transformation occurred due to a global pandemic social injustice politics in addition within connections to success we have experienced great change we have been change makers in our leadership so it is with great joy that i introduce to you ruth lee our new ceo at connections to success thank you for that warm introduction mark hello i am ruth lee the new ceo i cannot tell you how excited i am to lead this organization in the future it is my honor to follow in the footsteps of connections to success co-founder and former ceo kathy lambert welcome to our st louis office thank you for joining us you know who we are celebrating change makers i'm so excited to be here with you even if it is in this way virtually this is my third year as mc and i'm so thrilled so honored to be back again this year this is going to be the best tribute to success yet because we are making it work so before we get started let's take a moment to be thankful for the change makers you'll hear about today and also the change makers in your own lives shall we pray lord we thank you we thank you for connections to success lord we thank you for being the ultimate connector lord the ultimate connection is your love for us and we thank you lord we ask you to bless the leadership lord of this incredible organization bless the change makers lord who are doing what they are doing for your glory lord thank you for the volunteers lord we ask you to bless our volunteers bless our supporters lord but most of all bless the women that we are endeavoring to help we are endeavoring to change their lives lord because you changed ours and we pray that you would bless this event today lord bless every person that speaks and especially every person that sees this event today bless us in our virtual lives lord cachubig and i am the owner of higher level we are a workforce management company that helps people find jobs i have seen over the past 25 years many individuals with bad backgrounds had their job opportunities taken away when we started working with connections to success i realized the forever change they made in these individual lives this is the reason i am a co-chair to the tribute to success committee and i hope each of you will take away the passion to be a change maker to help justice involved individuals have a hand up hi i'm gail taylor and i'm very excited to be one of the tri-chairs of this year's connection to success tribute to success event our theme change makers is one that is so powerful we all know change is constant and inevitable growth however is intentional connections to success does so much to transform families individuals moms dad and have such a wealth of resources and support it gives me great honor to do and support and be a part of this amazing organization i hope you enjoy i hope you embrace the moments that we're together in this virtual environment and as the stories are shared i hope you evolve and transform the way connections to success transforms the lives of these families happy you're with us hi everyone i'm ariana warren and i'm serving as one of the tri-chairs for the tribute to success 21 because i love serving connections to success and acknowledging all the work that it does in all of our st louis communities helping women and especially women of color to overcome economic hurdles that could prevent us from reaching financial stability i'm so excited for you for this year's program so that you can see what our change makers have been up to i mean what better theme could there be from 2020 rolling straight into 2021 the one thing that i think that we've all learned is that we really need to embrace change instead of running from it because when we run it tends to find us we're so excited to have you with us here this afternoon i hope that you enjoy the program and we thank you for your presence thank you teresa gayle and ariana wow i am so thrilled always excited to be surrounded by change making women now i'd like to hand it off to ruth once again to talk about a new initiative ruth thank you ladies for your leadership in this year's tribute to success every one of you truly has inspiring stories of your own and we here at cts believe in inspiring people to jump higher we have been blessed and inspired by a new board member a change maker herself who has created a way to encourage younger professionals to become contributing change makers we now have a cts young professional board headed up by madeleine france madeleine represents the third generation of our key donor families she is heading up this new group how powerful it is to have her take the lead on this hi my name is madeline franz and i currently serve on the board of directors for connections to success i am honored to help lead and develop the young professionals board my family has been involved with connections for three generations we're hoping by creating this network of young professionals we'll be able to build lasting relationships for generations to come thank you madeline the young professional board's mission is to empower young professionals to break the cycle of poverty in their communities while they develop as leaders build meaningful relationships and strengthen their own personal and professional skills the vision is to support the mission of connections to success through three key areas volunteerism fundraising and raising awareness if you are interested in serving in this very important role please reach out to me and i will connect you with madeleine right forward to every year the presentation of the dennis and judy jones award dennis and judy are madeleine francis grandparents they were the first generation of this family to support connections to success vision and mission this award presented by madeleine's parents drew and denise is awarded annually to a past participant who has gone on to become a change maker please welcome drew and denise friends today we lift up the change makers of connections to success as we present the 12th annual dennis and judy jones lifetime achievement award tribute to success allows us to recognize an exceptional participant who has excelled at breaking the cycle of generational poverty using connections own programs this year's recipient made a commitment to change for herself her children and her community our honoree is an alumnus of dress for success connections to success and the professional women's group she is the owner of a production company a filmmaker a speaker an advocate a radio talk show host a cancer survivor and she's a wonderful mother she has been described as tenacious with uplifting spirit and unwavering determination she came to connections alone homeless with two children hopeless and broken she exemplifies the tenets of mind over matter today's honoree has taken advantage of every program classes seminars and professional development opportunities connections to success has afforded her and she's used them to excel in