Who made the decision that the Brits would drive on the left side of the road?
All the world, without exception, quite sensibly ‘kept left’ when riding horse and carriage for three good reasons.—Firstly swordsman, who were mostly right handed, ‘kept left’ so they could ride more safely by bringing defensive arms to bear on those who passed —Secondly, most mount and dismount their horse on the left and this is practically done from the roadside (as opposed to the middle of a road if they kept right). It is also not possible to mount a horse from the right with a sword in scabbard on one’s left side—Thirdly, people ‘keep left’ because Lords, knights, serfs, travellers and tradesmen alike, when dismounted or with beast of burden, led their mule, ox or horse with reins in the stronger right hand leaving their left with the whip (the reversal is not possible without walking backwards).Keeping left is simply natural and customery the world over. Furthermore, evidence suggests the Romans made these prudent customary ways permanent as archeological study of Roman quarries in Britain show the exit lanes (those with heavy load) made deeper grooves in the road than empty waggons arriving. These deeper groovers are on the left side of the road proving that Romans continued the course of sanity and, quite literally, set tradition in stone. However, along strutted Napoleon who, being a ‘small’ man, had an overly inflated sense of self likely emanating from, and to make up for, his shortness of stature*. Or his left–handedness. Or his French revolutionary mandate. But possibly all three. Furthermore, being a creature of La Revolution he had a chip on his shoulder the size of a quarter slice of a camembert round and resented the ‘old order’ as much as its establishment ways. All in the name of liberté — presumably missing the irony of replacing one autocracy with his version of the same.As a result, the troops which he marched and the nations he conquered were forced to ‘keep right’ in ode to his ego. Such was the centrist, authoritarian and autocratic French revolutionary way —throwing the baby out with the bathwater, with slanted political motive, for good or for bad.“It was the despotic and, importantly, left–handed Napoleon and his obsession with absolute power in the minutest of details which drove France to turn the established norm and everything that is logical on its head”Ed Wright, A Left Handed History of the WorldSuch autocratic knee-jerk reaction and pea-cock posturing pontification is not the British liberal way —the English have been in perpetual change, gradually honing their customs with calm compromise, consensus, reason and polite cups of tea, since Magna Carta (1215) and Wat Tyler’s Peasants Revolt (1381) — when these liberal attitudes and decentralised ways were first committed to perpetuity by the people. Some 500 years ahead of the guillotine. Evolution being all superior to revolution since it involves sensibility’s deliberate checks of moderation, consensus and compromise.Furthermore, at 2.9 deaths per 1,000 Britain has some of the safest roads on Europe. And this may be due to the British using their stronger, more experienced and more co–ordinated arm to steer and hold road position. Whilst in Britain the weaker arm is trusted only with the menial task of changing gear, on the continent it is used perhaps most competently for causing crashes. It may sound righteously imperious but it’s unlikely Britain will change for the ways of a despot from the continent — a national point of principle which has put a wry smile on the face of the British for centuries. For all these reasons the British, and all those Britain influenced during history (some 2 billion drivers in India, Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand and many other Commonwealth countries — see full list below), still ‘keep left’ as the world ever did for millenia. In the meantime, the British politely and patiently wait for the world to revert to its senses and to start driving correctly and safely. This can of course be achieved by all those currently driving on the right to universally return to the left. Indeed, it is quite possible for this to be:Dagen H (‘H day’), less succinctly called ‘Högertrafikomläggningen’ (‘the–right–hand–day–of–traffic—for–diversion’), was the occasion, 3 September 1967, on which all traffic in Sweden switched from driving on the left-hand side of the road to the madness of the right. Perhaps no less could be expected from those who daisy–chain paragraphs to form nouns from their vocabulary vacuum. Perhaps the thought of being Napoleon’s lackey did not bother them either. Here follows a list of those nations not living under the hegemony and legacy of a little megalomaniac. The list is best scrolled whilst seated and contently humming ‘God Save the Queen’ (although protocol dictates one should of course stand to sing the same — but that might be melodramatic). Mugabe was a berk. All the while, Britain is quite happy for those choosing Napoleon’s chip–over–logic to continue to drive as they do. However, if it is a return to universal driving protocol they seek, they must bin their shackles and return to the side of the free and to that which is logical, polite and customary. The other option, for Britain to adopt the posturing of a bossy little man quite so intent on sticking two fingers* up to all who went before him, is simply inconceivable — the truly great acknowledge the giants’ shoulders upon which they stand. The French lop their heads off.Högertrafikomläggningen awaits the free. Vive la diference, vive la liberté.