[Music] hi and welcome to our kc agc event building community i'm don greenwell your executive director and we have a rich conversation planned for you today our chapter leadership and staff been working very hard to bring you quality meaningful virtual events and today we'll be hearing insights from tammy edwards who's senior vice president of the federal reserve bank kansas city to kick things off let's cozy up to the bar with our new chapter president parker young parker is president of straub construction and he'll be leading our chapter for 2021 and 2022 he has over three decades of experience in our industry and the vision to advance it his vision of the future and experience to really make things happen so come on let's join parker at the bar hey parker thanks for joining in on the e-get together how are you doing good good wish you were here yeah i wish we could be together um and i'm feeling like we will be this this year things are gonna get better we're gonna make a lot of lemonade out of some lemons so you know tell me about your thoughts uh for your presidency here for 2021 and 2022 what would be some top opportunities and maybe some priorities for the chapter well first of all don i think we all would recognize that going into 2020 we would have never thought of uh and anticipated quite the challenges that our industry faced obviously a couple of them are have been challenges that we as an industry have faced for a number of years and will continue to do so because it's a generational challenge and that's qualified workforce and contractor development workforce development that type of thing but i think the other thing that we learned in 2020 and i think it's a priority for us as an organization let alone as an industry is flexibility adaptability being able to adjust to circumstances beyond our control to still deliver the highest quality product safely to our clients and um making sure that folks are taken care of and and we as a industry continue to grow what challenging times what great opportunities too i just i thought about you so many times uh over this past years i know what straub's you know 100 year anniversary century mark are there things in particular as you move into the company's second century that you see as opportunities and areas of development well it's a great question and and you know when you when you've been around for a hundred plus years um it's it makes you think back and fortunately we as a as a kansas city construction community have a number of members uh who have uh sustained for that kind of duration so that's that's a testament to the work ethic and and the midwest values from opportunity standpoint you know we discovered through an exercise uh of interviewing our clients and our and our employees and our partners and our vendors a few years ago of of really what are the what are the opportunities for us as an organization and you know going through that it became abundantly clear that leaders in our community need need a partner who truly can help bring their vision together and so our focus has been on being an advocate and working with organizations who are serving others in the community and we're genuinely excited about the prospects of 2021 2022 and there's a lot of wonderful exciting things that are going on in kansas city that i think will help us as an industry be able to continue to thrive and grow we were slower to recover from the 08 recession and i think that we'll be able to sustain through through these trying times the next short while yeah and your your leadership you know really resonates through the chapter uh on looking at other constituencies there is a broader community and that's you know a big focus of our discussion today with tammy edwards uh with kc fed it's about community uh that is also leading into economic development that it's all inter interwoven so a lot of opportunities to look at much broader impact i think something else that that 2020 showed you and the staff at agc and the builders earned every dollar that our members put in in dues and making sure that our companies our individual workers were able to continue to work without the fear of being shut down and advocating for us as an associate as an industry um to make sure that we were in position to be able to survive uh unprecedented times it was so energizing uh particularly at the beginning of the pandemic that you know like you and i are texting like it seemed like 24x7 right members and you know with the mayor of kansas city and just trying to get you know all the different home rules so that we could operate in a way that is safe for our workforce and for our communities but yeah to continue our economy and so having that really focusing on the health protocol and our safety team just being on it having a hotline phone number for people in the field to call in all these great ideas that came through a management as well as our craft partners and it was very unifying i found it to be a very energizing period of our history i i agree completely and i think the other thing that um a take away is and and it ties back to your comment on the safety programs and as an industry how to um you know adapt and adjust and overcome the challenges that are presented um just extremely proud of of all the all the various organizations and and companies that came up with ways of you know they seem like why haven't we been doing this before all those things are seem like common sense now 10 months into a pandemic but at the time it was quick to be adapted adapted and and just proud of how our industry responded and quite frankly that responsibility is what was key to allow us to continue to work well i look forward to an incredible 2021 and into next year during your your two-year term thank you so much for your leadership uh and thank you for your friendship well thank you my friend cheers to you don and thanks to everyone with agc and i can't wait until we all get back together and can break bread together again cheers cheers it's always great to catch up with a friend like parker young he's going to do such a great job as our chapter president for 2021 and 2022. as we discussed there is much to be done within our industry to really understand how we can best accomplish recovery not only in the general economy but within the industry and we are very blessed as an association to have the national agency and some of the top economists in construction spilling over the data analyzing us taking a look at our local community partners to see what regional variations we might see and figure our best progress and advancement for our industry moving forward next step we have a great conversation with tammy edwards svp and community engagement and inclusion director of the federal reserve bank of kansas city tammy is a member of the bank's management committee which is responsible for the casey fed's strategic planning and policy direction she also serves as the bank's director of office of minority and women inclusion the community engagement and inclusion division addresses community and economic development challenges faced by our underserved population fosters the development of women and minorities in banking manages diversity and inclusion strategies and programs across the business lines and facilitates the bank's community engagement initiatives tammy joined the bank in july 2008 after holding various leadership positions at sprint now t-mobile she earned her undergraduate degree in marketing and an mba in finance from the