I figured that since I'm originally from Illinois but now I've been living in Florida for 12 years it's very fitting for me to make a video about the differences that I've noticed now between living in Illinois and living in Florida because there are quite a few differences so I'm going to cover some of the main ones in today's video one of the main differences that you've probably already figured and one of the most obvious ones is the weather obviously the weather is quite different in Illinois than it is in Florida but better is a term that needs to be used wisely because not everybody enjoys the same kind of weather some people moving to Florida from Illinois might think it's great that we have like the endless summer here however if you're not used to the heat because it can get very hot and very relentless like the heat just doesn't stop you know if you're not used to that and you prefer it to be a little cold sometimes then coming from Illinois you're not really gonna like that but the weather is quite different between Illinois and Florida that is for sure another thing that's different that I talked about a little bit in one of my other videos and I will say it again is the state income taxes Florida has no state income taxes Illinois does and the sales taxes in Illinois are also higher and Illinois is one of the worst states as far as financials go right now so if I was still living in Illinois I would be really careful and really want to know where all that money was going because you know it seems to be a very bad situation when it comes to the financial part of running the state and Florida actually has a surplus which is more than a balanced budget that's actually more money than they need to run the state and that is one thing I'm proud about living here in Florida now another thing to take into consideration if you're coming from Illinois and moving to Florida the traffic here is generally a lot worse than it is in Illinois unless you're coming from Chicago but if you're from pretty much anywhere else in Illinois you're gonna notice a big difference between the traffic there and the traffic here but that also does depend on where you decide to move in Florida because if you're in Miami Beach like me the traffic is pretty much horrendous all year long but in other parts of the state it's really not so bad so the more rural you get then obviously the less traffic there's going to be and that's kind of the same way everywhere but you know Florida's a very touristy state and so there's always a lot of people here trying to check out you know all the different attractions that we have to offer so there's just more cars on the road and they're from all over the world and that means bad drivers people don't really don't know how to drive I don't know where they learned to drive in their country but a lot of times it seems like they really didn't learn how so that's one thing to be prepared for if you decide to move to Florida from Illinois Florida is also a much more culturally diverse state than Illinois here it seems to be a melting pot like I kind of mentioned in the last point that there are just people here from everywhere all across the globe I've met people from all over Europe from Asia from South America and other parts of the United States so pretty much you name it there's people here probably living in Florida from that area in Illinois you know I hardly ever met anyone that actually wasn't from Illinois and if they were like an out-of-towner they were probably like just from another state like Wisconsin or Indiana or something like that another big difference people in Florida are a lot more active than they are in Illinois now I don't include myself in that category because before I moved to Florida I was still very active and still going to the gym I was religious about it five days a week I just didn't quit I did it I always took my fitness series from a very young age but you I can't really say the same about a lot of other people that live there whenever winter comes they just hibernate in their houses for a few months and it seems like you never feel around when they come out 20 pounds heavier so no disrespect to Illinois but you got to start working on that because without your health the reality is you have nothing without your health you have to take care of yourself if you want to live a long healthy life and spend time with your family and friends now one of the other main differences between living in Florida and Illinois that I never really considered is that Florida is all the way on the southeastern side of the country and I'm all the way down towards the bottom of Florida on top of that so if you ever want to take a road trip somewhere like I like to do it takes like six hours just to get out of the state of Florida and then you're still in the whole southeast of the United States and if live in Illinois that's a very good place to have like as a home base because if you have your home base in Illinois you can take a road trip pretty much anywhere and you'll be able to get there a lot faster than you would if you're leaving from Florida so it's like very central it's kind of like right in the middle of the country almost so that's kind of a plus that actually miss about Illinois now one new thing that Illinois has that they didn't have when I was living there is recreational marijuana in fact in January this year in 2020 they just approved that and now they have recreational marijuana in Florida we still only have medical marijuana but it seems like all of the states are falling like dominoes and I've heard that this year Florida is putting recreational weed back on the ballot so I'm pretty confident that by next year Florida will be one of the next states to follow suit another major point that Florida has that Illinois doesn't is they have a lower cost of living lower taxes lower unemployment and just an overall higher quality of life and I can totally attest to that being a Floridian now for twelve years and coming from Illinois ever since I've been here I just think that my life has just been so much better and I'm not trying to brag and I'm not trying to bring people from Illinois down in any way I'm just sharing my own personal experience and I know a lot of people are really thinking about moving to Florida especially this time of year so that's one thing I can really tell you that if you're looking for just an all-around uplifting better experience in life and have things be more cheaper and you know higher quality then I would definitely say that maybe moving to Florida could be good for you if you're coming from Illinois and guys just so you know I really feed off of the interaction and the comments that I get from you guys if you have any other ideas about comparing different states for living or cost of living or any other video ideas do you think that would be good for me to make then please put it below I would love to hear from you it's just one of those things that you know it makes it feel like really worth it doing these videos when I know that you guys are paying attention and you're listening and it just makes me feel good knowing that you guys are getting some value out of this so make sure to drop a comment below so another big plus about living in Florida over Illinois have a ton of stuff to do here now I'm not saying there isn't anything to do in Illinois but we have some of the world's coolest attractions you know like Disney and Universal a ton of different beaches we have more beaches here in this state than any other state and we have the Everglades which is also a really cool thing to come and visit if you've never been we have the Florida Keys pretty much the things to do here are just endless you could live in Florida your whole life and probably not do everything so Illinois has things to do too I'm not saying it doesn't but you know it's just like got that cool vibe going here in Florida where you know those are things that everybody wishes they could do one day and you know they come here for vacation you know most people don't go to Illinois for vacation so I guess that's the point I'm trying to make now since I left Illinois when I was really young I didn't realize this too much until a couple years before I left but Illinois is a far more corrupt state than Florida we've had three governors in the state of Illinois get thrown into prison and you know combine that with the high taxes and you know still like nothing getting done it's a very big red flag for me but it looks like now over there maybe they have a better chance with the new governor they already legalized the medical weed like I said and the state really needs the funds from that so hopefully that's gonna work out well for them you know I'm pulling for Illinois I'm from there and I want my friends and family that lived there to also have as good of a life as they can another major difference that I see between Florida and Illinois and I'm just speaking between like where I used to live in Illinois compared to where I live now here in Florida is that I know the cost of living in general when you put it as a whole is cheaper in Florida however like if you want to buy your own house in Illinois for example the barrier to entry is very low especially for new homebuyers that don't have a lot of money you can buy a nice house over there for a hundred one hundred and twenty thousand dollars and you could even live in that house to hold your whole life it would be enough space they have a decent sized yard and here in Florida I really don't see that being an option buy a single-family home here like I said in one of my last cost of living videos you know you're looking at at least two hundred and fifty thousand dollars in most air you could buy a condo for that $120,000 price point but you know it's not gonna be the same as really owning your own home and having a single-family house to live in now I would say if you're considering moving to Florida from Illinois to definitely pay attention to all these points that I mentioned in this video because there might be some things there that you actually didn't think about and you know the one of the last things you want to do is make them move and be like oh I should have thought of that first you know definitely take all these things into consideration that I said and if you want to learn more about living in Florida check out some