*This is of course wild exaggeration — Napoleon stuck only one finger to the establishment because he was a continental. The two fingered ‘V sign’ (roughly translating as ‘F..k off’) is a priveledge reserved for the English (and the Welsh who have equal rights to its official usage). The two–fingered V sign (with palm facing face) is a gesticulation first coined in 1346 by Welsh and English longbow-men at the battles of Crecy and Agincourt where the French would cut off the two bowstring-drawing fingers of captured archers to render them useless in battle. The English and Welsh in turn taunted the French by flaunting their two fingers before battle commenced** and the ‘V sign’ was born. It is a gesticulation of obstinacy, an exclamation expressing contemptuous defiance, is peculiarly English and, like left–hand driving, we would not swap it for the world. On occasion, when in France, we like to proudly show our two fingers (using the left hand) whilst our right hands safely hold road position. Anything other would be madness.*There has been complaint my description of Napoleon’s ‘shortness of stature’ is offensive to short people. This it is not meant to be. The term ‘shortness of stature’ (or ‘standing’) is a popular English euphemism for a person’s lack of qualification to the position in question which, in this case, is Emperor of Europe. The last time I enquired, the required study subject for Emporer of Europe (‘How to subjugate the masses, put dissenters to the sword and conquer all of the continent by marching armies across it’) was unavailable at English universities. Although, I concede, such a subject may well be popular on the abroad* (*see Hitler, The Kaiser, Franco, Mussolini, Stalin, Khrushchev, Ceaușescu et al)As with Napoleon being ‘short’, it for this same reason Churchill refered to the Führer of the Third Reich as ‘Corporal’ Hitler (Corporal is the very low rank to which Hitler rose in WWI) — it is by no stretch of the imagination meant to be offensive to corporals, simply a succinct British illustration of under-qualification or ‘shortness of stature’. A comment concerning standing rather than posture.Ironically, Napoleon was niether short nor French. He was a 5 foot 6 Corsican which is about average height for the time and it was British propaganda which described him otherwise. Although he is possibly the greatest military leader the world has seen, it is the prerogative of the free to mock those who goose-step their way to hegemony. In England, this leaves room for a lot of mocking.** ‘The English and Welsh in turn taunted the French by flaunting their two fingers before battle commenced’ — Although there is no written evidence the two fingered gesticulation occured at Agincourt, the event is firmly established British folk-law. If the event is simply a good yarn passed through the generations it is, if nothing else, solid anthropological evidence of an obstinate British will never to fold in the face of foreign tyranny.

How do people make so much money on the ClickBank?
There’s a lot of misconceptions out there today, but after working online for the last few years…I can assure you, affiliate marketing has to be the most misunderstood subject there is.And don’t take that the wrong way either, I’m certainly not judging - as I went through the same thing myself…Where I started looking at all the ways I could make money online a few years back, and after coming across a blog post where this guru was bragging about how he made $1,000,000 from blogging…I couldn’t help but fall in love right away.Honestly hard not to, as they made it look so easy…Where all I had to do was write a few blog posts, optimize my SEO - share it on social media…And voila, I was a millionaire.Needless to say, I went all in after seeing this…And after writing a crazy amount of blogs, and posting even more useless stuff on Twitter…I finally checked my account 5 months later, and there it was…$17.That’s right, after working countless hours for 5 months straight - I’d made a whopping $17…And that was obviously depressing, but I wasn’t quite ready to give up yet - so after that…I ventured out and started looking around for a solution that’d help me fix this mess.Searched high and low, downloading every ebook I could find…Then finally, after doing this for a couple weeks - I came in contact with a guy who appeared to know what he was doing.Won’t bore you with the entire story now, as it’s not too important…But needless to say, after telling him about my troubles - and mentioning how I thought this whole affiliate marketing thing was going to be a little easier…He just laughed and mentioned something I’ll never forget:Yeah, because there’s one important concept nobody likes to talk about…No matter what you’re selling, whether it be an affiliate product or a $7 ebook…You always have to gain the trust of your reader before they’ll buy anything. In other words, nobody just sees some random tweet and buys an affiliate product because a stranger told them to…Or better yet, reads one blog post that’s clearly intended to make money...And that’s the same reason why it takes people months (if not years) before they make money off this. The reason for that is because they take the time to build up an audience, which is usually done with multiple blog posts…And that worked great back in the day, when SEO was new and everybody had a chance to claim their spot…But in today’s world, everybody and their dog is fighting for a higher ranking - meaning it not only takes longer to get one article on the front page, but takes years to get multiple articles on there…Which is what you really need to have enough traffic and build an audience.Anyway, after hearing this - I was pretty crushed…As I started to realize this might not be quite as easy as it seemed, but like a true mind reader…The guy told me not to worry after that, and mentioned how there’s actually a way to “hack” this process…It just takes a little more skill up front.Of course, I was