How to industry sign banking arizona presentation computer

good morning everyone today he is a longtime favorite presenter and a beauty guru hope I pronounced it correctly his information technology professional as well as the author and freelance journalist Kari has his own business and has been a self-employed technician preparing upgrading and selling computers at Glendale since 1996 quality Wikipedia this is right otherwise about two televisions as on February 20 19 is YouTube channel had more than 270,000 subscribers worldwide with 19 million video views and more than 200 videos featuring detailed diagnostic computer repair and related toys that is fantastic and we have Liberty here in London in addition Carrie also hosts a podcast named tech vents with codes and Mike Smith also fellow IT professional he loves getting questions from the audience so if you personally just one question he would love to answer them and also we can learn from those offices II truly enjoy sharing his unique experience regarding knowledge of computers and electronics in a form of an entertaining way is an immense pleasure to having as I guess today and so let's give him a huge welcome all right let's see if everybody can can hear me and I'm on a stage so I know you could see me if I was down there wouldn't be good how many of you have seen me here before that's good to be home welcome back those of you that are seeing you for the first time my name is Kerry Holtzman and sure all that sounded good there's actually over a thousand videos been busy and I cover on my youtube channel I expose scammers who call you and tell you your computer has a virus or you're owed a refund or from the IRS and I toy with them on the phone to expose the script and to expose their they're confident nature in which they speak to try and convince you when you ask skeptical questions how they just dig in you know they really did whatever question whatever your skepticism is they play it out very convincingly and so I will record those when they call me and the beautiful karma of it is that what they're trying to do is to get money from from people they're calling illegally and by me recording and putting it on YouTube and monetizing the video I'm making money off of them and they're calling me I didn't call them like hey you want to talk to me hold on a minute let me turn the camera microphone going alright I'm ready for you what's going on because I fix computers for a living I deal with ordinary people not computer nerds I don't really like computer nerds if I'm honest computer nerds are the people that push up their glasses and want to correct every little detail favorite favorite words of a computer nerd are well actually to correct you well actually if you know anybody who does that I don't I don't I feel bad for them that's what I do I feel bad for them so I'm trying to not be that guy trying and what I try and do is I try and take common everyday things we're already familiar with and apply them to computers and technologies so that at the very least you can understand the gist of what we're talking about not trying to turn anybody into a tech I just want to empower you to have more control over your computer and not feel intimidated by it I'm concerned that in the computer world we use a lot of technical jargon that is completely unnecessary when we already had English words that would have sufficed without any unnecessary intimidation or confusion for example how many people here make backups see this whole rooms hands should be going up you're getting me angry I interviewed a guy who does data recovery and his business is booming I said if everybody made backup she wouldn't have a job he goes yeah no excuse me I gotta get back to work I got a lot of computers me backup is just a fancy word for copy why couldn't we have just said is that important yeah did you make a copy of it that would be easier right it's the same word and we do this throughout the computer industry and I'm not sure about the psychology involved other than people wanting to feel superior so let's just make up some words and unfortunately it has this effect of being seemingly intimidating to people just starting out and let's face it most people who own computers are not nerds or just ordinary everyday people they just want the damn thing to work right so what I like to do when I'm on stage here is rather than come up here with some predefined thing I want to tell you about look if you're not interested I'm wasting my time I'm wasting your time so what I like to do is take questions that are on your mind if you're brave enough to ask and do my best to provide answers now the goal here is not to stump me because that's a very easy goal hmm but if you have a genuine question I will do my best to provide an answer we can show some links and I'm gonna kick things off but at any time if you have a question you raise your hand and we'll address it and the more you participate in this I think the more you'll get from it so those of you who do interact I think will enjoy this will get more from this than those of you who are just spectators so bear that in mind as well I was told today I was told before I got here that there was some concern about Facebook and privacy are you guys concerned about that okay privacy online is non-existent this whole idea that you can all maintain any level of privacy in my opinion as a technician is is an illusion well there are settings that you can turn off within Facebook and I'll show you here as well as on Google I think you'll be shocked at the amount of information they have on you once you figure out where that is and how to turn it off or to look at it but the truth is if you have a smartphone it knows where you are it knows the websites you visit it knows the people you call the people that have contact lists if you step outside there's cameras no matter where you go that are monitoring you if you are on Facebook if you're just connected to your internet service provider they're monitoring where you go now to be honest and this is going to sound a bit harsh but nobody cares about you I mean as far as data collection they're just companies with software that runs and it looks at patterns and looks at ways that they can utilize that data to put advertising on your they think would be of interest to you but Kerry went to Levis dot-com three times this month let's put a coupon up there for Levi's they think they're being helpful they don't know who I am if I have a number of family members all using the same computer they don't know that they just know that this particular cookie has been utilized over and over at a specific website numerous times and there's a big misunderstanding of what a cookie is so let's talk about that for a minute a cookie is not a piece of software it's not something that's taking up a lot of space on your hard drive when you go to the dry cleaner so you want to use one of my analogies when you go to the dry cleaner and you drop off your clothes and they give you that little ticket that's your cookie when you come back with your ticket or your cookie your token they go oh I know which shirts belong to you I know which do these clothes are yours that's all a cookie is it's just an identifier that sits on your computer that certain websites look for that identifier and if they find it they each have unique identifiers and sometimes they share them so if Levi shares their identifiers with Google who shares their identifiers with YouTube they know that one computer hit those three