her personal professional and spiritual life she epitomized the qualities we look for for a candidate for this award let's hear from our candidate herself [Music] my name is jana gamble my company's purpose productions and i also own a company called designer nails with my 16 year old daughter dionna gamble when she was five months old and my son who's now 19 years old jabri gamble was on the floor playing with his blocks and our home visitor susie russo from youth in need was talking to me i was holding diana and i was super depressed and lost and anxious about our life and how i was going to move forward with these two children i was trying to come out of a domestic violence relationship just in a place of despair and she told me about a little house on fifth street called dress for success and she said i should call them and make an appointment and that's where i found dress for success and connections to success and that's where my journey began when i first walked in it's difficult to find the words to prepare yourself for that type of engagement when you're already in a position where you need a hand up you have to humble yourself anyway to accept it right for one you say okay i'm gonna go and accept these clothes you know these free clothes that's awesome that they're doing this you know like i have to accept that right um that right now i'm not able to go get my own suit um and i need to get a job and some people are available to help me and that's awesome and so i have to be okay with that first right that whole process of like accepting those clothes and then putting the suit on you because it's very very engaging you know they don't just say hey here's a suit go put it on and they or you take the suit home they give you the clothes they take you into the room they touch you you know they they size you up um they they straighten your blouse you know um fix a tie if you're if you're a man you know or or add a brooch to your your your suit um straighten your hair you know they're very you know hands-on so being able to accept that touch um if you're a single mom and you're just to have your kids to love on you it's a lot it's necessary in that experience i felt all those emotions right now i'm feeling it 15 years later feeling all of those emotions you know um hindsight in and working for dress for success being a participant working the program i'm i'm overstanding the process um for myself and everyone else that's gone through it it's a beautiful thing it's a really beautiful thing so when you have a purpose and a path that hasn't been outlined for you and it's special and you have an assignment that you must take that's different from others you have to pave a new road and you have to trust that and you have to be bold and you have to keep moving forward no matter what when people say no when people say yes [Music] when you get denied when there's no food when everything looks gray and but you know what the vision is and you know what the outcome is going to be you have to keep pressing forward no matter what and you have to be obedient to it and that's been like the biggest word this year for me is obedience so that's what i've been marinating on you know with this and have to just trust the process [Music] that i'm grateful for everything that has happened and that the success that has taken place up until now and i cannot wait for what is to come because there's so much more that is ahead of now that is way way far beyond what i can even imagine or think or is just mind-blowing and i cannot wait for all of that and i'm so grateful for everything that's already happened so grateful because that's what made me and that's what helped build me into who i am as hard as those times have been but i'm so grateful for it and i would not change it for the world because it's helped me change the world it's helped me change the moment carol may i introduce to you a woman who inspired by her faith for the past 24 years has helped families achieve economic independence our keynote speaker kathy lambert [Applause] for the past 23 years our focus has been walking alongside individuals and families experiencing poverty facing life-scarring situations such as homelessness domestic violence substance abuse incarceration those who are unemployed and underemployed it has been a journey of the heart of faith of learning and one of gratitude we imagined a world where we could disrupt generational poverty and create community where everyone felt welcomed and loved where they had hope and a plan for a better future for themselves and for their children so over the years we created a holistic economic mobility model where we believe individuals are at the center of their own success we emphasize supportive networks employment training education and community engagement we created a learning environment where staff and participants do life together because none of us can do this thing called life alone so today connections to success has locations across illinois missouri and kansas along with 13 membership sites in seven states this past year has been unprecedented with the pandemic and in spite of all the challenges our team along with our partners and volunteers made miracles happen 338 individuals completed the 60-hour personal professional development class and that was done virtually 66 completed skill-based training 477 job placements and the average wage 14.30 an hour the top industries of employment are warehouse manufacturing general labor and 1058 individuals have been served with life-long engagement and our recidivism rate meaning those going back to incarcerate to be incarcerated after one year is less than five percent and if you think about that and you think about people getting employed and what it saves on our taxes as brad always says that our program doesn't cost it pays so dreams really do come true and to disrupt poverty is what we've seen happen and you've seen that witness today by janet gamble my favorite theologian jim wallace said that faith is believing in spite of the evidence and seeing the evidence change we experience seeing that evidence change every day at connections to success so in this time of transition brad and i have had the opportunity to reflect on what some of the core areas that we believe have contributed to the long-term success of individuals and families that we serve so there's three key areas it's our culture it's how we do our work and it's partnerships and volunteers so with our culture we believe that everyone matters that it's about transformation not transaction we hold their dreams until they can see them and as father boyle from homeboy industries that i've learned from him is that it's not about us and them there's only us and also creating community and feeling that everyone feels a part of so every day across all of our offices in all of our locations everyone that's there including the ups delivery driver we