all ears at this point…And after hearing him talk about everything for the next 30 minutes, I knew exactly what I needed to do next…Start creating marketing funnelsNow if you’re not familiar with this term already, it’s an overused concept where all these “digital marketers” have made it more complicated than it needs to be…But in the simplest terms, it’s really an automated system where you guide the reader through a journey - having multiple “conversations” with them along the way…Then at the end of the funnel, THAT’s when you offer your affiliate product. This works great for a lot of different reasons, like how you’re breaking down obstacles they have in regards to the end product - while also educating them along the way…But also because it gives you enough time to build trust with the reader (using automation). In other words, instead of being a random weirdo who’s posting on social media - thinking people are going to see your tweet and buy a product right away…You establish a relationship with them first, show how it can help them - THEN offer the product…And the entire process depends on how expensive your end product is, but on average - these funnels take around 5-7 days (for cold traffic, as you just send them to this system - then let it take care of the rest)...Which is a much better alternative to the 12 - 18 months everybody shoots for now.Needless to say, after learning about this concept - I went out and started purchasing expensive courses after that…And I’m not saying it happened on the first day, or the second day - or hell, the first month…But finally, after a lot of testing - and even more learning…I was able to start creating funnels that actually worked:And here’s the exact steps I used to do just that.Step #1 - Start with a product (or topic) you actually enjoyOne of the biggest problems I see with most affiliate marketers today, is how they chase the money…Not something they actually enjoy talking about.Don’t get me wrong either, I completely get it - as the main point of affiliate marketing is to make money…But here’s the thing, if you’re trying to sell something you don’t like - you’ll get burnt out right away…And with all the opportunity on ClickBank today, it’s really hard to NOT find a product that pays well - and you actually enjoy. At a bare minimum, I always tell people to pick a tool (or software) they’ve used before…But if none come to mind, then at least pick a topic you enjoy talking about. To give you an example of this, one of my favorite topics to talk about…Is copywriting, so if I didn’t have any tools that came to mind right away…I’d head over to Best Affiliate Programs | Top Premier Internet Retailer | Clickbank, and search for anything copywriting related. After doing this for a little while, I’d eventually come across a course from some copywriter who I actually like - so after that…I’d pick his product:And move onto the next step:Step #2 - Targeting the right audienceNow, over the years I’ve seen a lot of mistakes when it comes to digital marketing in general - especially affiliate marketing…But if there’s one common mistake that kills most dreams, it’s just not picking the right audience. This is dangerous for a lot of reasons, but the most obvious is well - if you don’t offer your product to the right person…Then they’re probably not going to buy it (be like selling tampons to young dudes). With that said, there’s always going to be multiple markets you can help as well - so the key here is just picking one and going with it…Which, going back to our current example…I’d pick a market of people who want to start making money online, but don’t know where to start.Like this market (for that product), as copywriting is really one skill that’ll help them succeed online…So that’d be the best place to start, then after we have that picked - it’s time to move onto:Step #3 - Build a system that turns cold traffic into hot leadsAlright, so as I’ve mentioned a few times - there’s a few major problems that prevent people from getting sales online…But one thing that’s always blown my mind, is how people think that just because customers are online - they don’t know how to think anymore. In other words, whenever we do “sales” offline - most people understand how important it is to show the benefits of your product to potential clients, and explain what it can do for them before ever making an offer…But then for some reason, once people go online - they think they can just build a landing page, put a “call-to-action” after that…And expect people to buy right away, which simply doesn’t work.Again, there’s a few reasons for this - but in the simplest terms, it’s usually because they just don’t understand what it is…So before you ever offer the sale, you always want to build an automated system that explains the benefits to your market - along with why they should buy the product you’re affiliated with.Going back to our current example…I’d know my market well enough to understand they probably don’t even know what copywriting is, so if I just told them to buy this affiliate product - they’d look at me like I’m an idiot…So to get around this mess, it’s my job to “meet them where they’re at”.In other words, since I know what their goal is (make money online) - it’s my job to show them how this skill can help them signNow that goal…And there’s a lot of different ways I can do this, but for the most part…I’ve always been a fan of email courses. These seem to work best as it’s information that’s dripped out over 5 days, so you’re not overwhelming them with everything at once…Then on top of this, it’s something they can read whenever they have time - so the “attendance” rates are usually a lot higher than every other method as well:Anyway, in this case I’d create an email course with the main logic