all right good morning everybody my name is susan gamble i'm the director of the west virginia statewide after school network and very excited to have all of you that are joining us today we are recording this session um it will be available later but it will not um to go back and listen to but it's not going to be available later for west virginia stars hours as i just mentioned as you're joining you want to make sure that your zoom name is your actual name if you are needing those west virginia stars hours so that we can help to get those assigned to the right people and also at the end of the session today we will have a survey if you are needing stars hours that we're going to ask you that you'll have to complete to receive star star's hours but we would ask also all of our participants today to complete that survey it's going to be very short and just help us give us some good information i'm excited to have it with us today jocelyn crawford jocelyn is the 4-h youth development extension agent for kanawha county and prior to joining us at the extension service jocelyn was a stem teacher for kanawha county school system i'll let her explain a little bit more about that but we're excited to um have you with us today and jocelyn i will be monitoring um the q a section everybody there um you can submit your questions there or you can put them in the chat and also we have a question from sheila should all participants share their name yes we would love for you to share your name in organization thanks so much jocelyn all righty good morning everybody um as you can already hear um i'm home much like most of us are um and so i've got two dogs and um a kindergartener so if you hear some background noise that's what's going on um so um it's nice to be with you guys this morning um so just to make sure just as susan said um if you are needing um stars credit for this session make sure you change your zoom name to your actual name and somebody in the chat asked about participants you should see um a little uh floating bar like a little black bar at the top or the bottom of the side of your screen it's on the same bar that says mute stop video you should have a little icon that has like a little person and should say participants you find your name you hit the little blue more button and then you click rename and then you can change your name to your name and organization um you can also put your name into the chat that's totally fine too um but we just want to make sure we have a record of you um your your name and your organization so you can get credit for being here this morning um so i'm going to go back one slide so i can sort of set up um what our training is going to be about today so uh we are going to um be doing some stem learning by doing so these are easy hands-on stem activities using 4-h project books um so just like susan said i am the 4-h agent for kanawha county and i work for wvu extension service um and you can see the pictures here on the screen are uh just a few of the little um just a few of the um project books that we're gonna uh take a look at um i'm gonna be giving you guys tips about how to um use stem project books on your own um what makes our 4-h project books um so nice we're also going to talk about how to get in touch with your local extension agent if you would like to partner with your 4-h agent to get some of this um uh hands-on um curriculum to your after-school participants or you know the kids that you're working with we'll talk about all that stuff um if you have any questions um like susan said she will be monitoring the chat so you can ask a question in the q a that would be best um and uh so that way everyone can see your question and we can make sure that we get that question answered okay all right so um here is the one thing i want to tell you guys before we get started we are going to do a hands-on activity if we were in person it come with me on on my uh of my um imagination journey if we were in person um you might be able to uh i would have like stations set up right we would have one station where we would be doing kitchen chemistry and one station with physics and one station with our outdoor exploring activity so but if you would like to do this optional hands-on activity you absolutely can all you need is cornstarch water a spoon and a bowl so if you would like to do the hands-on activity with me here in about 15-20 minutes you can go grab those things and i can't tell you exactly how much cornstarch or water because we'll talk about that it just sort of depends okay uh i do see in the chat that somebody said that you guys don't have the option so you see audio settings chat raise hands q and a and leave so you guys can't see the partici the participant um a little icon that's okay so just make sure that you put your yep so share your name in the chat and complete your evaluation and that's all we need so that's perfect thank you susan i want to make sure you guys get credit like susan said i was a high school science teacher and i taught one year of middle school one year one year for me it was enough in middle school but i taught high school um science at nitro high school and i taught a little bit at riverside high school here in kanawha county and so i know all about showing up for the training making sure you put your name on the paper so you can definitely get those hours in that credit okay so first things first we're going to talk about what is 4-h um so some people may be um familiar with what the 4-h program is and for west virginia 4-h is is of course unique we like to consider ourselves very unique amongst uh other states so maybe you've done um participated in 4-h have kids who participated in 4-h so these are our most common questions so um don't you all raise pigs yes some of us do among other things foragers do more than raise pigs can you teach me how to can that's another question we get a lot um and personally i can't but i can find someone who can can that's my little joke um isn't 4-h a part of ffa no 4-h is different from ffa but we absolutely love all our f affairs um don't i see you guys at the state fair yes we are there every single year um and then the question we get also is when we have participants who are um signing their kids up does my kid have to be into farming in order to join and the answer for that is not at all 4-h is a lot of different things so 4-h is a national youth development program through land-grant universities so in west virginia