What's with the wide and fancy letters when Japanese internet users type in Roman letters?
Do you mean this kind of text?In the JIS character encoding (and now in Unicode, and in many more Asian encodings) there are “full-width” European characters that take up an entire square, like Chinese characters do.This convention basically doesn’t exist at all in the West — we have monospaced characters, as anyone who has used a typewriter (or even anyone who has used the Courier or Monaco fonts) knows. But even those are typically taller than they are wide. In Asia, the standard for Chinese characters is that they fit into perfect squares. So when you need a Western character sitting in a column or line of Chinese characters, it looks more natural if it too is square.(There are also non-square, “proportional” Asian fonts in which each character has a specific width. I’m assuming your screen isn’t using one with the following example.)Consider these three ways of writing “Today’s B Course is available until 12:00.”:今日のBコースは十二時までです。(This is with kanji numerals.)今日のBコースは12時までです。(This is with fullwidth Western numerals.)今日のBコースは12時までです。(This is with halfwidth Western numerals.)I’m typing this on a Mac with the Hiragino Gothic font, and for me the first two align perfectly, because the Western characters are the same width as the Japanese ones. But that third one, with its non-perfect-square B, 1, and 2, will not match well with lines of text above and below it.That’s a legitimate “normal” use of fullwidth Western characters.Now computer input methods make it a little too easy to get these fullwidth characters, I think. For example, in Microsoft’s Japanese input editor, if you hold Shift before typing any letter, the default behavior is to give you Roman letters rather than attempting to convert what you have typed into hiragana. But if you type select fullwidth characters, in the ensuing conversion screen, you might type Special Price but then hit the convert button and get the option to have Special Price instead. And you might just go with that because, not being familiar with Western typography, you don’t know that it’s more than a little weird to Westerners. Is the FizzBuzz task an effective way to interview engineers? Does this task accurately differentiate engineering candidates?
FizzBuzz is a stupid question that got way too popular. It's an interview question that turned into a meme, essentially. Before you ask this, or any question, you need to first understand what you're looking for. In this case, are you asking it as a sanity check (i.e., are you remotely competent?) or as an evaluative question (i.e., how good are you at ___?). I've done hundreds of programming interviews, lots of interview coaching, and lots of hiring consulting. This question is just not good.You might not need to sanity check.This question became popularized as a sanity check. But do you really need to sanity check?If I were hiring people to stock a room and they needed to lift 100 lbs, I'd test them with 100 lbs weights. I wouldn't give them 20 lbs weights for a "sanity check". That's a waste of both people's time. Maybe you can offer a little wiggle room on the bar, because people can be trained. But you don't necessarily need to set a low initial bar. It's okay if you can't distinguish between the bad and really bad people. You're going to reject them both eventually.It's not a good sanity check.The problem with FizzBuzz is that it looks like there's something "interesting" to the algorithm. After all, it can't just be a coincidence that 3 means Fizz, 5 means Buzz, and 3 and 5 mean the concatenation of Fizz and Buzz.A smart person who values a great solution will chase that "interesting" solution, which doesn't really exist (see the answer -- and the ridiculous number of comments: Gayle Laakmann McDowell's answer to Are there really programmers with computer science degrees who cannot pass the FizzBuzz test?). Here's one, off the top of my head:Given an integer, write a program to check if the digits are in sorted order.That's pretty straightforward with a tiny bit of thinking, right? Sanity check. There you go.It can't be more than a sanity check.Many people argue that FizzBuzz is more than just a sanity check. That it tells you something about the candidate's ability to write readable, optimal, or extensible code. That does matter -- I agree.But FizzBuzz isn't a good way to do this. The differences in optimality, extensibility, and readability are so minor that it depends a lot on your assumptions and your interpretation of the problem.Approach A:if i % 3 == 0 and i % 5 == 0: print "FizzBuzz" else if i % 3 == 0: print "Fizz" else if i % 5 == 0: print "Buzz" else: print i Approach B:s = "" if i % 3 == 0: s = "Fizz" if i % 5 == 0: s += "Buzz" if s == "": s = str(i) print s Personally, I find approach A to be both more readability and extensible. After all, if you change the requirement to "print Foo when i is divisible by 3 and 5", then it's easy to update the code. And, it is most clearly maps to the problem statement, in my opinion.Others though argue that approach B is better. If you added additional requirements (print Foo if it's divisibly by 7), it'd be easier to update this. Also, it shows a "3 maps to Fizz and 5 maps to Buzz" logic.I disagree on the readability and extensibility of approach B, but those people aren't wrong. They're just looking at the problem from a different but equally