What is the purpose of "safe spaces" on college and university campuses?
People misunderstand the idea of a safe space. Every space should not be safe. Rather, there should be some space that is safe. “Safe”, in this context, means that you can expect to be free from whatever -ism affects you. This isn't a new concept. There are black bars, gay bars, and women-only gyms, for example. Those places arose because people from those groups wanted somewhere they wouldn't be called the n-word or a fag and wouldn't get hit on constantly. There are black and Latinx fraternities and sororities, and of course fraternities and sororities are themselves gender-safe spaces.A word on trigger warnings: they are there to help folks with PTSD avoid flashbacks. They aren't there to prevent students from having to confront hard material.Unfortunately both safe spaces and trigger warnings are overused. A classroom is not supposed to be a safe space (in this sense). A trigger warning is not supposed to help you avoid all difficult material.I also think that we unfortunately dismiss the need for majority safe spaces. White people and men in particular sometimes lack spaces where they can speak freely, and racism and sexism affect them too, even if the net effect is usually positive. How do you expect a white person to grapple with racism in a place where they're afraid of saying something racist by mistake?I know some folks are snidely thinking, “What about the country club?” But being a majority white male space doesn't make it a safe space. What makes it safe is the permission given by and to all those present to speak freely. In fact, a safe space doesn't even have to be divided by race or gender at all, if permission to speak freely is truly and honestly given by all.So yes, safe spaces are necessary, but not every place should be a safe one, and safe places should be available for everyone, not just minority groups.

What are the best ways to validate a startup idea?
Validating your business idea is crucial before you shell out thousands of dollars into building a product, setting up the business and hiring people. I recently spoke to Sam Hysell, he's worked with the Lean Startup team and now works with new entrepreneurs to help them validate their ideas, you can find the interview here: http://apple.co/1LNPWnM. I'll go into brief detail about what we've covered below. The best thing about the time period that we're living in is that technology has enabled entrepreneurs to able to validate their idea at a nominal cost. It has never been cheaper to start an internet business. Here's how I would validate it:1) Set up a landing page. Before you go out and shell out thousands of dollars on hiring a developer, just see if people would even be into the idea by creating a very clear and concise landing page. The landing page should describe what the product is, how it works (3 clear steps) and a sign up button where someone can submit their name to be added to the wait list. Take a look at http://quickmvp.com you can literally set up a landing page in five minutes that contains a clear call to action. You can even test interest levels based on different price points to see if customers would be willing to pay for your service. This is a great tool to help validate your idea and you get great analytics to see how engaged people are with your idea.2) Find out who's interested and bring people towards your landing page to see if people would sign up. If you're getting a lot of signups your steps closer to validating your idea. With Quickvp you could spend $30 on Google ads. I also like this one tool called Http://flutter-app. I use this all the time to test out new features for LawTrades. You can follow accounts that contain your ideal customers very quickly with a few clicks. For instance, if I was opening up a new taco shop, I can use Flutter-app to follow people that follow Chipotle, or Taco bell since my ideal customers are probably following those accounts. Doing this manually would take forever, but you can do this with Flutter very quickly. Make sure your Twitter bio has a link to your landing page so people know what to click on. If a few days go by and your landing page is getting traffic but no signups then tweak the landing page.3) Make sure you're going to Meetup Events and meeting new people face to face to talk to them about the idea! If you're shy, then you MUST come out of your comfort zone. Just find out where your target customers are hanging out and what Meetup Events are they apart of and go there to ask for feedback on your idea. If they like it then have them sign up. Build up the hype! If they sign up, these are going to be the people that your in communication with as your building out your platform, leave an awesome impression so they come back when your platform/service is ready.4) After you have some signups, I would interview them and talk to them about the idea. See what they like about it and why they want to use it. Make sure you also ask them about their feedback about various price points that you have in mind. Interviewing is key because you'll get the feedback you need to build it out. Once you talk to potential users you can fine tune your elevator pitch and really be able to figure out the actual problems that your customers care about. All of these things can help you gauge user interest for what you're doing and I've seen some pretty successful entrepreneurs implement these strategies. You should also visit http://Leanstartupmachine.com they host awesome weekend workshops to help you validate your business idea.I'd love to hear about all the new ideas that are on this question. Feel free to message me! You can always check me out at LawTrades.