sites they don't know anything about you other than the general location or the city that you're in they don't know precisely who you are and they don't need to they just know how often you visit certain sites how long you stay there and what your frequency is with regards to purchasing how long you're there before you make a purchase this is all this is about this isn't about you personally nobody's interested in technically what sites you go they don't care unless they can sell you something now if you commit a crime of course the police will look at that information to help them build a case against you but for the rest of us we have something called security through obscurity which means if you're not a public figure if you're not a celebrity if you're not a politician people don't care right I mean if I say something racist it's not going to be on the news tomorrow that's kind of a good thing right especially the sensitivity of the times we're living in right now but somebody who is in the public eye clearly is going to be under a bigger magnifying glass and for them privacy can be very important now that being said we can limit some of the data collection right some of it is within our control if you know how to get to it so one of the first things I want to talk about is Google how many people here use Google everybody stop it so Google's tracking everything you do search is free when a product is free the product is you most of the time there are some open-source projects that are honestly open and free but anybody here using avast antivirus or AVG free okay you guys know up in the news about that they were collecting all the data of all the users that were using their free antivirus and they had a subsidiary company called jumpshot that was then selling that data for millions of dollars to companies like Microsoft and Google and then it got exposed and then they said okay the solution to this is we'll just put up a little pop-up that says would you like to opt-out you're automatically opted in the data collection and if you just click ok you just agreed to it like a lot of people don't read it they just want that little window to go away to get back to doing whatever you were doing and then this article got exposed showing these contracts between jumpshot and companies like Google and Microsoft and it publicly shamed them and then the CEO said we're gonna officially shut down jumpshot so when they were offered the opportunity to make it right their solution was to have an opt-out but then when they were ashamed then they're like oh we'll do the right thing now that you've caught us but they've lost trust I mean they're it's one thing when Google's collecting the it's one thing when Gmail is collecting data but when your security software is collecting data that's the antithesis of why you've got it right that's the complete opposite reason of what it's what you put it on your computer for so I want to strongly advise you to be very cautious of free products free games online anything that's free they're monitoring what you're doing and that may not be a bad thing they may actually show you things you're interested in and save you some money or maybe bleed you to a website to some product you never knew existed that you're interested in when it works it can be useful but we are so bombarded by advertisements whether it's radio commercials television commercials billboards we tend to just tune all that out now we've sort of become so accustomed to being constantly bombarded with advertising that on the internet it as you're anybody's who's experienced pop-ups can tell you they're getting more and more aggressive to get your attention and the reason I say stop using Google is there's a better option than Google it's better option out there if we go to Google let's just go to Google right now I'll give you an example well you can all follow along with this at home when you get home right up on the top corner there's these three dots you can see them on the screen now if I go to those three dots and then go to settings right here is privacy and security actually I think that's for the browser I think that's for Google yeah that's from my browser where is it I might have to sign in first yeah I think I have to sign in and you click on your little account picture and go to settings and then within those settings there are options that will show you all the websites you visited or searches you've done for the entire history that you've ever used Google and there's an option to clear all that out and I'll see if I can pull up a website that can demonstrate that for you if you want a good search search engine that isn't recording what you're doing or at least that's what they tell us it's called DuckDuckGo so like duck-duck-goose and DuckDuckGo kind of a silly name you can just go to duck comm it's shortcut for that will pull up very good search results without any of the advertisements I'm not even sure how they make any money which is a bit of a concern and you can make it your default search so that you don't have to go there every time you can go into your browser whether it's Chrome or Internet explorer edge Firefox and you can set duck duck go to be your default search engine and I'll give you an example if we want to do a search on Google privacy settings and the very first link that comes up is how to change privacy settings though that's a download we don't want that data privacy controls explained at Google Safety Center you see this information is out there Google does provide the instructions on how to do it you just have to find them they don't exactly shove that in your face like the advertising and this site will walk you through steps you can take both on us should be on a smartphone as well as on a computer Windows or Mac and the settings that you can follow depending on what level some of this stuff is helpful for example you might need help but you don't know where you are if you've got one of these you can literally type in where am i and it will give you the specific address to where you are now if you're one of those privacy people that said I don't want it to know where I am you could end up shooting yourself in the foot when you need help and it can't because you turned it off it's like somebody who puts bars on their windows to keep a burglar for coming in but then their house catches fire and they can't get out question yes so I'll just repeat what you said surgery buddy can hear it every once in a while and you get a pop-up that says hide your searches they're trying to sell you something you can do all this on your own these companies that want to charge you are taking advantage of laziness because you can easily Google that question how do I take control of my privacy on Facebook or Google or Gmail or whatever it is and like I said there's still a certain amount that you're agreeing to in exchange for that free service but you can't limit what's collected and you have a right to see what's being collected but I think you'll be shocked at how much I first time I thought I went yeah so what who cares when they went oh I guess I care now I care this isn't like browser history in your computer this is on Google's computer this is on Facebook's computer and in the other concern about that is if somebody hacks you or somebody guesses your username and password and then they look through your history that they might be able to use that against you but again mostly a concern for celebrities public figures not so much for regular folks like us but