valid perspective. If you envision the problem as being a sequence of "divisibility by N -> print S" requirements, then approach B is maybe better. But if you envision it as possibly a coincidence that there's a relationship between the string for {3 and 5} and the string for each, then approach A is possibly better.How I interpret minor little wording things tells you nothing about my ability to write extensible, readable, optimal code. Connecting these things feels like an ink blot test to me. Tell me, what do you see? Do you see optimal code?Maybe you can learn something about me out of the discussion of different approaches. Fine. But you're probably not going to look at my approach with an open mind, and if you're really looking for optimality and readability and extensibility, ask a much more complex question.There are so many better questions.FizzBuzz is not the worst question ever. It's just not a good question. It doesn't serve well as a sanity check (you might actually reject your best people) and it doesn't serve well to look at more important factors.Want one that does both?Given a group of people with their birth years and death years, find the year with the highest population.It's a sanity check. If someone can't come up with any solution to this problem, that's a bad sign. You can reject the clear no's.But, it's more than a sanity check! You can also develop solutions which are more optimal. The code is a bit more interesting -- not super difficult, but considerably more interesting than a for loop with basic mod checks. Plus, this is a really overdone question. When candidates hear this, you'll be sending a powerful signal -- much more powerful than the signal from their performance -- that you couldn't come up with or find a more interesting question. You're just repeating this question because you heard somewhere that it's a good question.It's not.

What prank should I pull for my senior year of high school?
Fake your way into the record booksThis is the prank I played my senior year, and it was so good, we didn’t get caught until the last week of school.Every school has the wall. You know, the one with tons of trophy cases, athletic plaques, and pictures of championship-winning teams of the past.Sort of like the picture above, except instead of the art above the lockers, it is a framed photo of the 1989 sectional championship volleyball team with a bunch of your friends’ parents featured in their youth. Generic, simple, and common.This is our final product. I’m in the front, far left. Check the fake name “Chuck O’Buketts”, who is my current roommate. We aged the photo to match those surrounding it.Usually, each picture has a certain format and plain frame. In my case, we had the team year, title, and description listed above the photo, with the names listed below in regular size 14 Times New Roman font. The entire picture was framed in a generic black wooden frame. It was pretty easy to copy the format, so I’m sure many schools will have similar setups.Plan out where you are posting your photo; find an empty spot on the wall and make note of the surrounding photos as well. Which years are the team championships? Which sports are the teams known for? How grainy is the photo in each picture? These observations are key to making your fake championship team seem plausible.I suggest picking a low-key, low-exposure, small team sport for your fake team to play. Try to avoid popular sports or activities your school is known for. This usually leaves sports like cross country (what we selected), tennis, golf, and bowling, to name a few. You could pick something more off-the-wall, but remember that people will see the picture, so it needs to be plausible. No one will believe that your school had a 1997 conference champion cornhole team. Also, picking a small team sport makes the whole process easier. The fewer people you need for the picture, the simpler it is to get a group together and do the prank.Taking the photo is easy. Pick a simple background at your school and try to find matching uniforms. We did simple white running jerseys and were able to photoshop a bit of detail to make us look more uniform overall. Take the photo and modify it to fit the level of quality of the pictures in the area where you will post yours. Once that is done, come up with a few fake names, find a matching frame, and hang the photo without getting caught. I recommend using sticky strips instead of nails; I would hate to see you catch a vandalism charge for punching holes through the wall. Plus, it is easier to take down at the end of the year.Our photo was up from the beginning of the school year until the last week before graduation. The athletic director ended up seeing the fake photo when hanging a new picture in the hallway after our softball team won semi-state. He didn’t make a big deal about it, and we even had a chance to laugh when I met him to pick it up. It was right after graduation; I was still in my cap and gown. He giggled when he handed it to me, impressed:“That’s the best, most harmless senior prank I’ve ever seen… I wish I could’ve left it up there, but then I wouldn’t be doing my job. Plus, our cross country teams have never won conference. Ever.”Senior pranks don’t have to be rude, reckless, or destructive to be fun. In fact, you may leave a better legacy if your senior prank manages to make the administration smile instead of making them call the cops.

