How do deaf people from different countries communicate to each other?
I had the experience to meet some Deaf people from different countries: USA, Germany, Austria, France, UK, Spain, Italy, Belgium. Kuwait and China. All have different sign languages. I have to admit that I am not good exchanging in a different sign language than my own local one. My wife is much more multilingual. So why does exchanging in a different sign language works a lot better than in a voiced language?Disclaimer: This is my personal answer. This is in no way methodically researched but my personal impression. Perhaps it's wrong. If not already researched this would give a good research subject. It seems to me that there is a common visual language substrate. We all know that babys smile if they are happy. Deaf parents seem to understand their little children better than hearing parents because they take more of the little visual cues the babies give. From this substrate it's easier to make each other understand. It's difficult to explain. It's a mixture of corporeal poses, mimics and their dynamics (fast, slow, swift, light, heavy, etc.), and it's also one of the sources of the sign flections. This substrate is not learnt but in-born to everyone of us. Sign languages preserve this substrate at least partially. You can use phantomime. Together with the common substrate you can convey about the half of the meaning what you want to say. Some words are iconic. Iconic words are word where you immediately see what's meant. Like for car where you indicate the steering wheel with your hands. Different languages have different iconic words but at least you understand them immediately. Many Deaf people who are traveling know a little International Sign at least. International Sign is not a language per se but a set of conventions heavily influenced by the local languages of the participants. It's not invented like Esperanto but is mixed anew every time when a group of Deaf people meet.If you and the other Deaf use the same fingerspelling, you can fingerspell. This is especially useful for places of which you don't know the sign name.If you and the other Deaf know the voiced language, and if you two can lipread well, you can mouth the word in the voiced language. By mouthing mean truncating the word and say it without voice. My local sign language uses a lot of mouthing of words. Or you could use a pen and either draw a picture or write a word (but I never needed to do this). In short, you just sign your own language you know, but a bit slower and bigger and add a little phantomime. If you know International Sign, you switch to International Sign. If you don't know the International Sign word, you use the word of your local language. If your partner doesn't understand a word, she will tell you so. Then you explain the word with phantomime, mouthing, fingerspelling, analogues, etc. You two build up together a lexicon while talking with each other. You don't need a big lexicon. Sign Languages work with a small lexicon with heavily flexed words. So it does not take a lot of time to have a real exchange. However I know that Deaf tend to misunderstand each other if they don't talk the same language. But that's a different world compared to Hearing people who can't talk to each other at all.Carolina Loureiro asked, why a Deaf would know the voiced language but not the signed language. As it happens and is answered in Daniel Ly's answer to Does every language have an equivalent sign language? there is no one-to-one correspondence of signed and voiced languages. This means a Deaf from the UK and a Deaf from the USA both might know how to write and read English but not the other sign language.

Why do upper middle to upper class people think it is so easy for poor people to be upwardly mobile when most of them have just
This answer is coming from the US.****I'm not sure they do think that. Why do you suppose this is a commonly held idea?I classify as upper middle class by metrics of education and income, but it feels like a struggle to be where I am. So I don't imagine it's any easier for people in lower income brackets. I grew up lower middle class (or upper lower class!!) but I didn't know it at the time. There are a lot of ingrained attitudes about money and how to use it that change between classes. Upper class people may not realize that the strategies they use are not available to those with less. For the less fortunate, money gets eaten up so fast by food, rent, clothes, doctor bills, dentists, electricity, gas in the car, car repairs or bus tickets just to keep a job… not to mention everything kids need if you have them …. how can you save anything when those essentials are barely covered? It doesn't help that schooling costs are out of signNow for many. Those with means, who have always had means, may not understand all this. Here are a few things I can think of that are very difficult to do, but if you can thread the needle it will change your situation.Despite all the current rhetoric that college isn't for everyone, it still is true that education is the silver bullet, if you pick your studies carefully. Education is the one way that people in America can change their degree of mobility, even if only by a little. If you want a lot of money, do everything you can to get a degree in finance or banking. Doctors, lawyers, psychologists, bioresearchers, computer science engineers and electrical, mechanical, civil, and petroleum engineers can also make good money but not as much. One semester at a time, at community college if necessary, then transfer to university, but get that paper and get it in a field that will earn you enough that you can pay back student loans fast.Studying at a brick and mortar university also puts you in contact with people from all walks of life, so that's why this aspect of school is important. It is more valuable than an online degree.Even if you think you are too old, do it.Start saving money right this second, even a dollar at a time. Apps like Acorns and M1 allow you to invest in markets in small increments, and it takes a few years but you can really grow your money.Whenever I think about having a $7 beer or something like that, I think, “If I can afford that I can afford to put it away,” and I kick $7 to M1.Pooling resources is also massively helpful to your economic situation. So a good local community matters a lot, as does your level and quality of