possible and nothing drives me crazy er than people who don't take their passwords security seriously recently on the news there was a news article and then look the news likes to keep us scared that's how they make money and they say ring doorbells hacked you guys know the ring doorbell from Amazon and well they weren't hacked the ring doorbells were not hacked let me clear on that that was a headline intended to make you go oh it better click on that and it worked what happened was a number of websites were hacked and the databases of all the users were exposed including login names and passwords now if you're one of those people that uses the same password everywhere you go and so your Amazon ring doorbell use the same password you used at one of these compromised websites that's all these guys did they just typed in your name and your password that was from a security breach from another website knowing that people aren't good at remembering their passwords and then they were able to log in and see the cameras there's a video up of a guy saying hello is anybody home he's talking through there's a microphone and speaker on the ring doorbell and the guy had cameras are numerous ca eras the guy's like who's talking to me and he goes I'm a hacker I'm a friendly hacker I'm not here to hurt you I saw some shadows and I know it's late at night I'm sorry to bother you but I want you to know that people can hack into your cameras and the guys like this is freaking me out and he goes look I'm sorry I don't mean to alarm you I just I'm a good guy I'm telling you bad guys if you don't change your password I'm just telling you you should change your password because people like me can get in I'm just wanting to let you know because I feel obligated to do that him doing that is illegal by the way it's not allowed to do that but he's thinking he's being a good hacker by letting the homeowner know your informations been compromised and you could be monitored and not watched and not realize you're being watched by others it's really disturbing to me when people don't take their passwords security seriously and then they want to cry that they're a victim any time you're using anything financial or important you want a unique password so if you're visiting a website form where they're talking about Ford Mustangs that's fine you want to use the same pastor who cares what's the worst they're gonna do if they break in there but the problem is we get ourselves set up with so many accounts we find it difficult to maintain what our password lists are and for that I recommend a password management program now I personally use a program called Robo forum which I can bring right up here and remind me to get back to the whole privacy thing but I kind of got off on a tangent now there's a number of other products besides RoboForm ones called LastPass and other ones called dashlane keepass is another one I like RoboForm it's easy for me I like easy I'm a simple guy it's like 20 bucks a year and all I have to do is remember my login for RoboForm that's the only login name and password I have to remember now if I don't set a good secure password at RoboForm if my password is one two three four five then it'd be easy to login as me on RoboForm and have all my logins and passwords to every site my bank my credit cards every day so you've got to take your main RoboForm password very very seriously and that means at least 12 characters long and here's the thing about passwords you know the guy the guy who decided who was tasked with making the rules what makes a good password he had nothing to go by he had no precedent so he made it up well you want a mixture of upper and lowercase characters and a special symbol where'd you get that from the media asked since I made it up and they said is that secure he said no I mean it was back then when they asked me but today it's not secure so what's a good way to come up with a password a couple of things RoboForm has a password generator you tell RoboForm I want a password it's 12 characters or 20 characters long make it random make it upper and lowercase there are some numbers and RoboForm will generate it and then you can copy and paste it and RoboForm will remember it for that website so if I want to log into ebay I just go to RoboForm and click on ebay it takes me to the eBay website puts in my name puts in my password it logs me in but some people say look I don't want to pay for this thing I'll what's a good way to make a password come up with a phrase and remember that phrase I have a customer who made his phrase his dog my dog Duke oh one and he capitalizes the D in Duke and that's a nice long password it's super easy to remember he's got numbers in there and the more characters it is the more secure it is and running words together is just as hard to crack is running gibberish together but words are a lot easier for us to remember so if you can put together a little sentence of something that's meaningful to you and you could say use that at the RoboForm main password then that RoboForm generate all these other nonsense passwords because I visit over a hundred websites which I didn't realize until I looked at propo form and how many sites have got saved there's no way I'm gonna have a piece of paper and I'm writing and scratching out and some people say you should change your password every three months I don't think that's necessary I think in my opinion if you have a good strong secure password leave it alone but you can do everything right and I want to emphasize this because this applies not only for passwords online but for your credit card you can take all the right steps in securing your credit card and have the credit card company be breached and all your informations out like Equifax got hacked you didn't do anything wrong yet most of us in this room had all of our private information social security numbers all that was exposed because Equifax dropped the ball and none of us asked to be an Equifax s database and none of us can be removed from it so what choice do you have well like car insurance you can't control whether the other guy has car insurance right so you just look out for yourself and everything else is out of your control and we accept that that's kind of the state of internet security right now if we look at the number of breaches that have occurred its Home Depot it's Lowe's it's Wendy's it's t.j.maxx the list goes on and on and on there's a funny meme online for us IT guys and it says these this is a picture of companies before a data breach and they're just real stingy with their money we don't have any money spend on security it's not in the budget then after the security of each breach and all of the bad publicity it's take the money here how much do you take it off take it take it take it fix it but once the cats out of the bag look at Yahoo every single Yahoo account was hacked nobody got out of it why do people still use Yahoo how do you trust Yahoo anymore once a vast and AVG were shown to expose and sell their customers data without being full disclosure that that was what they were doing how do you read or entrust it's very difficult and furthermore we should be skeptical when a company like DuckDuckGo says we don't collect your data well we're gonna take their word for it I guess until it's proven otherwise but what proof do we have so on Facebook let's see if I can go to Facebook there is a couple of ways that you can control what people see about you I don't have my account everything is always gonna be found universally