of:“The one skill that’ll help you make money online”And there’s a lot of underlying psychology that goes on with email funnels, so it’s a little tougher than just writing 5 emails…But in the simplest terms, if you can give them an email course that explains how copywriting can help them signNow their goals…Then you will get some sales with that alone.Anyway, now that we have this in place - it’s time to move onto:Step #4 - Craft a landing page that converts like crazySo now that we have the email funnel created, it’s obviously important to have people enter that funnel…And the easiest way to do this, is with a high-converting landing page.I’ve tested a lot of different options over the years, from pop-ups to having a freebie on my homepage…And I can assure you, landing pages are hands down - the best way to go.The reason for this is because they only have one option when seeing a landing page, so that alone skyrockets conversions…But on top of this, it gives you a little more time to write “copy” that converts - so that’s extremely helpful as well. With that said, as with everything…There’s a lot of advanced tactics you could use, but if you want to see one of my landing pages that’s converting very well - then here you go:Alright, now that we have the email funnel in place - and a landing page that has people enter that email funnel…It’s time to move onto the last step:Step #5 - Driving traffic to that landing pageSo entrepreneurs are a different breed, and definitely come in different forms…But if there’s one common problem they all have, it’s always getting traffic. From SEO to posting on Pinterest, this is the one thing they all struggle with…And again, I went through this in the beginning stages of my journey as well - so I’m not poking fun…But over the years I’ve learned it’s really not that hard, you just have to understand how to meet your potential clients. There’s a lot of ways you can do this, including anything along the lines of:Facebook AdsTwitter AdsEtc…But for me personally, over the years - I’ve noticed it works best when I write a long-form blog…Then “boost” it in front of my audience. This works best as it starts the relationship off on the right foot, and as with everything - there’s a few ways to do this…But from my experience, it usually works best when you do this here on Quora - then “promote” your answer in front of the right audience. This works great as people on Quora are clearly there to read questions, so they want to see your answer (if it’s good)...And as with everything else - the pricing will vary by industry…But at the end of the day, this method is pretty cost-efficient all around…And to give you some context on this, here’s a recent campaign I ran:The only thing you want to remember with this, is that it needs to be something that leads people to your funnel, and you always need to have a call-to-action at the end (like this):So going back to our example, in this case - I’d go to Quora…Find any question that was something along the lines of:“How do I make money online?”Then after answering that question, at the end - I’d leave a call-to-action that says something along the lines of:“Want to learn one skill that’ll help you achieve this goal? If so, then click here to learn more”...And after that, the link would go to the landing page - so they could learn more about copywriting (if they wanted to) after that, and the rest of the process would take care of everything from there (on autopilot).Long story short…I’m sure we could really dig into the details if we wanted to, but after working in this industry for the last few years…If there’s one “secret” that separates people who make money on Clickbank, from those that don’t…It’s the concept of marketing funnels. The reason for this is because if you don’t have marketing funnels in place, then it’s impossible to establish a rapport with the reader - well, unless you get millions of visitors on your blog every month…But that takes too long, so not something I’d advise. On the other hand, when you put a system in place that guides the reader through a journey - and builds a rapport the entire time…THAT’s when the sales really start rolling in.At the end of the day, I guess it’s really like making a robotic version of yourself - where you put the sales process in place once, then let it work for you 24/7 after that…So if you can put it in that perspective, usually makes things a little easier.

Do soldiers who survived enemy human wave attacks (e.g., veterans of the Korean War) suffer from any major psychological illness
I was involved in just such a human wave assault while serving with the 5th Special Forces in Vietnam. I was as an E-4 in command of our 43rd Company of Cambodians along with one other USSF SGT Greg Skougland. This particular night we were in our RON (Rest Over Night) position in a square perimeter with a M-60 machine gun at each corner. Greg and I were playing cards by candlelight when one of our OP/LP (Observation Post/Listening Post) fired a six round burst. The OP?LP are sent out approximately 100 meters from a position along the likely avenue of approach by the enemy. If it hadn’t been for the correct location and alertness of the two Cambodians on the OP/LP the NVA would have overrun and whipped us out.Immediately Greg put the candle out with his palm and with a smile sent me to one side of the perimeter while he went to the opposite side in case it was a diversion with the main assault coming from the other side of the perimeter. When I arrived I observed that every position was up and firing. The M-60 machine gunner is trained to fire a burst of three pause and continue with three round burst. He had the trigger held back and sent out a continuous rate of fire. Once I ascertained the location of the main body of the NVA