we have two separate land-grant institutions we have west virginia university who i work for and we have west virginia state university um which is located in institute here in kanawha county um so those two 4-h programs are separate and we do different sorts of things west virginia university 4-h we do a lot of camping we do a lot of community clubs um and then of course we do like school enrichment and things like that west virginia university does a little bit of different things um so our 4hs and 4h stand for head heart hands and health okay um and so we when we think about programming and we think about um uh basically educating our kids we try to think of the whole child right so our head our heart our hands our health we're always trying to make good decisions um make choices out of empathy we're trying to do things that are hands-on hands-on and making sure that we're looking at um the kids overall health and well-being in west virginia youth are free to learn by doing um in any of our 4-h activities and it's also free or inexpensive to join west virginia 4-h doesn't have any statewide fees associated with the program which is really awesome um and so if there is um a 4-h club in your community you can get started with absolutely no money and then of course we have opportunities for our youth ages uh five through 21 so some states um stop doing 4-h programming at age 18 but west virginia we continue to keep our up to 21 year olds they can go to camp they can participate in club activities there are collegiate 4-h clubs things like that all right so we have our 4-h mission mandates so we've got citizenship healthy living and science and if you'll forgive me i'll be back in one second i'm gonna see what my dog's barking about i'll be back in one second hi everybody just want to be right back with us it's just part of the fun of uh working from home right um and then also having make schedules where okay i'm so sorry you guys if my husband's not here and it's just it's just my my dogs and my kid and he was barking and barking it's nothing he's in the basement now okay so our our 4-h mission mandates um like i said citizenship healthy living and science so um are things like civic engagement service civic education leadership healthy living things like nutrition and fitness social and emotional health tobacco and alcohol and drug abuse prevention and then science which we're going to focus on today because we're doing stem uh learning stim by doing um everything from engineering technology consumer sciences environmental science math animal and life sciences and agriculture so there is something for everyone and like we're gonna see there are project books for every single kind of topic under the sun that goes with these mission mandates um and um any basically anything that you can you can think of we've got some sort of free curriculum or project book um available that sort of fits your um topic all right so what do kids in 4-h do we do all sorts of things um one big thing in west virginia is that we do summer camps so we have our state 4-h camp at jackson's mill and almost every single county in west virginia has their own county camp we also have lots of community clubs that our 4-hrs participate in so um we can have everything from a community club which is a sort of the traditional um you know kids who live in like a neighborhood or a town get together and they have their club meetings um we also do what's called what are called spin clubs special interest clubs um and uh it in everything from lego robotics to baking to arts and crafts and that's actually been something that we've been able to do in the middle of covid not being able to do in-person programming we've had some success doing that online um and then projects is another thing um that kids can do and whereas summer camps and clubs are things that kids do to get together to do 4-h projects are an individual thing so kids can pick 4-h projects on anything from cooking to woodworking to small engine repair to raising animals and you can see the picture of our of the 4-h here with her cow so in a lot of counties those are the the projects that kids participate in most are raising livestock but there are tons of project books um that are on all different sorts of topics so you can see here just two we're going to talk about today science fun with physics so kids go through the book and do all kinds of different really simple physics experiments and learn a little bit more about that and then explore the outdoors that's another great project book um that encourages kids to get out and get um you know learning like the basics of hiking and identifying plants and animals and things like that so 4-h project books sort of diving into a little bit more about what makes our project books great and how you guys can start to use them they are designed for a 4-hour to do over one to three years the all the activities in a project book are designed to help the kids investigate something they're interested in or to help them develop a skill um so if kids are interested in say um like collecting um like bobble heads just an example um we may not not have us we don't have like a specific project book about collecting little bobble head dolls but we do have um books where the kids can sort of choose their own adventure it's called an i decide self-determined project book and so they can investigate that so if there's not an interest that's directly um identified that the project book is specifically about there are ones where kids can sort of make up their own all of our project books are written and peer-reviewed by extension services which is huge so um i know when we're trying to think of programming to do with kids whether it's after school whether it's in a daycare situation whether you're in a classroom um i if you're like me the first thing i do is google it right so i'm thinking okay um i i would be really interested in like doing tie-dye with my kids so the first thing i look i do is i google it right and then you find all these different websites there's all these different methods of doing ways of doing it some websites might have a little bit more of an explainer on um like the science behind tie-dye and some may not but the good thing about um project books are you have your set of activities they're already there in the book for you and they all have um meaningful questions that go along with them they have great explainers on how the science behind something