welcome to God's pantry Food Bank we're so happy you're here in this orientation you will be learning about hunger in Kentucky the shift program and how to shift the conversation about hunger there let's first discuss lesson 1 God's pantry Food Bank and hunger in Kentucky in 1955 one woman and her station wagon changed history mem hunt felt and saw hunger in Kentucky and was determined to do her part in remedying it she began a mobile food pantry from her car accepting food donations to distribute to the hungry the first pantry opened in 1959 since then the Food Bank has evolved into serving 50 counties across Central and Eastern Kentucky mem Hunt's life was devoted to serving and helping others and we honor her legacy by continuing her work through God's pantry Food Bank United through the mission to solve hunger in Kentucky one in six adults lack food access along with one in five children being food insecure that amounts to over two hundred fifty three thousand four hundred people in our service area who are facing hunger God's pantry Food Bank works to reduce hunger in Kentucky their community cooperation making the best possible use of all available resources including volunteers just like you God's pantry Food Bank like other food banks is a nonprofit organization that collects and distributes food to relief organizations that will then distribute it to people directly a food pantry God's pantry Food Bank is also a member of feeding America among with six other food banks in Kentucky which are all partnered together in order to serve the state effectively and efficiently a new program called meal Connect real time is currently being piloted this is what you are here for through meal Connect real time food banks are able to collect donations from restaurants grocery stores market and they're food sources volunteers can accept a donation pick it up in their own vehicle and drop it off at the food pantry this system is still being changed and updated but is a promising initiative and donations for food banks with the evolution of this system God's pantry Food Bank is receiving more donated food than ever and community members like you are becoming more involved in fighting hunger throughout your participation in this program volunteer coordinator Renee Rigdon will be the person you work most closely with and your point of reference for any questions you may have now let's move on to the shift program and your role in it the shift program is a revolutionary way in which excess food can be rescued from produce to freshly prepared pasta shift allows agencies to have greater access to quality food donors are able to donate their food through the meal connect real-time app doing so reduces food waste and volunteers like you respond to these donations transporting the food to an agency that serves Kentuckians in need as a shift volunteer you have an amazing opportunity to fight hunger on a weekly or daily basis it can be a fun occasional hour of service to your community or a chance to deeply interact with hunger on a more personal basis shift also gives you the opportunity to advocate for food justice in the restaurant industry food scarcity is a problem caused by the lack of access to safe nutritious food rather than the lack of the food's existence there is more than enough food to feed the hungry but we cannot economically distribute it without your help so much food goes to waste but it does not have to third shift food that is safe to eat is delivered to people who need it that same day in order to begin making an impact we first need to explain a meal connect the way meal Connect works is simple first a donor enters a food donation into the meal Connect platform next an agency is assigned this donation a volunteer is then contacted with pickup and drop off details next the volunteer delivers the food from the donor to the agency and finally the agency has good safe food to feed to people who need it most the food you deliver to an agency today will be on someone's plate tonight once you accept the pickup there are steps to take once you arrive at the donor site but we will go through those details later on in this presentation your next step with God's pantry Food Bank is to register as a volunteer in the description below you will see a link that says meal Connect org slash 156 slash volunteers slash sign up when you open this page you will be met with the new volunteer sign up registry this link is unique to God's pantry Food Bank you will type in your information click continue fill out further information and hit finish your account will then be pending approval until our volunteer coordinator approves you this will be done after renee has received your quiz answers and you complete an in-person check in to receive necessary supplies and further specific training after all onboarding steps have been completed you are all set to begin accepting donations because shift is still in its pilot phase you will sometimes receive messages from the meal connect platform as well as from our volunteer coordinator a donation will be sent up for claim and you will reply back if you want to claim that pickup upon which you will receive more information about the specific agency locations if needed this is the beginning of an awesome volunteer partnership next we will learn about what a pickup looks like and how it will take place now let's discuss lesson 3 pickup process and food recovery before your French pickup you will have a meeting with the volunteer coordinator Renee Rigdon this will allow you to receive a laser thermometer thermal blanket and thermal tote which are required to be able to safely transport food additionally you will receive a God's pantry Food Bank ID badge that will grant you access to the pickup area when you arrive at the donor you will show up at the agreed-upon time at the back dock show the employee your ID badge at the back door and follow any required donor procedures you must make sure that the food you receive is in food safe disposable containers these are likely aluminum pans or trays or food safe bags we cannot accept food and trash bags or other food unsafe containers at the donor site you must take the temperature of all types of donated food items if there are multiples of the same item take the temperature of one or two of those items you do not have to take the temperature of dry canned or bakery items all the items need to be recorded at a temperature of 41 degrees Fahrenheit or lower then have a donor site representative sign the form when picking food up there is a short food suitability checklist to go through make sure the food is packaged into a disposable food safe container the container is labeled with the name of the food item the container is dated the day the food item was created the date on the container is 7 or less days ago and the temperature of the food reached 41 degrees Fahrenheit or below if the donated food items do not meet the list of requirements you should politely inform the donor staff that you cannot take the item for food safety reasons have them reach out to God's pantry Food Bank rescue team and contact renee rigdon to let her know that the pickup could not be completed if no food is available at the donor site contact renee rigdon to let her know that the pickup could not be completed after receiving the donation you must transport a donated product directly from the donor site to the assigned agency with no unscheduled stops the drive cannot take more than 30 minutes make sure to list the temperature of the items when you arrive as well as the time you arrived and sign the sheet the donor agency must weigh the items they receive finally let's discuss lesson 4 shifting the conversation about hunger the next step in this process is to grow shift with donors and volunteers in order to encourage new food donors you can whip out your phone and show them the app and how easy it is to use you can also let them know that it is safe to donate and all their donations will be protected by the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Act finally you can tell them it pays to donate by donating through a meal connect it provides their business and enhanced tax credit in order to recruit new volunteers you should tell your friends in Central and Eastern Kentucky since we are always seeking volunteers across our service area then you should educate your work in social groups about hunger by letting them know that one in five children in Kentucky are in danger of hunger and that we are capable of changing that finally take them with you shift deliveries are fun and you can make a meaningful impact on hunger together shift has the potential to increase the number of meals we are able to distribute in our communities it is always important the food is only distributed to the agency to which it is assigned it is also important to know that the agencies we work with have also received food safe training so that the people we are serving are kept safe as the shift volunteer you are a crucial part of the fight