force I called our TOC (Tactical Operation Center) for fire support. B-43 had four 105’s. I gave the TRP’s (Target Referance Points) but instead of numbers such as, TRP 00002, TRP 00004 we used objects which was quicker and left no chance of a mistake. Before leaving for our 30 day combat operation I marked all of the objects on my map. I called the following, “fire mission, TRP rock, house, car, tree, fire for effect, danger close, I will adjust!” Within a few minutes artillery rounds started landing. We had a 60mm mortar in the center of the perimeter of which I requested illumination over the area using our HT-1 squad radio. The entire area was illuminated with long lasting parachute flares. The artillery blunted the human wave assault and it simply became a static firefight. Then I received a call from the Shadow. “No one knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men, the Shadow do; give me a grid square, sit back, your battle is over.” I inquired, “who the fuck are you?” He came back “Air Force gunship just happen to be in the area and saw the battle, now give me a grid square.” I estimated the location of the main body of NVA troops relaid the grid square and within a few minutes a whip of red started dancing across the grid square. Every third round was a tracer but the rounds were coming so fast it looked like a continuous red whip giving off a sound like someone throwing up. It was at that moment, just for a second, I felt sorry for the little bastards. I got over the feeling quickly. What remains of the NVA force ran away. The whole time I was expecting the main force to switch to Plan B because Plan A wasn’t working; every mission conducted by the Green Berets will have at least three COA’s (Courses of Action); apparently on this night the NVA didn’t have a COA B.we suffered one WIA. A Cambodian soldier from another OP/LP was hit while returning to the perimeter. Greg ran past me underfire without a weapon, his interpreter stopped next to me. I shouted, “where the fuck is Greg going?” His interpreter shouted, “OP wounded…..Greg go get!” Now I’m the only American left and I was now afraid for Greg’s safe return. I told the interpreter that I needed seven men to form a protective line of fire to draw attention away from Greg’s return trip. Soon the seven Cambodians were with me and I gave the hand signal to follow me in a single file. I went beyond the perimeter stopping approximately 20 meters turned and started firing with the seven Bodes doing likewise. Through the light of a parachute flare I watched as Greg returned using the fireman’s carry. Once he was back inside the perimeter I rolled the seven Bodes back to the perimeter. The firing stopped and with a full load of adrenaline I called the TOC to announce that the contact was over and that we were going to pursue the fleeing NVA. Major Bridgewater came back with, “negative, sweep the area at first light.OK, how did I feel. Relief and a sense of satisfaction that one we didn’t lose any men, I had performed as I was trained to do, the NVA were stopped and driven away. I still have the same feeling now while writing this story. We swept the area and counted 32 dark spots on the gray ground with the closest large spot only 32 paces from the perimeter. Somehow during the night the NVA returned quietly to retrieve their dead. We estimated that the NVA Battalion was no longer combat effective due to the number of dark spots on the ground where the main body of NVA were decimated we stopped counting at 100 satisfied that we had put the battalion out of business and were sure the NVA commander if he survived had a lot of explaining to do having been beaten by a company of 112 Cambodians. This photo shows how young I looked when I signed into the B-40 in the rear awaiting an assignment to one of the five A-Teams under the control of B-40.Our Mobile Strike Force patch.one of the interpretersThis is Pretty Boy who was a member of my 43rd Company and made it to the states and lives in Texas. We used nicknames because I couldn’t pronounce their Cambodian names. There was Pretty Boy, because he was very handsome and was always combing his hair. Whiskey, he was always drinking a Vietnamese whisky but was always ready to fight. Another one I called Cowboy due to his bowed legs caused by Rickets when he was a child. This is goofy Greg Skougland the team medic (18D using the new branch designation)My photo taken the morning after the battle. You can see the effect of combat on ones face when compared to my photo above.43rd Infantry Company with 112 Cambodians. As good as if not better than a US Infantry company; these guys have been fighting this war for at least five years and were very brave. It was an honor to serve with them.Another photo of Pretty Boy standing in front of his certificates presented to him for his service with Special Forces.A granny photo of Pretty Boy back in the day. This is the certificate presented for my conduct during the battle. You’ll notice the date 1997. During the battle our Team Commander Captain XXXXXXXXXwas spending a few days with us while we were out on our 30 day mission. During the battle he hid the entire time and came out of a foxhole after we told him that the battle was over. He took the award paperwork and changed my name with his and he received the award October 1970. When I was able to get in touch with Major Bridgewater to discuss life he asked me if I’d received the award? I informed him that the Captain changed the name to his and he received the award. He went ballistic and resubmitted the paperwork through Senator Kohl’s office because I was at Ft McCoy, WI. The award was approved and was awarded during my graduation from the Senior NCO Battle Staff Course.

How was your recent IIM interview experience (2017-19)?