do a gratitude circle we have an atmosphere of learning and co-creating and trust creating a space to feel safe and experience what can be possible so how do we do our work our family-centered model well it begins with our 60-hour personal professional development class it's incorporating the life plan and taking a look at their life holistically it's healthy relationships on fatherhood and motherhood and expanding a person's social capital as you heard jana talk about it's our professional women's group and peer mentoring it's helping to bridge those connections getting people that are mentors and volunteers from the community and it's linking others to the community for health care their finances and then number three is our partnerships and volunteers our partnerships with education workforce development training apprenticeships economic development and child support social services department of corrections i could go on and on and on we can't do it alone our partnerships with our donors our foundations and corporations you're the core that has kept us going and then volunteers there's never enough money to do what needs to get done it takes all of us working together and we have amazing volunteers who go above and beyond and to give of themselves and their time and their treasures we are so so grateful so what's ahead as we emerge from this pandemic there's a great need for an economic revival nowhere in this time is there more important time than what right now for us to reskill upskill and re-employ there's hundreds and thousands of individuals in our community that will require a tremendous amount of effort collaboration among all of us to leverage our resources connections to success is a key stakeholder and is poised to be significant and amount in training coaching mentoring and our whole family approach to economic development so as our season comes to an end we are so grateful to all of you all of you who are angels you know who you are i couldn't do this without you our board of directors our team all of you that have come together to make this happen our lives are so much richer because of you and the individuals that we serve i can't thank you enough because i've learned from you on what and how we needed to do this work thank you from the bottom of our hearts hold on kathy please stay on the stage just a bit longer someone very special is going to join you ruth lee it's now your time hi ruth hi brad ruth kathy connections to success to the next level you can't leave me you have to be with me i know there's no real last time but no um these shoes are so difficult to feel but i promise you that i will love this organization and love our participants and love on janna and this team as much as you have i promise i won't let you down dennis and drew i told you i'm not going anywhere this is my life so thank you thank you everyone i appreciate you thank you oh god god i love you too oh goodness okay thank you thank you very much thank you thank you so much thank you so much kathy we were so naive 33 years ago walking into the first working women's survival show we were going to change the world and you did it with brad by your side you two are angels walking among us and knowing what god has guided you to achieve we cannot wait to see what he has in store for you now so in 1989 i met brad and kathy at brambert international airport at cinnabun i just proposed to my wife on concourse d in an area where i thought there was nobody around and then a plane deported and we had an audience so we made our way to cinnabun to meet brad and kathy and that was the start of our relationship with them but our engagement with connections to success started shortly thereafter doing the redo of the page dell facility having the 10 years of the christmas party and the santa workshop it really gave us the opportunity to meet the participants and their family and what an effect connections had on them kathy you had a dream brad you were committed to that dream also and connection is who they are today because of that dream today we celebrate the change makers of connections and i think we can all agree that kathy and brad you are the change makers not one of us would be here without you on behalf of the thousands of hearts and minds you have touched we present to you this custom presentation box designed and made by our good friends at made st louis and third degree glass factory as a token of our gratitude for 23 years and thousands of tears kathy i am so moved that you have trusted me with this great organization that you founded 24 years ago i heard about your story 24 years ago when you provided me the first or provided the first suit at that time it was an extraordinary story and now we have a special presentation for the both of you brad kathy to two extraordinary human beings that has led this organization for 24 years and still growing i'm so happy that the both of you entrusted me to take this thing forward i want you to enjoy your time off in a way but just be is a special person i know when the video was on everybody was crying because i know that i was so thank you jamie for being here with us today i i'm so glad to meet you so honored thank you thank you so much of course like i said earlier yeah we heard about your story 24 years yes i know just a little bit about you and the first suit that you gave to a woman right and the shoes that literally she took off of her feet so as a small token of our appreciation of you today i want to give back your red high-heeled shoes that you so selfishly gave away 20. these are beautiful thank you so kathy take your shoes back i'm going to can i try them all right here i'm going to put it back on okay put them on aren't these fun they fit how about that thank you so much thank you thank you welcome oh my gosh this is fantastic i love them so thank you yes if you don't know the story she gave them away right off of her feet helping a young lady with the new suit so that she can look perfect for her interview this young lady had on tennis shoes and kathy had just bought these shoes and they wore the same size so if that's not god i don't know who it is i'm happy i know take your shoes back thank you wear them with pride i will thank you so much thank you okay you know as the new ceo to connections to success i want to personally thank each and every one of you for your support today as we kick off 2021 we feel a need and desire to focus on the promise of the new year ahead especially after all the changes challenges and uncertainties of 2020 but i want to take you a moment to share a little story about my journey home to connections to success and the reason why i am incredibly proud to lead this organization you know because i truly am connections to success my sister and i were raised by a single mother a secretary who didn't make much money i lived across the street from the number two drug dealer in the home that i