony BEE who works for Scott, she's the lady with
the money, we talk nice to her! Matter of fact, we call, she
answers how much do you want? We don't always get it, but we
have the conversation about attempting to get it for grant
moneys and we appreciate that that.
Ann, fourth district for the Kansas Board of Education, jay
Scott will be here, Matt, of course, is here, Barbara, very
much involved in the east side project and working closely with
workforce development on our campus.
Also Gabrielle, I saw him here, if you're 40 and under and
want to get involved in what's going on in the workforce
workforce, Dr. Gabrielle, we appreciate you
being here today. Neil fisher, tremendous partners
, you will see later on we have a presentation of a check for
Washburn Tech coming from them. Jim Martin, vice president for
finance, he's the money guy, very much involved and
appreciate his support. Ryan Frederick, he's in the back of
the room, he's chairman of the Kansas technical education
authority. For all of you, welcome, thank you for being
here today. >> [Applause]. this activity over to the voice
of national technical and letter of intent signing day,
for those that don't know, we go back many years ago when I was
coaching high school basketball, he would get on late hat night,
KLS radio, win or lose, you listened to them, it
kept us awake on the way home is what it was. We go back many
years. Bruce, welcome. [Applause] .
>> Let's have another round of applause for this guy.
>> [Applause]. >> Again, he took his coaching
mentality and brought it to technical education and signing
a letter of intent. There is something about putting your
name on that dotted line that says I'm making a commitment
and that school in this case Washburn Tech is making a
commitment to you. It really is unique to have business partner
s here today. Again, for moms and dads, jobs are waiting. T
hat's key when you're a youngster that signs on. For
students, to know that there are jobs waiting for you when you
get the technical expertise to do that and industry is here
waiting for you and standing behind you, standing with you to
be a part of this day. That is -- appreciate the business
partners that make this day possible as well.

over many, many years. Washburn Tech has led the charge
in technical education in Kansas especially northeast
Kansas of which we're proud to be a supporter of Washburn Tech.
In this day and age the recruitment of technical
students going into technical careers is reaching a crisis
level. We want to do all we can support to support technical
careers and especially construction. As I talk about
construction I realized at an early age when I started working
in construction there is no other industry if you're willing
to work and have a little bit on the ball where cream rises to
the top quicker. So we really encourage the students that go
into our industry. We need them .
With that being said, I would like

At this time we're proud to have the governor of the State
of Kansas and the governor who is certainly been a great
supporter of tech education here in the state but to introduce him is academic affairs and
president of the Washburn foundation.
>> Thank you. I'm not sure that the governor needs an
introduction, I want to take a few moments. He's a live longer
from Kansas, this is going on in 40 other places this morning,
I imagine that Kansas, Topeka is the only one where the
governor is actually attending. That's a testament to the
vision that the governor has had for tech education in the State
of Kansas. Under his leadership and under special
funding that came about during his time as governor we have
seen tech education grow dramatically in the State of
Kansas, that's good not only for our students, it
is good for our businesses and it is good for the economic
prosperity of Kansas. We're very excited he joined
us today, we're truly thankful for the work that you have done.
Please join me in welcoming him.
>> [Applause] >> Congratulations to all you
students coming here. I want to start off by saying
congratulates congratulating and thanking
Washburn Tech. They have been just a model institution for the
country. I think you started the signing program here and now
it is going on in 40 different places across the country
because they recognize the importance of recognizing what
someone is doing, stepping up, taking responsibility, moving
forward with their life, they're getting something that will be
able to help them have a better life and the whole staff here,
way to go! Good job! Let's give them a round of applause! It is impressive.
A quick thought. I think what you're seeing now all
across the country is people looking at high schools
differently, not just -- I went to high school, you kind of had
a track that you went on, you had school where you had it, you
ended up with four years, then you kind of start deciding,
well, which way do you want to go at that point in time and
most of it was trying to direct people towards college, some of
it not, okay, we're done with this. You're 18, finish.
We're not finished! You're never done learning. I think
the thing now you're seeing evolve is a lot of times people
in high school they say I want a technical skill, one that will
pay me well when I get out. Others are saying I don't want a
technical skill but I want my first year of college done at
the Community College and others are saying and we're seeing it
happen, people on graduation night from high school are
graduating from the Community College the next day. They're
having that many hours that they have accumulated while in
high school. They're looking at high school totally different
about what can I do that really puts me on a career path in a
way that I can move forward with my life rapidly, well and with
good paying jobs. We need highly-trained technically trained
people in this society today and we need a lot of them.
We're short of them. In many places across the country,
particularly in our state. We have a growing demand and the
biggest complaint I hear is that I can't find folks, I can't
find people that are technically trained to do this, we can pay,
we can pay well, we can't find the people. That's why I just
really applaud you for stepping up and taking this challenge on.
A final thought. I hope the students you're thanking your
parents too for backing you in doing this. If this is -- this
is a really good thing, a start of a life- life-long
learning, this is not the end, this is a good start and you'll
keep doing this. They want to have the best for you possible y
that you can have in your life. They're in back of you,
behind you, pushing for you, praying for you, they're just --
I just -- they want it good for you. They're there.
You're taking a good step and it is one that will help them and
one that will honor them and one that they're proud of that
you're doing as well. Thanks. you. Just I hope you have a
fantastic life with a lot of different options laid out in
front of you. I look forward to seeing a lot of great
accomplishments. Thank you very much.

Interesting about the drumline, we come from different
backgrounds, in high school I was in vocal music, I expect
them to add vocal music behind that drumline at some point. I'll help lead,

there was students playing, they wanted to get together and they
used the buckets from the culinary art program and
transfer parts from the auto technicians, a unique drumline