what we're talking about Google or Facebook under your account settings that's usually found in the upper right corner and we're not seeing it because I'm not logged in and I don't want to log in because they know it's it's my account right but you would go to that little picture of you that you've set up on Facebook in the top right corner and you'll see a button that says settings and you'll click on settings it's not a button but it's a it's an option in a list and then under that will be privacy and security settings and it lets you control who can post on your page what people can see about you if if you want people to be able to see your phone number or only you want people that you've connected with this here phone number or nobody ever could see these are the kind of options that are available to you but they're not set that way by default you have to go in and change them like everything is open or at least it was by default and they're sort of counting on people's laziness to not bother changing it so if we find another way to do this we'll go back to DuckDuckGo and I'll type in Facebook privacy settings and I want you to always remember to use your search whether it's Google or DuckDuckGo use your search to answer these questions you don't have to go I wonder how you do that I'll wait for Carrie to show up so they can explain it you don't have to wait for me you don't have to wait for an expert anymore if you search the question and look at the source of the information if it's coming from a reputable source like a news organization you're familiar with like this site I'm not familiar with this site but it it looks good to me there's a privacy check up you can run on Facebook they explain to you where that is and how to how to run it and it'll evaluate your security and you can see this goes on for quite a while there's a lot of different security settings what they do and it's a lot for me to cover while I'm up here other than to just kind of lead you to the process and then you can follow that through and it's something you should only have to do one time for each account so if you want when you log into Google once you set those settings with regards to your privacy they'll stay that way when you log into Facebook once you set your privacy setting this lists a but for each site you'll have to do that same for Twitter I see a lot of people also using their internet service providers email like I'll get emails from people at Cox net I'm advising people don't use your internet service providers email and the reason I advise it is when you leave or get a different Internet service provider you lose that email address for it's just gone so if you get a free email address like Gmail or hotmail or I'll even say Yahoo even though I have trouble trusting them again you can keep that email address for life regardless of who your internet service provider is and a lot of people don't worry about this until it and then they'll go you know Kerry talked about that about a year ago I know what he means now because I didn't think I had any plans to change my internet service provider and now I do and now I'm gonna lose my email and I gotta let everybody know and then if I forget somebody and they try and email me I'll never know because that email is gonna be turned off so by going with one of the free services not only will you have an email address for life but no matter where you go in the world you can log in to gmail.com using somebody else's computer as long as you remember your login name and password and have access to your email anywhere in the world on any device connected to the Internet at any time which may or may not be true with your ISP some do that the Senate dome but again there is a price for free there's no support there's no guarantees but if you've ever called your ISP for support you might find out it's not what it's cracked up to be does anybody have any question yes I'm so you're coming so he's saying sometimes his computer says do you want us to generate your password I've never seen that I'm sorry oh yes yes so your browser may ask do you want us to remember your password that's very insecure like I could log into your computer right now and pull that entire list of safe passwords up very easily so it's convenient but look the easier you make it for you to get in the easier you make it for other people to get in as you as the best way I can explain it when I'm trying to think of a an analogy here some people I have a friend who's got door locks on the front door of their house but they can just hold their phone and push a button and it unlocks the door not a fan of this and I'm not a fan of it for a couple of reasons one what are you doing the batteries died I don't have to change batteries of my doorknob never happened don't want to start now - what if somebody is able to pick up the transmission that their cell phone is sending to the lock and cloning or replicate it then they can get in their house thieves are lazy if I have a highly desirable car and I've rolled up the windows and locked the doors and you park next to me on a piece of junk with the windows down and the keys in the ignition which one do you think the thief is going to take that's how thieves work that's why they're thieves so sometimes all these things that we're doing they're just deterrents right they're not guarantees you're not gonna be a victim they're just making yourself less likely to be a victim and if you tell your browser to save your password and you get a virus or malware it could theoretically grab that data and transmit it and now the thieves edit and you would never even know what happened well it's not Google that's saving your password it's your browser so if it's Google Chrome if it's the Chrome browser you would regardless of what the browser is you would go to settings and there'll be a checkbox to reset the browser or the internet explorer edge Firefox there's a button to clear the passwords out and reset which is what you would do if you were going to give the computer away or sell it right because you wouldn't want those people to have that information see the beauty of RoboForm is you have to have my login and password so if I sell you my computer and I forget yet you still see RoboForm and it's gonna ask you for a password you will be unable to provide so I'm still okay because RoboForm won't release any of my stored passwords until I tell it the master password first and then I won't have to do it again for 10 or 15 minutes and then it resets and they have to put it in again something like that and all these products work the same by the way LastPass it's kind of a Ford versus Chevy you know so just like your browser Firefox vs. chrome vs. edge they're they're all vehicles they all do the same job some people have preferences for numerous reasons over why they use one or the other but they universally have a settings option it's always found in the upper right corner and then within that you'll see typically under privacy there'll be an option to reset the browser which will clear out everything yes yeah so that's called two-factor authentication and that means if somebody were to get your name and password like if you tried to sign in as me on Facebook it'll say please enter the six digit code from your phone so I better hope I'm signed in on my phone or I'm screwed and then I bring up my phone I go to Facebook I go to settings I go to code generator it puts up a code it's good for like three minutes I enter that code and it says do you want us