Are pest control treatments safe for people and pets?
If pest control is meant by application of chemical pesticides, then the answer is: it is never safe. By nature pesticides are biocides and they are designed to kill life.Companies claim some pesticides to be the safe one. But there is nothing without any adverse effect on environment or human health. The degree of adversity may however vary.Few pesticides are toxic to pollinators, parasitoids and other useful insects. Others may be toxic to pets, wildelife and fishes. Also they cause varied human health problems like allergies, nerve toxicity, nephrologic and digestive disorders etc.Often secondary problems like pest resurgence, outbreaks, minor pests assuming major pest status, development of resistance etc are encountered after a sustained use of pesticides.Pesticides are therefore to be used only as last resort like as of a triumph card.

What do you think of this NBC article which calls for the regulation of hate speech?
What do you think of this NBC article which calls for the regulation of hate speech?Opinion | Is the First Amendment too broad? The case for regulating hate speechIt’s idiotic rhetoric. The very first line of the article is “Must we defend Nazis?”Followed immediately by an incredibly disingenuous “For many free speech advocates, the answer is not just ‘yes,’ but ‘hell, yes.’”There is just so much stupid in this article, I’m going to focus on the highlights. They mischaracterize the argument for Free Speech. They put their words in our mouths so that they can argue. “It's precisely because they are so loathed that Nazis must be vigorously defended, the argument goes.” No. We’re not arguing to defend the loathsome, we’re arguing that what is loathsome to one may not be loathsome to all. It is those who are in power who get to determine what constitutes “hate speech”, so before you go banning words that upset you, consider what will happen when the other party is in power and can use those laws you wrote against you. Free speech is valuable precisely because it protects unpopular speech, be that the vitriol of Neo-Nazis or the radical words of Martin Luther King Jr.Then we get this gem. “The best way to preserve lizards is not to preserve hawks” The argument is nonsensical. It is a false analogy, entirely unrelated to the matter at hand, and being deliberately used to dismiss valid arguments. Then, they try to “prove” that hate speech causes real harm. “For example, a John Hopkins study published in 2013 concluded that being exposed to racism can lead to high blood pressure and stress among African Americans.” Well gee, reading this garbage certainly spikes my blood pressure. This article should be banned as hate speech, because it harmed me. Jon Davis just wrote an excellent answer on to this question where he address the difference between harm, as I would use the term, and “harm” as idiot ideologues misuse the term.“Probably the most popular counterargument to regulating speech is the slipper slope argument.” I’m going to take puerile pleasure in pointing out the spelling mistake here. However, it turns out we’re right. Just look at the case of Lindsey Shepard. of Wilfrid Laurier University. She was accused of violating Hate Speech laws in Canada for showing a video to her students by one Jordan Peterson, without first telling them what to think of the video. The slippery slope isn’t hypothetical, it’s happening right now.As I said in Murphy Barrett's answer to Why do conservatives feel the need for a right to hate speech? Can they not keep their feelings to themselves? It’s not the right to hate speech we care about. It’s the right to free speech, of which hate speech is an unfortunate side effect.Free speech is vital to liberty and a free society.Free speech that only protects non-offensive words is about as useful as a solar powered flashlight. When you need it, it doesn’t work.Consider, what is hate speech? Who decides? You? Us? Them? People who prattle on about hate speech seem to always forget that they won’t always be the ones in power. It’s great, when your side gets to decide what is “hateful” based on your values, your limits, and your taboos. But what happens when the other party is in power? What happens when hate speech is based on their values, their limits, and their taboos? Before conceding to the State any power or authority, you must consider first what happens if the other party would use that same power against you. What do you plan to do when hate speech is illegal, but is defined as advocating for the murder of the unborn (abortion), denying the Lord God Almighty (atheism), and sedition (criticizing the US in any way)?Do you still want to ban hate speech? What you call hate speech, as part of free speech, has to be protected. There is no way to write a law that bans “hate speech” and protects “good speech”, apart from personal opinion, and that is no way to write laws. The law must be consistent, and treat people equally, else it is a tyrannical law subject to the whims of the rulers.Neonazis, disgusting swine that they are, must be allowed to march in Skokie so that great men like Martin Luther King Jr. can March on Washington.Look, you don’t have to like what assholes say. You don’t have to give them a soapbox. But you cannot take their own soapbox from them, beat them, fine them, jail them, just for saying things you don’t like. You ignore them, or you prove them wrong.“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”-1st Amendment, US Constitution

Why hasn't YouTube banned PewDiePie for his racist content against Indians?