university of missouri kansas city tammy is very active in a number of civic and community organizations she currently serves on the boards of the kansas city friends of alvin ailey casey scholars workforce investment board casey public television the jacob and ella loose foundation as well as being an active member of the saint james methodist church and a chapter of links incorporated as well as the university of missouri kansas city african american leaders council and the central exchange she still found time to spend with us today she's going to provide us with great insights into the community and economic development please join me in welcoming tammy to our event hi tammy great to see you how you been you know i've been uh well considering all that we um we've been going through how are you good i'm considering it to be 20 20 plus and looking forward to 2021. it's so good to be with you it's good to be with you too it's been it's been too long so uh yeah like a year since we've been together it seems almost like two or three first of all thank you for the invitation to to join you today and um to thank you for your service because many may not know that you are on one of our banks advisory councils our community development advisory council and um you and your colleagues on the council play a um a very important role for for what we do in community development at the kansas city fed so i want to thank you for for your service and i look forward to when we can meet in person but i know we're meeting like we are today virtually but it doesn't take the place of a meeting meeting a person thank you tam i i tell you why it is the biggest honor to be on that committee i am a federal reserve geek and always have been when we travel to other american cities that have a fed bank we go visit and that included my honeymoon in san francisco so oh this was a great pleasure to be able to serve on the committee it's been a while since i've been on my honeymoon almost 34 years but we did not go to a federal reserve so i'm very impressed well so uh tell us a bit about your background and what brought you to the kc fed well you know i was uh first of all you know i was born and raised here in kansas city and uh you know although i have traveled to and worked in several countries around the world i've always considered kansas city my my home and i i've started my career here in kansas city at sprint i was known way back then as united telecom and i started as an intern and throughout my 26 year you know career there i worked in various um organizations throughout the the company in our long distance local international division and of course the wireless division at the end of my career and it was just a great opportunity to utilize my my marketing and product development and technology background to um to to work with some some great people but it was because of my uh relationship and my involvement in the community and on certain boards here in kansas city that um i had the great fortune and i always have the great fortune to meet wonderful people who represent um some of kansas city's finest organizations but in particular uh people that i met at the kansas city fayette through my board work attracted me to the bank uh 12 years ago to lead community development and fast forward i now lead a division one of 11 divisions at the bank uh we are focused on community and economic development in the seven states that we serve as well as diversity and inclusion for my internal customers are 2 000 employees and um and we also are responsible for employee volunteerism and our programming with women bankers and bankers of color throughout the country and how big of an area does the kansas city federal reserve follow you know i tell the people that we we basically cover the midwest uh we are responsible for seven states and um so the the the western part of missouri all the way to uh wyoming uh basically is our our footprint uh we have the second largest footprint by size geographic size um in the whole federal reserve system and with you know responsibility in the monetary policy uh part of our country what's the interaction what's the interplay with your work in community development well you know still even though we're in 2021 um some people are surprised that the federal reserve that we have a community development function but you know we've had this function since the early 80s and it was basically mandated by congress when uh the community's reinvestment act was um passed into federal law and um we call it cra for short so when cra was enacted that was put into place to make sure that all communities especially low and moderate income communities had fair and uh equal access to financial services um and products and so each of the 12 reserve banks as well as you know the other federal regulators uh we established um community development functions uh within for our particular district and uh to work with banks to ensure that they were uh investing in the communities that they serve of course since the late 80s we have expanded that portfolio to uh to include other areas uh and in our district we focus on in addition to the cra work with bankers we focus on workforce development small business development affordable housing financial education especially for for low and moderate income adults digital inclusion and um and our work with um uh workforce development and i don't know if did i already say workforce development i want to make sure i get all of our areas in there yeah we uh we really focus uh the builders association agcm workforce development as well so it's uh it's great to have that particular intersectionality with you and where we are now uh in this continuing pandemic you know of the issues including workforce development and all those critical issues you were listing out for our communities what is kind of top of mind for you right now about where we as a business community and community of people should focus it would be my hope that um our community and i know we we are in several ways but we really focus on those who are most impacted by this pandemic and um from a community development standpoint um those communities are people of color low income women and small business small business owners especially small businesses of color have been impacted disproportionately uh due to the pandemic you know since um uh february 7.8 million people have fallen into poverty and which is the the biggest plunge if you will in a single year since since data has been tracked and that's for the last 60 years of course our small businesses have been impacted with loss of revenue due to your closures or having to readjust their business models and we we have um students who are in a remote learning situation still today with 11 months after it started and many of whom especially if they're in low-income households um may not have adequate access to broadband uh are the devices to use you know internet you know we here in in kansas city you know we're estimating that at least 30 percent of you know lower income households don't have devices and nationally we know that it's about four and a half million households with children um who don't have uh consistent access to a computer so you know we have lots of challenges in this community that we need to to wrap around uh wrap our heads around but the good thing about this community and the people i know who are in this community is that we have great minds we have people with um a great heart who really want to roll