works or um how the you know theory of something behind it works whatever project or whatever activity that you're working on um and um they are written by you know people whose job it is to create these uh materials which is great so not saying that that um you know the homemade tie-dye kit that i come across online not to say that author isn't great but there is something to be said that it is written by somebody who is employed by a university's extension service it has been peer-reviewed so it's gone through that process where other extension professionals have read through it and said hey this is great kids can definitely learn from this um another great thing about our 4-h project books are they are free through an extension professional so if you uh contact your 4-h office your local 4-h office which we'll talk about before we uh leave you know i can answer specific questions about how to get in touch with people that's no problem um you a lot of times your agent will be more than happy to give you a copy of a project book or if you need to purchase it on your own it's very low cost so there's lots of different projects on a range of different topics at the shop 4-h store and um i'm going to stop sharing my screen for one second so i can just show you what the website looks like and you don't have to be um like you don't have to have a special uh access code or anything like that to um access the shop4h website um you just have to be a person right so it's available to the public anybody at all can check out the shop 4-h website so let me just pull this up for you guys and i'll share my screen with you here we go okay so you can receive 10 off your first order that's great okay so there's tons of different 4-h stuff i mean if you are into 4-h you can buy yourself a 4-h hat or a beanie or whatever but if you look under curriculum okay here are all different kinds of um categories so everything from stem which is what we're talking about today to cloverbuds which are younger kids to um you know spanish language materials all sorts of different stuff so i'm just going to click on science technology engineering and math and i will actually um make sure that you guys get the um the powerpoint if you would like it we'll make sure that susan shares that out and the link is there it's literally shop4h.org um if you just google shop s-h-o-p 4-h it'll pop up for you so in stem here are all the different things that you can purchase okay so everything from our awesome mars base camp kits that you can buy and that's 17.95 which is kind of on the expensive side um we've got books about robotics um we've got a set of five steam clothing curriculum there's just tons of different stuff magic of electricity so these are available to anybody to go in and purchase um so if you're looking for um you know for instance if you're trying to do like a like a a food science uh uh set of activities with your kids right you can go in here and you can you know search food science um and you can see what kind of project books are available and then you can purchase yourself one if you need to or better yet you can get in touch with your extension professional and say hey i saw this really awesome food science project book on the s op 4-h website can you tell me more about it can i get a copy of one myself like i said we'll talk about that a little bit more so that's the shop 4-h website it's really awesome and it even is broken down by gray level if you look on the left hand side over there if you've got a specific age range of kids so if you're working with high schoolers 9 through 12 if you're looking for younger kids k through 2 so there's a lot of different ways to sort of sort out that information okay so i'm gonna hit stop share and if you have any questions as we go this isn't like a normal zoom um you can type them in the q a or you can type them in the chat and we'll make sure that we get those answered for you guys all right so let's go back over here and i will share my screen again all right let me get to a place there we go okay perfect all right oh no we started from the beginning here we go i'm gonna move forward all right so we are going to do our optional hands-on activity now okay so if you want to participate you absolutely can if you'd rather not if you're in your office if you'd rather not get your hands dirty i totally get that but i'm gonna show you um the activity out of our kitchen chemistry book which is one of my favorite project books um and i'll show you the activity first and then we'll i'll do it real quickly and just you know sort of model the activity for you all and then we'll go back and look at the discussion questions okay so um this is just a little uh sort of this is a screenshot um a pdf file of um the activity out of the book and i actually have all of the all of the activities that i share in the powerpoint there's actually a link at the end of the powerpoint um where you can you can go and download these so this is sort of like your freebie activity so if i do this we talk about the questions and you're like oh that's a great activity i want to do that with my kids as long as you guys get the powerpoint and have the link at the end you can absolutely do that um so for our kitchen chemistry book the the sort of theme is that you are um trying to defend the earth from these alien invaders right and so the only things you have um to protect the earth from to try to figure out how to um make sure these aliens come in peace is just the stuff in your kitchen so not every single project book has that um sort of up where you know they give you a situation but it's actually really cute especially younger kids really like that idea um and this is the very first experiment out of the book so you can see that it's you know it's kind of like fun and colorful um tells you what supplies you're going to need it gives you a little introduction about non-newtonian fluids so a non-newtonian fluid is um a liquid that or a substance that that behaves as both a liquid and a solid depending on how much pressure you put on it um and so if you're doing this activity with kids it gives you the setup right here so all you need to do is make sure you have your supplies has the little set up here because remember all of these project books are designed for kids to be able to do on their own if you do them with a group it's super effective because it walks you through step by step okay here's your introduction um it has your learning