PewDiePie has upwards of 3600 videos.Over the years, he has had his fair share of controversies - like when he used the n-word in a live stream, or when he called a female gamer a “thot”(another word for a whore), or when he paid a couple of folks to hold up a 'Death to all Jews' sign, or when he made a video titled: It's Raping Time. All of the above are deplorable acts and someone with as much internet influence as PewDiePie must be extra cautious in this regard. But this is all too small for Youtube to ban him. Sometimes his videos are demonetized and some are taken down. Here’s a playlist of all of his videos (180+) that have been deleted over the years (either by him or by Youtube).PewDiePie made about $15mn this year. That means Youtube makes another $15–18 million from his videos (assuming a 45–55 or 50–50 ad revenue split). Though that is still a drop in the ocean compared to $4bn estimated total revenue for Youtube last year (~0.4%), it is still quite a lot of money. However, PDP has had his share of rebuke. On Youtube Red, despite having one of the most popular series, the second season of Scare PewDiePie was canceled post the anti-semitic video. The cancellation also came with an additional removal from the “preferred” program that would have generated more revenue. In a statement early Tuesday, a YouTube spokesperson said, “We’ve decided to cancel the release of ‘Scare PewDiePie’ season 2 and we’re removing the PewDiePie channel from Google Preferred.” Google Preferred is the internet giant’s advertising program for selling popular “brand-safe content” on YouTube.YouTube Cancels PewDiePie Show, Pulls Channel From Ad Program After His ‘Death to All Jews’ StuntHowever, he still hasn’t committed a serious violation of Youtube’s Policies. Some of his videos might be distasteful, with a hint of subtle “isms”, but he always follows it up with an appeal to his fan-base to not abuse others, or doxx them. He makes original videos so the copyright infringement clause is not valid. He steers away from nudity or violence in his videos. He just occasionally toes the line and gets a slap on the wrist from Youtube. In fact, Youtube was so worried when he deleted his channel in 2016 that they got in touch with him.But PewDiePie has now informed fans that YouTube has replied to his video and are looking into it. “YouTube has responded and are digging into the issues,” he wrote on Twitter on Monday. As of now, he is “too big to fail”.After all, a total shit like Logan Paul is still active on the site.

