welcome to registration this is an important time as you are preparing to be a sophomore next year and looking towards your life after graduation from high school the first step in registration is signing up for courses that are required to graduate the next step in registration is signing up for courses that will assist you with your career and educational goals for life after high school if this is the time that you will be registering you should have a registration worksheet in front of you and be prepared as the video progresses to make your selections for your eight classes and three alternates your teacher will pause the video at the correct spots and give you the opportunity to do this let's begin we will start with english as a 10th grader students will need to sign up for english 2 or english 2 honors please remember in order to be eligible for an honors class you must have an a or b in the prerequisite course or have teacher recommendation pause please look closely at the math slide to graduate from high school you must have passed math 1 math 2 math three and a fourth math your math teacher has advised you on to what math would be best for you you may also use the recommended course sequence listed in the curriculum guide that is online it is recommended for students to take a math class each year this is helpful whether you plan to attend a community college or a four-year university if you are looking for a fourth math to take there are some important things to consider if you plan to attend a four-year university then you must take one of the options listed that includes north carolina math four discrete math for computer science pre-calculus or another one if you do not plan to attend a four-year university then you can take an alternate fourth math your teacher has a math worksheet that can help you with this process pause as a 10th grader as a 10th grader you will choose to take physical science or honors biology if you plan on taking ap biology in high school then it will be important for you to take honors biology and chemistry next year if you don't plan on taking honors level science then you will register for physical science as a 10th grader please know that if you are planning to attend a four-year university directly out of high school it would be important for you to take chemistry and physics as your requirement for physical science pause for social studies you will take civics or civics honors paul's german and spanish language classes are available at west if you plan on attending a four-year college then you must take two of the same language please note we encourage students to take up to four of the same language if you plan to take four languages please begin them by your 10th grade year if you only plan to take two please begin them no earlier than your junior year pause there are other graduation requirements the first is health and pe everyone must have this credit next are electives each student must have two elective credits in any combination from the career and technical education department the arts department or world language each graduate must have a total of 11 electives it is strongly recommended that you have four elective credits from one of these areas the career and technical education department jrotc the arts department which includes visual arts chorus band and theater or any other subject area pause we have a lot of electives available here at west caldwell so the next few slides are dedicated to these electives please take this opportunity to make notes as to what electives you may be interested in taking for next year here lists all of our departments in a lot of their electives in the english department creative writing s-a-t-a-c-t prep mythology and yearbook in the social studies department psychology crime and justice honors united nations apus history and the college courses history 131-132 science forensics anatomy astronomy ap environmental ap human geography honors biotech ap biology and ap physics math any math beyond your fourth math is considered a math elective we have german and spanish and in the pe department fall sports spring sports weight training and a reminder students can only register for two pe classes per year in the cte department we have many departments business health science construction plumbing masonry horticulture animal science family and consumer science this will be explained in more detail in a minute the arts department theater art chorus band chorus and band are year long unless there's a scheduling conflict and we also offer the college class music 110 and the rotc department naval science one two three and four staff and command and leadership lab in the curriculum guide you will be able to read and find out which of these classes 10th graders can take pause now we will talk specifically about cte courses there is an advantage to taking cte courses the first is articulated credit if you make a grade of a b in the course and score a 93 on the post assessment and enroll in the north carolina community college within two years of graduating from high school then this course will count as articulated credit which means you get your college credit for free the second advantage advantage is credentials this helps you become ready to go into the workforce you can earn these credentials free through your cte classes and they could increase your starting pay there is a cte handout that you will be given north carolina department of public instruction recognizes these credentials in lieu of the state exam so if you earn these credentials in your class you will receive an automatic 100 on your final exam these are some great advantages there are 16 cte pathways these are explained in the curriculum guide first we will look at the business classes that can be offered here you will see a list of the business classes and what grades can take these classes and whether they are offered just regular or regular and honors pause next you will see the classes offered within family and consumer science and health science pause next you will see the classes within the trade and industry class these do include our new class this year called animal science halls