engagement with your community. Food pantries and farm shares are good if you can share with another family. Neighborhood tool cribs help everyone, and so does car pooling and barter. Phone trees when someone is sick and pooled child care are other money savers. Give as much as you can to your community and you won't feel as self conscious to ask when you need help. Go to your church/synagogue/mosque/temple regularly. Community that serves each other starts there, often.Excellent physical health is also super important. You will spend less on doctors. “Your health is your wealth" so lace up your shoes and get a $10/month gym membership or buy some weights for a few bucks on craigslist, and eat as healthy as you can.Turn off the TV and your phone entertainment and video games and go to the library and READ. A library card is free if you can show them an ID and a piece of mail like an electric bill with your address on it. Look for essential reading lists on line for the disciplines you want to develop and read all you can. The library is a blessed refuge for peace and quiet and study time if your home life is chaotic.Take all the free online classes you can through MOOC or edX or other apps. Learn how to develop good study habits. Seriously. Read books about sound financial practices.Teach yourself coding online with youtube or other free resources. It is good money.Don't get married or have kids until you are pulling down an actual salary. (That does NOT mean an hourly wage, no matter how good!!) It might mean waiting a while. But teenage parents are really starting off with extra hits against their ability to gain altitude. (I don't know your age or situation so this may not apply to you.)When you do start pulling down a good salary, live modestly. Forget fancy cars and flashy clothes. It's money down the drain. Get a nice house you own rather than rent, and don't go overboard or get in over your head. A house builds equity if you choose wisely. Not all communities feel like helping. Sometimes you have to escape “the crab pot,” and this can be the trickiest thing of all. I grew up in a place where any kind of success or potential was met with a sneer and “what, you think you're better than me?” Or there may be extended family or gangs that feel betrayed by someone wanting to pull away. Sometimes you have to figure out if you can deal with that, or if you can get away and start somewhere else, even a couple towns over, to break ties that are really holding you back and making you think you really don't deserve to be anything except poor, or that it is some kind of betrayal of where you come from to want something better for yourself, especially if you have potential. You will lose some of the people in your life, friends and girlfriends/boyfriends, but you will keep the ones who genuinely want you to succeed.“Those who matter don't mind, and those who mind don't matter.”I had parents who grew up relatively poor but who believed in education and made sure my sister and I got through college. She became a nurse and I became a teacher. We both left “the crab pot" at first. She came back and lives a better life in our hometown, married with 2 kids. I never went back and have no friends to see when I go visit her and my folks. My life is something I built somewhere else.Changing the way you think about money, education, family, and work may help you see and understand this differently, but I'm not gonna lie — the economic deck is incredibly stacked against anyone without at least a couple of advantages to start with.Hope you do great. Good luck!

How did your marriage end?
I got married to a good person actually. He agreed that he liked me and vice versa, so our families moved ahead. We both are from Tamil Nadu, India. We have spoken a few times before wedding and he was nice to me. At our wedding night he said first lets become friends and then we can move to the next step. I too accepted. In a month we moved to Ontario for his job. He was the one who encouraged me to do MS there and so I took admission in a leading university.Life was smooth in the initial days.No sex, no sharing time, no talking…literally I din’t exist for him, but we used to share the same bed. University started and I became busy with my studies and him in job. He was in a high position, so was always busy. If I ask him anything he would just answer to the point. Not even one single day he has eaten the food cooked by me. During his first birthday, I baked a wonderful cake which he din’t even see or cut. We had gone for one dinner in all the three years I stayed with him. Not even a single pic we have clicked. My parents and in laws constantly asked me for our pics to which each and every time I give them new reasons. He rarely answers my calls and replies to my messages. He used to talk happily to everyone except me! Then after some months I never called or messaged him. Even though I call him, he’ll not answer. After 3 months his colleague came to our house, a female. They had a good time in our house. Both forgot my existence. Till date they are friends, no relationship apart from that which I din’t know that time. I thought they were in relationship, fucking shocked. I went mad after many incidents, once when I met him out and he saw me and I waved at him to which he din’t even give a small smile and was very smart in acting as if he had not seen me, once when he was clicking close snaps with his colleague in my house, once when she came out running from our room when I just entered our house chased by him and many many times when I saw them in the streets of Ontario. This was the routine scenario of one year of married life. I got too much of stress that I ended up hospitalized multiple times due to fits, fainting, excess bleeding during periods and so many. I was 53 kg wen we were married and by the end of first year I was 46 kg and by second year I was 33 kg. After one and a half year he gave me divorce papers to sign. I was shattered to the core. I din’t read. It was just lying o the dining tableI completed my MS. One day I had a very bad stomach pain and I shrunk myself in the bed. He left to office and I stayed back. After few hours I went to use the washroom. I was barely able to walk. With each and every movement in my body, the pain increased. I called him thrice and as usual he never attended. I fell down from bed to the floor and I saw a pool of blood gushing from my