How do you stay safe while city biking? Are there particular traffic situations to avoid, common mistakes bicyclists make, or e
I commute three miles each way in San Francisco almost every day, and get around by bike on the weekends, and these are my suggestions:Get a bright/large blinking rear light. I've noticed that drivers will often provide you more space just for having a light, even in the middle of the day.If possible, follow the same route(s). You'll learn where the potholes and tricky intersections are so you can spend more time paying attention to the traffic and less time watching out for stationary hazards. Corollary: once you're familiar with a route, start looking farther ahead and planning where you want to be in 20 feet, 40 feet, etc.Follow road rules. Slow down/stop for stop signs, and stop for stoplights. Signal your turns. Watch for and yield to pedestrians. Move into the lane and take up a spot while waiting for lights or on narrow streets. All of these things make your more visible and predictable to other road users. The effort of getting back up to speed is good exercise, and you won't be encouraging other road users to flout the rules (by say, driving in the bike lane.)Watch out for large vehicles; yield to buses, garbage trucks, etc., because they won't see you and will shove you out of your lane. Try to figure out if a bus at a bus stop is about to pull out or if it's safe to pass. My only accident in three years of biking in SF was when a bus pulled out of a stop and forced me into the rail tracks on Market St.Watch out for dooring. Indicators are: cars with lights on/running in a parking spot, or people visible in the driver's seat in parking spaces. Extra tricky: passengers exiting while traffic is paused, e.g. at a stop sign or stop light -- yet another reason to slow/stop for intersections.Gimmes: wear a helmet, don't wear headphones, keep your head up so you can see what's coming, try not to bike during rush hour, especially in the evening.Don't let these warnings deter you from city biking! As I mentioned, I've only been in one accident in three years of car-free travel in San Francisco, and I get a lot of enjoyment out of it.Several people have mentioned assuming that drivers are out to get you, which illustrates a valid approach to both biking and driving: Assume that the drivers are out to get you, that your tire is going to explode when you hit that next pothole, that your brakes won't work when you get to the light, etc.Maybe assume isn't the right word, but you should be thinking about these possibilities a little bit while you're biking (or driving, for that matter). I've lost both brake and shifter cables (and gotten plenty of sudden flats) while biking, but never been in an accident because of these things. You can brake by sticking your foot on the tire (practice this, perhaps). Don't panic if you stop being able to shift. If you get a flat, just brake with the other tire and keep steering. If it looks like a car could pull into you, reduce the chances (by slowing or avoiding) or look for escape routes should it happen... and so on.

Is it okay for parents to secretly snoop through their teenagers’ stuff?
I would like to answer this with a couple of real life stories.Story 1:Mother brings up daughter on a “best friend” mode, where each day, everyday she tells her daughter that “hiding or lying to mom isn't ok”!Daughter passes through her teens with nothing major happening in her life - and she ensures she tells her “best friend” everything.A couple of times the “everything” was super shocking - specially when she shared the literal meanings of Hindi cuss words (taught to her by her seniors at college)…The “best friend” mom didn't throw a fit… at least not in front of her daughter…The daughter also had a “why do they call my friend gay conversation” with her mom - without her Indian and rather sheltered mom, not throwing a fit…The last one must have taken a lot of courage!Today the daughter, here has a daughter of her own, and she is trying to do “best friend” mom version 2.(My Story with my mom)Story 2:Mother has 2 kids. The younger one is a favourite…The elder one and the whole world knows that! The elder one starts acting out and then becomes depressed and sullen. When confronted by his hostel warden, it is discovered that he had started drinking. The mother got a shock! When the elder one threw at his mom that it was her fault…She in her guilt of favouring the younger one - started overlooking each major upset the elder one caused! When friends and family warned her that he had taken to drugs…She vehemently refused… and allowed the sham of a life to go on!5 years into this crap - the elder one collapsed and landed up in hospital…Mom was distraught… there was now proof of overdose.Since then the elder one has been out of therapy and the younger one is now neglected as an adult…(My classmate was the younger of these siblings)Story 3:Parents have a very happy life! Then come the kids - they decide to be over vigilant! They want the best for the kids… the regular snooping…Forcing all friends to be scanned and tested! All parties banned … and no late nights or night outs!Super strict!A few years back the younger of the kids committed suicide as part of a pact with his online friends.(Story of a friend's nephew)…….Each of these stories has a different meaning and a different understanding of parenting…It's ups and downs…NO kinds of parenting is perfect!……..Coming back to the original question - snooping around your kids stuff without any reasons is not ok…But if you child has been behaving in a secretive manner, or is sullen, depressed or acting out or is out of the normal… then YES you need to become the tyrant snooper parent!