outcomes if you look it might be a little bit small for you guys but if you look here in this little orange box it says learning outcomes project skill life skill educational standard so you can sort of tie it and connect it to whatever you're teaching um and then um it gives you your directions okay so i'm actually gonna stop sharing and so you guys can see me do this little activity and it's super simple you wouldn't think you'd be able to do so much with just a couple ingredients so okay so i have my my empty bowl so i'm gonna make some new place i have my empty bowl i have my cornstarch okay there it is i'm trying not to make sure i'm trying trying to make sure not everything disappears in my virtual background here um i've got my little uh cup of water here and i have a little bit of food coloring just because we're gonna make green like oobleck so um in the activity or in the description and the um in the um directions for the activity you know it tells the kids um to mix the cornstarch and the water and just because i've done this like a hundred times um this particular activity just because it tells you you need equal amounts of cornstarch and water doesn't mean you always do so i'm going to put my cornstarch in there i'm going to add my water okay and then i'm just going to start mixing it up so the kids even though this is so simple the kids love this activity so you add a little bit okay you make your little cornstarch and water slurry and then you keep you keep adding your cornstarch i should probably put my little drop of food coloring in there so you keep adding your cornstarch until it sort of gets difficult to stir and it becomes sort of like a ball of putty and again if we were all in person we could all be doing this and talking about it let me try this one more time i know i keep disappearing into the background here but okay so we're mixing it up we're mixing it up okay all right and then ooh i might actually be a little bit liquidy here might need a tiny bit more cornstarch yeah give me one second there we go got a little bit more about the big thing of course starch and add a little bit more in here and it is messy so you know with all of our you're trying to do stem and your school program or your daycare program and you know sometimes stem activities are a little bit expensive but the good thing about these project books are everything again is for kids to be able to do at home right so they try to keep the cost of all the activity materials down um and then you know they're all things that you can find easily at the store so it's cornstarch and water and food coloring you know that's really easy to find okay so it might be hard for you guys to see but i'm gonna pick up this piece of oobleck that i have so you can see how it's runny right i don't know if you can see how green it is but that's that that's when it's running but then when i apply pressure it becomes like a ball now that's kind of hard to see so it's both a liquid so you see how it's trying to it's kind of dripping through my fingers here so it's both a liquid okay and then when i smush it together it's definitely a solid like it's breaking apart like you can see like the chunks of it zoom is not the best way to do this but and then you see how it becomes drippy again so if you found that activity just online right like that would be a really cool activity and you'd say oh the kids would be oh my gosh that's crazy i can't believe that you know if i don't apply pressure it's like a liquid with but then when i do apply pressure it's solid and you'd be surprised even like my high school kids when we do this like my um our older 4-h our 18 to 21 year olds they even love it jocelyn we had a question about um does it matter what type of spoon or bowl you use such as wooden versus metal oh um no that's a really good question no it does not matter and you can actually i would you know recommend getting in with your hands you don't even need necessarily a spoon a spoon you could just use your hands to mix it up um that's a good question though you could use any kind of spoon any kind of bowl um what you're looking for is just um the the right ratio of uh water to cornstarch so you get something that behaves both as a solid and a liquid so i'll show you my bowl here and it's kind of hard to see i'm disappearing today so it's a liquid when we pour it like this and we don't apply any pressure but then if i try to like dip my spoon in it behaves like a solid do you see that it's so crazy yeah you can definitely also uh i can see comments oh great brittany said you can add food coloring and i did for some reason the color on my computer is completely blown out it's sort of like a nice not quite a gak green do you guys remember jack from nickelodeon i'm sure i'm sure some some of you guys do you would buy the gak like in the little tube at the store and it would always dry out in a day and it was oobleck all it was was cornstarch and water mixed together with some food coloring so so that's just a really extremely simple activity doesn't take hardly any time doesn't take any real um investment in the materials um and so you do it with the kids and they love it but then your project book gives you some great follow-up questions so i'm going to share my screen again so we can sort of talk about what we saw here so um when it talks about so underneath what to do it tells you um how to mix the cornstarch and the water together and then it asks like what happens squeeze some of the mixture in your hands how does it feel try to roll it into a ball then let it flow through your fingers what does it look like and then what it also does is it has um if you guys have if you have a scale to use you can also weigh how much it is um at the beginning how much the materials weigh at the beginning and then weigh them at the end and you can talk about conservation of mass where um you know mass is neither created nor destroyed and and you know even if you're not a stem expert even if stem isn't in your wheelhouse um and that wouldn't be necessarily something that you would think of on your own this you know the project book does a good job sort of leading you there and getting you to um be able to explain that at least the beginnings of that information to the kids so it's really great again these are activities where kids are are are doing these project books on their own but it's what it's designed for but they're great to use in a group um then on the other page