up their sleeves and be part of the solution uh your thoughts uh maybe particularly in the area i think of you know the intersection again of our construction industry and the community at large things like transportation and the streetcar funding those kinds of projects what are your hopes and visions out of things that are in motion now in kansas city uh that we could continue to accelerate you know with with projects already underway or projects that maybe are still in the planning stages one of my first pieces of advice um to those who are leading those initiatives is to partner with others don't don't go it alone because when you get you know a diversity of thought around the table um you you can innovate and you ideate in ways that you didn't uh imagine and another critical piece of information that we uh a piece of advice that we really remain focused on at our work at the kansas city fed is that when we are working on solutions for others that um whoever that solution is meant to impact that we it's important that we have them at the table so you mentioned the streetcar and transportation it is my hope that those who utilize public transportation have bee at the table to inform those who are working on these projects on things that would make that particular project more usable for the community in in which it's meant to impact and for maybe uh staff of the federal reserve yourself the impact of the pandemic as well are you working from home on those days the thing with this pandemic is um everyone around the world has been impacted in in some way um as far as uh the kansas city fed and our 2000 plus employees we went primarily to a remote um work posture in mid-march and um at that time we said well two weeks we'll you know go home for two weeks work from home and we'll see you in two weeks and then of course now it's january but um i've been so excited and so proud of my colleagues to see that despite the challenges the personal challenges that they uh may be enduring and of course the professional challenges of working remotely um i'm so proud that they continue to to to live the values of our bank of integrity and service to others personal growth and development innovation and inclusion uh and now in regards to my my own team and the community development work that we do what we intended to provide to to our customers in 2020 for the most part it remained on track now the biggest impact to us was really how we had planned to deliver the content we host about 100 programs in face-to-face programs a year presentations roundtables conferences for hundreds of people and so in march of course that um uh that change and we quickly went to work to to pivot is that that we're all saying these days to investigate um efficient and effective ways to uh to deliver that content virtually in a virtual setting we've gotten familiar with some technology that uh more technology than we ever thought was even on the market and but we we get up every day focused on uh delivering what we and intended to deliver to those we we serve wonderful i'm so grateful for your work in the community and throughout the district it was absolutely wonderful to work with uh one quick last question uh super bowl 55 do you have a pic of teams or a world champion which you would uh you would predict who who is not predicting that um the kansas city chiefs will not only be in the super bowl but will but will win the super bowl well thank you so much tammy it's so great being with you well thank you it's a great being with you and i look forward to seeing you soon take care take care that was great having tammy's insight into our community in regional economy we're so grateful for having her here today so our chapter you know it's founded on people it's founded on volunteers members staff and so today we have to tribute someone who's been in the industry working for the association and your chapter for 32 years robin norris our membership director will be retiring tomorrow she has spent over three decades serving you as an industry and your company and we just have a really special tribute we'd like to move to next but i want to personally thank you robin personally and professionally for all energy she's a good getter only they're very friendly she makes me feel so comfortable to be around her she's just always been a can-do person with such a strong work ethic just a wonderful mentor and friend the introducer to the latino community she never was shy you know and everybody knows that she always looking for ways to meet new people new cultures so with the latino community i was very pleased more than pleased that she went out there and even tried to learn spanish try to talk spanish so no job is too big or no job is too small robin will do anything she will help me sweep the floor to the training center or she'll stand in front of a room and present you know numbers or ideas for the industry in her long service in the construction industry has provided a great incentive and motivation for all of us that are plowing through and i'm a little jealous that she gets to retire robin is just always such a great fun person to be around and her smile infectious smile and her positive attitude is just going to be something we're all going to miss robin felicidades congratulations your retirement enjoy it we are going to miss you and don't be a stranger please anytime you hear my fault we'll be here for you take care of yourself robin norris congratulations on your retirement very well deserved your accomplishments will be felt throughout this industry for many years I researched a few eSignature software apps and settled on airSlate SignNow a couple years ago. As CFO and head of business development, I use airSlate SignNow frequently for partnership agreements and shareholder docs. I like the uncluttered user interface, which makes using this product straightforward and fast. It also saves time to upload commonly used agreements as templates into airSlate SignNow. Adding additional users in our organization is easy and cost effective.

How do you make a document that has an electronic signature?

How do you make this information that was not in a digital format a computer-readable document for the user? " "So the question is not only how can you get to an individual from an individual, but how can you get to an individual with a group of individuals. How do you get from one location and say let's go to this location and say let's go to that location. How do you get from, you know, some of the more traditional forms of information that you are used to seeing in a document or other forms. The ability to do that in a digital medium has been a huge challenge. I think we've done it, but there's some work that we have to do on the security side of that. And of course, there's the question of how do you protect it from being read by people that you're not intending to be able to actually read it? " When asked to describe what he means by a "user-centric" approach to security, Bensley responds that "you're still in a situation where you are still talking about a lot of the security that is done by individuals, but we've done a very good job of making it a user-centric process. You're not going to be able to create a document or something on your own that you can give to an individual. You can't just open and copy over and then give it to somebody else. You still have to do the work of the document being created in the first place and the work of the document being delivered in a secure manner."