How have you been treated by the police in America?
It was almost 1am during the summer of 2013, I was coming home from a closing shift at the bar I worked at and was just turning on to my street in Koreatown, Los Angeles. The historic hotel on the corner of Wilshire and Berendo was set up with a film crew out front and a couple of police cars and a crowd of pedestrians onlooking. If you’ve ever visited or lived in downtown Los Angeles and the surrounding areas, you know that street closures due to filming is very common. For locals, it’s very frustrating to say the least. But we move along and try to find parking or pass through without much thought. I turned on to my street before realizing that there was a film set and I had to commit to the turn because there were other cars behind me. I slowly get halfway through the block when I see a police car parked in the middle of the street and a cop sitting halfway in the driver seat with his door open and his feet planted on the ground. I waited a moment for him to realize that he was blocking the road and I couldn’t turn around because of the cars behind me and the fact that it was a narrow street. He peers out of his seat and then goes back to his business.Mind you, the sidewalks were full of people and the set lights were bright enough to illuminate the entire street. The cars behind me start to honk since they couldn’t see what was going on in front of me. I rolled down my window and beckoned to the police officer to please close his door so we could squeeze past. I don’t know if he ignored me or didn’t hear me, but the honking behind me got louder. Now, this is Los Angeles, Koreatown, to be exact. The Rodney King riots were just twenty years prior and believe me when I say that police tensions are still VERY MUCH a problem in this part of LA. I’m much smarter than to get out of my car and approach a police officer at night at 1am while he’s in his car. So I flash my high beams at him quickly to get his attention. It worked. The officer immediately got out of his car, put a hand on his gun holster as he furiously walked over to my car. He started cursing and screaming at me, “who the FUCK do you think you are? You don’t think I fucking see you?”, I was taken aback, “I’m sorry sir, I didn’t think you heard me, I’m blocked in I can’t go any other way but forward and you didn’t hear me when I asked you to mov….” he interrupted, “Oh I fucking heard you, I just don’t give a shit”. Without missing a beat or asking me to step out of the car he signNowed into my window, over my lap, and tried to unbuckle my seat belt while trying to open the door with his other hand. He managed to get the door open, but I was yelling “What are you doing?” and kept my hands firmly gripped around the buckle of my seat belt.Enough people from the crowd heard what was happening and turned their attention to me. I could hear the man behind me who was honking his horn earlier yelling at the officer “hey man, leave her alone”. People from the crowd were exclaiming “that’s not right”. All I could do was stay planted in my seat and continue to ask “are you arresting me?” over and over again. I must have asked it 5 times. This all happened in a matter of probably 1 minute. I think that enough people were standing around and saw what was happening that the officer didn’t have much of a choice but to stop and yell one more obscenity at me before getting into his car and moving it out of the way. As I drove by I didn’t dare look at his face. I remember driving around the block once or twice so that he wouldn’t see that I lived in the apartment just half a block down the street. The following morning I went to the nearby precinct to file an official complaint. I was told that since I wasn’t physically harmed nor arrested that they couldn’t do much. I specifically remember the clerk and the female officer who were hearing my complaint and I specifically remember the female officer say “I hear what you’re saying, but trust me, lodging a complaint against an LA officer like this is not wise for you”.And that’s my opinion of police officers. There’s the bad ones that get away with corruption and disproportionate use of force and authority. And there’s the good cops, who aren’t able or willing to do anything about it. I live in Portland, OR now, and the cops haven’t changed much. Except for maybe they’re not such gangsters.I’m fortunate enough to appear white. I was fortunate enough to have a crowd of people on that street when just the night before at the end of my bar shift that street was quiet and dark. I shudder to think what would have happened otherwise.