How do I remember ASL signs?
You can try to search for the iconic ("picture") roots of the sign, but there are a lot of signs which do not have any basis in iconicity and you will be wasting your time. Deaf people tend to see signs as just that -- lexical (vocabulary) items and learn them on that basis without considering their roots. You could try to make up an iconic root for it as a mnemonic device, but please do not try to tell other people that that is why we sign _____. There's nothing worse than erroneous information getting shared and passed around and taken for gospel. You might want to check into one of the ASL writing systems that are now being developed as a way of recording what you're learning and helping you to remember the signs. But my suggestion -- just accept that the sign is what the sign is, practice it, refer back to it, hang out with ASL signers, and you will soon find that you're remembering the signs without having to think about it.

What are the biggest hassles and problems that screen printers face when dealing with customers?
Wow where do I start?Art - They think a snippet off their computer logo is good enough. It’s not. Customers rarely keep the original that may have been at the correct resolution of 200–300 DPI. Instead they give you business cards, screen shots, or a jpeg that is at 72 dpi and cannot be used. When you explain the art charges they will insist they provided art. I charge 2x what I would charge for a simple design to recreate lousy art, much harder than starting over. If the art has tonal values and is at 72dpi, don’t touch it. You’ll have a real hard time matching other items like brochures that have already been reproduced.Screen Charges - Do not invoice them for screens. They will want to take them with them when things go south and if they have an invoice they can do it. Rather list the charge as a Screen Prep fee, plate charge, something untangible that is a service not a physical item.Approval. Never print anything with a verbal approval. Make them sign off on an actual sample, or print or the art. If the art is simple the sign off on the art is fine. If it is a 12 color sim process masterpiece for say a band, company, school, etc. They have to sign off on a printed sample. This can be expensive in labor for you, so build it in the unit price to sample in the sample dept. If you don’t have one have them do a press check sign off with a specific time and a 20 minute grace period to arrive. If they are a regular customer you can waive the next charge. If it is a newby customer who really has no idea what they really want charge 250 per hour wait time to get them there on time for the press check. If they want a revison on the print, see below. Never accept a verbal approval. Take a photo, have them send back and email saying they approve the print. For the 12 color sim process, they must see the print. I follow a 3 step art journey. Show 3 thumbnail sketches, pick one. Take to final art, sign off via email. Take to print, sign off again on print. Save these. If you ever have a real nasty customer, or one who sues to make money off of you, these sign offs are golden in court. We printed 10k company shirts for an event. Our print location tolerance as specified in the write up order was 1/4 inch. He took a tape to each one and wanted full price returned when it was off by this much. So he returned 5000+ of them. He lost. big time due to sign offs on what the order write up was, the digital art, and the final print. He also claimed we scorched the shirts. We retained an original unprinted shirt in his art folder, same cream white as what he provided.Revisions - On your order form have some simple wording that they sign off/initial on that says that any revisions are billed at 50 dollar/hr art fees, the charges for new film, and screens and a set up charge, )(first was is included in the price, the second is not. If its a 20,000 piece order smile and revise for free the first time, otherwise you charge for revisions. Make them aware that changing one screen may require revising others.Proof read your Art. Which way is Ogden Utah spelt? or is it Odgen Utah. My spell checker caught it, my artist didn’t, 300 satin AYSO jackets all were misprinted.Deposits - Non=refundable. Especially once the shirts are bought. New clients, all prepay. Teams-all prepay unless you know them and trust them. Large orders over 200 pcs, 2/3 deposit. If the customer supplies the shirt, you need to approve the brand and test for bleeding. Print a small square on the inside hem, run it through the oven 2–3 times. Wait a few days to see if it bleeds with the color of the fabric beneath. Refuse the order if it bleeds. It may not bleed today, but in 2–3 months it surely will. Personally I have two price lists on print. My shirts, and then one with 1.5–2x the print cost on my shirts if they