over here it gives us a little explanation so it says non-newtonian fluid can act both as a solid and a liquid it reacts to stretch stress or pressure with increased viscosity or resistance to flow so you can talk about how when um you are allowing the oobleck to sort of flow through your fingers or flow off of your spoon you can talk about how it has low viscosity and then you can talk about how when you tried to roll it into the ball it had high viscosity and so they're learning something they're learning these chemistry terms that um you know eventually those are things that they'll they'll need to know about um without um getting into having them you know write the definitions and things like that um and it's really easy to clean up too that's another great thing so after they're all finished you just throw the oobleck in the trash and then rinse it out and then you're all set to go um so i'm trying to see if there's anything i want to my cat's joining me now to was to make sure that i highlighted everything i wanted to from the project page but yeah so it just does a really good job of not only giving you the instructions on how to do the activity but also explaining the science behind it and putting it on a level that is easy for kids to read and understand so all project books are written um for kids on this third to fourth grade reading level so if you're doing it with younger kids this activity works perfectly i've done it with our cloverbuds which is our um you know our five years old five to eight year old kids and it works for them you just have to you know do a little bit more explaining um and like i said we've done this with our high schoolers even um and it's just one of those activities that that is good for everything so um as you continue through the kitchen chemistry book if it if this is like oh well this seems like a project book that would be really interesting i'd be interested in doing it um there are a lot of great activities in it there's one where um you make um acid base indicator with red cabbage which is super duper fun um there's another one where you make a homemade fire extinguisher um and again they're all with um materials that you would just find around the house in your kitchen um so all right does anybody have any questions specifically about this activity again if it was in person we could all make our own oobleck but try it if you have cornstarch at home you can give it a try i'm gonna check the q a to make sure let's see susan answered some questions or people had questions let's see okay so yeah so if you have any questions just remember just um type it in the q a or type it in the chat and just like susan said make sure you're typing it uh you can choose um you can choose for your chat to be read by all panelists and attendees so that way everybody can see your answer okay so um next thing we're going to talk about i'm just going to run through these next couple of activities and do just a little bit of explaining so the next one we have here is out of our book science fun with physics so science fun with kitchen chemistry was the last one this is science fun with physics and again instead of having um really easy simple hands-on activities that have to do with chemistry um these have to do with um motion um and there's there's a lot of really easy engineering to do in here too so this one is called the loopy plane so the kids are making a variation on a paper airplane um and what we've done before here with this activity is the kids can make their loopy plane so all it takes is like some index cards and tape and scissors and a straw and the kids make loops so they make a large loop and then they make a smaller loop and they tape it to their straw and then they fly it through the air right and so they can add different amounts of loops they can make their it can take two straws together um they can make their loops really big or really small and this sort of gives them a chance to do um a little bit of inquiry so about i don't know five or six years ago like that was the big buzzword in science ed um and you know it's still important now but i don't hear it quite as much but the whole thing was inquiry so you know the kids are doing this these activities they're figuring things out for themselves um and you know these um project booked activities are really easy way to do that um because you have everything you need and everything's really simple um so um when i've done this activity as well for the loopy plane um i've also had kids make like a traditional um paper airplane and then we flew the paper airplane and we flew our loopy plane and we compared and contrasted um you know the distance of flight um the path of flight so did the loopy plane go up and down um did the uh you know did your regular paper airplane have like a downward trajectory there's lots of of ways that you can um uh sort of spark a conversation about why things fly right um and then like i said just like in every project book it has a great explanation over here um two different sizes of hoops help the straw but keep balance as it flies through the air the big hoop keeps the straw level by providing air resistance and the smaller hoop at the front helps the straw stay on a straight course so it has a little explanation there of why this particular design of loopy plane works when we're flying it so that's another good one so this one is out of science fun with physics all right we're gonna move to the next one here that will let me there we go so this is exploring the outdoors so this is um uh a little bit more environmental science so i think sometimes when we think of stem science technology engineering and math we tend to think of like chemistry physics building things in engineering um but the outdoors are a really great resource and especially um you know since uh kids have been cooped up and i know the weather's not great but on a nice day you can take the kids out during any season and this is a really easy activity where you just take a walk through some sort of green space it doesn't have to be the woods um but you can see what kind of birds you might find so these are all different kinds of songbirds everything from a robin to a mourning dove to a turkey you might see a turkey on your walk out with the kids um blue jays are red tail hawk so if you see any of these birds out and about you can of course make a note of what they look like and color it in but then after you spend some time outdoors f