to remember this computer or are you in like is this a public computer so that when you close the browser will forget it so the person can't come in behind you and continue where you left off you have that option and then when you say remember this computer it'll leave a cookie that's how that's done and it'll remember you not everybody offers two-factor authentication but it's extraordinarily important because it's first of all it's a pain in the butt I'll tell you right now if I want to sign into my PayPal account I really don't want to because I got to put in my name I got to put in my password which RoboForm will do for me but RoboForm doesn't so quick it says are you a robot click here and I gotta I need to get a t-shirt not a robot and then it says we're gonna send a text to this phone number ending in this these last four digits are you okay with that I go yes now my phone buzzes and I click the thing and then I got to unlock my phone with my thumb then I see the code and then I entered the code and then I'm in paid off but I have to because I'm on YouTube by people attacking me constantly I'm a public figure not a big one but enough of one that it can attract some of the wrong attention from lawless individuals who want to say oh this guy thinks he knows so much teach him a lesson I get a lot of that so for me to factor authentication is absolutely critical yes [Music] [Music] so 5g is just the next generation of cellular data transmission you'll probably remember 3G there's still a lot of free I don't really remember a one or a two G but there's certainly a 3G and a 4G which I still have trouble finding places that have 4G and now the next one is 5g but it's not rolled out yet it's in some places but it's very minimal they don't probably be a couple of years before it's ubiquitous it's not gonna collect any more data than any other network the fact that if you have a thermostat connected to the network at all if you have an Alexa or an echo that data is out you're voluntarily putting it out there so how it's being transmitted whether it's 3G 4G 5g Wi-Fi is irrelevant in my opinion the fact that you have it suggests to me you're not worried about stuff like that this is referred to as the Internet of Things or IOT and those are the refrigerators and the washing machines that connect to you Wi-Fi your nest thermostats now I I think I can speak to a like-minded crowd when I go was it ever really hard to turn our thermostats up and down but we like how did we ever live without a Wi-Fi connected thermostat like this is not a huge lifesaver for me and yet the risk it brings with it like I already talked about the ring doorbells and people using the same password just lets people in then you've got security exploits and updates or the Wi-Fi goes down not what do you do well I got to do this thing by hand have you ever tried to adjust a nest thermostat by hand it is not intuitive it's not an up and a down button like a normal everyday thermostat and good luck to you if you set a schedule that you want to turn off I'm gonna turn my heat up before I go to bed then I go to bed and wake up at two o'clock in the morning because the heat went off because it was on the schedule you ever tried to remove anything off a schedule manually on a nest thermostat I used to get up and just slide the button to on and go back to bed or Auto it wasn't hard I don't like technology for the sake of technology I don't need a refrigerator connected to the Internet I don't need that well it can tell you when you're out of things it cannot tell you when you're out of eggs it cannot it doesn't have eyeballs it will you tell it on the screen remember to get eggs well you could do that on your phone you can get a pad of paper in a pen and write shopping list eggs how did we do that before so when it comes to stuff like 5g it's mostly in reference to cellular phones and data transmission it's the ability that we can transmit more data faster everybody's in a hurry everything everybody wants everything yesterday and we want to be able to get a signal no matter where we are Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos they're launching hundreds of satellites to try and enable Internet access to everybody around the world apparently nobody told them the world is two-thirds water but they're covering the globe regardless I guess if you find yourself on a sailing ship in the middle of the Atlantic you can have 5 g if Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos have anything to say about it and hey a glove competition for Cox cable right I mean bring it on these things for a long time I came here and I showed off a flip phone people were shocked these are your computer guy you got a flip phone I go yeah I use it to make and receive phone calls what a shock and everybody would talk to me like they worked for Verizon you don't have a smartphone what's in it for you why do you care how do you live without a smartphone well what do you do with your smartphone like tell me what you do with it that I can well I can check the times the movies start what's the last time I want to do that I mean really what else do you do it I can watch movies I got a 65 inch TV at home you think I want to watch movies on this are you crazy but I'm the old guy who doesn't get it so I say look guys here's the truth I know if I get one of these I'm gonna be addicted to it I'm never gonna lift my head away from it so I don't want it I'll sit at my computer when I want to be online and then when I walk away from the computer that's my organic time right that's my non digital time if I have this with me I'm like a drug addict hold on I gotta do them but then you realize how much these things do you don't need a digital camera anymore he'll remember film cameras yet have two different kinds right one for movies and one for standards still pictures GPS don't need that anymore connecting the GPS to the computer to download your map updates that they want to charge you for every six months don't have do that anymore anybody else tell me what else this replaces this replaces a lot of stuff anybody what else does this replace flashlight it's a flat absolutely as a flashlight yeah as three members for you that was kind of my joke they're like you use a flip phone you mean you use your own brain to think geez what an idiot calculator anybody think what else this replaces calendar I'll tell you what what cracks me up about this and it's kind of a lead-in to a joke which is nobody ever says it replaces a telephone like nobody ever says oh you know you can make and receive phone calls with it they like name everything you can do with that and you know if you try telling kids and today that they won't believe you I can do this what's that yeah remember when we bought those big encyclopedia Britannica's and you around the yearly subscription did you get a new one and they were like three thousand dollars and the information in them was questionable and since a lot of it would not be politically correct today yeah I mean it just replaces so much I'm like well just the GPS function there's a program called ways waz e that you can put on your phone and it'll tell you the speed limit of where you're at it'll tell you if there's objects in the road that have been reported ahead if there's a police officer spotted somewhere or a car on the shoulder to help keep you aware of what's going on in your surroundings and I think it's beautiful and it's free and it does a really good job most of the time but you're still gonna have to use