vagina. The floor became stark red. I called him again for one last time and the result, as usual! I don’t know when I fainted. When I woke up I found me in hospital bed. The nurse told me that I was stressed to the extreme as a result I had heavy periods and my then husband has actually mentioned it as abortion in papers in the ambulance. When he had returned he had seen me and immediately called for an ambulance reasoning I had a miscarriage. This was narrated to me by the nurse and she consoled me that its not an abortion and I wasn’t pregnant. I was damn shocked. When my ex husband entered the room, he told me ‘Sorry, I mistook the scene for a miscarriage’. That is the end.I started shouting at the top of my voice threw everything that I got in my hand at him. The nurses and docs ran to help me and calmed me down.I got myself discharged and the first thing I did was I signed the divorce papers. He confessed to me that he wasn't happy with the marriage and he din’t want to get married at all. I never talked to him being in the same house. He is the one who took all the financial care of me and my studies. I used his card for all purchases mostly books and stuff. Not even once he has touched me and he suspected that I have had an abortion. I don’t know what on earth made him to think that I could have slept with someone. He told me one day that, on seeing me drenched in blood and my lower part full of blood he misunderstood for abortion. I wanted to kill him for that.We got divorced and I started working in a very reputed company in Toronto. I paid all the money he spent on me for 2.5 years. After making a good amount of money I moved to India, totally after 5 years. In those 5 years not even once I or he visited India. We then confessed to our parents that we got divorced. My close friend in Toronto helped me to tell my parents and she showed them all my medical history in Ontario to make them understand. She was the one who stood by my side when I underwent all these trauma. After 2 years I got married again to a man who had a girl child of 4 months and his wife left them to live happily with her boyfriend. My ex husband once saw me in India in a mall with my husband and daughter. I was happy with them. At first I noticed him (he din’t see me) and din’t look at him at all. I went in front of him, pretending that I had not seen him and showed him how happy I was. After that I never saw him. I’m thankful to him for divorcing me or I would have not got a cute family today. I’m thankful to him for not accepting me when I had begged him to live with me. Of course thankful to my husband’s ex wife for leaving him. Thanks for reading!Edit 1Even my second marriage is an arranged one. Its not about if its arranged or love marriage. During our courtship period he acted as a generous and trust worthy person. So my family thought he was a good match and so do I. We had no chance or any reason to suspect his behavior, character or what so ever.As Arjun Jawalkar has commented, my parents were not interested on any NRI guy and he is still not an NRI. But he took me abroad to get divorce easily, also I won’t be in constant touch with any of my relatives or friends. Background check was done, but it proved to be in effective.Yes, I returned the exact dollars he spent for me. I got an offer immediately after my divorce and joined job 2 months after that. I decided not to fly down to India, because definitely I would not have been able to return his money. For those who are heartbroken after reading this, please don’t feel so. Before my marriage I was an emotionally sensitive and weak one. But this bitter experience has made me strong like anything that I’m able to workout things all by my own.And for those who wanted to know how I ended up with my current life……My brother’s friend’s colleague’s friend was a single parent with a four months old kid. One day his mom, his baby and he came to our house for a festive occasion and that was the first time I met him. He was a single child to his mom and his dad passed away after his divorce. My parents actually liked him. He had no space for a second marriage in his life. But he was damn genuine. He took care of his little one more like a lovable mother. His mom was such a sweet heart and still is! I liked the baby and his mom more. Literally I fell for his charming baby. My parents asked me if I’m willing to marry him. I had no idea about that. His mom was also convinced with me.They arranged a meeting for us. I insisted him to bring his daughter along with him. I wanted to him to know each and everything that happened with me. I shared everything and had a wonderful time playing with his daughter. I avoided eye contact with him. He had tears in his eyes when I looked at him. I didn’t know how to react to it. Even he has had a painful past. We were silent for some time and we had dinner and he dropped me and they both left. After that we met up many a times and we both made sure we carried his daughter every time. I attended his friend’s wedding with them and his gang was such a fantastic one and I laughed my breath out on that day after many many years. We both became more close. When ever I went for shopping or outing I took his daughter also along with me. Even we both became attached and she used to identify me during video calls and make noise. In fact, she has spent 2 days with me in my house without her dad and my whole family was happy after a very long time.On October 5, when we went for a dinner, he proposed me while I was holding her in my arms. She was the the one who made noise immediately after he proposed and we both were glad about it. That is such a memorable day in our life. After 3 months we had a register marriage and now my daughter is 3.5 years old. We legally claimed our daughter’s custody to be ours so that no mishap occurs in her life.I’m a successful professor in a tier 1 college in Chennai and he is running his business successfully. Our families are happy and my brother is also married. One happy news is that we are expecting our second little one by September this year.Edit 2Woww quorans; sooooo much love for me and yeah this is something I wish I could keep it for the years to come.Am happy to announce our new arrival Lara Christopher.A very kind request to all my deary quorans, kindly pray for my kids and wish them all success in their lives. What are American customs that seem weird to foreigners?