WARNING: Long answerCommon Admission Process - 9 IIMs, 2017Date: 20 Feb 2017Time: 8:30 AMVenue: IIM Trichy, Chennai CentreBackground: Chemical Engineer from BITS. 2.5 years work ex in Pharmaceutical Manufacturing. CAT percentile - 98 | 10/12/Grad - 89/ 89/ 71First day, first slot of Common Admission Process of 9 IIMs. So, I didn’t have any pre-conceived notions about interviewers/ panel/ process etc. Later it turned out, I was the first candidate in my panel too.signNowed the centre at 8:00 AM. We were directed to sit in a classroom which was the waiting room for candidates. The centre was very neat and clean, with huge classrooms, which were well-lighted and carpeted. Also, it was my first visit to an IIM classroom. Infra - Thumbs up! (Not much to worry on this front if you are joining a new IIM, since by now most IIMs have their infra up and running. After a little wait, an administrative officer directed us to move to another room for WAT.We were asked to take out our interview form (previously submitted online) and submit it. An attendance sheet was passed for signature and candidates were asked to note their panel numbers and sequence and denote the panel number on the top right corner of the form. On checking, I saw that I was first in my panel. First day, First slot, First candidate! What are the chances?I was little relieved as being the first candidate is always good - No prior benchmarks for the panel ;-) and my process would be over quick and I could go to office (Had already taken 2 leaves in the previous week for IIFT and SPJIMR interviews ) :-DWATWAT evaluation sheets were passed and WAT Topic was announced. We were given 15 minutes to gather our thoughts and write. The topic for our slot was - The Delhi high court judgement on copyright infringement controversy between publishing companies and the photocopy shop in a certain university. The topic was careful not to mention names of any stakeholders, however I remembered this case distinctly - I read Hindu every single day from May 2016 till the date of interview. I wrote my WAT from a stakeholder analysis point of view but fell short of time towards the end and concluded concisely. This could have been better, had I managed my time better. During submission I glanced at the sheets of other candidates and people had filled both side of the sheets completely. I wrote a page and a half keeping the word limit in mind. I quickly counted words in a random line and the number of lines - it came out to be 290 words (limit was 300). I felt I did above average in this round. Then we were told that snacks and tea are arranged and candidates can refresh and get ready for the next round - PI. I had tea and couple of biscuits and met some people I knew from previous interviews. We discussed the Infosys CXOs wages controversy as we were expecting questions over it in PI. (You will meet many people again and again in different interviews, because people have similar calls at similar marks) We returned back to the waiting room and I was waiting for my name to be called.PIMy name was called and I kept my phone in my bag (we were told that phones cannot be carried inside interview room even in switched off condition) and took out my file and went in.I entered the room and there were 3 panelists.Left - Lady, probably in her early 30s (Mostly a prof.) (L)Centre - Gentleman, mid-30s (Prof or Alumni) (C)Right - Gentleman, late 40s or 50s (Senior Prof) (R)The room arrangement was as below.I entered and wished the panel Good Morning and stood next to the chair.L - Please have a seat.Me - Thank you, ma’am.C - How are you Nikhil?Me - Nerves took over … Trying to get the words out ….. (I stammer when I get nervous)C - I asked how are you Nikhil.Me - Finally the words come out …. I’m good sir, a little nervous to be honest. (With a smile throughout)All interviewers smiled too. (As they say a smile goes long way and it never hurts to smile; and the first 30 seconds are very important to set the course of the interview)Also, hint:- A very cordial panel. (Yay!)L - Are you a resident of Chennai?Me - Ma’am, I have been working here for the past 2.5 years. I’m a permanent resident of Uttar Pradesh.L - Okay.C was going through my form when I was entering the room.C - Nikhil, your graduation marks paint a very interesting picture. What happened in the first two years? ( My yearly GPAs are 6, 6.55, 7.89 and 8.15)Me - (I was expecting this question and had tried to come up with all sorts of excuses during my preparation, but was never convinced myself)… Sir, I come from a family where all the emphasis was laid on academics and I never really had a chance to explore any other arena such as sports, extra-curricular etc. After I came to college I had this new found freedom. I got into sports, club activities etc. Honestly, I missed some classes too. Soon I realised that this is not the reason I am here and my core chemical engineering courses are pending so not much is lost. I started to focus on academics and improved a lot. At a point, I was top 5 in some chemical courses in my class.Contd. .. They were listening patiently … Sir, it’s a mistake I regret till date but I learnt the hard way and will never repeat it in my life. BITS has zero attendance system and trusts students to make their decisions. I’m glad that I learnt this lesson on my own rather than a college rule of minimum attendance.L - But the 9 IIMs you are interviewing for, all have rules for attendance. How will you manage?Me - Ma’am, I prepared for JEE in 11th and 12th standards with normal schooling. I used to attend a full day of school, then go for 4 hours of coaching classes on alternate days, study till 1 or 2 am and then attend school at 7 in the morning each day. If I join any of the new IIMs, I will definitely be able to put that amount of effort again.L looked convinced because she did not question back.C - Looking in to the form… So, you are working in a Pharmaceutical company?Me - Yes, sir.C - What do you do in your role?Me - I told my portfolios and what I do on a day-to-day basis.C - So, you said statistical process control. Are you six sigma trained?Me - No sir.R - (All the while he was quiet and observing me. I made eye contact with him once or twice till then.) What is a process?Me - Gave a crude definition … in terms of input (material, conditions, people, energy) and output (product, different form of energy, service)R - What is statistical process control?Me - I had prepared this … I explained in lay man terms.R - Okay. What kind of tools do you use in Statistical Process Control?Me - I told statistical tools with some examples and their use.C - Explain control charts.Me - I gave examples of p, np charts and their use in the parameters monitored.C - What other type of charts are there?Me - Sir, we use only these two charts so far as