there are any of these birds that you don't find then the kids can do a little bit of research online to see the marking and the colorings of all the different types of birds and then they can color it in themselves um so it talks about over here on the background so this particular book was written by um the universe or the ohio state university um so it talks a lot about ohio's woodlands um and of course ohio is a lot like west virginia the woods that they have in eastern ohio or a lot you know part of the appalachian mountains where we are here in west virginia and it talks about um camouflage it talks about different coloring of animals whether they're bright what that might indicate um if there may be uh have coloring that help them blend into the background talks a little bit about camouflage and things like that so again this is one of those activities that are great for kids of all ages whether you've got um a group of second graders you've got a group of of high school kids they can do this activity and you're doing a little bit more of the environmental education and spending some time outside so and i know a lot of us our facilities maybe are in places where we wouldn't think that we'd be able to see songbirds and things like that but um i live in downtown charleston about two blocks from the capitol and i'm amazed at the variety of animals that i see i mean we've got all different kinds of birds that are here um you know and then we've got critters that you know maybe we maybe uh i don't like to see as many of things like possums and raccoons and things like that but you'd be amazed even if you're in a city environment taking the kids outside and having them look around to see what kind of wildlife they see you could even do the same activity with um plants or things like that so there you go so there's exploring the outdoors and that's just one activity out of this book there's lots of them that you can do no matter where you are you don't have to be out someplace on a hiking trail to do them and then the last one is um discovering computer science and programming through scratch now this one might be the best one that lends itself to be to being done virtually or remotely and i don't know if anybody is in that situation where you're having to provide some sort of enrichment or um after school programming online virtually but this is a really good project book and it's for kids that are a little bit older i would say third or fourth grade is probably the youngest you can go but it's a project book that right that walks kids step by step through how to begin coding or programming using a free platform called scratch and it tells the kids shows them how to get started um you know it has the uh the uh the instructions here you go to scratch.mit.edu tells them how to make their own um account and then if you look on the right hand side over here it actually shows them all of the different drag and drop drag and drop tools that they're going to have to code their um little character there in the center of the screen and again since these project books are designed for kids to do on their own they're really great if you're working with a group you know whether you're virtual or you're in person um because uh you know if there's a kid who wants to work ahead they have all the instructions in front of them right or if there's a kid who's maybe taking a little bit longer you can go around and visit with those kids and help them if they need help but they can always refer back to the instructions since they're already there in the project book um so that's a really good one and i've been learning how to do scratch and i know uh when i started i didn't think that i would be the person who would know anything about computer programming um but um when i was able to go back when i was able to go into the schools back you know this time last year the kids would see me coming and they're like oh there's the computer science lady so it's very easy to learn and teach yourself how to do that if you're using the project books um so uh we that those are those are my four examples that i have for you guys and just like i said at the end of this um powerpoint there is a link in all four of those activities so the oobleck activity the loop-de-plane activity the bird activity and this beginning scratch activity um i have the links to what i've shown you on the screen so you can use them okay so now that we've seen a little sampling of our project books um and you say to yourself well i would like to get a project book i'm interested in you know the physics project book i want to see what else is in that book or i'm interested in exploring the outdoors book so how do i get a project book so you can purchase a project book from shop4h.org just like i showed you but your best bet is to contact your local 4-h extension office so it's really easy to find your extension office if you don't and if you have no idea who your extension agent is that's totally fine if you just google your county plus 4-h extension service it'll pop up for you um so for instance if you're in kanawha county i'm your 4-h agent but if you didn't know that you could google cloud county 4-h extension service and it would lead you to the web page and then a place where you can um request information um and i will say that as an extension agent as a 4-h agent if somebody contacted me and said oh my gosh heard about you know i was in this training i heard all about um this kitchen chemistry project book it looks really interesting can would you be able to to help me with this i would love to help you in whatever way i could um there are some counties who um have actual stem program assistance whose their job is to do stem programming um and even with me although i don't have a stem program assistant i would love to help you out in whatever way you would want me to um with your project book and so that takes me to the next slide so how do we use the project book once we have it so you can leave the activities remotely or virtually since not not any of them really require special equipment or materials um you could have each participant complete their own project book so if you had um you know money for curriculum you could actually have you could purchase a book for you know five or the five or six or ten kids in your program and they could all work through the book on their own and do that um you could pick and choose activities and then um you know just do the activities