grew up and around the corner for the number one drug dealer much like some of our families we serve there were times that we didn't have enough to eat i remember not having heat for an entire winter so not only was it cold in the house without gas there was no hot water which meant cold baths except for the time we were able to heat the stove trust me on many occasions i was happy to visit and couch live at a friend's house i also remember the times when my mom didn't eat dinner because there just wasn't enough food and i remember the times i saw her crying because she couldn't afford to buy his clothes i still remember the salary of 800 a month because i had to work while i was in school in order to help pay bills leading connections to success for me is not just a job it's a calling in 1980 i was accepted into a premier in rhodes program a leadership program for talented minority students interested in business and engineering errol's focus at the time was on teenagers from low income households who had a certain gta and potential for success with the right culture it's an amazing 50 year old organization that helped change lives of many people directly before attending college i was thrilled that emeralds helped me to secure an interview with ibm but the problem was i didn't have anything to wear you know we all remember those pivotal times in our life that affect you greatly and this by far was one of them this internship was going to make my mother proud and helped change the trajectory of our lives however like i said i didn't have anything to wear for my interview and i never forget how i went to a friend's house to borrow a suit and she forgot my request and she wasn't home when i arrived i was in tears because again we couldn't purchase the new suit so in desperate need to do something i went to a neighbor's house and explained my situation and she tried to help poor thing she gave me a striped dress with the round peter pan collar you remember those days i'm probably aging myself and she gave me a pair of pantyhose that were two shades lighter than my skin color i made it to the interview on time but i didn't get the job i'm sure it's because i didn't present well it's hard to be your best self when you don't feel confident and i felt very insecure with the outfit that made me feel terrible we all know that you look good when you feel good so fast forward a few months when i met with the executive recruiter about an opportunity here with connections to success my first question was is this for real is this truly a genuine opportunity or is someone already chosen and they're just going through the motions for this position and i said to her please tell me this is a genuine opportunity because i see myself leading this organization i would be terribly heartbroken and sad if i don't have a sincere opportunity to be considered because you must understand i am connections to success helping underserved communities have been my life helping women succeed is my passion but it's also imperative to have a strong team with you a leader is nothing without a strong team i've worked in a number of industries and various leadership positions and my goal has always been to coach individuals to their level of excellence much like we do at connections to success you have to provide opportunities for inclusion encourage new ideas from all levels and mentor as much as you can when i was in charge of a marketing and development department at a local health center in my hometown no one in my department had been promoted for 10 years why it's because the leadership un erestimated their ability to excel to me it meant i had the smartest team in the health center because they spent time up close and personal with our patients i was proud that before i left i promoted people who still remain in their roles today because you see faith in others can go a long way to someone's success just an ounce just a mustard seed of faith is all they need that's what we do here at connections to success we provide faith hope and dreams for everyone we serve i want those that we do serve to feel fantastic i want them to know their dreams i want to see their sparkle of brilliance whether it's a member of our organization or those we serve too often people underestimate anyone because of their circumstances and that connections to success that is unacceptable connections to success is about playing a significant role in helping women youth and our families who don't feel hopeful i grew up trying to dream with reality too often knocking me down but now i'm internally grateful because without those difficult times i wouldn't be here today i am proud and humbled for this opportunity to lead connections to success in the future we have a lofty vision and i can't wait to share it with all of you there's a saying that goes something like this you've got to accept the past embrace the future and live in the present well our vision is not just set for 2021 but for many years to come i've never been more excited to lead our expansion plans while we continue to do what this organization has done daily for the last 24 years impacting lives for the better meant of one family one woman one person at a time will you join me do you see why i had to call on a higher power to introduce those two they are remarkable and dynamic indeed now it's time for you our friends and partners to help us connections to success staff is there every step of the way helping families to achieve economic independence it's life-changing work that impacts not only the adults as you can imagine but their entire family and now ruth has a very special announcement ruth i'm so excited to bring to you some special gifts so i'm going to invite two very important people here paul hot who is the president of our board of directors and kathy lambert thank you ruth and bruce i'm going to go off script if that's okay i love here's the key and i really wanted both of you here so as the president of the board juan i want to say thank you so much but first i want to say kathy you have been an inspiration for me as a change maker it's about being able to touch people's lives and understand who they are and really help us be better you've done that for me thank you you've done that clearly connection to success for everybody that's watching this it's a family it is not an organization it's a team that's right and so with that i just want to say thank you so much for the impact you've made not only on the organization but really on the broader society it's amazing absolutely amazing and with that here's here's where i'm going off script okay um because one as part of edward jones clearly a wonderful sponsor and appreciate that but what i want to do is start essentially the opportunity to give and i want to give an additional five thousand dollars personally to the organization [Music] and what you said when you said i am connection to success you