the project is still in implementation phase. Based on my research I know of R-chart as well but have never used it.C - Explain R-chart.Me - Sorry sir, I don’t know.C - If you don’t know then do you think you will be able to implement this project?Me - Sir, my role in the project is similar to that of a project manager. I’ll put together a team of experts from each departments such as Production, Quality Assurance, Engineering, Quality Control etc. This team will also include personnel from Operational Excellence who are statisticians and more well versed with statistics.C - But don’t you think you should know? (contd from previous question)Me - Sir, I completely agree with you. I’ll learn more and more as we go deeper in this project.C -Okay. Do these people report to you?Me - No sir, these are people with 10–15 years of experience. I am too junior to have them report to me.C - Okay. What is the one challenge which you face while working in such a team?Me - I was not expecting a behavioural question at this point … thought for 5 seconds .. Sir, the people I work with do not report to me and are senior to me. It is a challenge to extract work out of individuals who do not report to me. It is very important to understand their behaviours and working styles and mould myself according to that to accomplish the task at hand.C - Okay, good.L - Tell us more about the program you have undergone? (I was part of a rotational training program at my organisation)Me - Explained the program structure… rotations to different functions.. how it helped me gain maximum exposure in a short period.L - Nikhil, your work seems interesting. You underwent a program similar to young leaders program at other organisations. Why leave now? (In short - Why MBA?)Me - Ma’am, everything indeed has been great, however my exposure is limited to pharmaceutical manufacturing and is very technical in nature. I am seldom able to relate my work directly to the bigger picture. I believe an MBA will give equip me with the right business skills and I’ll be able to approach my work with a more holistic view. Also, after my MBA I wish to take up a larger role in this field in order to have more impact.L - Okay.L - What has been your biggest failure in life?Me - Told about how I am blessed with a stammering problem and was rejected in the SSB for NDA - Indian Air Force, Flying entry, which was my dream job. I think I got a little teary eyed here.R - Jumps in with academic related questions as soon as I finish, maybe to throw me off. So Nikhil, what is a function?Me - I answered in terms of input and output.R - What is a set?Me - Startled … Managed to say - Sir, set is a collection of elements, which may or may not have a relationship with each other. (I was startled not only because I never expected a basic question but also because I did not remember the exact definition for such a “basic question”.)R - Okay. Then define a function in terms of sets.Me - I talked about, domain, co-domain and range and cited an example of how these work in a function using square root function.L - Nikhil, what are the two learnings out of your 2.5 years of career so far?Me - Talked about how working closely with senior leaders in the organisation has helped me develop my skills and humility from experts who have a lot of experience and yet, are so humble and always mentor me - being new.L - Okay. What about your extra-curricular activities? What did you do in school and college?Me - Told about my extra curricular activities.L - So you took part in any competitions, won anything?Me - Yes, ma’am … I tried to show the certificates…L - Just tell us in brief.Me - Told.R - You also mentioned that you were the school captain (head boy). What were your responsibilities as the school captain? What challenges you faced?Me - I told the responsibilities of a head boy - commanding morning assembly, ensuring conduction of morning assembly - just check if the students who were presenting matters were ready or not.R - In your answer you used a word “just”. When you say “just” it does not mean it’s a challenge. Did you face any real challenge?Me - (I was cursing myself for using the word) Okay sir …. thought a bit …. Sir, on annual school day and sports day it was my responsibility to lead the parade. The parade had students from every grade from 12th to 1st. It was very challenging to get the 6–7 year old kids to understand the march rhythm so that the parade presentation would look good.R looked satisfied…..You will have some good days and some bad days during your MBA interviews and during your good days you will be able to recollect everything and come up with answers on the spot. On bad days, you won’t and you’ll come out of the interview room kicking yourself. This supposedly was a good day and my mind was working. I have had bad days too but that’s an answer to a different question.C - Okay Nikhil, last question. Suppose if you get admission into an MBA course and your company is offering you the role of Executive Assistant to CEO. Which will you choose and why?Me - Never expected this question … Sir, Executive Assistant roles are of two types. One which is purely administrative and I don’t see myself in that role. The second role is more involving and the Executive Assistant would help the CEO in devising the firm’s strategy and managing a part of his work for him. This role would definitely help me get a good overview of the business and I would be networking with the leaders of the organisation but an MBA would equip me with the right skills and knowledge which will be more beneficial in the long run.C - Smiling … Okay, thank you Nikhil. We are done. Please tell XX (next candidate) to enter after 5 mins.Me - Okay. Thank you sir.Put the chair back in place .. left the room…PI lasted 30–35 minutes at least.Verdict: Result awaited. This was the best panel so far, which seemed interested and posed question from all angles (work, academics, behaviour). I believe this is the difference between and IIMs and other institutes. Not that others aren’t good, SPJIMR, IIFT too had good panels and a very good process. But this is one thing which is not under your control. The panel you have is what you get. Needless to say, go in with all your skills and knowledge. Also, this was my best interview performance amongst all the 6 I have given so far. Whether I convert this call or not - is for later. But I was happy that I fared well and could answer most of the questions.Presence of mind, preparation and a warm smile will go a long way in your interview. Be attentive, take cues from tone of question asked, expressions of the interviewer and answer honestly. You will sail through. As for me, I will update the answer with the Verdict.EDIT (26 May 2017)Converted 8 out of 9 new IIMs and waitlisted at IIM Trichy in the first list.