and whatever order you wanted and then do the follow-up questions out of the project book but again let me recommend uh the best way to use your project book is to get your 4-h agent involved you can actually invite your 4-h agent to come lead the activities um and of course when i say come lead the activities that's not something that we can do right now since we're in the middle of the pandemic but as things you know get better and progress um or even virtually um your 4-h agent could set up an after-school 4-h club um they could help you with purchasing materials um they can make sure that every single kid um in your program gets their own project book so um everything is different from county to county right so my 4-h program is not exactly like the program in putnam county or it's not exactly like the program in raleigh county but any 4-h agent would be like super excited to hear from you um if there is um any way that we can help you in using those project books um so if anybody has any specific if you're in a specific county and you're interested and you want to type that in the chat or type that in the q a i can make a note of that and do maybe um a little introduction right we can introduce you um through email to your extension agent if you're not sure who it is um i don't mind doing that at all in fact when i did this for the multi-state conference um i did a presentation that was similar to this um we actually had one of our um uh conference participants connect with um the greenbrier county 4-h agent and they were able to get sort of like um an after school remote 4-h club sort of it's sort of in the works and getting started so that's really awesome um hey jocelyn we had a question about scratch and whether or not scratch is an app can you talk about scratch just a little bit more related to that oh yeah i would love to so scratch um scratch is a website um you can download scratch to be used offline so if you have for instance like tablets or laptops that the kids don't have you know you can't get on the wi-fi or like maybe the wi-fi is not so great you can download um an app onto the computer so that way they can code without the internet um or you can visit the website and you can do it online as well um i will say that scratch works on anything so scratch will work on your phone it will work on any kind of laptop any kind of tablet whether you have an ipad or an android tablet um it's a it's a coding platform so they try to make it as user friendly as possible so that's a really good question anybody else have any questions i'm going to check the q a here let's see let's see harrison county okay so we have i'm just gonna make i'll go through here and make a little list here um so we have harrison county mon county absolutely let's see so does anybody else have any questions i didn't see a ton of different questions in there any questions about project books in general does anybody have any questions about specific um like topics that you're looking for a project book on any questions about 4-h in general how to get in touch with your 4-h agent i've got mon and harrison down jocelyn i'm also going to um type in everybody here the email address for the after school network so the after school network is based within the wvu extension service so um i have like a dual role where i'm an extension agent and also the director of the after school network so i can also help everybody later so if if if you want to connect with jocelyn i encourage you to write down our email address but if you'd like to also kind of connect with her later too um i can help make that happen if um if you've misplaced that or um and we have berkeley county they're added to jocelyn that sounds great you can certainly do that and um the the chat anything that you guys type into the chat will be saved so i can go back and see your name and see what counting you're in and all that good stuff um and um if you would like susan is there a way to make sure that we get everybody a powerpoint or do people need to let me know if they'd like the powerpoint yes um through their registration we have everybody's email address um through the webinar zoom webinar so we can just go back and send an email with that jocelyn and i can share those email addresses with you so you can share your powerpoint okay perfect darlene i see your comment kanawha county send me an email i'll do it i'll do whatever it is that you're interested into and i'll be glad to collaborate with you all right and you don't have to do the exit ticket that's just left over from my um from our multi-state conference um so i have one more slide i just want to make sure that you guys see um if you do when you are sent the powerpoint this last slide here um so this link up here at the top that says resources for stars training january 2021 if you click on that link that will take you to a file that has the four activities that i dropped into the powerpoint and they're pdfs and you can download them um let's see and then of course here's the link to um like wvu uh 4h in general and here's west virginia state university as well just so you know how to get into they also have 4-h agents they do a little bit different programming than us but they they still have a 4-h program i'd like to also chime in and add that first of all i'm so grateful that the bennettum foundation is provided some funding to help host this series of trainings that we're doing and we'll talk a little bit more about that in a minute but also that we have some stem ambassadors through the after school network where we're trying to ramp up some virtual engagement as jocelyn said we're not allowed to be doing face-to-face right now but we do have some college students who are able to engage with your program if if you're interested in that if you have that capability to set up a virtual opportunity i know for example some of our daycare centers have you know their employees that are there working with the kids we have we ask for really simple materials that you would already have on site or would be easily available for you to get um but then our stem ambassadors will join your program virtually and help walk um the kids through doing activities putting them together it's worked really well actually whenever we first started we weren't too sure we just finished a series with the raleigh county or shady springs excuse me library and it's it's worked really well so that's something that certainly that you could get in touch