I moved to California from the South of England back in 1999, after visiting regularly for extended business trips for nearly a decade. I’ve been an American citizen now for over a decade. Here are some of the things that I’ve encountered over the years that have made me go “Huh?”.Overwhelming friendliness. I lost count of how many Americans I’d meet while traveling who would make offers to “come and visit” if I was in their neck of the woods. They meant it too. One couple I barely knew let me stay in their apartment and then they went out of town and left me with their spare set of keys! T...

What are common scams in India?
Common Scams in India:Scene 1: Aadhar mobile number update:Went to a private Aadhar e-seva kendra, filled form and was ready to submit. Assumed it’s going to be nominal charges for same. Lady said 300rs. I said bye bye.Went to e-seva kendra. This time all done. Lady asked for 50rs. I said I know its 25rs.She said “Sir we have to pay rent as well.”I said “As you are asking very less compared to others I will pay 50rs.”Felt bad about it later. Complained to UIDAI via twitter. Got reply that they will register an official complain and take necessary action. In addition to this its very common that these e-seva center charge anything between 100–300rs for new Aadhar registration(should be completely free) or update(nominal charge of 25rs). Saw it happening in one instance, raised my voice but no one supported. Seems everyone else was just wanted to get their work done and I was creating a nuisance.Scene 2: Mobile number portability:Went to Idea store. With commanding voice, I said “I am here for MNP”, as I was giving them a new customer. Got reply from lady “minimum recharge of 475rs will be needed for MNP”. I said “MNP charge is 19rs, what recharge I do after that is my choice”. But this lead to nothing. Left the store.Visited a local idea retailer. Inquired about MNP and he said 178rs minimum recharge. Didn’t want to argue again. Paid the money and left for home. Felt bad again, later complained to idea_cellular and TRAI via twitter. Still to receive a response.Even for mobile and Aadhar linking some retailers charge money, its supposed to be completely free.Scene 3: Flash Back - Last monthHad a bad mood and my train was about to leave. Thought some water could help. Went to stall and asked for two water bottles. Vendor asked for 40rs(20rs per bottle, MRP was 15rs). I became furious and scolded him left and right. Got my money back (10rs). Complained to local DRM via twitter. Got response that action will be taken and immediate fine of 500rs is charged to vendor. You see what I am trying to say, here in our country(not only our country) people always find a way to dig out money or more money by this means or another, many are aware of it but many just ignore it. I know I can’t be idealistic all the time but it disturbs me seeing people’s common lust for money around me.Call it a scam or whatever, but it’s part of our life, it’s more of a mindset and reflection of our ideologies. We might accept it, ignore it or fight against it.Sometimes it seems like endless cycle, because “We the people” always find innovative ways to scam each other.Take Care.PS. Purpose of this answer not to brag, but to make aware. What you do after that is up to you.****Made few corrections, Thanks for views, comments and upvotes, If this helps even 1% of who read, my effort was worth of something.********Corrected Aadhaar update charges as 25rs, uidai official twitter handle communicated 25+taxes hence the confusion. I would like to thank all who appreciated me in comments. Still you see I was not perfect during handling these situations, hoping to get better with that.********Update: Idea care responded, got call from manager of said idea store, he apologised and asked me to visit again. He said there are no charges for mnp and recharge is optional. I told him to mention this everytime time any customer comes for mnp rather then projecting a mandatory recharge. Also asked to make sure his team members follow that. I said I or any of my friends will be visiting store anytime and will complain again if same incident happens. Hope this is some kind of win.Got update regarding e-seva kendra complaint as well. “Fine is imposed and warning is issued.” Couldn't check personally but this is official reply.****

Where can I find a technical co-founder in Scotland?
