[Music] the MJ Murdoch trust mission is to nurture and rich the educational cultural social and spiritual life of individuals families and communities and with particular attention to the Pacific Northwest [Music] five states that really form a unique part of the country urban suburban rural and kind of everything in between all of those in a sense provide for an opportunity to fulfill the mission of the trust at serving these various sectors that we also work in arts and culture and Education Health and Human Services in science education and research we're about building bridges about building connections about finding ways where we might work together to build free associations of people who would work together for the common good [Music] what we're really trying to do is to say what is it that would help you better fulfill your mission and more effective and efficient ways we kind of went viral and took off unexpectedly we were scrambling to get things set and organized and we were missing so many opportunities mostly because we just didn't have enough people and we felt like if we could have a fundraising director that we could really maximize people that wanted to help and we just didn't have the capacity to engage with them as an organization we've always measured success at the individual level and we're not going to stop that but what we haven't really been able to do is say what moves a family forward are our services helping our families stay together gain self sufficiency and be successful in the light house and with the food distribution ministry we serve over 14,000 servings a month in a small community what we're seeing with students nowadays that are coming into the university is they really want to help out the planet they want to get involved we see so many of them you know working on their computers and they might be working on their cell phone and they're not able to see how to connect their skills out with the real world so as I look back through the history of Murdock support it's been very impactful I mean the grants they make make a difference and they're usually not the most high-profile grants but grants that go right to the core of how to make this place work sometimes our work is really focused on helping organization as they seek to retool or to renew the organization we are a community hospital we are here to serve the people and that's always been our mission this grant makes as possible that we can provide the funding for the hospital to ensure that the care is going to be here when we need it the Murdock trust has helped us expand into kinder in Bothell now we're serving 800 families a year there and then most recently we were just opening enduring Renton with the Murdock trust support and are well on our way to serving 200 families in that location when I arrived we had no local clean room and no capability for doing the the micro device development that I do and so my students were traveling they were traveling to Stanford University to Cornell University so it really limited the participation by the students we realized that we could support a facility here and should indeed have a local facility to support that that research and educational mission while fundraising for toilets is not as sexy or as exciting as fundraising for a large capital campaign project we know that the children that attend our programs here at the garden all of our guests for our events and the community at large will be very very excited to have some permanent facilities that are installed here on site Murdoch's been pretty instrumental in helping us support the communities over in Idaho try and get a hold of understand and use some of these newly innovative technologies and methods in order to get more things done on the ground and clinics we are huge believers and benefits of camp experience and we would love it if every kid and every adult gets a chance to have regular camp experiences I was pushing my son Bryce in a wheelchair through the gravel and talking to the guest services director and we were just talking business and and I was tilting him back and pushing him and I had to put his anti tippy things up to get him over that gravel and I'm grunting and groaning and she stops music puts her hand on my arm she got tears in her eyes and she said Rachel I am so sorry I did not realize how difficult it was to push a wheelchair through this gravel we are aiming these components specifically to help families who are affected by disability when they communicate we're always hoping that we can help groups at any part along that journey to really take passion into execution to infuse creativity into planning it's when we do that kind of thing that we're fulfilling our mission one of the things I love about Murdock they like to help take good things and help them get to the next level we're thrilled for this funding to make this position possible because this gets us closer to maximizing all the support that we've been receiving we believe that stem are the critical subjects that are going to enable our young people to be lifelong learners as well as prepared to launch in the job market the economy that we have today everything from agriculture to tech and most importantly be prepared for the economies and the challenges that we can't foresee that are coming tomorrow the equipment that Murdock has helped us install here has allowed our workers to remain competitive in this industry and it's allowed us to employ more people with significant disabilities in this area this project would not be doable without outside support without site funding without organizations foundations like the Murdock found to make this financially viable it will help increase property values it will help encourage more businesses to think about moving into this community Murdock Trust has been an incredible partner it has helped us incredibly in terms of acquisition of state-of-the-art instrumentation this opportunity with the cleanroom it really allows us to be at the forefront of the new knowledge I think Murdock sees the breadth of the applications and sees the active use of their tools once they arrive here they see the impact that that this gift will have downstream for the research that's going on and importantly for the education of the students who are getting hands-on exposure to these cutting-edge tools we had no idea when we looked at this property in Soldotna Laska just one building on 10 and a half acres 17 years later now that we would have 27 acres and now we're building our 15th building on campus thanks to the Murdock trust and others [Music] the challenges that we face are significant enough the needs of individuals families and communities are great enough that we need the best that every organization can bring by building bridges between various ideas various cultures various communities and saying not what is it that separates us but how can we work together for the common good we are interacting with other organizations and a much broader picture to how do we move this message in the work forward in an ecosystem you kind of rely on others and you share and your partner and and you depend on on the the strengths of the people around you we can't do this ourselves we we don't run ministries and orphanages and schools around the world we just make a great pair of shoes one lady commented if she had known moving to Stevensville would have been the gift that it was to her son because of the theater she would have moved years and before just as in traditional life each person village has a role they need to carry out in order for that village to be successful same thing happens in the nonprofit community we work for the common good by including everyone Virginia Garcia make sure that no one gets turned away for inability to pay we know that when people are safe and in our clinics they're going to be able to be the kinds of folks they need to be out in our community supporting their families and succeeding in school the Henry's work and the management of the water here doesn't happen in a vacuum issues throughout Southern Idaho and honestly the whole Columbia Basin effect what happens on the Henry's Fork and this wild trout fishery so our work really can be moved and utilized you know across the entire northwest we represent over 5000 years of art and art coming from all different cultures throughout the world and over the years the museum has continued to bring the world to Oregon and to this part of the country as well as Oregon to the world after all of the work and all of the worry it was so nice to know that someone said yes we believe in you and we're going to help you take it to the picture that you want to take it to that's where we were the fruit of our work grows on other people's trees so take the time to grow a good crop take the time to steward the orchard that you're in in such a way that it will serve not just for the next harvest but for harvest to come [Music] [Music] [Music]