your eyes and look out the windshield okay other questions yes up front so that's the question right like if I put all my eggs in one basket what happens when someone takes the basket well the eggs are scrambled okay all the data is encrypted so if you have a good secure password let me just quickly give you an idea of what encryption is there's a movie about it called code talkers right you know what code talkers were see the Germans they were listening in on our military well we couldn't stop the Germans from listening in but what we could do is get some Navajo speaking American Indians that the Germans couldn't under so they could hear it but they couldn't make heads or tails of what was being said that is encryption so they could get your data and the way they decrypt the data is by knowing your password and if your password is one two three four five by the way I'm gonna get fired up about this do you know what the most common this the internet is not new we all know better by now I got on the internet back in 1993 for the very first time it's a funny story I was working at Intel one of my co-workers one of those guys that pushes their glasses and says well actually comes up to me he goes Kerry you got to see this check this out this is the coolest thing and he pulls up the web browser and there wasn't a whole lot to do on the internet specifically with a web browser because there was no World Wide Web it was kind of this mosaic browser was a whole new idea everything before that was all text you typed and text came back that's what the internet used to be so he pulls up the nasa weather satellite now I'm in Chandler Arizona working at Intel and my friend is very very excited you've got to see this so I'm like what is it what is he goes look I'm logged into the NASA weather satellite and it says there's clear skies on 105 degrees outside I said Steve there's a window right there what's the point of this so I've always been very practically practical minded person right and if you look at the state of passwords today most common passwords 20:19 does anybody want to take a guess at what the most common passwords used are in rat talk in 1993 in 2019 here's the list somebody said they wanted their password to be incorrect so that if they entered it wrong you would say your password is incorrect think about that one but yogin z qw e RT y that's just running your fingers across the top row of the keyboard from the left side towards the middle one two three four five six one two they're revising seven if you see your password on here first thing you need to do when you get back to your home is changing one one one one one is not secure so if somebody were to guess one one one one one then they would unencrypted your RoboForm file but if your password is a like a long phrase my dog do go one they're highly unlikely to ever guess that and a brute-force attack is when they just do every letter one at a time a a you know ABCDE and then they'll go a a a b a c a d and then ago a a be a AC and the computer just automates that till it tries every possible combination and mathematically it becomes more complex with each letter you add so you know you don't have to have a nonsensical password it just has to be a long password and it needs to be a combination of words not just one word that's another really bad thing and it shouldn't be something obvious like your birthday or something that somebody could look up publicly about you online the city you live in things that are publicly available online could be used to answer your security questions now in 2018 it really wasn't much different sunshine is not a good password yes so are you paying for a low farm okay so Robo I can't tell you because I need to know a lot more information but RoboForm part of what you're paying for is support and they want you to be able to use their product and whatever you're experiencing they should be familiar with there's probably a setting somewhere and it's probably related to your security software for your computer so like do you knows like McAfee or Norton or MC soft is a good is highly recommend that program do you know if you have the antivirus version or if you have the PC security version see the reason I ask is antivirus all it does is protect you from malicious software the PC security has like firewalls and all this other stuff but MC soft is a big company and Robo forms a big company they know of each other and they should play well together but my guess is it's MC soft that's probably blocking it but I would reach out to RoboForm whether you call them or email them or again we can go to Google or we can go to DuckDuckGo and we can type in whatever the word for word with the error messages that you see type it in exactly word for word with the word RoboForm and then see what websites come up but please don't use search to find a support phone number please don't do that like oh I need to call Dell I need to look up Dell support number most of those numbers are fake so if you're gonna Google a phone number to make sure you've got the right phone number Google the phone number you're about to call if that phone number shows up to be support for a number of different companies it's fake so I did a video where I called the guy that claim to be candy crush support which it wasn't and he said hello technical support and I go yes this Dell support he goes yeah and I go I'm sorry I didn't mean to call oh I know what I said I said I'm sorry which support is this because I knew that the phone number was used to represent Gmail and Google and Symantec and Norton I mean when you google the phone number the truth so as soon as the answer I go I'm sorry what support is this he says what support were you calling see that's your first clue and I said well I was calling down he goes well this is Del I went no no I mean HP he goes yeah yeah I know this what can I do really like they're very convincing and they're there to get your credit card information if anybody tells you you have to buy a gift card we don't have to have this talk do we otherwise I'm going to need you to go get me a gift card correct RoboForm will say would you like us to save your password for you instead of your browser and your browser has an option it says don't ask me again and I highly suggest you use it I realize it's convenient but that convenience also makes it convenient for people to steal so as a double-edged sword on that and and I'm not making any money from RoboForm I'm not here to push their product I use it myself LastPass is an equivalent competitor just like Ford is to Chevy I'm a Ford guy I'm a RoboForm guy there's also a few others smaller players that I haven't mentioned and that's probably not fair because they may be good alternates as well that might be priced a bit more competitively because they're the underdog but RoboForm is also proven itself I've had it more than 10 years and I've never had a data breach or anything like that ever occur but I also take my passwords am i under scoring that enough very seriously don't use password don't use something simple yes face identification is primarily used on cell phones and there's a bit of concerns because this technology much like 5g there's a lot of talk about it but the implementation of it still has a lot of evolving to do they can often be fooled a lot of people they're concerned about the privacy with their rights when it comes to involved being involved with the police you see if you have a code you have to enter you can say I have a right to remain silent