Complementary and Alternative Medicine: Is d-mannose effective in addressing Urinary Tract Infection? What are the side effects
Interestingly, there really isn't much information available regarding D-mannose (more specifically, the alpha variant), so this question is somewhat hard to address. First, let's look at its potential treatment in a UTI. According to what I've found, any form of mannose is thought to inhibit bacteria, which cause UTIs, from sticking to urethra[1,2]. To me this suggests that bacteria such as E. Coli (cited as the most common cause [3]) need glucose and/or a downstream product of glucose metabolism to create a glycosidic linkage between the bacteria and the lumen of the urethra; the bacteria doesn't simply sit, it has to create bridges so that it can stick and possibly move. Using this inference, it seems that excretion of excess d-mannose through urine would line the walls of the urethra with both glucose and mannose. This is a problem for E. Coli and other bacteria because, as previously indicated, they need glucose to stick to the urethra. Since E. Coli is a gram-negative bacteria [4], it displays sugars on its cell wall. This suggests that the sugars projected off the bacteria complex neatly with glucose, but not mannose. However, as your body doesn't use mannose for much of anything (it's not useful in cellular metabolism), there will still be a lot of glucose lining the walls of the urethra regardless of how much mannose you ingest. This leads me to believe that while d-mannose may be a relatively safe approach, it likely isn't very effective. As for d-mannose and its side effects, all signs point to it being relatively innocuous to a healthy person [2]. This should hold true for children as well, as the main side effect seems to be a disruption of standard cellular metabolism, causing an increase of blood fructose (mannose must be converted into fructose before being used in metabolism). There is no reason for this to be different in children than adults - the processes needed for cellular metabolism are started up before birth. Increased blood fructose would cause an increase in blood insulin levels in order to draw the fructose out of the blood. For diabetics, this is equivalent to having high blood sugar; it's not a huge deal, but the body uses more energy to store fructose than glucose, so the insulin is not as effective. Below is a somewhat complex image of fructose and mannose metabolism [5]. It's not necessary for you to know the pathway, just notice that the body doesn't use mannose for much. Also, notice that mannose needs to be converted to fructose before being metabolized into glyceraldehyde-3P; G3P, which is a key substrate in aerobic respiration. D-mannose is present near the mid-upper-left section of the graph. Follow it from there to the bottom right - G3P. If you took every Star Trek captain (with their respective ships) and pitted them against each other in an all out war who would
Here is a list of the captains and the ships:Kirk and the Enterprise (Constitution Class)Picard and the Enterprise D (Galaxy Class)Sisko and the Defiant (Defiant Class)Janeway and the Voyager (Intrepid Class)Archer and the Enterprise NX-01 (NX Class)Lorca and the Discovery (Crossfield Class)OK let’s make a few eliminations right off of the bat: Kirk, Lorca, and Archer. Why these people? Because no matter how smartly they maneuver, and even though Lorca’s ship can make jumps at infinite velocity, they will never be able to match the technology of the Enterprise D, the Defiant, and Voyager. Now I am going to make a decision: Janeway is using the standard version of Voyager, not the version with future technology such as ablative armor.Another elimination follows: Janeway. The Defiant is a military warship with an experienced military commander in Sisko, and the Enterprise D has similar tech to Voyager, is much larger, and Picard is one of Starfleet’s finest captains. Voyager is at least matched by the crews of the Enterprise D and Defiant and bested with technology. The final two are Picard and Sisko. The USS Enterprise D is Starfleet’s flagship and thus one of the most advanced ships in the Federation. The Defiant is a warship built in a hurry; it carries the most advanced weaponry in the fleet as well as a host of small flaws. The two ships have about equal battle potential as the Defiant is both the most powerful offensively and the most volatile defensively, whereas the Enterprise may not carry as powerful weaponry but is designed solidly and is definitely the better defensive vessel. The crews are where the difference lies:The tactical officers are very similar, in fact they are the same person, Lieutenant Worf, therefor a difference cannot be determined here. The captains are both experienced tactical masterminds, Sisko with experience against the Dominion, Klingons, and Cardassians, and Picard against the Borg, Cardassians, Romulans, and a host of other encounters. Picard is more measured and reasonable, a distinct advantage, but Sisko is more likely to take the determining risk, another advantage. From a military perspective, the captains are about equal. The true advantage for the Enterprise comes in the first officer and helmsman: Riker and Data. Data has faster reactions, makes quicker decisions, and purely out computes Dax at the helm, whereas Riker is another experienced ship-to-ship combatant whereas Kira was a guerrilla resistance specialist, giving Riker the advantage in this scenario. My final elimination is Sisko, and thus…The USS Enterprise D with Picard would win.The Enterprise D has advanced weaponry, a sturdy design, and an exceptional crew, making it my favorite to prosper in this hypothetical battle.