supply. Customer supplied stuff is dangerous, it always comes back unless it is a known brand. Huge clients, like a Walmart or Disney. You need to be in the game, you better have deep pockets and grant credit sometimes in the millions of dollars and be happy to be paid in 60–90 days.Counts: Nothing comes in our out of your shop without every piece being counted. Known customers, just let em know. New ones, count out every piece, look for flaws, mis matched dye lots. Never trust the count they give you. When they pick up, same story. Especially for teams. Go ahead ship that 14 member soccer order. The coach will claim they are missing one and Johnny didn’t get his. So for teamwear, individually bag them and put an avery 5160 on the bag with the name and size. Lay them out on a table, photograph them in a group. Count each one out for a team when they pick up. Large orders: Get a digital scale to weigh the boxes. 72 xl weighs at 32.287 pounds. So when they say they are missing 12 XL or even 1 XL you can show a manifest with box 1 =32.287 lbs on a digital scale. I walk new customers around the packing area and boast how we weigh each box so we know it is correct. Easier before than after to explain how you know they are lying. Big Box stores - have your game on. Besides the manifest with each individual box numbered and weighed, take photos of the first print, the 72nd, the 144th and so on to dispute any quality issues. Photograph your boxes so you can prove labeling was placed correctly. Bar codes have to be read by a scanner on a converyor, they have specific locations for these box ‘license plates’ to check in with automatic conveyor systems. And they charge dearly if it isn’t right, have proof. Chargebacks for big stores often requires a dedicated person to document and argue about chargebacks.Deadlines - If its shorter than your quoted date upcharge. If it’s a Friday and they need them tomorrow, 2x print costs. Overtime costs you, it shoud cost them. Had a run for the cure account show up with a 6000 pc order Friday afternoon. We printed all night, and had to deliver all over Socal, no amount of money can pay you for the hell this is, especially since presses tend to malfunction, electricity can go out, you run out of white ink at midnight, these jobs aren’t worth it, unless you are a brave soul who enjoys the stress.Payment - No personal checks, Cash on newbies, unless you have verified their company or organization. NO Credit. Unless you are dealing with a million dollar company and demands it. Deposit, cash on delivery, or have them sign up an account and then verify their credit just like a landlord would do. Oh and always get a person with the authority to do any contractual obligations as the person who signs off. Do not let a delivery driver sign off, either the financially responsible person, or an agent that you verify has the authority to sign off on anything above.Above all remember this phrase, once burnt twice shy. Your new customer may be totally legit, but once burnt by some other company and you will implement rules to prevent this. In some cases however if a large merchandiser walks through the door and pays well has lots of easy steady work, you will bend the rules and take some hits once in awhile to get good paying steady business. Why is the word "ambulance" spelled backwards on the front of ambulances?
Wow! So many answers and almost all of them wrong!This is not due to “laws of reflection in physics”. Mirrors do not reverse left and right. Think about it: how would a mirror distinguish left and right from up and down, which is not reversed? A mirror has no built-in sense of gravity. Mirrors still work in space! In fact, a mirror only reverses “in and out”, i.e. around the plane of the mirror, which is the only preferred plane a mirror can have. Also consider: you see the initial letter A of “ambulance” on your left in the mirror and that’s where the letter A behind you actually is when you are looking straight ahead, so again left and right are not reversed. You can read more about this here.So what about the ambulance? What you are seeing is indeed an “in out” inversion. Imagine the ambulance was made of glass. What does the ambulance driver see? He sees the lettering on the front the right way round. What’s more, if he was able to see the reflection of the word Ambulance in your rear view mirror, it would still be right way round.Imagine then that the ambulance overtakes you. Now you see the lettering the right way round too… BUT NOTHING FLIPPED FROM LEFT TO RIGHT AS YOU WERE OVERTAKEN. The lettering was always the right way round.But, you may object, if you turn your head to look at the writing on an ambulance behind you, it looks wrong way round. Yes, but that wasn’t the mirror doing a reversal — that was you turning your head. The mirror just allows you to see it without turning your head.