As with most areas of the world your best approach is to go out and meet people you think might be a good fit. Thankfully Scotland has a really great technical and business network so you shouldn’t have much trouble finding people.Convincing someone to join your company is quite a bit more difficult in the early days - getting a co-founder is basically the first sale you will make. If you can’t convince them of your product / service opportunity then you’ll also struggle with customers down the road! Figure out your pitch - what are you offering that they may want and can’t get in their current situation?Andrew Williams's answer to What's the best way to attract a technical cofounder and or lead engineer to your startup when you are not really in the tech scene network?

What does SMS mean on a text message?
Short Message Service (SMS), more colloquially known as ‘text,’ is a protocol used for sending short messages over mobile networks. The first SMS was sent in 1992; by 2010, SMS was the most widely used data application, adopted by 80 % of mobile subscribers. Then the rise of the smartphone came into picture.Smartphones paved the way for consumers to communicate through a variety of outlets – from email and instant messaging to over-the-top content messaging apps. However, despite the growth in other communication channels, SMS is still widely in use and remains one of the primary channels of communication. Why? Here are four crucial reasons.SMS is the most effective way to signNow users, with a 90 % read rate in minutesWhen it comes to timeliness of delivery, SMS maintains the highest engagement rate in comparison to emails and OTT apps.SMS is available as long as you have a mobile phone and service plan. This makes its global signNow soar as there are no pre-existing connections required, such as accepting friend requests or requiring two parties to download the same app.The lower barriers to communication let users receive messages quickly, making it ideal for sending short, time-sensitive content.SMS is a one- size- fits- all solution which makes anybody (with a mobile number) signNowableThe technology for sending and receiving SMS is not reliant on high speed internet, essentially making anyone in modern society signNowable.SMS Messages SMS stands for Short Message Service. How do I know if my phone is tapped?
As it turns out... My VP BD had something happen very "unexpected" on his Gmail account, then on his wife's Gmail account, then some other accounts. Eventually, it turned into a wire fraud thing, and he called the FBI.The FBI refused to take his call, made from his cell phone. Eventually, he got someone to say to him "Sir, we have a policy of not taking multi-party calls, and our instruments show that there's another party on your line".He drove to the Portland field office, and demonstrated that he was calling by himself, and that somehow, it was still showing up as a multi-party call. The field agent very "gently" encouraged him to surrender the phone for a few days, told him that this phone was toast, to get a new phone, and but to not transfer the old number to the new phone until he got the OK from the FBI.About a week later, he was called, thanked, and told that he could now port out his old number to the new phone, and that if he wanted it, he could pick up the old phone, but not to ever use it again as a phone.I found that to be of great interest. The old phone, a Samsung S6, was new, only a few months old, replacing a predecessor which had an unfortunate encounter with a swimming pool. We walked through his travel, and identified a handful of times when the phone was not with him, and in a location where it was not in a locked container. It's clear that someone gained access to the phone and inserted malware and/or cloned the IMEI and SIM card. Two of the occasions were at very high-profile conferences where a large number of high-net-worth individuals were known to be attending; odds are that he wasn't specifically targeted, but was caught in a drive-by.The FBI isn't talking about what they found. My digital forensics guy says the phone was definitely jail broken, which is completely beyond the capability of the phone's owner, but that it had been completely wiped by the FBI so he couldn't tell what had previously been there. So, I've got one proven case of phone tapping and cloning in my hip pocket, only a few weeks old. I've made some inquiries, in the usual circles, and ran into an FBI agent who pretty pointedly asked me to knock it off. Based on that, I suspect that there's a new malware variant out there that lets someone do this, and take over your phone via remote control as well as monitor your activity, scrape passwords, etc. and that this is an active on-going investigation. It's pretty scary, particularly as easy as it is to download invasive code from web sites these days.Good cell phone hygiene for me now includes (a) never ever leave my phone out of my signNow (b) don't web surf on my phone and, as always, (c) friends interested in security don't let friends use Android phones. As to how to check... try calling the FBI to report it, from your cell phone. If they won't take your call...