internships are also another class under the cte department internships require an application and have requirements in addition to that your academic record you must have a 2.5 gpa for career and teaching internships a 3.0 gpa for health internships they also look at your attendance your discipline and the recommendations from teachers some of the placement possibilities for internships include these listed here from schools to pharmacies to banks there's a lot of choices applicants must have their own transportation if you are interested in an internship it does have to be signed up as an alternate because there has to be approval the application link is located on the west coast high school web page you click on the student tab then student information then the internship application all applications are due march 20th 2021 pause there are other special classes at west caldwell that do require permission or an application these include yearbook broadcast video media assistant community action project ncvps internships and college classes please note that 10th graders can take yearbook broadcast video media assistant ncbps and some college classes pause now we will look at the college classes that you can take in high school we have a wonderful opportunity with cccnti to take college classes while you're in high school there's two ways that you can do that the first is through the technical education department although typically you have to be a junior or senior and have an unweighted gpa of 2.8 or principal approval freshmen and sophomores may be eligible for programs noted with an asterisk so as you look at this list the programs that have an asterisk or programs that you may be eligible to take as a sophomore miss varela or another ccc and ti advisor will be by your classroom to answer questions and to hand out applications pause the firefighter academy is now connected as a college course it is located at south caldwell or high brighton depending on the semester even though you cannot take it as a sophomore it's important for you to realize that that will be available for you as a junior and senior pause the next department that high school students can take college classes is through the college transfer pathway this is only for juniors and seniors however it's important for you to know now that this is an opportunity for you when you become a junior or senior pause some of these classes are taught at west caldwell the two history classes 131 and 132 and the music appreciation class music 110. starting next year we will have a highway room here at west caldwell that is used for students to take ccc and ti classes here at west caldwell they will be taught by teachers at the college but you will be seated here in the classroom at west caldwell next year these are the classes that are offered here through the highway room and granted even though you as a sophomore cannot take these classes i think it's important for you to know now that as a junior and senior there will be a lot of availability for you to take college classes pause so how do you know if you're eligible for honors or ap classes for honors if you're eligible to take an honors class you must have an a or b in the prior course or have teacher permission for ap classes you're eligible for these college-level courses if you've made an a or b in the prior honors course or an a in the previous course with teacher permission ap courses that could be offered here are the ap english language and composition which counts as english 3 the ap literature class which counts as english 4 ap biology ap environmental ap physics ap psychology ap human geography ap calculus and ap statistics please note that some of these courses are year long because they have prerequisites after you register for classes teachers will review the list to make sure and make the final approval of whether or not you're recommended for honors or ap pause let's talk about credits you must have a certain amount of credits to be promoted to the next grade to earn a credit you must pass a class to pass a class you must make the grade of a d or better so how are you promoted to the next grade to be a 10th grader next year you must pass six or more classes and that way you would be earning six or more credits now we want everyone to pass all eight classes this year and earn those eight credits but in order to be a tenth grader you must earn six credits which means past six classes pause it's important for you to know now that there are graduation honors these will be based off your cumulative grade point average at the end of the third nine weeks of your senior year this means that your grade point average from ninth grade up until your senior year will make the determination of whether or not you graduate with honors here are some of the ways you can graduate with honors to be an honor graduate 3.5 or higher weighted gpa to be an nc scholar 3.5 or higher unweighted gpa plus other requirements to be a presidential education award winner 3.5 and higher unweighted gpa and other requirements and then we have our north carolina high school diploma endorsements all this information is in your curriculum guide on pages h through i pause so the day of registration you will step one review your transcript to see what credits you've earned you will click complete the graduation checklist to help you determine what you need for next year step 2 you will then put your name and power school number on your registration worksheet step 3 at each pause of the video while you're watching the video you'll complete the registration worksheet by selecting 8 classes and 3 alternates then step four you will turn in the completed registration worksheet to your teacher remember to put your full name on it just to review on the day of registration you'll review your transcript to see what credits you've earned complete the graduation checklist to help you determine what you need for next year then with your registration worksheet you'll put your full name and powerschool number on it and at each pause while you're watching the video you'll complete that registration worksheet select eight classes and three alternates at the end you will