with us about also that's another stem opportunity um jocelyn do you have anything else you want to add nope just just uh you know once again just encouraging everyone you know if you are if you are interested and it seems like you know a project book may be the way to go if you're thinking about you know new curriculum to use and whatever kind of programming that you're doing do not hesitate to reach out to your extension agent or to send me an email and say hey i don't know who my extension agent is in whatever county um and i will make sure that we get that information to you um and i don't want to speak for every single individual who works for extension but everyone that i know would be is thrilled to hear from anybody out there who hasn't haven't been able to make that connection with yet you know people who work with youth so don't hesitate um to send me an email or since using an email um and we'll make sure that we we get you connected so you can use the project books to um their full potential all right um i just shared the qualtrics link in the survey if you're needing west virginia stars hours you definitely want to make sure that you fill that out because we're going to ask for your number in there and you know give us some additional information about what you learned today we would ask everybody to just quickly fill this out even if you don't need stars hours because jocelyn and i are going to use this for future teaching opportunities as well as it's great information for us to share with the bennettum foundation which as we said is helping to host this series of trainings um i also want to mention i think everybody on here probably got the full list of trainings that we're going to be doing um but we for example are going to have another one on thursday morning at 10 called um strategies for behavior promotion and prevention we're going to be um through the series of trainings we've got some literacy trainings we're offering um some math trainings we've heard a lot from people saying oh i'm trying to help kids do math and i don't know what i'm doing so just some general math supports around scaffolding and other opportunities to help engage kids with math and hopefully make things a little bit easier um we're also um and i can't even think we've got a couple more that we haven't even shared yet that we're trying to finish getting lined up but we're really excited to be hosting these um and having them available right now but again you just want to make sure um that you are completing that qualtrics link and i'll go ahead and stick that in there again thank you so much everybody we really appreciate your time today and super grateful to jocelyn for hosting the first of this series um and everybody's patience as we figure out some of the pieces with chad and other information with this technology we're still learning this process as we work our way through the pandemic yes thank you thank you guys very much and i am um again sorry i had to step away with my dog but you know we've all made those adjustments that's what working for from home is all about

The BEST Decision We Made

What do you like best?

We were previously using an all-paper hiring and on-boarding method. We switched all those documents over to Sign Now, and our whole process is so much easier and smoother. We have 7 terminals in 3 states so being all-paper was cumbersome and, frankly, silly. We've removed so much of the burden from our terminal managers so they can do what they do: manage the business.

What do you like best?

I love that I can complete signatures and documents from the phone app in addition to using my desktop. As a busy administrator, this speeds up productivity . I find the interface very easy and clear, a big win for our office. We have improved engagement with our families , and increased dramatically the amount of crucial signatures needed for our program. I have not heard any complaints that the interface is difficult or confusing, instead have heard feedback that it is easy to use. Most importantly is the ability to sign on mobile phone, this has been a game changer for us.

Frequently asked questions

Learn everything you need to know to use airSlate SignNow eSignatures like a pro.

How do you make a document that has an electronic signature?

How do you make this information that was not in a digital format a computer-readable document for the user? " "So the question is not only how can you get to an individual from an individual, but how can you get to an individual with a group of individuals. How do you get from one location and say let's go to this location and say let's go to that location. How do you get from, you know, some of the more traditional forms of information that you are used to seeing in a document or other forms. The ability to do that in a digital medium has been a huge challenge. I think we've done it, but there's some work that we have to do on the security side of that. And of course, there's the question of how do you protect it from being read by people that you're not intending to be able to actually read it? " When asked to describe what he means by a "user-centric" approach to security, Bensley responds that "you're still in a situation where you are still talking about a lot of the security that is done by individuals, but we've done a very good job of making it a user-centric process. You're not going to be able to create a document or something on your own that you can give to an individual. You can't just open and copy over and then give it to somebody else. You still have to do the work of the document being created in the first place and the work of the document being delivered in a secure manner."

How to digitally sign documents with microsoft?

(and also if you can help me find and use the image to put on the blog) I just recently downloaded and got started using Microsofts Office 365 for personal use and while the docs are free, if you really want to make use of this product, the software has a steep (read: not free) price tag. I know that it says you need to upgrade, but what if I can do this on my own, or as a guest (so that I am not going over my limit)? (and not having the upgrade fee is also a big benefit.) Can you please direct me to where to find the docs and how to digitally sign the docs I would like to use?

How to sign a sent pdf?

I just sent a pdf to an employer that they asked to sign, but they don't want to because their software is buggy? (I don't have a problem)