I'm not giving you my coat and you're fully covered under the law but if you have a fingerprint or a face ID they can just grab your hand or put your phone at your face and unlock it whether you like it or not there's nothing you can do about it they have every legal right to do that so you made it more convenient for you but you also made it more convenient on the other hand if you're under that scrutiny by the police maybe you should have your phone looked at I don't know right I don't want to be that guy but as Americans we're supposed to have a certain rank to privacy but when we ourselves will take our own privacy like I'll give you an example I'm in the store the other day and this person is trying to pay for their goods and the credit card is not going through and they're like we'll hold on let me call my credit card company there's a line of people there Walmart she goes yeah I'm trying to make a purchase you want my credit card number it's 4:08 one I said it's 4:08 what can you hear me 4:08 like they're broadcasting it to all of Walmart not thinking look at where you are so sometimes we're not thinking and we inadvertently provide everybody on campus with our information even though ordinarily we have good long secure passwords we follow all the rules were very cautious with our credit card but then we do something like that yes okay yeah so you're asking about the little portable credit card readers that some merchants use look if you ever go to like farmer's markets oftentimes people have something it was a company called Foursquare I guess they're still around it's a little white square thing you can plug into your phone and you can swipe there it's fully secure okay now there's a lot of ways people can get your credit card whether the merchants themselves is dishonest or they didn't have good security or the company that they're using doesn't have good security or the credit card company or the bank doesn't have good security it may not have been anything that you did but this is why you should use your credit card versus your debit card look as far as I'm concerned you can take all the money you want from the bank's take it but when it comes out of my checking account we're gonna have a problem so when I'm making purchases from merchants like I'm good with Amazon I know they're not gonna do anything but when I'm making purchases online I prefer to use a credit card or to use my debit as a credit card because there's usually no difference in what I have to pay it's on now the difference is what they pay for the transaction so I don't think there's anything I used I go to events all the time where they have those little portable readers I've used one myself in fact there was a time when I wish I had one when I was selling I was here selling my books and I was cash only because I had no way to take credit cards so no I wouldn't say just because somebody's got a portable card reader that there's anything wrong with that and it may or may not have been related to something that you experienced but that's not normal in the back we have a question recently I saw something online that talked about going to an ATM machine before you put your card in your credit card in you are dead mark you can hit the cancel twice and if there's anything put on the machine no I so I I'm a very technical logical mr. Spock kind of guy and nothing bothers me more than the ritualization of behaviors which is practically superstitious I think it's bad luck to be superstitious let me just asn't that funny okay let's stick to my day job I run into that all the time because anybody can say they're a computer technician and some computer tech will say you got to do this and do that and do this and it fixes that problem and I go well why does it fix that problem I don't know I'm just telling you and if you do this it is so so if I if I wave some chicken bones over my head and circle three times and then I type this command and the computer works so I'm gonna do that every single time and I want to tell other people to do it because it worked well did it occur to you that it was just the command at the end that you typed that was the thing that fixed the problem and the chicken bones on the toiling were completely unnecessary now that's an exaggerated example but this idea that you're gonna bypass security by hitting cancel two time no no they often put skimmers on gas pumps and sometimes ATM machines and what a skimmer is it's a little piece that fits over the card reader that looks like the card reader and it often just covers it if you grab it and pull on it it'll come right off and this happens mostly in gas pumps they're finding them all around the valley now the way that I'm able to circumvent any issue in the gas pumps as I have a gas station credit card so I go to qt no thieves want a cutey gas station credit card they want your visa or your MasterCard or your discovered they don't want a gas station credit card it's not useful to them they can't go to Target they can't go buy shoes so and I get five cents off a gallon when I buy at qt so it's great buying the gas anyway why not get a little discount and I think it's better for my car to just stick with one brand although that might be an old-school thought but back in the day qualities of gas varied and you could get more a cleaner gasoline from one place than another so I use the same gas anyway that's one way to avoid it the other ways you can grab that thing and pull on see if it comes off just make it a habit to grab it and pull on it it comes off you go in the store let the clerk know and then you might want to get the heck out of there in case somebody's watching you and wants to come after you because you just stole their a little piece of technology but the other thing they're doing now is they're opening up the gas pumps and putting a little Bluetooth sending unit inside and if that's the case you can turn your Bluetooth on and there's an app you can download to locate is anybody really going to go through all this trouble so don't use your don't use your debit card at the gas pumps use a credit card or pay cash when it comes to an ATM if you're sticking with your own bank's ATM you probably be okay but when you're traveling and you're in a at an area you're not familiar with or you're in a bad part of town you might want to have those precautions though it can happen anywhere it's more likely to happen sort of on the outskirts like on a road trip and you're driving through some little town it can happen in places like that or you're in an unfamiliar place we are not aware of the type of crime that occurs in that area and they might be everywhere but by using the credit card you are going to be protected under fraudulent charges you'll have to you know let them know and sign some paperwork that you would sign an affidavit that it's not you and it'll come off so at least it's not coming out of your checking account right so when you're buying the gas in an askew credit or debit always pick credit or pay cash and I realize some gas stations charge a little bit more for credit but is it worth paying that a little bit more or is it risk and you get that peace of mind or is it worth saving the four cents a gallon and then wondering am I gonna be suffering a data breach am I going to show unnecessary charges or of unauthorized charges on my card like I have a PayPal credit card and what I love most about it is any time I use it I instantly get an email from PayPal oh I see you just spent $24 at Grimaldi's pizzeria yes I did it's instant so the minute a charge goes through that isn't mine my phone vibrates I'm like what's this oh I didn't do that and I know immediately I don't have to wait 30 days to my statement arrives in the mail I know immediately I did not make that charge and I can put a stop to it before it gets any worse [Music] I'm not a Mac person so I'm far from an expert on Mac Mac's aren't the biggest target because there's fewer of them so the number of so the virus Raiders you know percentage-wise if the virus can affect 10 million people versus a million people you're gonna go after 10 million for the same amount of effort there are viruses that exist and you should have antivirus but what's best for the Mac I honestly don't know the answer to that but an Avast may not be bad see they've been called out and shamed and they're probably doing everything right now but will they go back to their own ways that's a decision you'll have to make it doesn't make the product bad it was a little deceitful that they were collecting data and they weren't being fully transparent about that [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so one of the things scammers one of the tactics they use is to provide you with false information it may be that your phone telling you that the phone call was answered by another device was was done by that hacker or the hacker knew that that's what the phone message would be if they performed a certain technique so that you would explore it you know curiosity killed the cat your best solution is to dismiss stuff like that there are emails that have been going around where websites have been hacked where they've gotten your username and password and then said I know your username and password and here it is and if you don't pay me X amount of Bitcoin I had your web camera on and I watched everything you do and I'm gonna send that to all your contacts and embarrass you unless you send me some Bitcoin and that you can't reply to the email sometimes it appears to come from your own email address which is not clever I can write a letter put your address on it and then also put your address on the return address like that's not really technical we can all change the return address real easy well when you get an email that claims to come from yourself these are Bluffs they're always a bluff and they're hoping you take the bluff sometimes you'll get error messages on your computer that are not real they're advertisements they look exactly like error messages and they'll say your computer has a problem call this number don't ever call that number if you're not sure what to do turn the computer off and then turn it back on again that's literally most of the time all you have to do if it gets locked in a loop where that no matter what you do it keeps coming back call me and I got cards here I can help you I can save you a lot of money and you know that in unlike some stranger that may be coming over to fix your computer I've been coming here for 15 years so it's in my best interest to make sure you're happy but I am it's very difficult to tell the bad guys from the good guys anymore it's hard to tell what's an advertisement from what's an actual error message and in your curiosity in exploring it is what will get you into trouble a lot of times oh here's an email list click here to unsubscribe I never subscribe to this and when you hit unsubscribe it could inject now we're on your machine or at the very least we'll let them know they've got an active email address that somebody's looking at it's not a dead box it's not a dead letter box so just responding to it now unless it's a big name company like if it's Google or Gmail or Sears Sears even around you know what I'm saying if it's Amazon they will abide by unsubscribed requests but if it's a company you never heard of before just delete it and if you ignore them long enough they will go away but it they can be pretty persistent if you try and rosetta extract revenge on them well now they got a live one on the line and now you'll be sold to a lot of other skin and it just gets worse like when a scammer calls me I don't say take me off your list I don't hang up on them because they won't take me off their list they'll do just the opposite and if I hang up on them they're just gonna call back so I try and keep them on the phone for as long as possible and waste as much of their time so they're so pissed off at me they never want to call me again and I know the longer I keep them on the phone they're not making any money or ripping off anybody else so that's what I do and if you've got the time to do it it's a lot of fun I just play like the dumbest guy the windows there's the oh yeah I have windows they closed them in the winter time well at the same time so follow the south and prices as well that couldn't happen but then they say you have to lock your number with your phone with rising or else another cop if you tell them you're like some they do some other somebody else with your back your number very nice what we talking about this yeah how that worked out was it mine somebody to take my number yeah yeah I forgot my password to my email okay I'll email it to you because I want to make sure right well it's an interesting term lock it in I think what they're saying is you can activate a feature where you have to be like a second factor authentication where there's a secondary verification before the number can be transferred I think that's what they mean in general if you receive a phone number and I'm sure you've heard this before if you see a phone number coming in from your phone that is a number that's not recognized like if they're in your contacts list their name shows up if a number shows up don't answer it let it go to voicemail I promise you if somebody wants to talk to you they'll leave you a voicemail if they don't leave you a voicemail thank goodness you didn't answer it and blocking the numbers often doesn't do anything it just they keep changing the numbers they rarely call from the same number twice I mean go ahead and block it but it's probably not gonna be effective and furthermore you may not realize this but it doesn't actually block them what it does is it just prevents your phone from ringing and sends them immediately to your voicemail so if you're getting somebody harassing you they can just fill your voicemail up over and over it's just that your phone won't disturb you about it that's all blocking does it doesn't actually say we're not taking phone calls from you at least that's how it works on my phone which is very disappointing that's very unusual yeah and they're probably nothing you did there's probably nothing that you did that made you susceptible to that it may not have been a fault of your own or you know a weak password some of these things Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey had his Twitter account hacked from him and here's the thing people been complaining about this security loophole in Twitter for years and they said there's nothing we can do about it when it happened to Jack Dorsey it was fixed within three days it's amazing how that works right so calm just one last any one last thing last chance okay thank you so much for joining me today oh hold on real quick [Applause] yeah you should never have to pay those yes it takes time but it shouldn't cost you anything but your time okay guys my name is Keri Hilson please check out my youtube channel you can google Keri Holzman run on YouTube search and thanks you guys for coming to see me today [Applause]
